Den store dag står for døren.
Blossom Dearie: what a great name! It was her real name, too. Well, Margrethe Blossom Dearie - she dropped the first part, and that was a good choice for Show Biz, I think. And, that voice: light, breathy, girlish, delightfully witty - I loved it from the first time I heard it. And, not only was she a fantastic vocalist, but considered one of the great jazz pianists - Bill Evans was inspired by her chord work; that tells you something. Everything I've Got Belongs to You comes off of her first album for Verve, deriving from the Broadway show “By Jupiter” by Rodgers and Hart, which ran for 427 performances in 1942. The Amazonian lyrics juxtaposed with the little girl voice is kinky perfection. And, her articulation - hilarious and sexy, delivers a delightful confection. Though she was born in Upstate New York, she made her bones in Paris when she formed the vocal group The Blue Stars, which later became the famous “Swingle Singers”. Always entrepreneurial, she started her own label, Daffodil Records in '74. I immediately recognized her voice from the educational recordings School House Rock and Multiplication Rock (the latter winning her a Grammy in 1973). Blossom Dearie - an unforgettable name for an incomparable singer.
Joining Alexa this week to chat about the Alexander Technique is Patrick Ardagh-Walter, a professional singer who has worked with the likes of the Royal Opera. He's a trained Alexander technique teacher himself and is an assistant at a training school for teachers of the Alexander Technique in Paris. Patrick is here to tell us where the technique originated from, how it can benefit singers, and he also shares with us an exercise that we can try out for ourselves and use in the studio with the singers we work with. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Alexander Technique is a method for improving posture and movement, addressing habits of tension that can interfere with optimal functioning. Developed by F. Matthias Alexander, it emphasises self-awareness and mindful reeducation of the body's alignment and coordination. Practitioners learn to release unnecessary muscular tension, promoting better posture, ease of movement, and overall well-being. This benefits singers by promoting optimal posture, breath control, and vocal coordination. It helps singers release tension, allowing for a free and natural flow of breath, enhancing vocal resonance. By improving overall body awareness, singers can maintain better alignment and support, preventing strain and vocal fatigue. The technique fosters a mindful approach to movement, enabling singers to refine their technique and optimise vocal performance, contributing to long-term vocal health and expressive singing. BEST MOMENTS ‘The technique isn't an activity where you do it and get on with life, it's a re-education' ‘It's difficult to let go of something that feels familiar and do something unfamiliar instead' ‘You can't ask someone's brain to do something if they've never experienced before' ‘Almost everybody I see tends to stand in a way which interferes with the breathing mechanism' EPISODE RESOURCES How You Stand, How You Move, How You Live by Missy Vineyard Feldenkrais Method: https://feldenkrais.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep.63 Developing a Singer's Self Awareness and Clarifying Intention with Robert Sussuma Ep.65 The Top Benefits of Vocal Massage with Lydia Flock Ep.74 Understanding Manual Therapy with Walt Fritz Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT): https://alexandertechnique.co.uk/teacher-training-courses American Society for the Alexander Technique: https://www.amsatonline.org/aws/AMSAT/pt/sp/home_page Australian Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (AUSTAT): https://www.austat.org.au/ The Use of the Self by F. Alexa is joined by Michele Weir, a renowned figure in vocal jazz education and arranging. Michele is the founder of the online school Music Habit and the creator of the app ScatAbility. Additionally, she has written several books on jazz, so who better to talk you through the topic of how to sing and teach this genre? KEY TAKEAWAYS Jazz is a diverse genre with various styles and sub-genres. New Orleans jazz originated in the early 20th century and features collective improvisation. Bebop, which emerged in the 1940s, is known for its complex harmonies, fast tempos and intricate improvisations. Cool Jazz developed in the late 1940s and 1950s, and has a more relaxed and laid-back style, emphasising controlled emotions and intricate arrangements. Contemporary jazz, a diverse category that encompasses various modern jazz styles and fusions with other genres, represents the