Earth Week 2025 came with a positive development for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) on efforts to implement a pilot program for analyzing wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) and learn ways to design safer crossings.Amanda Novak, a resource specialist in MDOT's Bay Region, returns to the podcast to talk about a recently awarded $476,000 federal grant and how it will be put toward the pilot program. She previously spoke about the grant on the podcast in September 2024.While we think of white-tailed deer most commonly when it comes to WVCs, other species to be considered include elk, moose, black bear, wild turkey, pine marten, eastern massasauga rattlesnake and Blanding's turtle. As laid out in the project abstract for the grant, the number of WVCs in Michigan continues to increase annually, worsening risks and costs to drivers. For example, white-tailed deer alone account for more than 55,000 WVCs and cost motorists an average of $130 million per year in Michigan. Additionally, WVCs are a major threat to many wildlife populations in the state, including documented impacts on several threatened and endangered species. Projected increases in tourism, housing development and climate change effects are likely to exacerbate WVC effects on motorists and wildlife in Michigan.

In this interview from WVC 2025, Peter Kenseth speaks with Bud Hanson from Freshpet about their approach to veterinary education. As the pioneer in refrigerated fresh pet food, Freshpet focuses on helping veterinarians understand that their products are fully cooked, not raw, addressing safety concerns around Avian flu and other pathogens.Bud explains that Freshpet is now fed in approximately 13 million households, meaning roughly 1 in 5 canine patients that veterinarians see are already eating their products. The company emphasizes the nutritional benefits of their gently cooked approach, including higher amino acid availability compared to both kibble and raw diets. The interview highlights how some veterinarians are recommending Freshpet as an alternative to home cooking, offering clients who want fresh food a complete and balanced option that's consistent batch to batch. With specialized formulations like Healthy Aging for senior dogs and solutions for sensitive stomachs, Freshpet continues to innovate after nearly 20 years in the market. This conversation explores the growing trend of fresh pet nutrition and the importance of bridging the gap between veterinary recommendations and consumer preferences.
In this exclusive Petworking interview from WVC 2025, I had a chance to chat with Kevin DeWalt, President of @CASCO Pet, to explore one of the most exciting innovations transforming veterinary care! One of the biggest themes I noticed at this year's conference was the complete reimagining of traditional veterinary spaces - moving away from clinical, institutional environments toward designs that prioritize comfort and aesthetics for both pets and their parents.CASCO's WELLKennels perfectly embody this shift. These revolutionary kennels replace cold stainless steel cages with thoughtfully designed units featuring:- Sound-dampening materials that reduce stress for all animals in the clinic- Smart lighting with three modes (Daylight, Recovery, Cleaning)- Integrated heating elements for patient comfort- Enhanced biosecurity features- Flexible configurations for different patient sizes and needs- Power outlets for medical equipment right at the point of care- Optional oxygen delivery systemsIn our conversation, Kevin explains how these innovations not only make the veterinary experience less stressful for pets but also improve workflow for staff and create a more appealing environment for pet parents. We also discuss exciting applications beyond vet clinics, including shelters and mobile transport units!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Petworking for more exclusive interviews with the innovators transforming pet care! What features would you want to see in your vet's clinic? In this radio show, I discuss my recent LinkedIn post that got a lot of traction. #veterinarymedicine - I want to see more private practice ownership and extremely bullish on folksbuilding this future in a variety of ways._________________ is stopping veterinarians from wanting to own their own clinic? What's your answer? It's a hot topic - I've pounded the table on the topic since 2019 - it's not easy, it's not rainbows and butterflies - but darn, it's worth it, and the amount of $ in the space more can go to veterinarians if there is a thriving private practice environment.I'll have some guests on the show later via a roundtable discussion - that being said I wanted to discuss it on a radio show as I just got back from WVC, and I can tell you I'm extremelyoptimistic about private practice ownership and the models, offerings, and people doing cool stuff here. This week on the Uncharted Podcast, Dr. Andy Roark is joined by veterinary practice management expert, Dr. Amanda Donnelly and together they tackle another question from the mailbag. In this episode, they take on the challenge of a veterinarian who, despite being exceptional with clients and production, struggles with efficiency in exam rooms, causing a backlog of duties. This backlog bleeds into other doctor's plates, having to have them finish his work yet the practice owner is hesitant to discipline for fear of losing this veterinarian. Dr. Amanda Donnelly offers her insight to strategize ways to set clearer job expectations, foster self-reflection, and provide effective feedback. Together, they explore external resources like mentorship programs and leadership coaching to enhance the vet's performance. Let's get into this episode....

