What if empathy isn't just about being nice, but your secret weapon for building systems that actually work? Lizabeth Wesely-Casella, CEO of L12 Services, spent her early career in construction wearing hard hats and reading blueprints in the 90s. She learned that communication wasn't just a nice-to-have—it was survival. That foundation led her to combine behavioral science, Lean Six Sigma, and internal communications into frameworks that create "clarity from chaos." What We Dig Into The Real Definition of Empathy in Business - Why feeling your team's pain (not just acknowledging it) changes how you design processes and communications. Why Structure Creates Freedom - How the right frameworks liberate people instead of constraining them. The Communications Chaos Tolerance Problem - Organizations are drowning workforces in messages. How to figure out what people can actually handle. People as Your Most Critical Channel - Your middle managers are communication channels, not just message recipients. AI as an Enabler (The Bad Kind) - Are we using AI to avoid the hard work of prioritization and focus? The CATS System - Her Communication Accountability Tool that holds leadership accountable for actually communicating. Why This Matters In our fractured landscape where priorities multiply daily, Lizabeth's approach of disciplined focus and human-centered processes feels essential. Whether you're managing return-to-office mandates or trying to get teams to read internal communications, this conversation bridges strategy and tactics. Notable Quotes "Clear communication was going to be my superpower. And it was, it was really the foundation of all good projects." - Lizabeth Wesely-Casella [05:54 → 06:07] "Our worlds are overwhelmed and it is noise. No matter whether you're getting your internal comms at the office or you're getting your advertisements on television or the radio, whatever, we are all at our max capacity for absorbing any more information." - Lizabeth Wesely-Casella [36:28 → 36:48] "Accountability means that we've created a structure that connects the dots, where along the way you'll be able to make sure that you are in line with what's expected of you and you don't have to have a major course correction." - Lizabeth Wesely-Casella [46:58 → 47:13] "My preference would be for people to focus on how to use AI in the internal comm space as a way of creating strategy for low engagement, for channel use, for opportunities to create greater organizational awareness between silos." - Lizabeth Wesely-Casella [58:28 → 58:47] "That's where the Internal Comms Pro becomes the specialist in understanding what the priorities are, reducing the noise and making really strategic decisions about what gets communicated. Because you can't communicate everything." - Lizabeth Wesely-Casella [1:03:58 → 1:04:14] Resources and Links Dan Nestle Inquisitive Communications | Website The Trending Communicator | Website Communications Trends from Trending Communicators | Dan Nestle's Substack Dan Nestle | LinkedIn Dan Nestle | Twitter/X Lizabeth Wesely-Casella L12 Services | Website Communication Accountability Tools (CATs) Bundle | Download Lizabeth Wesely-Casella | LinkedIn Timestamps 0:00 Intro: Empathy as a strategic advantage 5:19 From construction to communications expertise 10:10 Combining behavioral science and Lean Six Sigma 17:06 Overly optimistic about multitasking capabilities 24:42 AI as potential enabler of bad behaviors 31:27 Challenges of AI summarizing internal comms 39:43 Reframing accountability as a positive tool 46:18 Creating common language around accountability 51:26 AI adoption causing process breakdowns 58:28 Using AI strategically in internal comms 1:04:52 The irreplaceable human element in communication (Notes co-created by Human Dan, Claude, and Flowsend.ai ) Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textThis week I, once again, briefly touch on how long it takes to recover postpartum. This after a question from someone who asked "how long it would take to recover if you didn't do anything vs following a program".It's a fascinating question tbh and it kind of all depends on what you mean with "post partum recovery".I explain why I believe everyone needs a bit of assistance with their recovery and what the best methods, in order of effectiveness, are.I then talk for a while about the importance of following the right science communicators.A great post by Dr Colenso Semple on threads (my preferred platform) shows that just citing a paper, and even reading a paper, is not enough. In this case she highlights that one of the studies referenced in the paper was now retracted and written by someone who had falsified data. This shows you just how important it is to follow the right science communicators. I personally follow several and they are all experts in their related fields. Getting ALL your science info from one source (for instance Huberman) leaves you open to "the grift" and if people don't really know what they're talking about/citing then it's very easy to misinterpret a piece of information. (As I highlight by talking about another post with regards to Artificial Sweeteners and increased bodyfat %)Here is the link to that paper and here is the reference I talk about which shows why you really have to read these things carefully. As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles! So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation! BUT, if you decide you want to do the rest of the