Host: Andy Shiles, Lalo Solorzano Guest(s): Madison Lackey Published: June 11, 2026 Length: 46:08 Presented by: Global Training Center Summary Breaking into international trade can feel overwhelming, especially at a time when tariffs, enforcement, AI, and shifting regulations are changing the industry almost daily. In this episode of Simply Trade, Andy Shiles and Lalo Solorzano welcome Madison Lackey back to the show to discuss what it is really like to enter the trade compliance field as a young professional. Madison shares her path from studying agriculture business at Cal Poly to earning her customs broker license and becoming a trade compliance consultant at Blue Tiger International. She offers honest insight into the pressure new graduates face, the importance of slowing down before choosing a job, and why certifications, conferences, networking, and mentorship can make a major difference. The conversation also explores foreign trade zones, the growing knowledge gap as experienced professionals retire, and why young people have a major opportunity to step into the industry now. For students, early-career professionals, and managers building the next generation of trade talent, this episode offers practical advice and a fresh perspective. Main Topic / Discussion This episode focuses on career development in international trade compliance, especially for younger professionals entering the field. Madison Lackey discusses how her education, broker license, certifications, conference networking, and willingness to take on uncomfortable opportunities helped her build momentum early in her career. The discussion also highlights the current complexity of trade compliance, including tariffs, CBP enforcement, foreign trade zones, AI, and the retirement of experienced professionals. Madison emphasizes that this is a challenging but promising time to enter the industry because companies need people who can research, ask questions, build relationships, and adapt quickly. Key Takeaways • The customs broker license and CCS certification can provide a strong foundation, even for professionals who do not plan to work as brokers. • Young professionals should look beyond job titles and salary to understand company culture, responsibility, mentorship, and growth opportunities. • Conferences, webinars, certifications, and networking can help build credibility and open career doors. • Foreign trade zones are becoming more relevant as companies look for legal ways to manage duty and tariff exposure. • Relationship-building with CBP, agencies, colleagues, and mentors is essential in a fast-changing compliance environment. • Managers should challenge newer employees with meaningful work, not busy work, so they can build real-world skills. Scott Lackey grew up as a free-range kid roaming the woods and building forts, convinced he had all the time in the world. Then three questions from three people in the span of two weeks turned everything upside down. What followed was a winding path through the military, a failed invention, a Ponzi scheme, and a long list of promises he kept breaking to himself — until one sleepless night during Covid changed the trajectory of his life.In this episode of Fine Is a 4-Letter Word, host Lori Saitz sits down with Scott to unpack the stories behind his upcoming book, including why crossing the finish line is never the actual victory, how military service wired him differently than the civilian world could handle, and why the Ironman he completed wasn't really about endurance at all.Scott shares the moment he realized broken promises to himself were the root of his unrest, and why learning to listen to your inner voice, whether you call it God, instinct, or something else entirely, changes how you move through every challenge.Key Topics Covered:How Scott's free-range upbringing shaped his sense of adventure and created the blind spots that nearly derailed his early adult lifeThe two-week period where three questions from a coach, a teacher, and his father forced him to think about the future for the first timeHow an Army commercial became the clearest sense of direction he had ever feltServing with the 1st Infantry Division in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, and why four years of military service were irreplaceableThe Wire Dog invention he built in the desert, the $10,000 Ponzi scheme that ended the dream, and what those failures actually taught himWhy Scott believes the gifts are always in the pain, and how that principle shaped his leadership philosophyThe danger of taking advice from people who have nothing at stake in your decisionHow broken promises to yourself erode self-trust, and the internal wake-up call that led him to register for the IronmanThe practices Scott uses to stay connected to his inner voice, including journaling, fasting, long workouts, and meditationWhat the Ironman's question 'What are you willing to sacrifice?' ultimately revealed to him If you've ever felt stuck at 'fine' and couldn't put your finger on why, this conversation will hit close to home.GUEST BIO: Scott Lackey Scott Lackey is a US Army veteran, entrepreneur, Ironman athlete, and author whose life story reads like a series of pivot points, each one forced by failure, chance, or a voice he couldn't quite ignore. He grew up in rural America, joined the Army after seeing a TV commercial that spoke to something he couldn't articulate, and served with the 1st Infantry Division across Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. After leaving active duty, Scott pursued an entrepreneurial dream built around an invention he'd prototyped in the desert, only to have it derailed by a Ponzi scheme. What followed was years of building, failing, learning, and ultimately creating something worth sustaining. His upcoming book draws on all of it, examining why failure and pain carry more lasting value than the victories people celebrate, and why the hardest promises to keep are often the ones made in private, to yourself.Scott completed a full Ironman (140.6 miles) after a period of quiet internal reckoning during Covid, a decision he kept to himself for six weeks because he didn't yet trust himself to follow through. He's a husband, father, and dedicated student of what it means to live with integrity to your own inner