Brenna and Joe wrap up another Spooky Season with Stephanie Perkins' 2017 slasher novel There's Someone Inside Your House and Patrick Brice's 2021 Netflix adaptation. The book is fast-paced, although it loses its message and winds up being a little forgettable, while the film starts off strong, then nosedives.Plus: gory murder descriptions, a case *against* colour-blind casting in the film, and which set pieces we like the best/least.Wanna connect with the show? Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! We are joined this week by Christine Riccio and Natasha Polis from Those Forking Fangirls to discuss the significant uptick in interest (and sales) of literary romance and YA novels. Today's conversation was inspired by this NPR article:From meet-cutes to happy endings, romance readers feel the love as sales heat up. Christine and Natasha help us dig in on the pipeline from Young Adult to Romance, how the genres somewhat overlap, and how the culture has shifted to make open enjoyment of the Romance genre more socially accepted. Might some of the shifts in cover art portrayals have made the genre more comfortable and accessible to readers? Are there any cases where the cute, cartoony covers fail to communicate the spicy, smutty passages between the covers? Fan Fiction seems to have played a major role in these developments, with more people participating in online fan spaces to create new content. There are even recent examples of very successful fan fic authors going on to become published, like Christina Lauren, EL James, Alice Clayton, and Ali Hazelwood. Is there any direct correlation between the rise in interest for romance novels as a genre and the uptick in romance-based reality TV shows? What sort of escapism do they provide? What recommendations do Christine and Natasha have for current romance readers, or those hoping to get started? "From Blood and Ash" by Jennifer L Aremntrout, "Spoiler Alert" by Olivia Dade, "A Court of Silver Flames" by Sarah J Maas, "Part of Your World" by Abby Jimenez, "Verity" by Colleen Hoover, "Anna & the French Kiss" by Stephanie Perkins, "The Soulmate Equation" by Christina Lauren, "The Hating Game" by Sally Thorne, "A Court of Thorns and Roses" by Sarah J. Maas. And of COURSE - "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer. This week's recommendations are all over the map: Andrew's shameless plug to use his Visible by Verizon referral code to get $20 off your first month, "Sons of the Forest" (Laura), 'Daisy Jones & The Six' on Prime Video (Pam), "Ninth House" (Christine), and "Sanditon" on Masterpiece airing 3/19/23 (Natasha). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon: Last week we revealed all the bad things we did as kids and teens, but this week we're revealing the much more scandalous escapades our parents thought we were into. Weed orgies, illicit drug use on a church playground, underage sex, and all sorts of really interesting things none of us were actually cool enough to be doing.

The cast of There's Someone Inside Your House was excited to sit down with us to talk about how this movie is paying homage to those that came before it, such as Scream and Halloween -- while forging its own path. We spoke with Sydney Park, Théodore Pellerin, Asjha Cooper, Jesse LaTourette, Dale Whibley & Diego Josef -- as well as -- Director Patrick Brice & screenwriter Henry Gayden. The cast discussed why the horror genre was so fun, the killer's weird twist, and how they were able to accomplish some good scares. Brice and Gayden add their thoughts on the genre and why they think it needed a makeover. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Polina Jdanova Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: Makani Young has moved from Hawaii to quiet, small-town Nebraska to live with her grandmother and finish high school, but as the countdown to graduation begins, her classmates are stalked by a killer intent on exposing their darkest secrets to the entire town, terrorizing victims while wearing a life-like mask of their own face. With a mysterious past of her own, Makani and her friends must discover the killer's identity before they become victims themselves. THERE'S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE is based on Stephanie Perkins' New York Times best-selling novel of the same name and written for the screen by Henry Gayden (Shazam!), directed by Patrick Brice (Creep), and produced by James Wan's Atomic Monster (The Conjuring) and Shawn Levy's 21 Laps (Stranger Things). We've got our happy faces on today cause we're delving in the glitz, the drama, the passion, of the Pan Pacific Grand Prix. That's right, we're watching the absolute stone cold Australian classic, Strictly Ballroom. Our themes are legacy and conformity so, as you can image, there's a lot to unpack! It's a bumper ep because we are joined by screenwriter and absolutely delightful human, Andrea Mann. Hope you enjoy this one as much as we did recording it. You can find the show notes on the website. This episode was recorded on 30 April 2022. Thanks for listening! We'll be back with Season 7 next week - we're reading Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. Themes will be up on the site shortly, so stay tuned! It's all over! Our time with this wonderful book as at an end. We read chapters 80-86 through the theme of meaning, and reflect on our journey with Simon, Baz and co. We have A LOT of feelings. In this final section, Agatha gets caught between the Mage & Ebb. Simon gives the Humdrum everything. Penelope casts a spell that backfires. And in the end, Agatha flees to California, Penny & Simon get a flat together, and Baz is still hopelessly devoted to the worst Chosen One to ever be chosen. This episode was recorded on 2 April 2022. You can find the show notes on the website. Also, we now have merch! Including 'Perfectly normal roommate behaviour' shirts and 'Justice for Lucy/Natasha/Ebb' stickers – check it out here! This episode was recorded on 2 April 2022. Thanks for listening! There's Someone Inside Your House is a Netflix horror movie based on the YA novel by Stephanie Perkins. Shazam! writer Henry Gayden adapted the book and talks to Write On about tackling the horror genre and injecting it with emotion: "I've always liked slasher movies, but they've been my least favorite subgenre because you never really get emotionally invested in them… [Stephanie Perkins] comes from a YA romance background. [There's Someone Inside Your House] was her first horror book, so she created all these characters that were great, and I loved them, and there was a love story inside of this slasher book, and I really responded to it. And because I was emotionally invested, I suddenly wanted to write a slasher movie." Henry goes on to give advice on taking your time developing a career: "I think a lot of people are in a rush to succeed right away when they're just not mature enough, mentally and also as a writer, to handle what you've gotta go through." If you are a book lover of a certain age, you may have spent a lot of time reading authors like Judy Blume, Paula Danziger, Gary Paulsen, or Christopher Pike when you were a teenager. Although books began to be categorized as ‘young adult” as early as the 1960s, when we were teens we didn’t know that, and we certainly didn’t care what the boring grownups were calling the books we gravitated to. While it blows our minds to think that it has been 30+ years since the end of the 80s and early 1990s, a lot has changed in the book publishing industry since the time when we were young adults. Young adult literature is everywhere and has many subgenres, including dystopian, romance, and historical fiction. Our guest this week, Mindy Jett, is a self-professed book nerd who still gravitates toward YA fiction even though she has teenagers of her own. She talks about how reading YA is just like immersing yourself in a sci-fi world or a different time period except it is the world from a teen perspective. We discuss how reading YA fiction has given her more insight into her own children, and how much nostalgia from her own childhood plays into her love of books from that era. This is our last regular episode of 2020. Next week we will have a wrap-up episode where Carrie and I discuss some of our favorite books of the year that we overlooked during past episodes. Then we will take several weeks off for the holidays but will be back in early January to start season 4 with a whole new crop of cool and interesting bookish guests. Books mentioned-- 1- Forever by Judy Blume 2- From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L.
