Application Trends to Watch in 2021, and a Look Back at 2020

Can the lessons of 2020 help us forge a better 2021? [Show summary] For Admissions Straight Talk’s 400th episode, Linda Abraham reflects on a turbulent year and identifies the most important trends in higher ed admissions to watch in 2021. Applying to graduate school: A journey of self-improvement [Show notes] We’ve reached Episode 400! I feel it's a milestone, and I've decided to do a little bit of a different kind of a show. I'm going to discuss two important developments of 2020 and their impact on applicants, their implications for you as you apply, and how you should deal with them.  I also want to speak at the very end on a more personal and, hopefully, thoughtful perspective, a little bit higher level, more strategically, and share some thoughts as we are starting to see the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel. This is a brand new year. The other perspective that I'm going to share will reflect a little of what I've learned from Rabbi Lord Dr. Jonathan Sacks, a favorite writer, thinker, and teacher of mine, who sadly passed away in November. His writings have relevance to many people and many situations, but specifically to grad school applicants, and I'm dedicating this podcast in his memory. The rising number of graduate program applicants [2:16] The first development that folks need to be aware of, and I'm sure you are aware of, is the surge. And no, I don't mean the surge in COVID cases that we are tragically experiencing. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the surge in applicants to graduate programs across the board that is occurring this fall and winter. What do I mean by that? Let's give some examples. In December, NPR reported that 18% more applicants applied via AAMC to medical school than did a year earlier. Some school-specific numbers: Stanford, which also went test-optional, reported a 50% increase in applications. Boston University reported a 27% increase in applications. And when I spoke with Paul White of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in October, for Admissions Straight Talk's 392nd episode which you can find at accepted.com/392, he reported at that point an increase of 25% in applications to Johns Hopkins. Business schools are also experiencing a surge in applications. They were experiencing a decline in applications that seemed to end for most schools with round two of last year and the recession’s onset in March of 2020. They have also seen a surge in applications this cycle. The stats for last year revealed 67% of MBA programs reporting increased applications per GMAC. The stats for this year aren't out yet, but news reports, whether from The Wall Street Journal, Poets&Quants, or my conversations with admissions directors, all indicate increased application volume. Law school applications have also soared. Through December 15th, LSAC reports a 38% increase in applicants (not applications, but applicants) year over year, a whopping 57.4% increase in applications year over year, and an almost 62% increase in applications over two years ago. Twelve out of 200 law schools reported a 100% increase in applications, and 106 out of 200 law schools reported an increase of between 50 and 99%, which means that well over half of law schools are reporting more than a 50% increase in applications. LSAC, conservatively, warns that it's too early in the cycle to draw conclusions, since at this time last year, 34% of applications had been counted. However, I am concluding that with roughly a third of applications in, or presumed to be in at this point in time, the file numbers may not be this eye-popping, but there will be a marked increase in applications to the nation's law schools.  Various graduate specialties are also up: for example, Master's in Public Health. ABC News, citing data from the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health, which has over 100 MPH programs participating in its Common Application service,

Through December, and Christmas, we put up the Christmas decorations, buy a tree, or get out the artificial tree from the attic or shed, and decorate that too. We do our Christmas shopping for food treats, and items to give as gifts to people. Much of this tradition that we do every December seems to be of habits and routine, We feel an obligation to do all of this, despite not being able to afford it and maxing out our credit to make all of this 'fun' happen. So, during this Sunday Sessions we visit a few nature based and human fellowship traditions, of December, that we may have forgotten, never heard of, or we celebrate today in ways that seem to be very disconnected from their origins. Through this Sunday Session I will include trees for celebration, tree blessings such as fruit tree 'wassailing', songs from ancient times that we have adapted today, and folk drama fun and healing rituals that have become mumming, guising, straw boys and wren boys these days. Enjoy the mysteries of ancient December Traditions and how you may perform them today. In return, perhaps enjoy more meaning and blessings than from the familiar consumer ways. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/Carrowcrory/message

