Happy New Year! We hope 2025 is the best year yet for you guys. In today's episode, Alex Comstock and Jeremy Lopez are joined by Troy Pottenger of Whitetail Addictions. Troy is easily one of the best bowhunters we know. He's consistently putting mature mountain bucks on the ground, year after year. Troy takes us through his upbringing on a ranch in North Idaho, where his experiences in the mountains shaped his approach to bowhunting. Through this, his hunting path shifted at a young age when he migrated from mule deer and elk to chasing giant whitetails. Troy dives into the "hay days" of hunting and what it was like back in his early stages of bowhunting. He goes into how to navigate the vast, rugged terrain of big woods mountain country in pursuit of mature bucks. Despite a busy schedule, Troy reveals his strategies for making the most of limited time while working his 9-5 job and running a business. Troy breaks down why social hubs are consistent hotspots for daylight buck activity and the art of managing moisture while hiking to your stand (sometimes 3+ miles in). He also shares an epic story of running down a pack of wolves to save his season-proof of the apex predator he is. Lastly, Troy breaks down his secret formula for successful scrapes. This is a great episode full of next-level tactics and firsthand experience. Troy's stories and expertise will inspire you to get out there and chase your next target buck. Enjoy the show! In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, we connect with Troy Pottenger, an absolute killer when it comes to whitetail deer. Troy shares his experiences hunting the mountains of Idaho, where winters are harsh and there's tons of wild game around. While the topography and terrain might be different where we primarily hunt, the addiction to chasing mature bucks remains the same. The passion and pursuit of mature whitetails is something that constantly burns within us, always trying to achieve the goal of harvesting such an animal. It's not an easy task to accomplish with the amount of work involved. Truly putting your woodsmanship skills to the test reading sign, scouting, gathering intel, and ultimately putting yourself in the mind of a mature buck. There's so much that goes into it, and that's what we discuss on the show with Troy. Today on the podcast I'm joined by my buddy Troy Pottenger. As a reminder, Troy is hunting some of the hardest to kill whitetails in the mountains of Idaho. He's not the only predator in the mountains, where deer are more often hunting by mountain lions, wolves and Grizzly. Few mistakes can be made, and Troy has to really be dialed in. What's more, he usually is hunting a specific buck. Hard enough to accomplish in the best of circumstances. For Troy, shed hunting isn't just something to do to pass the time during winter and spring. It's a key puzzle piece to determine when and where he may kill his next wall hanger. Today on the podcast I'm joined by my buddy Troy Pottenger. I'm sure many of you are aware of Troy and his ability to chase down the oldest and biggest mountain bucks. The incredible part of his success is he's doing it in Idaho, a place not known for whitetails, and is competing against North America's apex predators for the same deer. Community scrapes, along with bedding, is a go-to-strategy he uses. But a community scrape isn't always in a place that's huntable based on access or wind. So Troy has created an approach to building not just mock scrapes, but mock community scrapes....and well...the results speak for themself. Hope you dig the episode and thanks for listening! Troy Pottenger is an all time listener favorite! This week we have him back on the show to dive into a deeper understanding of mature bucks, to learn how we can really be in the game on tagging mature bucks all season long, not just in the rut. Topics include locating a core area and keeping up with it as it shifts throughout the fall, finding those dynamite spots that you can rely on every single year, being versatile so if one of your trusted spots goes cold you can quickly adapt and stay in the game, keeping up with doe family groups, using a barrier (or backwall, as we discussed last week with PK) for both access and setups, wind and thermals, home ranges and a ton more.