evolving nature of jazz music. In identifying jazz music, several key elements stand out. The rhythmic style, particularly the swing feel, is a defining characteristic. Singers need to develop their rhythmic sense and feel the groove to deliver jazz convincingly. Additionally, jazz singers must master the art of putting lyrics in rhythm to sound conversational, especially in swing. Another indication of jazz interpretation is when the performer adds improvisation to the melody, showcasing their creativity and spontaneity. In jazz, singers alter notes and melodies to match the lyrics' subtext, using vocal phrasing and melodic variations to convey storytelling and emotions. This improvisational approach allows for unique expressions and deeper connections with the song's meaning. In jazz, ghost notes and articulation add depth and complexity to the music. Ghost notes are subtle, muted tones that enhance the groove, while articulation techniques bring out emotion, expressiveness and individuality in performances. Learning jazz piano benefits jazz singers by deepening their musicianship, improving improvisation, and enhancing timing and phrasing. This knowledge enables more expressive performances and better collaboration with accompanists. Overall, it makes jazz singers more versatile and engaging performers. Scatting is a more organic vocal improvisation technique using nonsensical syllables. A teacher helps by introducing scat patterns, practising rhythm and pitch and helping the singer make up their own rhythms. BEST MOMENTS ‘No two jazz singers are alike' ‘Jazz comes in different packages, it's not always about a well trained voice' ‘Phrasing is a bigger deal in jazz than it is in other styles' ‘I want to be leader of the band so I need to talk to them in the musical language they understand' EPISODE RESOURCES Website: Michele Weir: https://www.micheleweir.com Music Habit: https://www.musichabit.com Relevant Links & Mentions: Artists mentioned: Joni Mitchell; Louis Armstrong; Benny Goodman; Count Basie; Charlie Parker; Dizzy Gillespie; Miles Davis; Ella Fitzgerald; Nat King Cole; Sarah Vaughan; Carmen McRae; Nancy Wilson; Mel Tormé; Gretchen Parlato; Bob Dylan ScatAbility App: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/scatability/id966549564 The work of Judy Niemack: http://www.judyniemack.com/ The work of Bob Stoloff: https://www.bobstoloffmusic.com/ Darmon Meader: https://darmonmeader.com/ New York Voices: https://newyorkvoices.com/ Jazz Voice: https://www.jazzvoice.com/ ABOUT THE GUEST Michele Weir is widely distinguished for her work in vocal jazz education and arranging.

Synopsis In James Joyce's novel “Ulysses,” the thoughts of its major characters keep shifting from the sights and sounds they encounter in and around Dublin to their private, non-stop interior monologues. This narrative technique came to be called “stream of consciousness” writing. In music, something similar occurred on today's date in 1968, when the Italian composer Luciano Berio conducted the Swingle Singers and the New York Philharmonic in the premiere performance of his new work entitled “Sinfonia.” “Sinfonia” included music quotes from Bach to Mahler intermingled with sung and spoken texts ranging from Claude Levi-Strauss to Samuel Beckett. There's even a bit of Joyce's “Ulysses” tossed in as well, alongside slogans from the student protests of 1968. The text of Sinfonia's second movement was a tribute to the recently-assassinated Civil Rights leader, Martin Luther King – and consisted of nothing but the intoned syllables of his name. “Sinfonia” was Berio's “stream of consciousness” interior monologue on the year 1968 made public with great theatrical flair: a dizzying mix of poignant music and political text. Berio was quoted as saying, “The juxtaposition of contrasting elements, in fact, is part of the whole point.” Somewhat to everyone's surprise, “Sinfonia” turned out to be a hit, and Columbia Records even released a recording of the work with its premiere performers. Synopsis Two or three days after his death on July 28, 1750, the final rites were held in Leipzig, in St. John's Church, for Johann Sebastian Bach, considered by many the greatest composer who ever lived. Bach was buried in the churchyard of St. John's. In 1894, his remains were discovered during excavations and were reburied inside. Although not unappreciated in his lifetime, and not completely forgotten for nearly a century as myth would have it (Mozart and Beethoven both revered him), it's true that Bach's real stature was not fully recognized by the wider public until Felix Mendelssohn's famous revival performance of Bach's “St. Matthew Passion” in Berlin in 1829. And since