This episode contains sensitive material. Parental discretion is advised. Sometimes, all it takes is a helping hand and a push in the right direction. Tune in to today's episode of On the Spot and hear how Mary was inspired to open the Shelter Children's Home in Kenya. Growing up, Mary lived in a rural home in Kenya. She did a lot of church work and believed that she was meant to help other people. With the help of her grandmother, she began to pursue a cause she grew to become passionate about. [4:57] “And my grandmother comes to this idea that: can we keep 10 children in a house and we take care of them and see what we can be? And so that was a lifetime thing. We said ‘Yes we want many women.’ We can try. And so we didn’t settle with 10, we settled with 25. So it became - Initially - it was like just an extracurricular activity, but now it had become a program. It becomes a commitment. It becomes a responsibility.” Having to learn everything from scratch - from public speaking, to managing organizations, to fundraising - can be a daunting challenge, but the challenge is worth it. Mary fights for people and actively works to make an impact in the world through bringing awareness to cruel treatment of girls. [18:30] “Groom yourself, wake up feeling strong and feeling energetic, put on your lipstick, do your hair, and walk out in confidence because the more confident they are, the more ready they are to face the world and to do what needs to be done.” Through providing girls with the resources they need to be healthy and successful and the encouragement to pursue what they are passionate about, they can blossom into something special and forge their own path. Women need to take control of their own finances and look out for their own goals instead of relying on the men in their lives. “Women are making 85% of those financial decisions. They are actively engaged in the big purchases, right? If there is a minivan to be bought, they are there. On today's episode of On The Spot, we sit down with Jillian Bullock, a filmmaker, president and CEO of Jillian Bullock Enterprises, a film and video production company based in Philadelphia. Jillian works to bring change through producing, writing, and directing shows that are empowering, educational, and entertaining. When Jillian was a child, her mother married a white man in the Italian mafia. Jillian and her siblings were the only black kids in their neighborhood and were surrounded by mobsters growing up. Her stepfather introduced her to film and they often watched movies together. His dream was the be a filmmaker, and Jillian took on that dream as her own after he passed when she was only 15 years old. Her mother eventually remarried, but her new husband was physically abusive. Jillian was kicked out by her mother and lived on the streets at the age of 15 after defending her. In order to escape homelessness, Jillian was forced to get involved with prostitution to get off the streets. After getting pregnant at 16, Jillian went back to Philadelphia, went back to school, eventually graduated from high school, and got a college degree. ”You have to have some resilience inside yourself to fight and come out of the depths of hell.” “There’s another side, and there’s reasons why people do what they do, so you need to explore that as a filmmaker. That’s what I try to do.” As a black woman, Jillian feels very fortunate as she has not experienced much discrimination as a result of her race in the film industry. She believes it’s because of the way she carries herself, and being surrounded by mobsters as a child greatly contributed to this. Jillian often tells women that they need to teach their daughters to be confident at a young age. Jillian recommends that women get mentors as it made a world of difference in her life. She learned the ins and outs of what was necessary for her to become a successful reporter. Jillian also watches many videos and looks up to motivational people, especially people who have struggled and lived a rough life. She sees how they overcame their struggles and built their own empires and learns from them. People should look up to people whose experiences resonate with them. Key takeaways: ”Life is hard, but the thing is they have to find a path that works with them, meaning that they need to associate themselves with people who are positive and who can uplift them. And they have to get rid of people that are negative distractors, and haters, and people who are not supporting them. And that can be your family members. It could be your spouse. It could be whoever. You know, to me life is too short. It is just too short to be going through life unhappy and just not living your fullest potential and being successful and obtaining your greatness.” ”Just the fact that you opened your eyes and you’re breathing, that’s a great thing, a thing to be grateful for.” ICYMI: Check out our daily newsletter and podcast Four Minutes With On The Dot! This one-day event explores the issued of bullying, body image and being a girl. "I think that raising another human being is probably the greatest calling that another human being can have. I think it’s also the hardest job I’ve ever had. And the most thankless." Lolis earned her BA in Liberal Arts and her BS in Communications, and one of her first jobs was as a radio host for a radio show called "The Ladies Room with Lolis." She thought there was something missing in the radio community: a woman's touch. Because she lived in both Mexico and the US, Lolis has a strong understanding of the Latino culture and its impact on mainstream society. "For me, the superpower for women is to see the big picture." Key Takeaways: "I do think that women have this unique ability to see the world through the prism of what’s good for my family, what good for my community, what’s good for the world." You can purchase the book Lolis mentions, Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls, here on Amazon! When we discovered one of our own, Rhys, had never seen one second of STARGATE and was forever left out of our in-jokes throwback references, the rest of the team decided to rediscover it with him and breakdown the series one episode at a time.
