Justin Torone is a curiosities collector & the co-owner of Rest In Pieces oddity shop in Richmond, Virginia. After a reading about the historical significance of cabinets of curiosity, Justin begins with lore from the cemetery across the street for his shop. Then we get deep into methods for preserving animal bones: dermestid beetles; articulation; degreasing, maceration, boiling, & later, wet specimens. We find out who the shop's audience is and how they acquire their vintage taxidermy & specimens. From there we leave the animal kingdom & turn to the human as Justin describes the most audacious highlights from his collection: folk art mourning mummies; an "overmodelled" skull; & a medically bisected fetus. All of which begs the question of legality, further illustrated by a university's illegal skeleton auction & a much more nefarious oddities black market. To bring this macabre feast to an end, Justin tells the story of how be become acquainted with a paranormal con-woman who asked him to jeopardize his morals. There are few artists who are capable of rendering an image that channels both the weight of heavy metal and the beauty of religious mysticism and nature. If there were one to be defined by this gift, it would be David D'Andrea. Alongside fellow artists Brian Mercer, Santos, and Arik Roper, he has helped define the iconography of Sleep and OM through his studio, Samaritan Press, and also lent his talents to countless other bands, including Dinosaur Jr., The Jesus Lizard, Arthur Brown, Queens of the Stone Age, Windhand, and Triptykon. In this chapter, David speaks about his early days in punk and skate zine culture and his artistic process from pen and ink to digital and print, as well as knowing exactly what works for a band stylistically, Vedanta symbols, 80's photocopiers, the difficulty of fonts, navigating festival commissions, and his third-entity creation with Jondix: The Astral Mind. You can find David's work at his website, Samaritan Press. *Note: There is some unfortunate static through most of the first 30 or so minutes. Apologies for that!

Working Class Audio #173 with Jack Endino!!! JACK ENDINO is a Seattle-based record producer, engineer, and musician who has made over 500 records in his 30-year career. Jack helped create what became known as "the Seattle Sound" of the early nineties, having recorded or mixed 44 out of the first 100 releases on the legendary Sub Pop record label, including debut records by Nirvana ("Bleach"), Soundgarden ("Screaming Life") and Mudhoney ("Superfuzz Bigmuff"). Some of his international clients include Brazil's Titas (5 albums from 1993 to 2005) and Grammy winner Nando Reis (4 albums), Mexico's Guillotina (3 albums), Ireland's Therapy?, Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson (UK), and The Ganjas and Yajaira from Chile. Recent clients include Zeke, Windhand, and High On Fire. Jack still maintains his workaholic pace, having produced records in 14 countries and continuing to play in bands as guitarist, bassist and vocalist. Journalists have called him "Chief Architect of the Seattle Sound" and "Godfather of Grunge" but Jack says "I'm just a guy who likes to make rock records." He currently manages a recording studio in Seattle called Soundhouse. About this Interview: Jack joins me to talk about baking tapes, audio formats, operating with a low overhead, forensic re-mixing, producer malpractice and his life of recording, mixing, mastering and playing in 4 bands. We made it to 10! Thanks to everyone for still listening! This week we talk to Will about the front end on his Triumph chopper and give him some advice on how to make his life easier. Danger Dan joins us and sparks a conversation about ignition timing. Song of the week: Windhand; Old Evil.
