In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the current state of the MBA admissions season. We are continuing to see a few MBA programs release their final decisions, and candidates reporting their admissions from waitlists. We do still anticipate some more waitlist movement in the weeks ahead. Graham noted that Clear Admit is planning its MBA Essay Workshop events series that is scheduled for July 21 and 22, and July 28 and 29. These events will bring together the majority of the top MBA programs to discuss both their written essay prompts as well as their video essays. Clear Admit also featured a story of two students at Johns Hopkins / Carey, who created a startup at the intersection of health care and AI. Finally, Graham highlighted the return of the Weekly Refresh series which updates admissions candidates on the latest admissions deadlines and essay topics from all the top MBA programs. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry. This week's first MBA admissions candidate already has an MBA from India. They are an engineering undergraduate who has worked in the insurance industry. This week's second MBA applicant is from Bangladesh and works in corporate banking. They have a 655 GMAT score. This week's final MBA candidate is deciding between Booth and Fuqua. CannCon and Ashe in America close out Chapter 3 of G. Edward Griffin's The Creature from Jekyll Island and the hits keep coming. Continental Illinois triggers the world's first electronic bank run, and the FDIC quietly covers 96% of uninsured deposits while small banks down the street get shut down the same week. The chapter then jumps to 2008: Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, TARP, the auto bailouts, and the Merrill Lynch forced merger. Henry Paulson engineers the demolition of his Goldman Sachs rivals while protecting his alma mater. Banks announce they "repaid" loans using other government money, and the whole thing gets called a success. By the end, the government quietly owns 56% of GMAC and 80% of AIG, but nobody calls it nationalization. CannCon and Ashe also compare the third and fifth editions of the book, finding key sections merged and updated. Griffin's second reason to abolish the Fed lands hard: it is not a protector of the public. It is a cartel operating against it.

A failure is just the first step." - Peter Merel   Peter Merel became a Scrum Master by stealth — long before the title existed. Credited in Kent Beck's first XP book and present at the first agile conference, Peter was practicing lightweight processes at Hewlett Packard in the late 1990s. When he took a role at GMAC, the residential finance arm of General Motors, he brought XP practices with him and found early success. After six months of strong results, the project manager, Mike Alakom, sat Peter down and asked the most dangerous management question: "What do I do?" Peter gave what he now calls the stupidest answer possible — "You don't really have a role in this process." The next day, Mike called an all-hands meeting and calmly maneuvered Peter into crediting the entire way of working as Mike's idea. Peter stayed on for another six months, but at arm's length. In hindsight, Peter recognizes Mike did exactly what he should have done. The second failure came at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, where Peter was brought in to coach agile but was actually being set up to fail — a ripcord the organization could pull when it wasn't ready for change. The delivery manager, Des Webster, told Peter directly: "You were set up to fail." Peter walked away, thinking he'd never return. But six years later, every person he had coached had moved up in the organization, and Peter came back as principal coach for 50,000 people. The CIO declared Agile one of the bank's five pillars. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the current state of the MBA admissions season. Last week was the final week of decision releases for Round 1, for the top MBA programs. This now corresponds with an uptick in activity of MBA Decision Wire, as many candidates begin to weigh their MBA options. Graham noted two admissions tips recently published on Clear Admit. The first focuses on GMAC's Common Letter of Recommendation, which has been adopted by many of the top MBA programs. The second admissions tip explores the recent phenomenon of some MBA programs offering test waivers. Graham highlighted an Adcom Q&A featuring Yale SOM's Bruce DelMonico. This led to a discussion on the value of the institutional brand for Yale's MBA program. Graham then noted a Real Humans piece spotlighting students from Dartmouth / Tuck. We then discussed the recently published employment reports from Tuck and MIT / Sloan.
