HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersAfter an absence of five years, Canadian hardcore punk outfit Cancer Bats are finally returning to our shores next month for an eight-date run of shows in a belated celebration of the band's most recent 2022 album Psychic Jailbreak. That album marked a changing of the guard for Cancer Bats, with founding guitarist Scott Middleton leaving before the album was recorded, forcing the remaining three members into an uncomfortable writing and recording process that ultimately brought out the best in each of them. The album was a resounding success but is yet to be performed live in this country, a blight that shall be rectified in just over three weeks, with frontman Liam Cormier making no effort to hide his enthusiasm when he spoke with HEAVY only hours ago."I'm still on this tour," he replied when asked if he was packed and ready for Australia yet, "so I have a bag of dirty laundry (laughs). I'm ready to go. I'll just put this in the wash, then repack my bags. I feel like this last bunch of touring we've been really busy, so it's almost like having a bag packed and ready to rip. That's how I've been living (laughs)."We ask Liam what has changed with Cancer Bats since their last visit down under."Last time we played, we had Wade MacNeil from Alexisonfire playing guitar with us," he offered. "Since then, we've had a couple of other folks on guitar duties, but now our homie Jackson (Landry) is gonna be shredding for both the Cancer Bats and Bat Sabbath shows. Australia will get to meet our new favourite… he calls us his Uncles because he's younger. He's like a 27-year-old little ripper."In the full interview, Liam talks more about Jackson and how he has slotted into the band, the response to Psychic Jailbreak from fans, the internal pressures the band put on themselves to improve on each album, keeping things fresh after seven albums and counting, taking Fangz as national support and the part Cancer Bats played in getting the band together, having local bands open in each city, the two Bat Sabbath shows and what to expect, what craziness Cancer Bats plan to bring and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Wade MacNeil of Alexisonfire over Zoom video.ALEXISONFIRE released Otherness, their long-anticipated and first full-length album in over 13 years. Otherness is arguably the band's most cohesive and self-actualized record to date, featuring impassioned anthems with earnest and deeply heartfelt lyrics, and impeccable vocal and musical performances from the iconic 5-piece. Up next is the visually stunning, dreamlike video for "Sans Soleil," which was shot in New Orleans and directed by longtime collaborator Michael Maxxis, who also directed "The Northern" and "Familiar Drugs." Watch the video for "Sans Soleil" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_FfwNPhZmg Guitarist/vocalist Wade MacNeil has described the song as "hanging onto hope during the heaviest times, healing and letting go. Dreaming of a future where all this hurt is behind you." "'Sans Soleil' is such a beautiful, haunting, mysterious, and uplifting song, and it immediately inspires a certain type of visual," explains Maxxis. "The idea was to make something that was opposite of that first flight of instinct that still possessed the same innate spirit. The process we undertook conceptualizing this video was one of the most unique and rewarding of my career." Otherness features 10 fresh, original songs, including the explosive first single, "Sweet Dreams Of Otherness," previously released banger "Reverse The Curse," and the hauntingly beautiful "Sans Soleil." The album was produced by AOF and mixed by punk stalwart Jonah Falco (Fucked Up, Chubby and the Gang). We want to hear from you! I get all kinds of pitches regarding guests for the podcast. I also pour over hundreds of hours of music that's sent to me. So when a publicist sends me a press release about a hardcore artist who has recently had a musical epiphany and is listening to the Grateful Dead while going through the roller coaster of life and recovering from addiction, I'm obviously intrigued. What makes this story even more unbelievable for me, is that Wade MacNeil, the artist who has created and fronts the Dooms Children project, lives here in Toronto, and at no time ever did I think a member of post punk hardcore outfit Alexisonfire or The Gallows would ever find his way on to our show. I mean, if anything, his band mate Dallas Green who is also City and Colour would be a better fit for the kind of music and musicians we feature on this show. Having said all that, I was intrigued enough by Wade's story and his cover of Friend of the Devil, to get him on the line to talk more about the project. My guest on this episode is Wade MacNeil wonderful human and musician known for his work not only in the bands Alexisonfire, Gallows, Black Lungs and his new endeavour Dooms Children, but also for his score work for various films and video games. We caught up recently to discuss the formation, dissolution and subsequent re-convening of Alexisonfire, a band that rose from Canada's sweaty bar room punk scene into full fledged Juno winning arena filling rock greatness. We talk about him becoming the singer for British punks Gallows, after the departure of frontman Frank Carter and we discuss the recent turbulent period in Wade's personal life that he overcame and led to the formation and recording of Dooms Children, a heavy psych folk project that see's him moving away (somewhat) from his punk rock roots. We also talk about the creative process and magick but that was always gonna happen wasn't it? Come on, you should know the score by now. If you don't then look back from some of the previous episodes are they're pretty rad, by and large. The first track from the self titled debut album 'Flower Moon' can be seen here and heres the link for the bands profile page on Dine Alone RecordsWade can be found here on instagram and it will be the best place to keep up to date with all his many works.Daniel can be found here and the podcasts instagram is here Follow either of those and I'll be overjoyed. Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Wade MacNeil of Alexisonfire and Gallows over Zoom video! Dine Alone Records released the original score for the Jay Baruchel-directed horror film Random Acts of Violence by Wade MacNeil (Alexisonfire, Gallows) and Andrew "Ango" Macpherson (Goon: Last of the Enforcers, Dark Side of the Ring).Having lent their talents to the Far Cry video game series, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege, and horror films like The Ranger (Shudder), MacNeil and Macpherson have created an ominous yet understated and unsettling style of electronica. Characterized by its atmospheric soundscapes and a pulsating, hypnotic edge, the score perfectly echoes the themes depicted in an uncompromising, visually stunning film."When you're scoring a film, you are creating a soundtrack for a world that doesn't exist," explains MacNeil. "Finding the sounds and melodies for that bleak stretch of rust belt highway in Random Acts was exhilarating. Choosing to forgo the traditional lead ups and teaser singles, Cancer Bats, with no forewarning, released Spark That Moves in its entirety on all digital services and are headed to Australia to share it with us live."Not to let the cat out of the bag but we have a super special guest filling in for Scott on guitar which we're way too excited about," revealed vocalist Liam Cormier. " Wade MacNeil from Alexisonfire is filling in for Scott while he is taking care of parental duties with his wife having a new baby so we're currently ripping across Canada getting road-ready for Australia.Cancer Bats are no strangers to this country, with Cormier gushing when asked to recall his fondest memories."Literally the wildest shows!" he enthused. "Some of the wildest shows we've played in our history have been in Australia in sweaty, packed, amazing clubs with people that are absolutely losing their minds. That's from the first time that we came with album one Birthing The Giant. We were like how do people even know about our band let alone have learned the lyrics and are annihilated and moshing so hard? We were like this country is so bad."In the full interview, Liam tells of the reception to The Spark That Moves, mixing genres, playing to your strengths, the early days of Cancer Bats, guest vocalists and how bands support each other, the possibility of Axewound - his collaboration with Matt Tuck from Bullet For My Valentine - releasing another album, and more.
