Aisyah Rafaee - 2x Olympic Rower on Comebacks, Mental Strength & Redefining High Performance in Your 30s

Tough Girl Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2026 46:39

In this episode of the Tough Girl Podcast, we're joined by Aisyah Rafaee – a two-time Olympic rower from Singapore who competed at the Rio 2016 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the single scull. After taking an eight-year break from the sport, Aisyah made the bold decision to return—qualifying for Paris 2024 as one of the oldest athletes in the field and redefining what it means to be a high-performing athlete in your 30s. Originally from Singapore and now based in Boston, USA, Aisyah grew up with four brothers and discovered rowing after being scouted during an indoor competition at school. With limited rowing culture and opportunities in Singapore, she carved her own path—training overseas in Sydney, qualifying through a fiercely competitive Asian selection process, and representing Singapore on the world stage. But her journey hasn't been linear. From struggling with pressure at her first Olympics to working with mental skills coach Hansen Bay, from stepping away from elite sport to rediscovering her love for movement, from fracturing her ribs a month before Paris to qualifying with just six months to go—this is a powerful conversation about identity, resilience, vulnerability, and growth. Now working as a HYDROW Athlete and Mental Performance Coach with 3HP Athlete Coaching, Aisyah shares insights on: Building confidence and resilience Letting go of expectations Separating identity from performance The realities of returning to elite sport after time away Training and mindset during pregnancy Why rowing is a lifelong sport Her philosophy of the 3Hs: Happy, Healthy & High Performing This episode is about trusting your timing, embracing new chapters, and asking yourself: Is this smart for me? Aisyah's story is proof that it's never "too late" to chase a dream — and that high performance can evolve with you. ***  New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! Make sure to subscribe so you never miss the inspiring journeys and incredible stories of tough women pushing boundaries.  Do you want to support the Tough Girl Mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media in the world of adventure and physical challenges? Support via Patreon! In this episode of the Brown Women Health Podcast, Ritika and Mariam sit down with Dr. Sara Tariq, an internal medicine physician with over two decades of experience in clinical care, medical education, and health advocacy. Together, we explore what it means to navigate healthcare systems as a South Asian woman—both as a patient and as a physician—and the often invisible biases that shape those experiences.Dr. Tariq shares how her personal and professional journey led her to challenge systemic inequities in medicine, from academic culture to clinical practice. We dive into how medical training environments can reinforce (or disrupt) bias, and what that means for the future of patient care and physician identity. The conversation also highlights her work in women's health, mental health, and LGBTQ+ care, emphasizing a relationship-centered approach that prioritizes empathy, cultural understanding, and patient empowerment. For students and early-career professionals, this episode offers thoughtful reflections on advocacy, identity, and the kind of change our healthcare systems truly need.Whether you're interested in health equity, medical education reform, or simply learning how lived experiences shape better care, this is a conversation you won't want to miss.

You know, being feminine in my mind was associated with being submissive, skilled in the kitchen, or dressing up super girly... and while I think they're great qualities too, I just don't necessarily see myself that way. Needless to say, I always feel surprised yet intrigued when my girlfriends tell me, "You're one of the most feminine women that I've known," or like how this conversation I had with Tyler Rohoblt in DC started because she told me that she wanted to learn more about how to cultivate the "divine femininity" which she saw in me, when this was only the second time that we had met!

