Let’s be honest this is a BIG question and in many respects I’m throwing it out to you so that we can start a two way on this for inclusion in a forthcoming Tuesday or Thursday snapshot edition. Vincent Laforet is back for his third and final part and he’s in the air, for an ambitious photo project that almost didn’t get off the ground at all. There are moments in your life, where you make decisions that change just about everything; sliding door moments. If today's guest Vincent Laforet hadn’t seen a white boxed package on a desk during a visit to Canon that held a particular brand and model of camera, if he hadn’t then essentially begged for an opportunity, if he hadn’t proposed his audacious plan quite so passionately, perhaps he wouldn’t have changed direction quite so radically? This week, on the only Malay-languaged film podcast in the world (possibly), Muz is stuck somewhere in the Klang Valley (perhaps), so Fikri sat down with Diaz Hernawan and discussed his current and future career as a cinematographer, as well as the differences between Malaysian and Indonesian cinema. We also look at ‘The Conjuring' (a bit), as well as ‘Mobius' by Vincent Laforet (a lot). All this and more on the only show in the world that releases its pre-Raya-recorded episodes months after Hari Raya (definitely)! Originally published on 19th December 2013.

Timur Civan is a cinematographer working on commercials, documentaries, scripted narrative and experimental. Working his way through the craft and the New York film scene for over ten years, he sets himself apart with his experimental work. A notable example of this style being the music video for Nigel Stanford titled Cymatics. I’ve known Timur for the past 3 to 4 years meeting and hanging out in the same NYC film circles. We both frequent Vincent Laforet’s poker game where Timur acts like he doesn’t know how to play but miraculously ends up winning rather consistently. Somehow I felt this information was relevant and helps paint a picture for you all. In the podcast we discuss Timur’s current transitional state as he finds himself very close to joining the union as a DP. Reflective and thoughtful, this conversation provides insights into the lesser discussed aspects of craft building, the ways in which our talents and opportunities can feel cyclical and how to anticipate these cycles and make them work for you both artistically and financially.

Pulitzer Prize and Cannes Lion award winner Vincent LaForet has accomplished so much in still and motion photography, yet he continues to push himself to create images he has “never seen before”. This drive has led to his most recent passion project on high-altitude night photography and the incredible book, "AIR". LaForet joins us for an in-depth conversation on the thrills, as well as the logistical, technical, and physical challenges of creating the images for this book. From lessons taught to him by his father, to combat and sports photography, to the pressure of self-funding a project, to gear and technical advice, LaForet regales us with wonderful stories from his career and the making of "AIR". Vincent Laforet is a professional photographer turned commercial director and cinematographer. He was the youngest staff photographer ever hired for the New York Times where he shared The Pulitzer for his international coverage in The Middle East documenting events unfolding post 9/11. After years of success at the paper, the need for creativity and artistry prompted him to do the unthinkable, he left what most considered to be the job you held onto forever. In the pod we discuss his upbringing and how he managed to become the youngest hired staff member of the famed NYT photo dept and the journey he’s been on ever since. Vince is well known in the photography world as a teacher through his prolific blog. This side of him is impossible to turn off and comes through during our conversation. He’s always trying to extoll advice and share what he’s learned. Contrary to the first two episodes, Vince is older and brings with him a different perspective. I’m hopeful that the podcast can continue to bring in a variety of voices either because of age, experience, background, artistic genre - with each new voice the conversation becomes richer.
I came across a feature story about a photographer by the name of Vincent Laforet. I didn’t recognize the name but after a few minutes I recognized the work. Hearing just a small overview of his story had me inspired and interested in what new things I could do with my own photography. We need those reminders; the things we hear or see that relaunch our passion. I think most days I feel lucky to be a full time photographer and pursue my passion while making a living, but there are days when I lose sight of why I am doing this. I don’t really know if I was feeling down about my photography career or anything but when I came across this story it got me thinking about those times when I have trouble staying motivated. Vincent Laforet said something that resonated with me: “As a photographer and visual communicators you try to find images no one has ever seen before.” We need to remember our place as photographers. We love what we do and enjoy a lot of what comes with that, but to be reminded of our duty as “visual communicators” is so important. Think about those pictures you see every day that do little for you. You view, understand, and move on in one swift motion, as if it were a reflex. Those types of images are damaging to our purpose as image makers. We need to communicate visually. With all the social media, TV, and internet we are numb to the vast majority of images so we need to find our voice and begin making worthwhile images. Keep up the motivation and please send your photography and business questions to me through the contact page. http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/high-art-photography-from-the-heavens/ http://www.vincentlaforet.com/ Happy Shooting! -Rob

On this episode Robert chats with his good friend Vincent Laforet whose photojournalism work caught Robert's eye over a decade ago when he was a college student at Ohio University. Lately Vincent is known mostly for his work in the film industry, a transition he's made over the past 6 years, and now many don't realize his background began in journalism. Straight out of college he spent over 300 days per year covering sporting events for Allsport, which later became Getty. He was later hired as a New York Times staff photographer where he shared a Pulitzer prize for his work in Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2002. They talk about his background from the age of 15 when his father first put a camera in his hands, to working his way through college at Northwestern University, his internships, and his transition from a top photojournalist into a successful film director who just completed his first big-time campaign with Nike. Oh, he also just wrecked his right arm shattering it in a dune buggy accident in the deserts of Dubai. Robert took advantage of Vincent's fragile state as he recovered a few blocks from Robert's apartment in Manhattan. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode of The Photo Brigade Podcast.
