Celebrating their 50th Anniversary, The Manhattan Transfer continues to set the standard as one of the world's greatest and most innovative vocal bands. Winners of eleven Grammy Awards, with millions of records sold worldwide, this amazing quartet is building upon the extraordinary legacy created by founder Tim Hauser who organized the four-part harmony group along with Janis Siegel (alto), Alan Paul (tenor), and Laurel Masse (soprano) on October 1, 1972. Cheryl Bentyne (soprano) replaced Masse in 1979, and Trist Curless (bass) replaced Tim Hauser following his passing on October 16, 2014.
On October 31, the Biden Administration rolled out its long-anticipated update to the fiduciary rule. While it's got a new name (the Retirement Security Rule), it builds on and extends the Labor Department's reach by both focusing on the needs and perceptions of the retirement investor and eliminating the “regular basis” aspect of the so-called five-part test that has long been an integral component of what was considered to define an ERISA fiduciary. In the latest episode Nevin (Adams) and Fred (Reish) consider the historical framework of the ERISA fiduciary definition, how the proposed rule would alter that, and what obstacles lie between that proposal and its ultimate adoption. Over the past several months –following the United States Supreme Court's decision in Hughes v. Northwestern University – a number of cases, notably the Oshkosh case—and those of CommonSpirit and TriHealth—have brought with them what appears to be a higher standard of “plausibility” in asserting claims that can get past the standard motion to dismiss. In this episode Nevin & Fred take a look at the new litigation landscape for ERISA plans, as well as providing updates on a series of suits involving the BlackRock LifePath target-date funds, as well as a surprising decision regarding rollovers and the fiduciary rule – and a flurry of legislation regarding the Labor Department's Prudence and Loyalty in Selecting Plan Investments and Exercising Shareholder Rights” – a.k.a. the so-called ”ESG rule.” Oshkosh Lays Down a New Standard Gosh! King, Chaka Khan, Joe Zawinul, Stéphane Grappelli, Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie… ©️ 2022 Craft Recordings., Manufactured & Distributed by Concord Alan Paul - vocal Janis Siegel - vocal Cheryl Bentyne - vocal Trist Curless - vocal WDR Funkhausorchester Jörg Achim Keller - conductor #vocaljazz #bigband --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/konstantins/message
Long ago and far away, The Manhattan Transfer's late founding member Tim Hauser hosted a weekly vocal music show on KCRW. His conspirator Janis Siegel became a regular guest on our airwaves when she brought in quirky tracks to Morning Becomes Meshuga.

This year, 2022, the group is celebrating their 50th Anniversary with a worldwide tour and a new album FIFTY, being released by Craft/Concord in October. Alan was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey and began his professional career on Broadway at the age of 12 in the original Broadway cast of OLIVER. As a child actor, he worked extensively in stage, film and TV and then took a hiatus from his career to further his music studies. He entered Kean University (Newark State College), as a Voice Major and earned a BA in Music Education. In 1992 Alan received an Honorary Doctorate degree in Human Letters from his alma mater, Kean University and another in Music from Berklee College of Music along with his Transfer partners. After graduation, Alan and was cast in the original Broadway production of GREASE, where he created the roles of Teen Angel and Johnny Casino. In 1972, while still performing in Grease, Alan met Janis Siegel, Tim Hauser and Laurel Massé and together formed The Manhattan Transfer. In 1975 they released their first album on Atlantic Records which propelled the group from playing clubs in New York City to international fame. In 1979, Cheryl Bentyne joined the group after a car accident forced Laurel Massé to stop. They have recorded over thirty albums, have been inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, The East Coast Music Hall of Fame, received Lifetime Achievement Awards from The Society of Singers, Barbershop Harmony Society and the National Music Council. https://www.facebook.com/alanpaulofficiall
Kari connects Alan to his grandfather, as they talk about scatting as channeling, "Soul Food to Go" as an homage to Tim Hauser, being in a legendary group and the ego, the metaphysical "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone," harmony and chakras opening up, time not being linear, being present in a moment that was years ago, life going by like a flash, the dichotomy of the soul going on forever while the body which feels real is temporary and like life (an illusion), grace, the soul consciousness and a different way of life, signing up to be in this moment and a new paradigm, how he takes care of his voice daily after asking Tony Bennett what hedoes for his voice, playing roles for one another's life lessons, meditation, a life of service, "Many Lives, Many Master" and past life regressions.

Janis Siegel was born in Brooklyn and fell in love with the pop music of her day – doo-wop, pop, girl groups and folk music. She began her professional singing career when she was 12 years old, and was already a seasoned professional by the time she finished high school. Her early career sounds like a movie script: singing back up on pop records when she was a teenager, hanging out on the West Village scene in the late 1960’s, dropping out of nursing school… A chance meeting with a singer / New York City taxi driver named Tim Hauser would lead her to join the vocal group The Manhattan Transfer. The group soon became enormously successful, and they still endure today. They’ve recorded over 20 records, won 10 Grammys, collaborated with some of the most exciting artists around, and influenced generations of new singers. Janis has also maintained a solo career since the early 1980’s. Her most recent solo record, “Night Songs” was released in 2013 on Palmetto Records. Here she talks about her career, the importance of following what you’re passionate about, and the mysterious qualities of four-part vocal harmony. www.janissiegel.comStream it here or download it from the iTunes music store.
Tim Hauser (founder of the Manhattan Transfer) has set down his microphone for a wooden spoon. This 8 time Grammy winner hasn't retired from touring just yet. Instead, he has a new food company based on his early travels with the Manhattan Transfer. He fell in love with the food in Italy and decided to make a go of it and launched "I Made Sauce!" Each of the recipes is inspired by a special meal he had in certain regions of Italy. Hear how he came to do this and also about his career with the Manhattan Transfer.
