About 4,500 people are released from Minnesota prisons each year. Many of them have spent years, if not decades, behind bars, separated from friends, family and community. What happens when they finally return? How do they rebuild their lives during this complex and often precarious transition? That was the topic at a collaborative Sahan Community Live and North Star Journey Live event recorded on April 24 at the St. Paul Neighborhood Network. Co-hosted by MPR News senior editor Brandt Williams and Sahan Journal digital producer Alberto Villafan, formerly incarcerated Minnesotans shared first-hand stories of what makes reentry such a difficult process. Community leaders and reentry advocates also shared what helps and what holds back people as they exit incarceration and reintegrate into their community.Guests: Antonio Williams is the founder and executive director of T.O.N.E. U.P., a grassroots organization dedicated to empowering formerly incarcerated individuals.Rea Smith is the Women's Services Project Coordinator of the Behavioral Health Division at the Minnesota Department of Human Services.Erick Washington is the co-founder of the Kingsmen Project.James Becker is the assistant federal defender and federal defender representative in the District of Minnesota Reentry Court program.David Riley is an addictions counselor at RS Eden, a Minneapolis-based organization that offers treatment for drug addictions, housing assistance and reentry support.

Washington State athletic director Anne McCoy joined Jason “Puck” Puckett to discuss the whirlwind that has been Washington State football in the last month. They discussed the Jake Dickert departure and whether or not Dickert and his representatives could have handled the situation better. What happened to the roughly $2 million dollars that the Board of Regents earmarked for athletics and why did President Kirk Schulz not inform McCoy that they had the money for football and didn't find out for nearly 6 weeks after which Dickert took the job at Wake Forest?Anne talks about her current relationship with Schulz and the board of regents, are they truly on the same page and can communication be better between upper campus and athletics? When did Jimmy Rogers land on her radar and what made Jimmy Rogers the right choice for WSU? Was Rogers the only candidate offered the job? How serious of candidates were Brent Vigen at Montana State and UCONN's Jim Mora? McCoy talks about the correlation between Rogers and basketball coach David Riley. Two young coaches who have had immense success at the lower level, but they also are significantly underpaid compared to their predecessors. How much did financials play a part in the hiring of Rogers?McCoy says the football assistant pool will stay at $4.5 million. There were reports that it was going to be cut to $3.5 million. Have contract talks started with basketball coach David Riley and will there be beer sales at Martin Stadium next season? Lastly, is the Pac-12 closer to finding an eighth football school?

This weeks Cougs Corner with Jason “Puck” Puckett welcomes WSU basketball coach David Riley, who is preparing for his first season as the new Cougars head coach. Riley and Puck chat about the upcoming game on November 21 in Spokane featuring the Cougs and Eastern Washington. Proceeds of the gate will go and support the Cougar Collective. What will Cougar fans expect from this years team, in which it will look vastly different from a year ago under Kyle Smith. One thing you will notice right away is a more up tempo offense that has a very European feel to it. Riley goes through all the new players on the team and gives Puck a scouting report on each one. They also get into the changing landscape of college athletics and that its geared more towards a younger coach, but the demands of a coach and his staff are vey different and it's something that Riley hopes the NCAA can regulate in the future.

I had the pleasure of being hosted by David Riley in his home, surrounded by the impressive Michigan bucks he's harvested over the years. We kicked off the conversation by discussing the significance of taxidermy and the stories behind each mount. David shared heartfelt anecdotes, including the emotional journey of hunting after his accident, emphasizing that the experience and memories often outweigh the size of the rack. As we transitioned into the main topic, David provided insights into his current preparations for the upcoming hunting season. He talked about his meticulous process of locating targets, shooting practice, and packing for his first out-of-state hunt in September. David's approach to hunting is deeply rooted in the experience and the process, rather than just the end goal of filling a tag. We delved into the importance of out-of-state hunts and how they can be a learning experience. David encouraged hunters to take the plunge and go for it, even if it means starting with smaller, less popular states before tackling the big ones like Iowa or Kansas. He shared his own experiences of hunting in various states and how each trip has contributed to his growth as a hunter. David also provided a detailed breakdown of his strategy for an early September opener. He emphasized the importance of glassing for two evenings and one morning before the season starts, to locate and pattern the deer. His plan involves a mix of light scouting, glassing, and being mobile to adapt to the conditions and deer movements. Throughout the episode, David's passion for hunting and his methodical approach to the sport were evident. He stressed the value of the process, the lessons learned from each hunt, and the importance of doing things your way. Whether you're a seasoned hunter or new to the game, there's a wealth of knowledge to be gained from David's experiences and insights. RUNDOWN Is 15-year-old Korn Ferry golfer Miles Russell comparable to Tiger Woods' son Charlie? How do we move from Brian Adams' music career to NFL draft week? "Everything we do, we do it for you." David Riley, newly appointed Washington State University's 20th head basketball coach, joins Mitch to discuss his new leadership role. Sam Weinman, the digital editorial director and author of Golf Digest, finally had his name drawn in the media lottery at The Masters after nearly 15 years of entries, allowing him the rare chance to play Augusta National. Overwhelmed by the support from colleagues and friends, he faced the challenge of not having his own clubs and borrowing a set. In the Other Stuff Segment, Hotshot Scott and Mitch discuss serious topics, such as the incident where the Jaguars general manager allegedly passed gas during a news conference. Of course, you can't talk about sports without mentioning Caitlin Clark, Jim Harbaugh, Blake Griffin, Dickie Betts and more! Why does this keep happening at the beginning of every season? In case you missed it, Puck had John Canzano on the show yesterday and John dropped a report that Washington president Ana Marie Cauce will announce in the next six months that she will step down as president. Cauce played a major role in the collapse of the Pac-12. Puck asks Husky fans how should she be remembered?Puck also reacts to the hiring of David Riley, new mens basketball coach at WSU.
