Interview by Kris PetersDrowning Pool's multi-platinum debut album, Sinner, celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special reissue via Craft Recordings, marking its release date on June 5. First unleashed in 2001, Sinner remains a towering monument of the nu metal era. It quickly rocketed the Dallas-based heavy metal band into global stardom, debuting at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 and achieving RIAA Platinum status within its first six weeks. At the absolute centre of the album's cultural impact is the explosive hit single, Bodies. Instantly recognizable by its blunt, repetitive, and devastating opening riff, the track became an omnipresent cultural staple. It has soundtracked countless action sports videos, movie trailers, professional wrestling promos, and festival mosh pits and has been a life mantra for countless fans around the world. Alongside Bodies, standout tracks like Tear Away and the aggressive title track Sinner gave the record its thematic weight, exploring internal conflict and religious pressures. Sinner was also the first, and only, Drowning Pool album to feature original vocalist Dave Williams before his tragic passing in 2002 and remains the benchmark for debut albums across all genres. With the Anniversary issue out this Friday, and Drowning Pool preparing to hit the road where they will be playing Sinner in full, guitarist and founding member CJ Pierce has donated some of his time to chat with his Australian family about the album and plenty more. One of the topics of discussion was Williams and the emotions that invariably arise when Sinner is mentioned."Dave Williams was such a great human being, and he was excited to play rock music," CJ reminisced. "And just the stuff you don't think about, man, because life is just going, going, going. So it's been a time of self-reflection. And then us going over all the songs on the entire record. I'm excited to play this live, and I've been re-inspired by it, all three of us. And we just started writing all this new stuff. We walked into the studio with all these ideas we've been working on all year long, and all of a sudden, it's just like, it just started pouring out of us, man. So, I'm super excited about this song because we've been really inspired by the first record, and we're here doing it. The other thing that's exciting is we haven't been able to play the record in its entirety in so long. So the hardcore fans that have been with us get to see that again. And then there's a whole new generation of teenagers to 20-year-olds that are coming out that are finding nu metal again. So, for us to be able to play this record for them, for them to see it after so much time is super exciting. So, I'm all jacked up about it, man. I can't wait."In the full interview, CJ ran through his memories of making Sinner, their hopes for how it would be received and the weight of a massive commercial success. He reluctantly picked his personal favourite song from Sinner, running us through stories on a number of the songs and how they came into being. We discussed the limited edition vinyl release of the album as well as the three bonus tracks on the digital release, including Rob Zombie's The Man Without Fear. Drowning Pool's upcoming tour was mentioned, as was the possibility of an Australian tour early next year. CJ spoke of his fondness for Australia and the relationships he has built here, before moving on to new material and what we can expect and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, Paul Motian. In this episode, host Scott Dudelson sits down with Norman Greenbaum—the singer-songwriter behind one of the most iconic rock anthems of all time, “Spirit in the Sky.” Released in 1969, the song became an instant classic, a staple of FM radio, and a fixture in films and TV for decades. Now, with the recent re-release of the Spirit in the Sky album by Craft Recordings, Greenbaum reflects on the creation, impact, and lasting power of his legendary hit. He recalls the surreal experience of performing on American Bandstand, the rapid ascent of “Spirit in the Sky,” and the whirlwind tours that followed alongside bands like The Doors and The Moody Blues. With honesty and humor, he opens up about the recording challenges, career highs and lows, and the re-birth of Spirit in the Sky This episode is more than just a look back—it's a celebration of musical originality, cultural legacy, and the enduring spirit behind a song that continues to inspire generations. Norman Greenbaum gave the world "Spirit in the Sky," one of the greatest records ever made. He chats with us about his iconic classic, as well as other musical adventures and misadventures over the last few decades. PART ONE: Paul and Scott chat about Instagram, artist accessibility, and what the heck Norman Greenbaum looks like. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Norman GreenbaumABOUT NORMAN GREENBAUMNorman Greenbaum might be known as a one hit wonder, but that one hit is one of the most wonderous records to ever hit the airwaves. With its infectious groove and unparalleled fuzz tone guitar, “Spirit in the Sky” was recorded in San Francisco in 1969 and quickly climbed to the Top 5 in the US and number 1 in a half dozen countries around the world. It has been certified double platinum for sales of over 2 million, and is among Rolling Stone magazine's “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” It has reached #1 in the UK in three different decades by three different artists and has been covered by everyone from Elton John to the Blind Boys of Alabama. After his debut LP, Greenbaum went on to release the albums Back Home Again and Petaluma in 1970 and 1972, respectively. Though he gave up recording in the early 1970s, “Spirit in the Sky” remains one of the most popular songs of all time. With nearly 600 million streams on Spotify alone, it has been featured in films such as Apollo 13, Oceans 11, and Guardians of the Galaxy, and in commercials for American Express, Chase Bank, Nike, and Budweiser. To celebrate the song's legacy, Craft Recordings has recently released a brand-new Dolby Atmos mix of the single as well as a new vinyl release of the long out-of-print Spirit in the Sky LP, cut from the original tapes.

Sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnFinger Eleven, a Canadian rock band, has made a mark in alternative music with their genre-defying sound. Known for their hits like "Paralyzer" and "One Thing," they've captivated fans with anthemic melodies, introspective ballads, and energetic performances. With over two decades of music, Finger Eleven continues to push boundaries and redefine the alternative rock landscape.Craft Recordings pays tribute to the enduring career of Finger Eleven with the release of their first collection of hit singles, titled "Greatest Hits." Spanning over two decades, this album showcases the band's diverse range with beloved fan favorites, including their multi-platinum hit "Paralyzer" and the Juno-nominated "One Thing." Chart-topping tracks such as "Falling On" and "Living in a Dream" are also featured. As a special treat, the 12-track set includes a previously-unreleased cover of Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine," a long-standing live staple, as well as Finger Eleven's first new single in over seven years, titled "Together Right." The single is available for streaming and downloading today.Frontman Scott Anderson explains the meaning behind "Together Right," stating that it symbolizes unity and explores the strength of bonds between people. The song's optimistic-sounding chorus masks a desperate plea for another party to stick around and face challenges together. Recorded in Toronto last year with drummer/producer Steve Molella, the track packs a punch with its anthemic guitar-driven hooks and high-energy handclaps. The "Greatest Hits" album will be released on CD and digitally on June 16th, with the vinyl edition following on August 25th. This vinyl release marks the band's first-ever venture into the vinyl format. A limited-edition Blue Smoke pressing will be exclusively available through the band's website and CraftRecordings.com. Additionally, indie record stores will carry an exclusive Yellow Marble variant. Fans can also find a collectible version of the CD with unique packaging at Walmart, along with a Walmart-exclusive Purple Smoke LP. All formats are available for pre-order now.Reflecting on this momentous retrospective release, Anderson shares his excitement, stating that after six albums and over 20 years together, Finger Eleven is thrilled to finally release a greatest hits album. He emphasizes the band's dedication to selecting the right songs, determining the running order, and curating a vinyl version that complements the beautiful new art created by James Black.Finger Eleven, one of Canada's best-selling bands and Juno Award-winning rockers, has forged a lasting legacy with their genre-defying sound. From cathartic metal and alt-rock balladry to danceable funk and power pop, their music consistently surprises and engages fans. The band's story began in 1990 when Scott Anderson, Rick Jackett, James Black, Sean Anderson, and drummer Rob Gommerman (later replaced by Rich Beddoe) started playing together in high school. They released their debut album, "Letters from Chutney," under the name "Rainbow Butt Monkeys" in 1995, before adopting the name Finger Eleven for their subsequent LP, "Tip." The album caught the attention of Wind-up Records, who signed the band in 1997 and re-released "Tip" a year later.Through relentless touring with bands like Creed and Fuel, as well as participating in the Vans Warped Tour, Finger Eleven broke into the US market with singles like "Above," which became a Top 40 hit on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. They continued their momentum with "The Greyest of Blue Skies" (2000), featuring singles like "First Time" and "Drag You Down," which achieved Gold certification in Canada and reached No. 17 on This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

This recently released 4LP set brings together the albums “Cookbook, Vol. 1,” “Cookbook, Vol. 2,” “Cookbook, Vol. 3,” & “Smokin'”, which he recorded with organist Shirley Scott. How does our guests feel this release turned out? And is Waxed producing yet another mastering of "Kind of Blue"? These questions and more will be answered by listening to this very episode on Vinyl Community Podcasts The Waxed YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@theboomerscalper The Jazz Bums YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@JazzBums More information on Vinyl Community Podcasts: https://vinylcommunitypodcasts.com/