program, after only 5 months of paying $10/£8 a month you now get FREE LIFE TIME ACCESS! That's $50 max spend, in case you were wondering. This means you can sign up after your first child, use the program and recover and then still have access after giving birth to child 2 and 3!None of this "pay X amount a year" nonsense, once you've paid..you've paid! This makes HPNB not just the most efficient and complete post-partum recovery program, it's also BY FAR the best value.Though I'm not terribly active on Instagram and Facebook you can follow us there. I am however active on Threads so find me there! Eli Williams of Day One Agency joins the conversation to unpack findings from the agency's latest report, Gen Z: Life, Actually. The study challenges common assumptions about Gen Z and reveals a generation that's more multifaceted—and in some ways, more traditional—than many marketers assume.Through the lens of public relations and cultural insight, this episode explores how Gen Z is reshaping expectations around work, money, identity, and influence. Williams outlines three distinct cohorts within the generation and explains how their diverse values are already influencing the future of brand communication.Moderated by Fred Cook, the conversation addresses key questions, including:In what ways is Gen Z more similar to their parents than expected? How do their views on stability, risk, and tradition split across subgroups? Why does financial anxiety shape so many of their decisions? What should communicators understand about Gen Z's internal diversity? How can media literacy become a strategic asset in engaging Gen Z?Key Discussion HighlightsThe report identifies three mindsets within Gen Z:Neo-Traditionalists value stability and lean toward conservative idealsFluid Pragmatists take a cautious, balanced approach to major life decisionsInternet Age Explorers reject conventional paths in favor of experimentation and experienceMoney as a Central ConcernAcross all groups, financial uncertainty plays a central role in shaping priorities, spending, and life planning.A New Life TimelineUnlike previous generations, Gen Z is not in a hurry to pursue traditional milestones like marriage, homeownership, or long-term careers. Their timelines are fluid, self-defined, and experience-driven.The Implications for PRGen Z's complexity demands a more nuanced, culturally aware approach to communication. Understanding their values—and the differences within the generation—is key to long-term engagement.Media Literacy as a Core CompetencyGrowing up in the digital age, Gen Z is becoming increasingly adept at filtering content and questioning sources. How we say what we say matters in ministry every day. When the media is on your church doorstep, that is not the time to decide who will speak on behalf of your organization and what to say. What the receptionist says to an incoming caller can either throw gas on a fire or de-escalate an explosive situation. You get to choose. Is there a time NOT to pray with someone? Is “no comment” the answer to give a media request? When can your words be used against your organization in litigation? When is texting or other communication confidential? Should an anonymous letter be dropped in the shredder? Come tidy up your communication skills and help your team do the same. Donna Barrett Assemblies of God, General Secretary

How are you using or avoiding artificial intelligence in your podcast? AI is a shiny new offering with loads of possibilities, but a lot of people are also understandably threatened by its wide-reaching and ever-growing abilities. On today's episode, Mary connects with Amanda Cupido, an adjunct professor, TEDx speaker, podcast producer, and author of the book “Let's Talk Podcasting.” Amanda has her finger firmly on the pulse of all things new in the world of podcasts, and she shares her deeply researched insights on the pros and cons of welcoming generative AI into our shows—just how wide should we be opening that door? From concern around the inherent biases of AI outputs to the tool's potential to build the confidence of new voices in audio, Amanda's hot takes might just change the way you incorporate artificial intelligence into your podcast. Transcript with Audio Description: [MUSIC IN - GHOSTHOOD FEATURING SARA AZRIEL “LET'S GO” BEGINS] MARY: AI, artificial intelligence. People love it or they're afraid of it. On one hand it's this shiny new object, people flock to it. It's been helping us write better, maybe give us ideas and do that basic level of tasks that sometimes we don't want to do. But then on the other hand, it's the thought of robots taking over the world, making decisions that might be wrong, or even, gasp, replacing actual humans. So yes, I too all those fears and the shiny new object syndrome more so the fears though. So I haven't really been jumping on the AI bandwagon. And yet when I look at the nitty gritty side of things that I do, a lot of it is AI involved. You know, there's a lot of automations and workflows that are just always happening in the background for me. So why are we so scared? Amanda Cupdio tells us that it's the generative AI that has us all fearful. The generative part, that's the AI that's gotten very, very good lately. So I wanted to know more about it to A, calm my fears, but also my curiosity to it for the whole side of podcasting. Amanda came into my world through a mutual podcasting friend shout out to Aaron Johnson. Not only is Amanda an award winning