compass.Connect With Scott:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottlackey1/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thescottlackey/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Thescottlackey/X: https://x.com/thescottlackeyYou may find some of the topics in his top 10 most requested keynotes of topical interest. And in today's hybrid and fast-moving work culture, trust isn't built in quarterly town halls or the occasional Slack message. It's built through consistent, clear, and HUMAN communication.Companies and leaders TALK about the importance of connection and community. And it's easy to believe your organization is doing a great job of maintaining an awesome corporate culture. Because you've got annual all-hands and open door policies, and “fun" team-building events. But let's be real. Leaders who are serious about building real trust are finding better ways to strengthen culture, create connection, and foster community. That's where I come in. Forward thinking companies are hiring me to produce internal/private podcasts. To bring leadership and employees together through authentic stories, real conversations, and meaningful connections. Just ahead of expanding (to a Top 200!) and re-ranking the MLB Pipeline Draft prospects list, Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo and Jason Ratliff do a deep dive into NCAA postseason play through decidedly Draft-colored glasses on this week's Pipeline Podcast. They bring up storylines across all 16 Regionals, set to begin Friday, from top prospect Roch Cholowsky and UCLA to No. 3 Vahn Lackey and his powerful Georgia Tech lineup and on to top pitching prospect Jackson Flora and Santa Barbara on a bigger stage, this episode has you covered. There was still time to talk professional prospects, of course, with the guys breaking down the newest addition to the Top 100, Nationals infielder Devin Fitz-Gerald, and a pair of Top 100 players getting called up to the bigs for the first time in Pedro Ramirez (Cubs) and Gage Jump (A's). As always, the trio wrapped things up with a fun Mailbag question about where Lackey would rank on the last three Draft lists. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode of Find Your Finish Line, I sit down with Scott Lackey, an Army veteran, entrepreneur, IRONMAN athlete, and author, for a real and honest conversation about resilience, failure, and what it takes to rebuild your life. Scott opens up about the defining moments that shaped him, from his early decisions after high school to his time in the military and the setbacks he faced in business, including losing control of a company he built after raising millions in funding. What stands out is how he's learned to see failure not as the end, but as the foundation for growth. We also dive into his new book, Wake Up to Die Again, and what that title really means. It's about letting go of the parts of ourselves that no longer serve us so we can become who we're meant to be. This conversation goes beyond racing and training. It's about facing the truth, stopping the habit of outrunning our struggles, and realizing that what we're searching for isn't out there, it's already within us. If you're in a tough spot or just looking to grow, this one will meet you where you are. Learn more about Scott at: https://scottlackey.com/

Every ambitious executive in the service sector has felt it: that nagging suspicion that, despite the high-performance software, the latest marketing "hacks," and the tireless hours, the business is actually running you. In this episode, Karl sits down with Jessica Lackey, a Harvard and McKinsey-trained strategist, to dissect the quiet crisis facing small and mid-sized service businesses. If you feel like you've been building a "Frankenstein" company—stitching together pieces of advice from gurus and competitors that don't quite fit your anatomy—this conversation is the mirror you need to look into. The Casino Trap Most leaders are playing a game they didn't realize they signed up for. Jessica, author of Leaving the Casino, argues that service-based businesses often fall into a repetitive cycle of "betting" on the next big tactic without understanding the fundamental architecture of their own success. We explore why adopting a strategy before defining your business's soul is a recipe for operational exhaustion. Is your business a nimble boutique or a high-volume engine? If you don't know, your tactics are likely fighting each other. Beyond the Frankenstein Model We've all seen it: a company with a high-end service heart but a cut-throat, automated sales soul. This internal friction is what Jessica calls the "Frankenstein" effect. It leads to a business that looks functional from the outside but is barely holding together at the seams. This episode challenges you to stop looking for the "right" answer and start asking the right questions about your foundational values and goals. Before you can scale, you must achieve Business Clarity. We dive into why the most sophisticated AI tools and automated rhythms are completely useless—and often dangerous—if they are solving the wrong problems. The "Roots to Fruits" Perspective Forget traditional, cold KPIs for a moment. Jessica introduces a more organic, sustainable way to view your progress. By shifting your focus from just the "fruits" (the revenue and the results) to the "seeds" (your daily activities) and the "roots" (your long-term projects), you can begin to spot "sprouts"—those early signals of growth that most executives miss because they are too busy looking at the bottom line. Why Systems Must Serve the Human Systems are often viewed as cages—rigid structures that stifle the "sparkle" of a service-based business. Jessica and Karl flip this narrative. They discuss how to create a "rhythm of business" that actually protects your creativity and allows your team to focus on the human side of care and consulting. If you are tired of the "administrative gunk" and feel like your business has become a series of manual workarounds and mismatched strategies, it's time to stop betting and start building. Adam breaks down how Onebrief's culture of iteration, empathy, and urgency shapes everything—from watching users stress-test the product to delivering changes in hours, not days. They dig into Onebrief's evolution from a kanban board to a full mission-planning platform, why “don't be the contractor no one wants in the room” is a guiding principle, and how true value comes from mastering workflows, eliminating friction, and meeting users at their exact point of need.Adam also reflects on the broader purpose of defense tech: preparing so well that capabilities deter conflict rather than drive it.A candid, practical look at building tools that are as reliable as a rifle—and evolving them at the pace the mission demands.Connect with Adam Lackey: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adam-j-lackey/Connect with Tyler Sweatt: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tylersweatt