Mendelssohn's 19th century revival, Bach's Passion settings and cantatas have been staged as operas or ballets in the 20th and 21st. His music has survived arrangements for solo piano, full symphony orchestra, Moog synthesizer, authentic “period” instruments, Japanese koto orchestra, shakuhachi flute, and the various jazz stylings of the Swingle Singers and the late pianist of the Modern Jazz Quartet, John Lewis. However it was adapted or altered by the passing fashion or fads of the day, Bach's music continues to touch whoever plays it or listens to it. Music Played in Today's Program J. S. Bach (1685-1750) – St. Matthew Passion (SW German Madrigal Chorus; Wolfgang Gönnenwein, cond.) EMI Classics 79544 J. S. Bach (1685-1750) (arr. Chris Brubeck) – Variations on Themes by Bach (Joel Brown, guitar; London Symphony; Joel Revzen, cond.) Koch International 7485

Pat Metheny gets up close and personal with Richard Niles - Video PART 2 A RADIO RICHARD SPECIAL PRESENTATION In this 2nd part of my BBC Radio 2 series “Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life” recorded in 2007, Pat explains his concepts, philosophies and practices. This is invaluable to students, teachers and music lovers, and will enrich the soul of anyone who cares about art and creativity. Having known Pat since 1974, I posed some deliberately provocative questions, designed to get to the heart of his artistry. As I wrote in my book, “The Pat Metheny Interviews”, “I asked questions beyond music because I know that underneath all that charisma, theoretical knowledge and dynamic talent there is the intense philosophical mindset that created it. Pat Metheny is more than just a bunch of cool notes that are fun to listen to. Is radio important? Tony Currie thinks so. This golden voiced Scottish radio legend started broadcasting in 1972 at KPFK in Los Angeles started Radio Clyde, Scotland's first independent local radio station, became an announcer on Scottish Television, became Controller of Programmes for the Cable Authority, and the ITC, Director for BBC Scotland's television channels BBC ONE Scotland and BBC TWO Scotland, chairing both the Royal Television Society Scotland and the Radio Academy in Scotland. He has written for countless newspapers and magazines and has many published books. He created Radio Six International which syndicates its programming to 56 radio stations around the world. We became friends when I was a BBC broadcaster in the 1990s and in this interview we waffle on about the history of radio, what broadcasting is and why it is important. Een droog tikje en dan gaan ze er als een speer vandoor; The Swingle Singers in Bach. Notabene de bloedserieuze Kunst der Fuge, vermaken zij tot een feestelijke mengeling van Kunst en Kitsch.
Anyone else get as excited as I do when you hear choral music in mainstream media? When Coldplay released their 2019 album Everyday Life, I was captivated by the song "When I Need a Friend." Fast forward several months and I was lucky enough to sit down with Ben Parry, conductor of that track sung by London Voices. Ben is a conductor, composer, arranger, singer and producer. Former member of the Swingle Singers (his daughter now sings with the ensemble) and collaborator with hundreds of choral and "light music" projects, Ben is a world-renown musician who continues to make music for a variety of different age groups and experiences in a variety of different styles. In addition to his work with London Voices, Ben is the Assistant Director of Music and Bye-Fellow of King's College, Cambridge, and the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. He has made well over 100 CD recordings and his compositions and arrangements are published by Oxford University Press, Peters Edition and Faber Music. His latest album: The Hours just released and is available to listen here. #MorePeopleSinging Choir Baton Host: Beth Philemon | Choir Baton Podcast Producer: Maggie Hemedinger For more information on Choir Baton please visit choirbaton.com and to follow us on Instagram @choirbaton @bethphilemon Music by: Scott Holmes To join the Choir Baton Teaching Membership or for more information, go here. - Gregory Porter flutti lag sitt Hey, Laura. - Viðamikilli samkeppni um útilistaverk í nýju hverfi Reykjavíkur, Vogabyggð, hefur verið hrundið af stað. Verja á 140 milljónum króna til kaupa á einu eða fleiri verkum sem sett verða upp í hverfinu. Þetta er líklega viðamesta samkeppni sinnar tegundar hér á landi. Ólöf Kristín Sigurðardóttir, safnstjóri Listasafns Reykjavíkur, sagði frá samkeppninni og stöðu útilistar. - Morgunvaktinni lauk á því að The Modern Jazz Quartet og The Swingle Singers fluttu Aríu á G streng eftir Jóhann Sebastian Bach.