She has been a clinical instructor for three programs and is an active member of the ARDMS, SDMS, and AIUM. She has served on the ARDMS board writing panels, and is a published author of several educational courses through the SDMS. With her goal to get back into the veterinary field, Michelle began working with Antech Sound Imaging as a Clinical Education Specialist II, training veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and veterinary radiologists about ultrasound. She has taught in private and corporate veterinary hospitals, as well as at symposiums, conferences and private education events. Michelle has been a recognized speaker at veterinary conferences including VMX and WVC. During her time at Antech Sound Imaging she realized a need for professionals performing veterinary ultrasounds in the field. She then co-founded Focused Ultrasound Resources (FUR) to address the community's needs. Earlier this summer, Wabash Valley College lost a member of its fishing family and 2023 recruiting class as high school angler Eli Newberry passed away in a car accident. Eli was set to be a high school senior this fall and had already signed to attend WVC and be a member of the bass fishing team starting the fall of 2023. The local community and the college fishing scene quickly rallied together to organize a memorial tournament to benefit the family. The Eli Newberry Memorial Tournament was contested on August 13th and raised a total of $10,000. Listen in to the latest episode of the Rapala #WeAreCollegiateBass Podcast as we talk with WVC Head Coach Todd Gill, and team members Hunter Capehart, Mason Gross, and Carter Smith to remember Eli and discuss the memorial tournament.

In this VETgirl online veterinary CE podcast, we interview Dr. Natalie Marks, DVM, CVJ on the state of feline medicalization (only 36% of cats ever see a veterinarian, compared to 79% of dogs), and how veterinary practices can improve feline patient visits and keep cats coming back year after year. We'll cover the reasons for poor patient retention post-kittenhood, and learn how to capitalize on those all-important kitten visits. We'll explore how to implement easy cat-friendly protocols in any practice and improve communication with cat owners to help them value wellness exams and preventive care (vaccines, routine diagnostics, and preventive care) for both indoor and outdoor cats. Dr. Marks has been training practices for several years in this area of expertise, and has presented at AAFP, WVC, and numerous other conferences on this topic.

Good Morning it's Tuesday August 10th and this is Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Today - Last week, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation filed a lawsuit against the United States for damages from the North Star and Tunk Block fires. Before we jump in, we're excited to let you know that Wenatchee Wine & Food Fest is back this year on August 28th at the Town Toyota Center! Ticket holders will get a chance to sample small pours of amazing local wines, local ciders and beers… and of course, enjoy tasty bites from area restaurants and caterers. Make sure to get tickets in advance! We'll see you there! Now our feature story… The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the United States for damages from the North Star and Tunk Block fires. The fires burned more than 240,000 acres on the Colville Reservation in 2015. Now, the Colvilles allege that the U.S. failed to fulfill legally required duties before and after the fires. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. It also alleges that the U.S. failed to provide adequate firefighting resources for the Colville Reservation by prioritizing off-reservation, non-trust property. The North Star and Tunk Block fires began back in August 2015 and burned more than 590 square miles and 800 million board feet of the Tribes' commercial timber. It all happened over a two-month period. The lost timber was 20% of the commercial timber on the Colville Reservation and is the largest fire-related timber loss on any Indian reservation in recorded history. Colville Business Council Chairman Andrew Joseph Jr. said the fires also caused long term damage to cultural resources on the Reservation. He explained that tribal members hunt, fish and gather food and medicine throughout the Colville Reservation, and in many areas the fires burned so hot that they sterilized the soil and created a moonscape. Joseph noted that it will take decades for our resources to completely recover in those areas. He also added the United States' insufficient preparation for and response to the 2015 fires have not been addressed and that the Colville Tribes remain gravely concerned about future wildfires on the reservation. The Colville Reservation is currently dealing with the impacts of two active fires. One of them - the Chuweah Creek Fire - is 92% contained. But it destroyed five homes and burned 36,752 acres. The other - called the Summit Trail Fire is 18% contained and burned 28,036 acres. It's threatening 236 homes and other structures. Joseph says he hopes this lawsuit will result in the Department of the Interior finally living up to its trust responsibilities to the Colville Tribes To stay up to date on this story visit us at wenatcheeworld.com Before we continue, a special thanks to our friends and sponsors at Confluence Health. Fall classes begin on Sept. 27. And students are expected to be fully vaccinated prior to the first day of school. They'll also need to document their vaccination status by that date using WVC's free online tool. Laura McDowell, director of communications, Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges says that the majority of community colleges in the state are now also requiring students to be vaccinated. In fact, she said that 27 of the 34 state's community and technical colleges have decided to require vaccination as a condition of coming to work and learn on campus. Still, waivers