podcast producer, TEDx speaker, and an entrepreneur, founder and CEO of Lead Podcasting, Amanda is also the author of the Amazon number one bestseller Let's Talk Podcasting: The Essential Guide To Doing It Right and now a kids' version of that book too. And if all of that wasn't enough to keep her busy, to top it all off, she's helping the next generation of podcasters as an adjunct professor to redefine the radio courses at both Seneca Polytechnic and Toronto Metropolitan University. To top it all off yet again is also teaching a new generative AI course at Seneca, which is the thing that piqued my interest and why I really wanted to get her thoughts on how AI can be good for podcasting, so that we're not so afraid of what's to come. I also have such a love for her because we both are former radio people and she was the first woman to be a program director at a talk radio station in Toronto. Which really blows my mind because Toronto is the biggest market in Canada and this milestone is actually relatively new in our recent history, so how is that still possible? But kudos to her. Congrats on that one. Okay, back to the topic at hand. Whether you are using AI or not in your podcast, in your podcast workflow, in the creation of your show, you are really going to enjoy this chat because, like I said, AI is a part of our podcasting world. So we need to be aware of how it's impacting our space and what unfolds for the industry itself and for the next generation of podcasters. This is episode number 95 with Amanda Cupido on The Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. > MARY: Thank you so much for listening to the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd love it if you'd share it with a podcasting friend. And to reveal more voicing and podcasting tips, click on over to VisibleVoicePodcast.com. Until next time.
YOU - The Master Entrepreneur - A Guide to True Greatness with Stan Hustad
With some life lessons about communication and the power of point of the moment radio and television in today's world. Right now there are hundreds of programs and broadcast features about the passing of Pope Francis. And we note that and comment on some of the life lessons for the man who died the day after Easter. Probably just as he wanted. However many years ago the Pope then almost died in an assassination attempt in Saint Peter's square when a loan gunman tried to kill him. I was on worldwide radio that very day and it was a very challenging and interesting story and day and I learned a lot that day that has helped me as a communicator and a broadcaster today, and I'd like to share a little bit of what I learned with you if that's OK? And blessings to all and blessings on the memory of Pope Francis Then we asked our robot friend STOSH to make a few comments and do a little review of the work I did and as always he has some good and unique things to say and so here they are . When the Pope Was Shot—And We Went Live: A Broadcaster's Remembrance By Stan Hustad | What It Takes Radio – "Stan, what do we do now? The Pope's been shot!" I remember that moment like it was yesterday. May 13, 1981. I was standing in the master control room at Trans World Radio on the island of Bonaire when those words hit me like a lightning bolt. The Pope had been shot. Most people don't remember where they were that day. But I do. Because I was about to go on the air with a program I had carefully recorded in advance. It was business as usual—until it wasn't. That day reminded me of the incredible power and responsibility of real-time communication. You see, Trans World Radio was one of the largest international Christian radio broadcasters in the world. From that little island in the Caribbean, we beamed content in 15 languages to audiences across continents. The program I hosted, Caribbean Night Call, was typically a laid-back mix of music and musing. Though the station was Christian in foundation, this particular show was meant for everyone. That night, though, it had to be something different. Something more. The plan was simple: at 11:05, and run the pre-recorded program as scheduled. But when I heard the news, I knew that tape was already outdated, irrelevant—and maybe even offensive. What kind of communicator would I be if I carried on with business as usual while the world was reeling from the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II? So, we scrapped the recording. I went live. No script. No teleprompter. Just my voice, a microphone, and a fast-moving, emotional story unfolding in real-time. I scrambled for updates from the BBC and Voice of America. I reached out to people for live perspectives. One phrase that emerged and struck me deeply was this: “It's like shooting God.” That's what someone reportedly cried out when they heard the news. It reminded me how, for millions, the Pope represented more than a man—he was a spiritual symbol. And an attack on him felt like an attack on the sacred itself. Though I was exhausted by 1 a.m., I knew we had done the right thing. We met the moment. We served our audience by responding, not reacting—by being present, not polished. And that brings us to today. The death of Pope Francis, while not a tragedy in the same vein, once again reminds us of how powerful it is to speak to the moment. As I awoke early this morning—my “hour of power” at 4 a.m.