In this episode, Cliff Crosland, CEO & co-founder of Scanner.dev, shares his candid journey of trying (and initially failing) to build an in-house security data lake to replace an expensive traditional SIEM.Cliff explains the economic breaking point where scaling a SIEM became "more expensive than the entire budget for the engineering team". He details the technical challenges of moving terabytes of logs to S3 and the painful realization that querying them with Amazon Athena was slow and costly for security use cases .This episode is a deep dive into the evolution of logging architecture, from SQL-based legacy tools to the modern "messy" data lake that embraces full-text search on unstructured data. We discuss the "data engineering lift" required to build your own, the promise (and limitations) of Amazon Security Lake, and how AI agents are starting to automate detection engineering and schema management.Guest Socials - Cliff's Linkedin Podcast Twitter - @CloudSecPod If you want to watch videos of this LIVE STREAMED episode and past episodes - Check out our other Cloud Security Social Channels:-Cloud Security Podcast- Youtube- Cloud Security Newsletter If you are interested in AI Cybersecurity, you can check out our sister podcast - AI Security PodcastQuestions asked:(00:00) Introduction(02:25) Who is Cliff Crosford?(03:00) Why Teams Are Switching from SIEMs to Data Lakes(06:00) The "Black Hole" of S3 Logs: Cliff's First Failed Data Lake(07:30) The Engineering Lift: Do You Need a Data Engineer to Build a Lake?(11:00) Why Amazon Athena Failed for Security Investigations(14:20) The Danger of Dropping Logs to Save Costs(17:00) Misconceptions About Building Your Own Data Lake(19:00) The Evolution of Logging: From SQL to Full-Text Search(21:30) Is Amazon Security Lake the Answer? Have you ever pondered who invented the beloved pumpkin pie? Contrary to what one might think, this iconic dessert wasn't the creation of a single individual. Instead, its rich history spans continents and centuries, weaving together the culinary traditions of Native Americans and European settlers. Let's delve into the fascinating tale of how pumpkin pie became a staple on our holiday tables. No food is as closely associated with autumn in the United States as the pumpkin. As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, we eagerly embrace pumpkin-flavored everything. There's the now-essential pumpkin spice latte, pumpkin bread, muffins, cookies, soups, and even pumpkin-infused pastas and beers. Yet among all these seasonal delights, one stands out as the most cherished and time-honored: the pumpkin pie. This quintessential holiday dessert graces tables at both Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. With its smooth, spiced filling nestled in a flaky crust and topped with a dollop of whipped cream, pumpkin pie holds a place of honor alongside the turkey itself. But did you know that the pumpkin's journey to becoming a pie has deep roots in American soil? In this Thanksgiving-themed episode of Selective Ignorance, Mandii B is joined by super producer A-King and journalist Jayson Rodriguez for an insightful, humorous, and culturally rich exploration of the holiday’s deeper meaning, pop culture impact, and evolving traditions. Kicking things off with context and vibes [00:00], they set the tone by unpacking what Thanksgiving represents today—beyond turkey, football, and family photos—for Black and Brown communities, touching on gratitude, identity, and the social expectations that come with the holiday. The trio dives into the lesser-discussed origins of Thanksgiving [05:07], challenging myths from grade school narratives and exploring how history, colonialism, and Native American contributions are often overlooked in mainstream storytelling. This leads naturally into a lively breakdown of culinary traditions and family dynamics [09:51], from whose mac and cheese passes the test to the politics of potlucks, kitchen hierarchies, and the emotional weight food carries across generations. By [15:05], the conversation shifts toward Thanksgiving and capitalism, unpacking how the holiday transformed into a marketing engine—from over-the-top grocery ads to seasonal branding and the economics behind the holiday dinner table. That sets up a global lens on Thanksgiving [19:56], examining how other countries interpret or remix the holiday—through diaspora traditions, Caribbean influence, and cultural adaptation. As football enters the chat [25:02], Mandii, A-King, and Jayson explore the historical connection between the NFL and Thanksgiving, including how football became almost as essential to the holiday as stuffing and sweet potato pie. From there, they seamlessly pivot into the commercial aftermath—the birth of Black Friday [33:42], tracing its evolution from chaotic, door-busting retail mania to today’s online-driven, algorithm-powered consumer culture. Conversation returns to food and nostalgia [39:20], where they compare Thanksgiving food preferences, from classic vs. experimental menus, and why certain dishes are sacred: no raisins in the potato salad, no shortcuts on sweet potato pie, and why fried turkey is a forever MVP. Things take a hilarious and philosophical turn at [48:43], when the group explores the ethics and absurdity of cloning pets—sparked by real-life celebrity stories and the rising cost of “designer grief.” Finally, the episode closes on a reflective note [56:43], as they discuss gratitude, community, chosen family, and how Thanksgiving has evolved into a celebration far beyond its historical roots—emphasizing connection, culture, and conscious living in today’s world. “No Holes Barred: A Dual Manifesto Of Sexual Exploration And Power” w/ Tempest X!Sale Link Follow the host on Social MediaMandii B Instagram/X @fullcourtpumps Follow the show on Social MediaInstagram @selectiveignorancepodTiktok @selective.ignoranceX/Twitter @selectiveig_podSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, we are talking to beloved food writers and chefs Kenji López-Alt (Serious Eats, The Recipe) and Deb Perelman (Smitten Kitchen, The Recipe) about COMFORT FOODS! Is the "mac" in chili mac supposed to be plain noodles or mac and cheese? Is canned pumpkin as good as fresh pumpkin puree? If you make green bean casserole with fresh green beans, is it still a comfort food? What is the best way to soften hard ice cream? In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman chat (virtually) with Julia Trueblood and Karin Trachtenberg! Julia is an actor and producer; Karin is a theater maker, filmmaker, and director. Julia and Karin's film “Three A.M.” was featured and won the ‘Heartstrings' Award in Creative Guts' film festival in June 2024. In this episode, we discuss how Julia and Karin are telling stories from their perspectives as women and mothers and supporting women in film. Both took time off from their work to start their families, and for Karin, going back to theater was her doing something for herself after prioritizing her kids. Today, they're working with mostly all-women crews, in a super collaborative way. We also talk about the challenges inherent when you're wearing many different hats and why film festivals are an important way for filmmakers to share their work!Check out their films “Pumpkin Pie” and “Three A.M.” at the links below!Pumpkin Pie: www.instagram.com/pumpkin_pie_filmThree A.M.: www.facebook.com/p/Three-AM-100087678037399/Listen to this episode wherever you listen to podcasts or on our website www.CreativeGutsPodcast.com.