In this episode, we are joined by Dalton Lackey and Teagan Murphy, co-authors of the article "The COVID-19 Murders": Prison death-worlds and the fatal convenience of crisis. Their work offers a piercing critique of how carceral institutions weaponized the pandemic—not as an unprecedented emergency, but as a tactical opportunity to deepen control, dehumanization, and death. We'll begin by hearing from Dalton and Teagan about their political motivations, the methodologies they employed, and the intellectual scaffolding behind their analysis. From there, we'll unpack their challenge to the dominant narrative of "failure"—a framing that presumes the prison system was simply overwhelmed by crisis. Instead, they argue that the pandemic revealed not incompetence, but calculated cruelty. We'll also examine how disaster operates as a tool of tactical evolution within prisons. As the authors write, "Rather than revealing entirely new challenges, our findings demonstrate how the pandemic instead exacerbates what the literature has suggested are the preexisting goals of carceral punishment." We'll discuss how incarcerated people themselves narrated these shifts—how they recognized the charade of "safety" and named the degradation that exceeded even the brutal norm. From psychic death and coerced docility to the punitive treatment of those living with HIV/AIDS, we'll trace the historical continuities and contemporary parallels that shape this death-world. We'll ask how social distancing protocols, meant to protect, instead expanded estrangement—and how preexisting conditions of confinement intensified the crisis. Teagan Murphy (any/all) is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Their research, conducted primarily through qualitative interviews, ethnography, and content analysis, focuses on institutional and carceral logics and the reproduction of inequities via narratives of deservingness. Their dissertation, which draws on data collected from their time as an active courtwatcher in Prince George's County, presents a critique of the distinction courts draw between criminalized defendants and "the community," resulting in a pretrial system where Black bodies are deemed public safety risks that antagonize the moral sanctity of white civil society. They also argue for a literary reframing of "courtwatching," moving from reformist interpretations to an antifascist one aligned with broader abolitionist goals. IG: @veganmurphy Dalton Lackey (they/them) is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Their research broadly concerns structural anti-blackness, carcerality and punishment, revolutionary social movements, and Fanonian psychopolitics. Dalton is currently working on their dissertation project, which explores the complexities of invention and signification that emerge in the haze of radical collective action against the anti-black social order. Portland, Oregon is brewing a star. At 6'3", Jayla Lackey is a two-way force who's turning heads across the country—equal parts poised playmaker and relentless competitor. If you haven't heard the name yet, you will. Soon.Jayla fell for the game around age 11–12, joining ML20 and sharpening her skills under coaches Joy and DeMarcus Best. With a high motor on defense and a fearless approach on offense, she's become a matchup problem anywhere she plays.Traveling with ML20, Jayla's gone toe-to-toe with elite competition nationwide. “You have to be fearless,” she says—and her calm under pressure proves it. That poise is backed by real work: reps, film, and nonstop development.“I attack on offense, I can shoot, and I make good plays,” Jayla says. Her calling card is defense—ML20's identity is to turn stops into easy buckets. “Defense wins games,” a Joy Best mantra Jayla has fully embraced. She's adding range, too. The mid-range is coming together, and she's stretching to the three—the kind of growth that makes a good player scary.Jayla calls her ML20 teammates a second family. “We know each other's strengths and weaknesses. That chemistry helps us play better together.” It showed with a Final Four run at Power 24, and the group keeps trending up.At Benson Polytechnic, Jayla's focused on restoring championship expectations. “Win league—and chase state.” Simple goal. Big energy.Colleges and scouts have taken notice. Jayla's checklist for the next level: a family environment, elite development, and a program that will prepare her for the WNBA and overseas opportunities. “I want to play for my country, too. That's the dream.”Balance matters. Jayla loves music, drawing, reading, and time with family and friends.Playlist: SZA, Drake, Kendrick LamarPortland eats: Screen Door (chicken & waffles) and Noho's (short ribs + mac salad)

OA1134 - Mere hours after a literal pat on the back from Donald Trump on live TV, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts delivered a 5-4 decision against him in the emergency litigation over Trump's unconstitutional efforts to eliminate foreign aid funding. How much of a win was this really, and why did Samuel Alito spend eight pages in dissent pretending to be “stunned” by the majority's radical assertion that the federal government should pay out debts incurred by valid acts of Congress? We then turn to a less-noticed recent Supreme Court decision with concerning implications for the future of civil rights litigation before appreciating recent Congressional wins: blue city mayors schooling the House Oversight Committee without ever giving up even a single point in six hours, and Senate Democrats taking a meaningful united stand for trans lives.
