At this stage in my life there are more passings and obituaries than weddings, births of children, or anniversaries in the memos we get about the class news and reunions.  Recently we received a message about June.  Even though I was not a close friend of hers I knew her, and I was very much moved by the tributes that came in and the story that was told. I knew Bill had died in the Vietnam war.  And of course during that conflict we all had friends or knew of people that had suffered badly and even died in the conflict. But I didn't know the Bill story, and now I know more of it, but what moved me even more is the story of the life that you can put together after a terrible tragedy. Truly a story of a woman who took tragedy and transformed iit nto many victories.  Blessings on her family and her memory. Thanks Stan

Vic Verchereau welcomes Nikki Thompson Frazier, who is the Founder and CEO of Sweet Encounter Bakery & Cafe. Nikki Thompson Frazier remembers as a little girl, she dreamed of owning a restaurant. Her mom always said she loved playing with the pots and pans more than her toys. Her two little girls, Melia and Madison, are no different. They love helping mommy in the kitchen. They enjoy creating great food as much as they enjoy eating it. However, not all foods like them as much as they like some foods. Both of her daughters were diagnosed with food allergies! She didn't want her kids to never enjoy a cupcake! She said "After my little pity party, I dusted myself off and decided to figure out how to best feed my kids. It also helped that a few of my girlfriends reminded me that God gave me a gift – the ability to make delicious food". In the fall, Nikki launched a new business endeavor, Sweet Encounter Kids Culinary Academy, a monthly subscription box cooking club for kids. She has won over $22,000 in prize money through her participation in business pitch competitions. She has also won awards for her baking skills ranging from 1st Place Judges Choice to 1st Place People's Choice at area baking competitions. One of her proudest accomplishments is competing on Food Network's Bakers vs. Fakers. With many blessings, hard work and some really cool good fortune, Sweet Encounter Bakery & Cafe is open for business! This is a great story of what determination can do for hardworking dreamers! This week, we're taking a look back at Elvis's March 1975 recording sessions that produced the heavily country-tinged album "Today" - his very last session in a proper recording studio. Can Gurdip overcome his longstanding beef with country music to give the material a fair shake or is that just a great big "Fairytale"? Do producer Felton Jarvis' heavy overdubs work or do they lead to "T-R-O-U-B-L-E"?  For Song of the Week, Justin sticks with the country theme, picking Elvis's 1976 Jungle Room version of "Love Coming Down," originally by George Jones, while Gurdip muses over the lightweight "One Boy, Two Little Girls" from 1964's "Kissin' Cousins." Over the course of a career first responders will deal with thousands of critical incidents. These can be difficult, challenging and at times emotionally draining. These can be everything from family fights to fatal traffic accidents to even murder. But there are those calls that just stand out and are forever lodged in your memories of the men and women who have to deal with them. This is especially true when these calls involve innocent children who are the victims of violent crime. On September 16, 2009, in the city of Westminster at about 6:30 in the morning Kristin Kannard was working a dispatcher and Cameron Knauerhaze was working patrol when a horrific call came in. A woman had just stabbed her two little girls. What happened was a life changing even for both of them.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States today. “We know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think, and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.” Our guest, Lisa Jacovsky, is a PhD candidate who specializes in autism.