are available for medical, religious or philosophical reasons. The decision was made in light of the governor's higher education proclamation last month, and in response to new information surrounding the COVID-19 delta variant. WVC spokeswoman Libby Siebens said that staff are not currently required to be vaccinated, however, they must attest to their vaccination status. For now, it's hard to say what the vaccination requirement will do to college enrollment. Some people will feel reassured about going back to school because there are vaccination requirements, while other people may view that as a hurdle they have to go through, but one they are not ready for. And it turns out that college age students are one of least vaccinated populations statewide. So will the vaccination requirement to attend college push more of this population to get vaccinated? Finally, Children of various ages will be taking to the stage floor for the 43rd annual Short Shakespearean's production of “As You Like It” this weekend at the Riverside Playhouse. Short Shakespeareans is a children's theater program with a cast aged 16 and below. And this year's show includes 35 young actors. Cast members have been “amping up their excitement everyday,” according to Mark Belton… he's the show producer. And this year's show is being directed by Kelly Atwood. If you've never been - the plays are put on by volunteers with children and parents helping out. It is a fun time for everybody. And the set has just been painted in preparation for Wednesday's opening night. So what can you expect from “As You Like It?” Well, the comedy tells the story of two couples who fall in love while being caught between the court and the forest. And of course, cast members will then add their own fun to it. Tickets for the performance are $15 each, and are available at numericapac.org. “As You Like It” has daily performances at 7 p.m. Aug. 11-14, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Aug. 14. See you there! Before we go, some local history, Wenatchee Valley History, is brought to you by NABUR. Member SIPC and FINRA. -- Now our feature story… It might have the shortest parade in recent Apple Blossom history with around 92 mostly local entries, but no one seemed to care. After more than a year of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, people were just happy to be outside with good weather enjoying a parade. There was no 2020 Apple Blossom parade so this 2021 Stemilt and Keyes Fibre Community Parade was a welcome sight indeed. Community members lined the route along Orondo Avenue. Because there was no parade in 2020, the 2020 Apple Blossom royalty was included in the parade this year. 2020 Apple Blossom Queen Tess Sparks said that she's excited they've been able to be included in the parade. Sparks just finished her first year at CWU, where she played soccer. The 2021 Apple Blossom Queen Brooke Perez said she loves including the 2020 royalty in this year's parade. She noted that it was great to share the experience with Queen Tess. For many of the parade participants, this is their first parade of the year. Wenatchee Mayor Frank Kuntz said it actually might be one of the first festivals in the Northwest. But he also said it was a close call to make this year's festival happen. Credit to Darci Christoferson and the board of the Apple Blossom Festival. And of course the Health District that gave approval. One of the annual participants is the Leavenworth Float, which this year featured the familiar Gustav onion dome and Alpenhorn players. Scott Bradshaw, the 2019 Royal Bavarian Kanzler, said this is their first parade and they are excited about it. Bradshaw said they're hoping to go to five or six parades this year. Nita Paine and Arlene Jones were also a part of the parade - they represented the 2020 Grand Marshals from the Music Theater of Wenatchee. Riding behind them was the cast of the new show, "MaMa Mia," directed by Paul and Kelly Atwood. The Spokane Lilac Festival was also well represented at the Apple Blossom Festival. It was their first parade of the year. Dan Verheul, the 2021-22 president of the Lilac Festival, said it has been a challenging year. The Lilac Festival is a scholarship program, so they were still able to have a court last year and scholarships, but they were not able to get out into the community to do the things they wanted to do. Still, they are excited about this year. They'll have about six parades this year. Verheul said they're looking forward to each and every one of them. This is the first time this float has been out. It's been in the making for two year since they've been doing nothing but working. Lilac Festival Queen Julia said she is happy to get out too. This is their first parade so it is the trail run for it all but Queen Julia and the court were thrilled to be out. Finally, we spoke to Charlotte Allen who has been in Wenatchee for 41 years and never missed a parade until last year. Or rather, the parade missed her. Allen thought the parade was good, though not as good as some years. Learn more by visiting them at ConfluenceHealth.com - Next Wenatchee Valley College's Chamber Singers get their first opportunity in more than a year to sing for a crowd Sunday in a free concert at Cave B Estate Winery. The group formed just 10 weeks ago when pandemic restrictions were lifted to allow the class to meet in person. Normally they would have 30 weeks of training and performance experience, but they've made the most of their time together, according to WVC music faculty and choir director Juel Iwaasa. The choir formed with five students, who had been working online with Rhia Foster, a vocal jazz artist.. Then, when the switch to in-person was allowed, Iwaasa and Foster swapped classes, giving him the opportunity to direct the singers. Three more singers joined the group and WVC piano faculty Ken Hunnicutt returned as the choir accompanist. But some challenges remained. Singing with masks turned out