In this episode, Li Ling Yung, the first Southeast Asian woman to swim the English Channel, and Jeremy Au discussed Li Ling's endurance swimming journey: 1. Li Ling's Childhood and Athletic Journey: Li Ling recalled securing bronze and silver as a competitive Singaporean swimmer in her childhood before moving on to other sports and hobbies. She moved to London at 19 for studies and rekindled her interest in sports in her mid-twenties due to the endurance sports culture in finance. She talked about how she started open-water swimming on the UK and later joined the Hong Kong community of swimmers, where they swim year-round even in winter when temperatures drop significantly. 2. Swimming the English Channel: Li Ling described the surreal experience of being the first Southeast Asian woman to swim across the English Channel. She emphasized the mental strength needed, particularly towards the end of the swim where she had to overcome strong currents and personal doubts. She focused on short-term goals, like reaching the next feed every half an hour, rather than the total 13 hours spent swimming. Supported by her friends and husband, she persevered and pushed through her limits to eventually swim 34km onto the shores of France. 3. Charitable Work: Li Ling and her husband chose to relocate to Hong Kong to be closer to family and friends. She shared her involvement as a volunteer coach at Splash Foundation and raised $50,000 to teach swimming to underserved communities in Singapore and Hong Kong, including migrant workers and children with special needs. They also discussed the casual athletes' intense training routines, the role of community in achieving challenging objectives, and endurance swimming dynamics. Thomas Merton—an eternal seeker, dislocated immigrant, and sojourner—left his mark on an Asian woman who was seeking a spiritual adventure. In many borderlands, the virgin points, Merton's hidden yet honest struggle inspire a deep connection with the immigrant woman in exile. Through a personal narrative of sojourning, an emphasis begins to manifest that her religious life began in Korea and found home in the US, contrasting Merton's journey of finding a home in Asia. Dancing with Thomas Merton led the woman to see her true self, beyond the East and West. Transformation occurs at the borderland, a space of encounter, struggle, writing, and contemplation. Jung Eun Sophia Park, SNJM, is associate professor at Holy Names University in California. She loves to give retreats, spiritual directions, and workshops in U.S. and other countries. Her academic interests are global justice and spirituality, shamanism, postcolonial feminism, and mysticism. Sophia has authored many books, including A Hermeneutic on Dislocation as Experience: Creating a Hybrid Identity, Constructing a Borderland Community, Conversations at the Well: Emerging Religious Life in the 21st Century Global World, Border-Crossing Spirituality: Transformation in the Borderland, and An Asian Woman's Religious Journey with Thomas Merton: Journey to the East/Journey to the West. She also wrote books in Korean, including Thoughtful Chats: How the Story Changed Women, Time Jor Sorrow, Beauty of the Broken, Seasons that I loved, Joy of Life, and For the Broken Humanities. She also writes articles on ordinary spirituality at the Korean Catholic News and offers women's spirituality lessons through YouTube.