—I realized that, once again, my responsibility was not to run yesterday's program, but to speak into today's story. Whether it's a snowstorm in Minnesota or a death in the Vatican, the moment matters. The point of the moment (what I call the “P.O.M.”) is when communication becomes not just content, but connection. Radio—and now video, podcasts, and livestreams—gives us the privilege to meet people where they are, not where we wish they were. Whether you're a communications professional, business leader, or simply curious about organizational change dynamics, this episode is packed with actionable insights. Lynn's expertise, combined with Dan's probing questions, creates a compelling conversation on navigating corporate transformation while keeping employees informed, engaged, and aligned. Listen in and hear about... Understanding the distinct roles of change communicators and change managers. The importance of communicators being part of the core project team. How AI tools enhance the communication audit process. Conducting communication audits to uncover organizational practices. Strategies for smaller organizations to implement "pulse audits." Aligning company values with leadership actions for change readiness. Why change should have a defined start, middle, and end. Notable Quotes On the Role of Communicators in Change: "I've always said that one of our superpowers as communicators is that curiosity, the inquisitiveness and the kind of relentless interrogation that we bring to certain projects, hopefully in a good way, where we ask the questions that nobody thinks of or that other people think might be, oh, I don't want to ask a stupid question." - Dan Nestle [12:21 - 12:52] On the Evolution of Change Communication: "I think the recognition that change is important is a big step. And so it's evolving. I worked on a project and this was this corporate acquisition, the first time I was involved in change. And I was working with these project managers who weren't familiar. You know, this was a new process." - Lynn Zimmerman [29:57 → 30:15] On the Importance of Employee Communication: "It's also what a communicator needs to do, which is to speak to your audience in the manner in which they. They prefer to be spoken to. And if you're speaking their language from the get go, you will absolutely have much more success with your message." - Dan Nestle [32:13 - 32:53] The Power of Communication Audits: "I know I have one client that we did an audit a couple years ago and she still carries around the report in her, her work bag because it has so much information that helps her think about how to better communicate with, with her employees." - Lynn Zimmerman [38:29 → 38:46] On the Importance of Values in Change Management: "If you only pull your values out when you're going through a major change, then it's going to confuse people. Or if you throw away your values when you announce a major change, they're going to see that as well and they're not going to believe you." - Lynn Zimmerman [1:01:44 → 1:01:57] The Future of Change Communication: "I think change needs to change. And because change is not going away, and I don't really like the whole change is constant, you know, that's. That's not how change works. Change needs to have a start, middle and end, or else you're just creating chaos within your organization and uncertainty." - Lynn Zimmerman [59:28 → 59:47] On the Role of Internal Communications in Change: "Internal comms has a really big role in change, is making sure that those, that those company values are lived and that they're understood and that people know the vision of the company, what we're trying to accomplish." - Lynn Zimmerman [1:02:05 → 1:02:17] The Challenge for Internal Communications Teams: "In the defense of internal, calm comms folks, it's, they're busy. These people are way too busy. And you know, it's a absolutely. Traditionally underfunded, we're understaffed. And so even adding some of those things are hard. But if you can make the time to do those things, it will help you create a stronger case for doing something new." - Lynn Zimmerman [1:08:46 → 1:09:10] Resources and Links Dan Nestle Inquisitive Communications | Website The Trending Communicator | Website Communications Trends from Trending Communicators | Dan Nestle's Substack Dan Nestle | LinkedIn Dan Nestle | Twitter/X Lynn Zimmerman Swing Communication | Website Communication Audit Toolkit - Demystifying Communication Audits Lynn Zimmerman | LinkedIn Timestamped key moments from this episode (as generated by Fireflies.ai)

They say communications – specifically public relations – is one of the more tactical, strategic, and yes, I'll admit, stressful jobs, you can have. Eleanor Hawkins would probably agree. A former PR professional, she is now a reporter for Axios covering the PR & communications industry. In her Axios Communicators newsletter, she tracks the biggest news items of the day and looks at them through a PR lens. On this episode of Press Profiles, we talk to Eleanor about some recent newsworthy events – President Trump's DEI rollback, the tragic crash of American Airlines flight 5342 in Washington DC, and even, the knockdown, drag out Hollywood PR battle between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni – and the role PR played in each event. It's an interesting conversation that pulls back the curtain on the industry. We also talk to Eleanor about her career journey, learning to write in Axios's signature “Smart Brevity” style, her go to restaurant in Alabama, and even her work with Cookie Monster. Yep, we cover all that and a whole lot more.