to be quite difficult. Masks significantly decreased everyone's volume and robbed the choir of a resonant tone and nuance in dynamics. No one could take a full breath with a mask on either. They eventually spaced themselves out around the edges of the recital hall to meet the 15 feet of separation required to sing without masks. Their practice schedules also were hindered by ongoing COVID-19 concerns. They kept at it, though. With just the spring term left in the school year, they were learning a new music selection every week to prepare for what they hoped would be a chance to sing in concert at least once. In a normal year, they would perform three times each term, so in addition to missing out on 20 weeks of practice, they didn't get the chance to experience performing before a crowd. But Cave B was their first performance of the term. The opportunity to perform at the winery's outdoor venue was an unexpected bonus, he said. It turns out one of the members of Chamber Singers is a grandchild to the owners of Cave B Winery ... . And partway through the term, they graciously offered to host our performance at Stage B. So what can we expect from the WVC in the future? Well, the WVC music department is also working on introducing a Mariachi program - anticipated to start in the fall 2022. They have always included some Mariachi or Latinx music staples in their repertoire. - Here's what else you need to know today… Governor Jay Inslee recently announced incentives that are available to Washington state residents who have received the Covid-19 vaccine. He noted that they're making the investment to hopefully save more lives. A few years later, in 1895 the first Entiat Post Office was established. The Entiat Power Plant opened for business in 1908. The Keystone Fruit Company opened for business in the valley in 1910, and railroad service began in Entiat in 1914. But in 1915 a second fire threatened the "first" town of Entiat and only six businesses survived. Nevertheless Entiat was officially incorporated on April 25, 1944. - Thanks for listening. Good Morning it's Saturday May 15th, and this is The Wenatchee World's newest podcast, Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Today - Governor Jay Inslee has recently announced that counties will either move up or remain in Phase 3 until the economy fully reopens on June 30th. This episode is brought to you by Equilus Group Incorporated. Equilus Group, Inc is a Registered Investment Advisory Firm in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Equilus Group, Inc- Building Your Financial Success. Learn more at Equilusfinancial.com. Member SIPC and FINRA. - Now our feature story... On Thursday, Gov. Jay Inslee announced that counties will either move up or remain in Phase 3 until the economy fully reopens on June 30th. Then, on the 30th indoor capacity will increase from 50% to 100% for almost all businesses and public places. This includes restaurants, movie theaters, bowling alleys, and more. Inslee noted that the statewide COVID plateau that postponed the "Healthy Washington" county evaluations earlier this month has proven to be a decline. And a full reopening will happen even sooner if the state reaches a 70% threshold of eligible people vaccinated with at least one dose. Right now, across the state about 57% of people 16 and older have received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. So we've still got a ways to go. But in Chelan County it's higher, around 60% of people 16 and older have received the first dose of a two-dose vaccine as of May 10th. Despite the reopening, the state of emergency will not necessarily end on June 30th. That really depends on statewide ICU capacity. If ICU capacity reaches 90%, activities and events will all be scaled back again. During the announcement Inslee also discussed new masking guidelines issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The new CDC guidelines don't require that fully vaccinated people wear a mask in most indoor and outdoor settings. But keep in mind this new guidance does not apply to places like hospitals, long-term care facilities, doctors' offices, schools, and public transportation. Inslee said that everyone is still required to wear a mask in these places. So how do things look across North Central Washington now? COVID-19 incidence rates have dropped in every county with the exception of Okanogan County. Okanogan County actually has had 88 new COVID cases between April 28 and May 11. This meant they would've still remained in Phase 3 regardless of the governor's change, according to "Healthy Washington '' metrics. But Grant County's COVID data has improved a bit since the postponement, seeing the incidence rate drop from 290.6 per 100,000 to 276.6 per 100,000. They were at risk of being sent back to Phase 2, but now will remain in Phase 3 along with every other county. And in Chelan County rates have continued to drop, dipping below 100 as of May 10 with 96.7 per 100,000. So what do you think about the next couple of months? Do you expect the state to hit 70% of the eligible population vaccinated before June 30? She had earned an associate degree from Wenatchee Valley College in 2018, which helped set her on the path, she said. Lenicka graduated in June 2020 and landed a job as marketing coordinator at CMI Orchards a few weeks later. That hiring process was conducted entirely over Zoom, thanks to the pandemic. Lenicka said she never thought in her wildest dreams that she would have multiple job interviews only online… but in the end it all worked out. She told us that her time at WVC was very beneficial, allowing her to work and develop her professional skills while still pursuing an education. She transferred to CWU that fall and the next year started a business - it's called AMH Marketing. Lenicka said she saw an opportunity to help small businesses grow and develop using social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. She's worked with several