Dive headfirst into the surprisingly cutthroat world of luxury watch intellectual property battles where the stakes are as high as the price tags. From Swiss ateliers to Silicon Valley boardrooms, the gloves come off when horological heavyweights defend their creations against customizers, competitors, and counterfeiters alike. When does personalization cross into infringement? The Rolex cases against Artisans de Genève and Becker Time reveal the fine line between owning a watch and owning its identity. We explore how courts have split hairs over modified dials, aftermarket bezels, and what it truly means for a timepiece to be "genuine" in the eyes of trademark law. Meanwhile, Vortic's vintage Hamilton restoration saga offers hope for artisans who respect heritage while creating something new.The battlefield extends beyond physical watches into digital domains. Samsung faced Swatch Group's wrath over app store watch faces mimicking luxury dials, while Richemont convinced courts to make internet service providers block counterfeit websites altogether. Even tech giant Apple wasn't immune when Swatch cheekily registered "Tick Different" and "One More Thing" trademarks, leaving the Cupertino company with no choice but to rebrand their smartwatch.Perhaps most fascinating is Audemars Piguet's global quest to protect their revolutionary Royal Oak design—a struggle revealing how difficult it is to claim exclusive rights to shapes that have defined entire categories. And as watches evolve into health monitors, AliveCor's patent war against Apple Watch's ECG feature shows us what happens when traditional horology collides with cutting-edge medical technology.Whether you're a watch enthusiast, legal professional, or simply fascinated by the intersection of luxury and law, these cases illuminate five timeless principles governing intellectual property in the modern marketplace. Paul Schreiner began training Jiu-Jitsu in the late 1990s in Santa Cruz, California, under Claudio França and Garth Taylor. In the early 2000s, he spent significant time in Brazil, where he trained and competed extensively, becoming one of the few American athletes of that era to earn a podium finish at the World Championships held in Brazil. With over two decades of teaching experience, Paul spent 14 years at the Marcelo Garcia Academy in New York City, where he played a key role in developing one of the most successful teams in modern Jiu-Jitsu. As part of the MGJJ coaching staff, he helped guide athletes like Bernardo Faria and Dominyka Obelenyte—contributing to the academy becoming the first to produce World Champions in both the black belt weight and absolute divisions for men and women in the same year. Before his time at MGJJ, Paul taught at American Kickboxing Academy alongside Dave Camarillo, co-founded Kaijin MMA with Garth Taylor, and launched a Jiu-Jitsu program at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino.Known for his focused, thoughtful, and “non-denominational” approach to teaching, Paul continues to view Jiu-Jitsu as a lifelong, daily practice. Apple in China by Patrick McGee After struggling to build its products on three continents, Apple was lured by China's seemingly inexhaustible supply of cheap labor. Soon it was sending thousands of engineers across the Pacific, training millions of workers, and spending hundreds of billions of dollars to create the world's most sophisticated supply chain. These capabilities enabled Apple to build the 21st century's most iconic products—in staggering volume and for enormous profit. Without explicitly intending to, Apple built an advanced electronics industry within China, only to discover that its massive investments in technology upgrades had inadvertently given Beijing a power that could be weaponized. In Apple in China, journalist Patrick McGee draws on more than two hundred interviews with former executives and engineers, supplementing their stories with unreported meetings held by Steve Jobs, emails between top executives, and internal memos regarding threats from Chinese competition. The book highlights the unknown characters who were instrumental in Apple's ascent and who tried to forge a different path, including the Mormon missionary who established the Apple Store in China; the “Gang of Eight” executives tasked with placating Beijing; and an idealistic veteran whose hopes of improving the lives of factory workers were crushed by both Cupertino's operational demands and Xi Jinping's war on civil society. Apple in China is the sometimes disturbing and always revelatory story of how an outspoken, proud company that once praised “rebels” and “troublemakers”—the company that encouraged us all to “Think Different”—devolved into passively cooperating with a belligerent regime that increasingly controls its fate. The Good Father by Liam McIlvanney Gordon and Sarah Rutherford are normal, happy people with successful fulfilling lives. A son they adore, a house on the beach, a safe, friendly and honest community in a picture-postcard town on the Ayrshire coast. Until one day Bonnie the lab comes in from the beach alone. Their son Rory has just gone - the only trace left is a single black Adidas slider. Their lives don't fall apart immediately - while there's still hope (and no body) they can dig deep and try to carry on. Rather it's a process of abrasion, a wearing away of that happiness and normality; a slow degradation, a gradual breakdown - until they'll never be the people they were before. This sort of tragedy impacts a whole town - does the community still feel the same after? What are folk saying about you? Who are your friends? Who can you trust? When the worst thing has happened and you've lost everything, you either go under or you rebuild, start again. What could be worse than your child disappearing? In this episode of Transfigured, I sit down with Dr. Jim to delve into a range of pressing intellectual and spiritual topics. We explore his recent writings on his Substack, "Around the Corner," his perspective on the "re-enchantment" narrative currently popular in some online spaces, and a critical engagement with modernism. Using Carlos Eire's book "They Flew" (about the levitating St. Joseph of Cupertino) as a springboard, we discuss the nature of evidence, the moral responsibilities tied to metaphysical claims, and the vital role of institutions (like those in science, medicine, and education) in fostering self-correction and upholding human values. Dr. Jim shares his thoughts on the "scientific image" versus the "manifest image," the limitations of evolutionary biology's common framing, and why he considers himself a "reactionary modern," wary of prematurely discarding the hard-won insights of the Enlightenment and classical liberalism. Join us for a deep and nuanced conversation! We mention Dr. Jim, Sam (Transfigured), David Bentley Hart, Paul Vander Klay, Jonathan Pageau, John Vervaeke, Carlos Eire ("They Flew"), St. Joseph of Cupertino, Ross Douthat, Bart Ehrman, David Hume, Sam Harris, Wilfrid Sellars (Scientific Image vs. Manifest Image), Richard Dawkins, Bach, Mozart, Galileo, Michael Servetus, John Calvin, Rod Dreher, Bethel McGrew, Benjamin Boyce, Jesus Christ, Hermes, Chad (the Alcoholic), Julian, Aristotle (Four Causes), and more.Dr. Jim's Substack "Around the Corner": https://substack.com/@aroundthecorner1Midwest Apologetics Conference (August 22-24, Chicago, IL): https://www.midwestuary.com/Email for scholarship inquiries: info@midwestuary.com