Craft Brew News 1/10/20(Courtesy of Brewbound www.brewbound.com)Heineken USA Giving Away 31-Packs of Non-Alc Beer for ‘Dry January’Heineken USA (HUSA) is giving away 1,000 31-packs of its non-alcoholic beer, Heineken 0.0, as part of a campaign to win beer-drinking occasions during “Dry January.”Dry January is a month of no consumption of alcohol, which one in five Americans told YouGov they would be observing to start 2020.In an effort to capture those presumably lost drinking occasions, HUSA launched a promotion December 27 to give away its “January Dry Pack” — which includes 31 cans of Heineken 0.0. The packs won’t be available at retailers. In an effort to boost the non-alcoholic beer brand again in 2020, HUSA has committed another $50 million to the brand and plans to give away 10 million samples throughout the year.Through December 1, HUSA was the fifth largest beer company in the U.S., with off-premise dollar sales of $1.3 billion (down 2.4% year-over-year), according to market research firm IRI.New York Lawmaker Proposes Doubling State Beer TaxManhattan assemblyman Harvey Epstein introduced a bill Monday that would more than double New York’s excise tax on beer from $0.14 per gallon to $0.30 per gallon in an effort to help fund State University of New York and the City University of New York, according to the Times-Herald Record.According to Epstein’s estimates, the increased tax could generate about $96 million annually and puts the excise tax rate in line with the state’s wine excise tax. In the bill’s legislative memo, Epstein noted that the state’s beer excise tax is the 12th lowest in the nation.Nevertheless, the bill is likely to struggle for support given Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s vocal support for the state’s craft beverage makers. As proof of Cuomo’s backing of the state’s alcohol industry, the governor is expected to push for the Legislature to pass legislation to allow alcohol sales in movie theaters during his State of the State address.Backlash Beer Company Exits Boston Area TaproomBoston’s Backlash Beer Company has exited its taproom in the Roxbury neighborhood over the holidays, according to an Instagram post.In the Instagram post announcing the taproom closure, the company said it would continue contract brewing the brand. The company said “You’ll still be able to find our beer on the shelves of your local beer shop and on draft in Massachusetts, Maine, and beyond.”Backlash’s landlord had been advertising the space for rent since midsummer as a ”fully built out brewer/tap room space in Boston.” Backlash, which started producing beer under contract in 2011, opened its $1.5 million brewery in September 2018, behind schedule and $250,000 over its original budget, according to reports.Bill Would Allow Cold Beer Sales at Indiana Grocery, Convenience StoresA bill to allow grocery and convenience stores to sell refrigerated beer has already been filed in Indiana’s state Senate, according to WIBC 93.1 FM. Currently, the state only allows liquor stores and restaurants with to-go sales privileges to sell cold beer.Indiana’s legislative session starts on January 6.Although the bill has already been introduced, hope for its passage is dim. Indiana Grocery and Convenience Store Association president Joe Lackey told WIBC that some lawmakers will have to retire before it garners enough support to pass.Lackey told the outlet “At a time when grocery stores are going out of business all over the state, people are complaining about food deserts, but yet, cold beer would be one of the things that would allow some of those stores to stay open”.Although legislation legalizing Sunday sales of alcohol in the state’s grocery, liquor, drug and convenience stores was passed in 2018, an effort to change the cold beer prohibition failed.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? Welcome to Episode 8 – How John Freeman Writes We are now just a week and a half away from the beginning of not just a new year, but a new decade. That means goal planning. For some of you, maybe you’ve set goals and haven’t been able to achieve them. Maybe you’ve dropped your goals, or not felt as if you had the right tools to accomplish them. If that is you, I’ve designed an entire online course just for writers on how to set and achieve writing goals. It is the first training I’ve published because, to me, setting and achieving your writing is so central to the writing journey. If you want to blast into 2020 and into the next decade if you want to take your writing practice to the next level, consider taking the course. Through December, the course is only $39. Use the code “podcast” at checkout to get that price through December. I am so excited for this interview with John. As you can see, John has such a unique vantage point of the writing world, from writing his own non-fiction and poetry, as the executive editor of Lit Hub, as a professor at NYU, and so much more. John shares so much wisdom about his own writing process and about the writing life. As I produced this interview, I couldn’t help but smile at John’s burning passion for books and writing. Thank you to John for hosting me in his apartment in Chelsea, which is a tribute to books. Bookshelves line all of the walls and trust me when I say they are completely packed. This will be the last author interview of 2019. I’m taking a week off to celebrate the holidays with my family, but we’ll be back with an incredible line up in 2020. And here is the interview with John Freeman. Support the show (http://www.howwriterswrite.com)

Chris Sacca, activist investor, recently argued that Black Twitter IS Twitter. For example, African American usage of the service often dominates user metrics in the United States, despite their minority demographic numbers as computer users. This talk by André Brock unpacks Black Twitter use from two perspectives: analysis of the interface and associated practice alongside discourse analysis of Twitter’s utility and audience. Using examples of Black Twitter practice, Brock offers that Twitter’s feature set and ubiquity map closely onto Black discursive identity. Thus, Twitter’s outsized function as mechanism for cultural critique and political activism can be understood as the awakening of Black digital practice and an abridging of a digital divide. André Brock is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan. Brock is one of the preeminent scholars of Black cyberculture. His work bridges Science and Technology Studies and Critical Discourse Analysis, showing how the communicative affordances of online media align with those of Black communication practices. Through December 2016, he is a Visiting Researcher with the Social Media Collective at Microsoft Research New England.