businesses across different industries and has learned a lot. And she's very passionate and driven to work with local businesses because she enjoys connecting with people in the community and working alongside the owners. While at Central, Lenicka also worked as director of mentor development, supervising five student mentors and a classroom of 30 college students. From that experience she developed leadership, communication, public speaking, and organization skills. It also taught her that hard work pays off. We asked Lenicka what accomplishments she's most proud of.. And she said that graduating from Central Washington University was certainly one of them. School was always a challenge for her. As a young child Lenicka was diagnosed with ADD, ADHD and dyslexia. She said If someone would have told her 10 years ago that she would be where she is today, she would not have believed it. But now, she's a first-generation college graduate, business owner and the marketing coordinator at CMI Orchards. Getting the job at CMI is another big accomplishment that she's proud of. To Lenicka, it's a dream job! She gets to work with a dynamic group of professionals selling and marketing our delicious apples, pears and cherries. We also asked Lenicka what inspires her to be successful? She told us she's very inspired by women who have pushed themselves to be the best they can be in the business world. She's also inspired by women who lift each other up and make sure they help others excel at work. Lenicka says that being a young woman in business, it can be hard at times but it is always so inspiring to see what fellow colleagues have achieved and how they support others. This inspires her, in turn, to mentor other women in their careers. Congratulations Alyssa! Now, some history… One of the valley's best-loved steak houses, The Windmill Restaurant, started out as an unfulfilled dream. Donald Holland borrowed start-up money from his father and built the windmill-shaped building. But a partner cheated him of his nest egg. And Holland never opened the place for business. The building functioned as a roadhouse, where counterfeiters and bootleggers were said to conspire. Then, after prohibition ended, the business got a special liquor license to be able to include a bottle of beer in each of the sack lunches it prepared for state road crews. Its reputation for fine dining began in the 1950s, when Bill Glass established The Windmill as a dinner-only steak house. Thanks for listening. If you did, then you saw the production of an upcoming feature film on the aviator Jesse Brown. The film, which is called “Devotion,” takes place during the Korean War, where Brown saw combat. Filmmakers decided that the landscape around the Wenatchee area closely resembled Korea during that time. According to Deadline.com, the film stars Jonathan Majors as Jesse Brown. He's also starred in “Da Five Bloods” and “Lovecraft Country.” Costaring is Glenn Powell, who's been in “Hidden Figures” and “Top Gun: Maverick” and, pop star Joe Jonas. Filmmakers used 11 planes for the film, including Bearcats, Corsairs, Skyraiders and MiGs. Brown's story is a remarkable one, according to Deadline, as he overcame poverty and racial segregation in the South to earn a college degree, then his pilot's wings, to become an aviator by age 23. He was the first black man to be trained by the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator and the first black aviator to see combat. Brown flew 20 combat missions in his F4U Corsair before being shot down on a remote mountaintop on December 4th 1950. According to Deadline, he was supporting ground troops at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He died of his wounds despite the efforts of wingman Thomas J. Hudner Jr., who intentionally crashed his own aircraft in a rescue attempt. Former owner of the Wenatchee Daily World, Rufus Woods, became integrally involved in the 23-year battle for Grand Coulee Dam and the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project. Woods published the first story about the proposal in 1918 in The Wenatchee Daily World, which was followed by hundreds of articles about the project and editorials promoting the concept. Before we go, we'd like to remember the life of Edward Carr - a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and an architect with an unparalleled vision. Ed was born in Wenatchee in 1946. His father was an architect, and Ed remembered drawing next to him on the floor. His father died when he was six, and the family moved to the WSU Tree Fruit Research Center with his step-father, Robert. Ed joined the Wenatchee Youth Circus, which traveled around the Pacific NorthWest and lower British Columbia. His job was setting up the high wire and testing the net with a swan dive. He graduated from Whitman College, with a degree in Philosophy. During his junior year, he was an exchange student at Howard University and joined their debate team. Ed met his wife, Elizabeth, at Whitman. They were inseparable from their first date and married in 1969. Ed earned his Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. They then moved to Orcas Island where he trained as a carpenter and built his family's first home. In 1985, Ed earned a MA in Architecture from the University of Washington and started his own architecture firm in Seattle - focusing on waterfront homes. Ed's unique background as a philosopher, carpenter, and native Northwesterner, informed all his work. His houses, found throughout the San Juans and Puget Sound, harmonize with the natural beauty of the landscape and are designed to be filled with light. In a Seattle Times article on his work, Ed said, "I spent a lot of time outdoors in the islands, so I know how the weather works, the microclimates that change the ecology, where the sun hits at different times of the year." He was a passionate soccer player and sailor. He taught his sons to ski and hike. He loved a well-made espresso, taking long walks with Elizabeth, painting the landscapes of Walla Walla, gardening with native plants, and joking and drawing with his grandchildren. Ed was a philosopher and an artist. He was kind, thoughtful, and fiercely intelligent. He had a strong internal compass and never wavered in his principles. He was self-contained, and with his wife, complete. To friends missing him, he would say, "listen to Bach, take a walk, and look for beauty". Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Ed's life. Thanks for listening. Today's episode is brought to you by Equilus Group, Inc- Building Your Financial Success. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. And before we begin, do you want to share your home's holiday light display with the valley? You can add your festive decorations to our interactive map by visiting wenatcheeworld.com/holidaylights Now our feature story. At 44, Eastmont history teacher Kai Knell was a picture of health. The former Wildcat and WVC basketball star worked out five days a week and ate healthily. But on the morning of Oct. 28, his life changed. His wife Mariah found him lifeless, changing colors, and she immediately called 911. She performed CPR and once the paramedics arrived, they worked on Kai for nearly an hour, shocking his heart three times to get it beating. Kai was placed into an induced coma to prevent any further damage to his body and brain. At that time the Doctors were unsure if Kai would be able to wake up... But about 24 hours later, he awoke from the coma and completely shocked the doctors. For a healthy guy and lifelong athlete, it just did not make any sense. He wondered if he ate something bad, but he was soon diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy or ARVC which can lead to sudden death. Kai told us that “The life expectancy for males that have it is around 41. It's prone to people that are athletes or marathon runners. With that type of genetic condition, the more you exercise, the more the heart tissue turns into fat.” Now... Kai has to take medication daily and carries a defibrillator with him in case his heart stops again… and he's had to curtail most strenuous activities…. perhaps the toughest pill of all to swallow for a lifelong athlete. To read more more about Kai's journey and what the Wenatchee community is doing to help him recover, head over to www.WenatcheeWorld.com. That was Armando Bendito-Zepeda, a 26-year-old accountant from Wenatchee who is on his way to becoming a certified public accountant, taking the time this spring to help explain the CARES Act in Spanish to local business owners. His dedication to family and community landed him a spot on this year's 30 Under 35 list, the Wenatchee Valley Business World program that honors young professionals well on their way to being community leaders. Bendito-Zepeda's work ethic is inspiring and at 23, just one year out of college, he purchased a home for his parents and two younger sisters. He has since added a second house, with plans to purchase more. He told us that his parents, who are immigrants, have always been there for him. And said that “I kind of kept that in the back of my head. They moved here so I could have a better life.” Bendito-Zepeda said he's also planning to expand his mission to provide stable living environments and quality homes for low-income families on government assistance Finally, some local history, Wenatchee Valley History is brought to you by NABUR – your trusted neighborhood community. Greetings Dog Lovers! I’m so excited about today’s show. We have Dr. Ernie Ward with us and he’s an internationally recognized veterinarian known for his work in the areas of general small animal practice, life extension and longevity, practice management and leadership, long-term medication monitoring, special needs of senior dogs and cats and pet obesity. Dr. Ward is the Chief Veterinary Officer and co-founder of Wild Earth, a plant-based sustainable pet food company, and the Executive Director of Education for VerticalVet. He has authored three books, been a frequent guest on television programs and served as the resident veterinarian for the “Rachael Ray Show” from 2007 until 2014. Dr. Ward also authors "The Vet Is In", a monthly column for Dogster Magazine, was named "Speaker of the Year" for the two largest veterinary conferences in the world (VMX and WVC), the "2018 Veterinary Journalist of the Year" by the New York Pet Fashion Show, and is a highly sought after veterinary media expert.Dr. Ward, why did you write this book? How long did it take to do the research, gather the science and actually write it?So, it’s long been known that some of the meat found in pet foods (especially low-cost products) comes from animals that are known as “four D”: dead, dying, diseased, or disabled animals unfit for human consumption. What exactly is factory farming? Can you share some of the statistics concerning the pet food industry? And you say that pet food is also a major cause of climate change? How so?What is the solution? You say that you have some exciting plant-based research and that dogs should not be fed an ancestral diet.Dogs originally were carnivores, but we’ve evolved them to be omnivores? What about their teeth? For example, cows have broad, flat teeth that are ideal for grinding down plant matter and dogs have narrow pointy teeth that are ideal for cutting into meat. Why do you think that plant-based is healthier for most pets? Are any other nutrients that do need to be supplemented? What are the best non-meat high quality plant proteins?Do you have any cautions against home-prepared plant-based diets? Are some inadequate and unbalanced? You’ve co-founded the plant-based pet food company Wild Earth, makers of the world’s first high-protein plant-based dog food. Can you share more about the products? Why is Wild Earth dog food better than other vegan recipes?Since it’s a kibble, do you have a high heat process like the regularly extruded kibble?