Victory Records is a Chicago-based record label founded by Tony Brummel. It operates a music publishing company called "Another Victory, Inc." and is the distributor of several record labels. It has featured many prominent artists including Thursday, Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, Streetlight Manifesto, and A Day to Remember. Some Victory bands I've interviewed include Doug fromThe Sleeping, Andrew from Strife, and Mark from Shutdown. I also interviewed Double J who used to worked for Victory for 10 years as a designer who was basically their art director. In September 2019, years after buying part of the label's catalogue, Concord bought Victory Records and Another Victory for $30 million. Craft Recordings has been managing Victory Record' catalog since Concord acquired the label. Victory has since not signed any new bands or released new records. Instead, the label operates for the current distribution of the label's alumni, as well as for reissues. Victory's catalogue includes 4,500 master recordings and 3,500 compositions through its publisher Another Victory. Monika has been listening to the show for a while and would always message me with random stories about people I've interviewed. I found out she worked for Victory and she said she'd like to tell some stories since no one really wants to talk honestly about the label. I got her on the Skype and this is what we talk about: What could they listen to at the office The cops showing up The Holiday party Did the staff know about the deals bands were getting The Sleeping The Damnation AD showcase Blackberrys 360 deals The soda machine story Freezing checks And a ton more Here are some people I'd like to interview if you have a connection - Greg from Gokart, The Lunachicks, Dan Adriano just about Tuesday, Rainer Maria, Ace from Early November, Steve Evetts, just to name a few. King, Chaka Khan, Joe Zawinul, Stéphane Grappelli, Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie… ©️ 2022 Craft Recordings., Manufactured & Distributed by Concord Alan Paul - vocal Janis Siegel - vocal Cheryl Bentyne - vocal Trist Curless - vocal WDR Funkhausorchester Jörg Achim Keller - conductor #vocaljazz #bigband --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/konstantins/message

Maggie and extraordinary pianist and arranger, Alan Broadbent discuss the 30th Anniversary of Unforgettable… with Love, the legendary singer and songwriter Natalie Cole's biggest album to date. Since its initial release in 1991, it has sold over seven million copies and also won Cole seven GRAMMY© Awards. The album features Cole singing several songs her father Nat King Cole recorded, nearly 20 years after she initially refused to cover her father's songs during live concerts. Cole produced vocal arrangements for the songs, with piano accompaniment by her uncle Ike Cole and many other first rate pianists and arrangers. The album's title track, an interactive duet with her father, would go on to be one of her most memorable recordings.Alan Broadbent was born in Auckland, New Zealand and in 1966, at the age of 19, received a Downbeat Magazine scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1969 he was asked to join Woody Herman's band as his pianist and arranger for 3 years. In 1972 he settled in Los Angeles, beginning a musical relationship with the legendary singer Irene Kral (no relation to Diana Krall). Soon he was also invited into the studio scene as a pianist for the great Nelson Riddle, David Rose and Johnny Mandel. In the early 90s he was asked to be a part of Natalie Cole's famous “Unforgettable” cd, at which time he toured as her pianist and, a little while later, as her conductor. At this time he wrote an orchestral arrangement for her second video with her dad, “When I Fall In Love”, which won him his first Grammy Award for “best orchestral arrangement accompanying a vocal”.Turning PointsShortly after, he became a member of Charlie Haden's Quartet West, touring the festivals of Europe, UK and the USA. It was while with this group that he won his second Grammy, an orchestral accompaniment written for Shirley Horn of Leonard Bernstein's “Lonely Town”.As a soloist and with his jazz trio, Broadbent has been nominated for Grammys twice for best instrumental performance, in the company of such artists as Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins and Keith Jarrett. In 2007 he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit, an honor he holds in high regard. The NowBroadbent is Diana Krall's conductor for her occasional orchestra concerts and is the conductor on her “Live in Paris” DVD. Recently he has been the arranger on Glenn Frey's cd with strings, “After Hours”, and wrote six string arrangements for Sir Paul McCartney's “Kisses On The Bottom” with the London Symphony. He has just returned from solo piano concerts in the UK, Poland and France. It has been his lifelong goal, through his orchestral arrangements and jazz improvisations, to discover, in popular music and standard songs, deeper feelings of communication and love.Source: https://craftrecordings.com/products/natalie-cole-unforgettable-with-love-30th-anniversary-edition-cdSource: https://www.alanbroadbent.comThis episode is from an archive from the KPFK program Profiles adapted for podcast. We had the pleasure of interviewing Marko DeSantis of Sugarcult over Zoom video! In August 2001, SoCal rockers Sugarcult burst onto the scene with their anthemic debut album Start Static. Combining high-energy punk riffs and irresistible power-pop melodies with a heavy dose of youthful angst, Start Static quickly earned the group a legion of fans, and spawned three hit singles, "Bouncing Off the Walls," "Pretty Girl (The Way)," and "Stuck in America." Now, two decades later, Craft Recordings commemorates this enduring favorite with a deluxe 20th anniversary vinyl and digital reissue. Set for an October 8 street date and available for pre-order, the vinyl edition of Start Static (20th-Anniversary Edition) will feature the original album — newly remastered by the GRAMMY®-winning engineer, Paul Blakemore — plus three special bonus tracks: an early demo of "Say I'm Sorry," a live version of "Bouncing Off the Walls," plus a spirited cover of Elvis Costello & The Attraction's "No Action." The album comes housed in a gatefold jacket, featuring sculpted emboss printing and updated liner notes from the band. Fans can also find a special variant of the LP — pressed on clear vinyl and limited to 500 units — exclusively on Sugarcult's website and at Craft Recordings' online store. The digital edition, also available October 8, features an additional, previously unreleased live version of the band's hit single, "Stuck in America." and "Bouncing Off the Walls (Live)" Formed in Santa Barbara, CA, in 1998, Sugarcult — whose original lineup consisted of Tim Pagnotta (vocals/guitar), Airin Older (bass/vocals), Marko DeSantis (guitar), and Ben Davis (drums)— made their mark as one of the most dynamic and entertaining pop-punk bands to come out of the 2000s. After independently releasing two demos and two EPs, the quartet caught the ears of Ultimatum Music, who signed Sugarcult and connected them with producer Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More, The Replacements) to work on their debut full-length. Start Static went on to sell more than 300,000 copies, while the band embarked on nearly three years of non-stop touring. In addition to playing the main stage of Warped Tour and appearing at festivals like Glastonbury (UK), Summer Sonic (Japan), and Soundwaves (Australia), the group joined Green Day's American Idiot tour in the U.S. and Japan, as well as Blink 182's European arena tour. They would go on to headline hundreds of shows across North America, Europe, and Japan. Multiple songs off Start Static, meanwhile, could be heard on popular shows like MTV's Laguna Beach and in films like Van Wilder (the stars of which, Ryan Reynolds and Tara Reid, appeared in the music video for "Bouncing Off the Walls.)" In the liner notes, guitarist DeSantis recalls that Start Static "was our confrontation and/or handshake with the world; our chance to get people to pay attention, earn their respect, and then, hopefully, win their hearts. The album title fit the narrative of the songs—which are mostly vignettes of young adult anxiety over the trials of messy romance and post-adolescent dissatisfaction and uncertainty. [Start Static] was our album title and our mission statement." Following Start Static, Sugarcult went on to release two more acclaimed albums (2004's Palm Trees and Power Lines and 2006's Lights Out), and two DVDs before embarking on an extended hiatus in 2008. Since then, each band member has