¿Apple vuelve a ilusionar? Escúchalo y saca tus propias conclusiones.

The prevailing narrative about Apple in China over the last two decades is that the Cupertino company took advantage of low wages and weak labor laws to ship out close to half a billion devices per year. Journalist Patrick McGee says that narrative isn't wrong, but it misses “the biggest piece of the puzzle: that Beijing allowed Apple's activities so that China could exploit Apple and become a tech powerhouse in its own right.” We talk to McGee about his new book “Apple in China” and the threats the company faces from AI and the Trump administration. Apple, like all successful companies, became successful by maximizing profits and minimizing costs. However, to achieve this, they sold their soul to America's biggest adversary: the Chinese Communist Party. The story of how this transpired is chronicled in exceptional detail by my guest, Patrick McGee, who joins me to discuss his book “Apple in China: The Capture of the World's Greatest Company” and explains whether or not he believes Trump can return manufacturing to America. - - - Today's Sponsor: Balance of Nature - Go to https://balanceofnature.com and use promo code KLAVAN for 35% off your first order PLUS get a free bottle of Fiber and Spice.

Apple in China: The Capture of the World's Greatest Company by Patrick McGee Amazon.com For readers of Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs and Chris Miller's Chip War, a riveting look at how Apple helped build China's dominance in electronics assembly and manufacturing only to find itself trapped in a relationship with an authoritarian state making ever-increasing demands. After struggling to build its products on three continents, Apple was lured by China's seemingly inexhaustible supply of cheap labor. About the author Patrick McGee led Apple coverage at the Financial Times from 2019 to 2023 and won a San Francisco Press Club Award for his coverage of the company. He joined the newspaper in 2013, in Hong Kong, before reporting from Germany and California. His reporting in the last decade has centered on upheavals in technology, including autonomous cars, electric vehicles, and major developments in the supply chain. Previously, he was a bond reporter at the Wall Street Journal. He received a Master's in Global Diplomacy from SOAS, University of London, where his thesis focused on the US military budget and competition with China. He has also a degree in Religious Studies from the University of Toronto. Originally from Calgary, Canada, he and his family make their home in the Bay Area. Patrick is a keen runner, reader of history, and traveller.
Looking to move closer to your tech job at Google, Apple, Meta, or Nvidia? This new video breaks down the BEST neighborhoods in the Bay Area for couples and families working in Big Tech — whether your budget is under $2M or over $4M.Using an interactive map, Spencer shows how to align your commute, school quality, and home type — so you can make the smartest move without wasting time or energy.

In this episode of Grumpy Old Geeks, we're serving up a buffet of dystopia with a side of snark. First, Kuwait has finally realized crypto bros are an energy drain, not a feature. Celsius Network's founder gets 12 years for running a “safe investment” Ponzi scheme. And in Lopez v. Apple, we find yet another reason to question Cupertino's moral compass. Then it's time for a trip through the tech trash fire. DoorDash gobbles up Deliveroo, proving there's no such thing as too many overpriced salads. Google wants your kids to befriend Gemini—because what could go wrong giving tweens supervised AI access? Tesla's “Robotaxi” trademark gets the boot for being as generic as Elon's pickup lines. Meanwhile, Grok strips in public, deepfake porn sites get the axe, and dating app “Raw” rawdogs user data like it's the early 2000s internet. We also hit peak Black Mirror with brain-typed tweets, AI-resurrected relatives, and crypto kidnappers playing real-life GTA.On Media Candy, the streaming overlords dump trailers like Halloween candy. Squid Game is back to traumatize you, Star Trek: Lower Decks keeps boldly going where no animated series should, and The Old Guard 2 teases a Theron-vs-Thurman sword fight. Plus, Apple's UX team found the “enhance” button, Netflix wants to be helpful (lol), and Google dreams of becoming a Hollywood darling. Over in Apps & Doodads, Apple wants to stagger iPhone drops, Disney sells you a $3,000 droid with zero sass, and Smart Flowerpots are now a thing because apparently, you can't be trusted to water your plant. And finally, it's time for The Dark Side with Dave, where Bittner brings us malware, click tracks, fake vocals, and the shocking truth about KISS's lipsync disaster in Antwerp. We also dip into ILM's jaw-dropping legacy, Star Wars' shady back alleys, and a new Disneyland in Abu Dhabi, because nothing says “happiest place on Earth” like 120°F desert heat. A lot of things in the South Bay, specifically around Cupertino and Mountain View, are named after somebody called Stevens. There's Stevens Creek Boulevard, the Stevens Creek watershed, and Stevens Creek Reservoir, to name a few. Our question asker, Pete Smoot, wants to know: Who exactly was Stevens? Turns out we should really be asking: "Who was Stephens?" with a P-H! We've been misspelling the name of Elisha Stephens for decades.