This week’s podcast focuses on the remarkable Wenatchee Naturalist program. My guests are Susan Ballinger, who founded the program, a mother and daughter team – Jan and Chelsea Evans — who participated in the program, and Michelle Gedrose of Wenatchee Valley College. The Wenatchee Naturalist program is part of WVC's continuing education program. There are many community-building layers to this program. It brings together students of all ages to learn about the wonders of the natural world around us by connecting them with local experts in wildlife, insects, and the flora and fauna of North Central Washington. Students commit to volunteering at least 20 hours a week to conservation nonprofits in our region, which helps these organizations succeed. The program also helps Wenatchee Valle College connect more meaningful with the local community. Inspiring people to get engaged and make a personal investment in bettering the community is the hallmark of this unique program. Read the whole story in Wednesday's Wenatchee World.

Wenatchee Valley College is quietly doing some critical work engaging the community and supporting the economic development of North Central Washington. The college is a critical asset in the valley and to see it quietly and effectively engaging in significant projects is heartening. I interviewed Stacy Luckensmeyer, the business and industry liaison for the college for the Art of Community NCW podcast, which is dedicated to fostering and celebrating creative community building. Luckensmeyer has been connecting the college with the business community and encouraging the development of what she calls an “entrepreneurial ecosystem” in the region. She does this work through WVC’s Center for Entrepreneurship. One state-funded program just getting off the ground in NCW is called “economic gardening,” which allows local companies with the potential to grow into new markets or niches to get free expert research on market development and business risk. She’s looking for businesses that want to take advantage of this program. The college is also the cornerstone of the Apple STEM Network, which is bringing together WVC, Wenatchee, Eastmont and Cashmere schools, the North Central Educational Service District, the Greater Wenatchee Area Technology Alliance and others to develop Science, Technology, Engineer and Math jobs and educational opportunities here. Luckensmeyer has been a critical player in the core team supporting the Our Valley Our Future grass roots community-building effort as well as part of the informal valley-wide economic development effort that is working to build partnerships and foster collaboration. She's a believer in the adage that "change is going to happen to us or through us" and that engaging the community as part of owning our economic future is a significant advantage for us. WVC hasn't sat down to podacst in a while, so let's take some time to catch up on some stuff we've been doing and some stuff coming up ahead! Once again, sorry for the poorer audio quality, but hopefully you'll enjoy our banter anyway!
KSL BEYOND THE BADGE: Officer Josue Llil The following nomination letter was written by Roxeanne Vainuku, Public Information Officer for West Valley City: A BOY AND A BIRD: A couple weeks back, WVCPD Officer Llil handled a very special case; a stolen parakeet. His supervisor shared this story, "Julian, an 8 year old WVC resident, only had his parakeet, Prieto, for a couple days when it escaped his grasp and flew away for good. Julian's sadness was compounded when his family found a remarkably similar bird for sale on line. While the family suspected that the bird was their very own Prieto, they had no way to prove it and Officer Llil found himself with little recourse to help Julian. Not willing to leave Julian heartbroken, Officer Llil took it upon himself to make it right. Officer Llil spent his own money to buy a new parakeet for Julian. Julian was thrilled and this time, Neuvo Prieto has his wings clipped and should stay close by Julian's side." http://www.ksl.com/?nid=462&sid=40892781&title=officer-josue-llil-west-valley-police-department
This very special episode features special guests Mr Lim Soon Heng from BFM radio, Audrey Then and Andy Chong, alongside us regular WVC troublemakers.