excelled in a variety of fields within the music industry. Tim Pagnotta is an award-winning, multi-platinum-selling songwriter and producer who has collaborated with the likes of Weezer, Blink 182, Neon Trees, Walk the Moon, and Elle King. Airin Older went on to become a founding member of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and joined British alt-rock group thenewno2, featuring Dhani Harrison. Marko DeSantis is now a professor of music business, artist development and artist coaching at Los Angeles College of Music, Musicians Institute College of Music and Citrus College. He has also enjoyed several DJ residencies in the U.S. and Japan and has been featured as a guest speaker and panelist at SXSW, UCLA, and Sonos LEAD, among others. Ben Davis, meanwhile, enjoys a successful career writing and producing music for film, TV and commercials. We want to hear from you! The Kids Crew is joined by Charles Bergman who is a writer, photographer, and speaker and longtime professor at Pacific Lutheran University. He also wrote Every Penguin in the World: A Quest to See Them All. We learn about different species of penguins, their habits, and more interesting facts! Chinstrap penguin photo by Derek Oyen Not only does Mr. Bergman share his penguin interactions, but our crew also share their love of the penguins at the Albuquerque BioPark's Penguin Exhibit where King, Macaroni, and Gentoo penguins live. There are 15 other species of penguins in the world, some of which are critically endangered. But, all penguins are on thin ice. Overfishing, changing ocean temperatures, and pollution threaten their survival. All this plus more interesting facts. Mixed with great music! Learn more: How can you help protect penguins? Eliot Zigmund, American jazz drummer best known for being one-third of Bill Evans’ legendary Trio (as well as stints with Jim Hall, Chet Baker, Stan Getz and so many others), joins us this week on GITM. Zigmund describes auditioning for Bill Evans at the Village Vanguard in front of a live audience, the experience of gigging 5-6 nights per week and the art of playing with the incomparable Vince Guaraldi. Likening his role to that of a carpenter, Eliot shares thoughts on leaving space and adding color to the immortal Evans’ Trio performances. This week we are also joined by jazz producer Nick Phillips!
Award-winning singer-songwriter Donovan Woods—who splits his time between Toronto and Nashville —has been rapidly garnering esteem for his heart-tuggingly beautiful ballads, like the recently released duet “IOWA” (which Wheel of Fortune would credit in the form of Before and After “Aoife O'Donovan Woods”). In this latest installment of GITM, with additional guest-host Brad Kennard, Woods sits down to chat about a songwriter’s unique challenges in the age of Covid, his unique and exciting collaborations with dancers and visual artists around the world, and the ethos behind his own record label. Fun is abound, with dichotomies of relief/revenge, hospitality/rudeness and kindness/cruelty swung around freely like confetti. It’s a party!
Indie legend Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes appears on the latest installment of Gone In 30 Minutes to chat about life on the big, blue(ish) marble. A seminal figure of punk, Ritchie thinks back to his upbringing in Milwaukee, the band’s…let’s say…less-than-ideal deal with Slash Records and the incessant nature of music itself. And Ritchie hasn’t stopped either—in addition to curating for annual music and arts festival MONA FOMA, in his homeland of Tasmania, he’s been broadcasting daily performances so we never lose touch of that “American Music.”

Los Angeles-based Sean and Sara Watkins (of GRAMMY®-Award-winning Nickel Creek) share how their musical neighborhood has contracted and expanded over the past year. The brother-sister pair (their album "brother sister" came out in 2020) has taken Watkins Family Hour—their well-loved variety show in residence at Largo for the last 20 years—to Sean’s backyard, where they’ve livestreamed intimate, socially distanced concerts via Patreon. They discuss holding communal space for their Largo family while opening the doors to new friends outside LA and muse on the ways in which lockdown has afforded us a deeper capacity for feeling (are we all crying more?). Finally, they offer a tender reflection on their dear late friend, drummer Don Heffington.