This week's guest is Mariavittoria Mangini, PhD, FNP. Dr. Mangini is a member of the board of directors of the Women's Visionary Congress, and has been a family nurse midwife for twenty five years. She has written extensively on the impact of psychedelic experiences in shaping the lives of her contemporaries, and has worked closely with many of the most distinguished investigators in this field. Her current project is the development of a Thanatology program for the study of death and dying. Jonathan was alerted to her work and her resonance with Psychedelic Parenting when a listener passed along a digital copy of her 2000 PhD dissertation entitled Yes, Mom Took Acid: The Sociohistorical Influence of Prior Psychedelic Drug Use in Adults. We soon discovered that not only was she a WVC board member, but also working in a family practice that incorporated cannabis as a regular part of their work. In this talk, Jonathan and Dr. Mangini discuss the upcoming Women's Visionary Congress NYC Salon (where the Psychedelic Parenting Away Team will be tabling), the role of psychedelics in the history of the baby boomer generation, the growth of interest and understanding of death in American culture as the boomers "run out of runway," and Dr. Mangini's role in the resurgence of Psychedelic Studies though her efforts, with George Greer and Charles Grob on the 1998 Monograph Edition of The Journal of Psychoactive Drugs As always, we ask that if you find value in this work, that you consider making a tax-deductible donation to Psychedelic Parenting through our Fiscal Sponsor, MAPS, using the button below: donate-button TOPICS AND WEBSITES DISCUSSED IN THIS PODCAST: Women's Visionary Congress NYC Salon Tickets Psymposia's "Visionary Women" afterparty event Dr. Mangini's Bio (WVC board members) Speakers at NYC Salon Allyson Grey Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM) Katherine MacLean, PhD Julie Holland, MD Moody Bitches The Pot Book (editor) The Trips Festival Wikipedia entry The Trips Festival DVD The Merry Pranksters Wikipedia Entry Stanislav Grof Erowid Character Vault Personal Website Joan Halifax Wikipedia Entry Upaya Zen Center Bio Journal of Psychoactive Drugs 1998 Monograph Issue Betty Eisner Erowid Character Vault Wikipedia Entry The Trip Treatment by Michael Pollan Shpongle Ecofarm Conference The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead Tobacco: A Forgotten Healing Plant Dr Frank Lucido Alice In Wonderland Statue in Central Park Map LSD: Problem Child and Wonderdrug (Albert Hoffman 100th Birthday Symposium) Thanatology Order of the Good Death Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty Ask a Mortician YouTube Channel Undertaking L.A. Guest speaker: Terence McKenna PROGRAM NOTES: [NOTE: All quotations are by Terence McKenna.] "It seemed probable to me that this phenomenon encountered in deep psychedelic experiences with psilocybin actually has a potential historical impact. It is a kind of human ability, which is at present submerged in the psyche, contactable only by the shamanic means of journeying into historical hyperspace. In other words, of going into that place where the adumbrations of the future are intense enough that you can have an intimation, at least, of what is to come.” “I think the gradual evolution of language is actually the gradual lifting of the veil that is imposed between ourselves and meaning by the planetary ecology. In other words, the forward thrust of history is actually regulated by the ecology, and it is regulated through control of the evolution of language. Because what you cannot think you cannot do, and where you cannot imagine you cannot steer your culture and go. So I'm proposing on one level that hallucinogens be thought of as social pheromones that regulate the rate at which language develops and therefore regulates the evolution of human culture generally.” “Tribalism is a social form which can exist at any level of technology. It's a complete illusion to associate it with low levels of technology. It is probably, in fact, a form of social organization second only to the family in its ability to endure.” “This is what magic is. It's being able to speak in a voice which makes things happen, being able to speak in a voice which causes facts to be beheld by groups of people in a way that has been purged from profane language, for us relegated to poetry and that sort of thing.” “The history of man that you don't know is what your unconscious is made out of. Just as the history of yourself that you don't know is what your personal unconscious is made out of.” “Knowledge, or verbal facility, is no proof that you know what you're talking about.” Download MP3 PCs – Right click, select option Macs – Ctrl-Click, select option Women's Visionary Congress Consciousness, Healing, and Social Justice The Women's Visionary Congress (WVC) is an annual gathering of visionary women healers, scholars, activists and artists who study consciousness and altered states.