On this week's episode, I chat to the wonderful Faiza Shaheen, author of Know Your Place, which is part-memoir, and part-research-based analysis about class in the UK. In the book, Faiza discusses her own working-class background, and the effects of austerity on her family, especially her mother who was relying on benefits due to her health. She breaks down the very many things in society which helped her to graduate from the University of Oxford, including a state-school system with good teachers, a welfare state system, and free universal healthcare. But she also breaks down how a person from a working class background has to work up to 4,000 times harder to succeed, due to the structure of our system. We explore some big questions about social justice, social mobility and equality and fairness in the UK, talking about Faiza's political career, research and insights. We break down what we really mean by social mobility, and what really matters when it comes to representation in government. Dr. Faiza Shaheen is an economist, writer, and commentator. She is the author of a range of materials and publications covering the most salient social and economic debates of our times, including inequality, austerity, immigration, youth unemployment and social mobility. Faiza has over 15 years of experience researching the trends and consequences of inequality, as well as designing policies and campaigns to address the causes of inequality and exclusion. In 2017, Faiza was named the Observer Rising Star for Campaigning, nominated as Asian Woman of the Year and included in the Top 100 Influencers on the Left list in the UK.As always, I'd love to hear what you think of this conversation! Sheritha Jones is the Chief Librarian and Columnist with the Omaha World Herald. Her column: “Privilege is a problem, and a solution involves everyone”, released July 17, 2022, is a powerful piece that highlights her experience with race from childhood to motherhood. Far too often we are afraid to have open and honest race conversations, not only as human beings but also as parents. Angee, Jaime and guest Sheritha Jones talk about what it was like growing up in the “colorless” 80's and 90's to now raising children within a colorful world. As an Asian woman, Jaime speaks about her experiences being confronted with people commenting on “how well she speaks English”, becoming agitated when she doesn't speak Japanese, Chinese, or any other Asian language, or viewing her as nothing more than a sexual object of desire. As a Black woman, raising three children including two teenage boys, Sheritha explains the conversations she has with her boys about immediately removing their hoodies when entering public places such as a convenience store or looking directly into security cameras so as not to be viewed as a threat. In addition, if they are driving or passengers, where to put their hands so they are visible and the best way to comply so they don't get shot. As a White woman, Angee emphasizes the discomfort other white people often have with the term “White Privilege” and white listeners to see the positive influence they can have by embracing the lived experiences of persons of color while emphasizing the importance of continuing those conversations with the next generation. No matter what perspective you come from, you won't regret joining the very raw conversations about how race impacts each one of us on different levels. We invite you to continue the conversation and let us know how race has impacted your life! Remember, we are all human beings with feelings so this is an opportunity to speak your truth with love for yourself and your journey moving forward, not hate for another's journey. As I come closer to 24 months of podcast episodes for Sexy Ageing, it feels like my list of questions are getting longer! one of the BIG questions is "How are women in other countries, cultures and belief systems managing their menopause?" A very general question that has a lot to unpack! In this episode, I'm starting with South Asian women and I interviewed Dr Shashi Prasad, an Indian Hindu rational living and working in the UK. Dr Shashi is a very experienced GP, British Menopause Society accredited Advanced Menopause Specialist and Board- Certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician. She has worked in the NHS and privately for many years providing a high standard of care to her patients. During her work as a GP, she noted a huge unmet need for good quality menopause care. This motivated her to start her journey as a menopause specialist and complete her training from King's College Hospital, one of the leading menopause centres in the UK. In this episode, we discuss: * Dr Shashi's motivation to train as a menopause specialist * The differences for women in ethnic minorities accessing information, having conversation and support from their doctors. * Dr Shashi's personal experience with menopause and the incidence of South Asian women seeking her help. * The higher risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes in South Asian women and how menopause symptoms affect midlife health. * The complete lack of resources in Hindi language - is there a menopause symptom tracker for other languages? * The main menopause symptoms of South Asian women. I'm looking forward to speaking with more women on the topic of Race, Culture and Menopause for a more inclusive conversation. In a break with tradition, the Charlotte City Council rejected the top votainer and named the second-place finisher as the next Mayor Pro Tem. And, yes, votainer is a word I have invented and am promoting to replace the awkwardly cumbersome "top vote-getter." For almost three decades the Charlotte City Council has named the top votainer in the At-Large election to the post of Mayor Pro Tem - except on two occasions. But last night the Democrats passed over the top votainer, Dimple Ajmera, to name Braxton Winston as the Mayor Pro Tem. Why? Nobody will really say. Also, Councilman James "Smuggie" Mitchell was sworn-in despite questions about whether his presence on the Council is illegal. Mitchell says he owns 25% of a local construction firm named RJ Leeper. As a minority-owned business, the company gets City contracts worth millions of dollars. State law seems to prevent Mitchell from being on the body that awards those contracts. Mitchell refused to address the matter with reporters after the swearing-in ceremony.  Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After graduating from college, she began looking for roles in HR.-Daisy did well as an SDR in San Francisco, so they moved her to a team lead position in New York. In New York, she moved into management and then moved to LA for an Account Executive role.-Her manager then joined Orum, and she followed. She's now an Account Executive there.Being an Asian Woman in Sales-It can be lonely. Daisy's been in the profession for years now and has only encountered three other Asian women in sales.-However, this can be an advantage. Because there aren't many people who look like her, she's much more memorable when selling or pitching a product.Open Doors-Race, sex, age, or religious discrimination comes in when trying to enter the sales industry without any experience or competing for a management position.-However, you can't dispute results and numbers. And, this gives an advantage when interviewing at other companies.Going Against Culture Norms-Asian culture promotes listening and teaches to be humble and follow the rules. But, in SaaS or tech sales, it's essential to talk about yourself to be noticed for a promotion. Great work often gets done behind the scenes, and it goes unnoticed unless it gets vocalized to management.-Many Asian cultures also value prestige, pushing professions like engineering or medicine to the forefront. How Her Background Makes Her Better-A lot was expected of Daisy, being raised by a “tiger mom.” And, this instilled a drive in her to achieve. -There was also an emphasis placed on education. Because many Asian immigrant parents had education taken away from them, they know the importance of it. And, though she now has the freedom to choose how she spends her time, she knows the importance of continuing to learn and grow.Unlearning-There were also many things she had to unlearn. One of them being the concept of comparison. A big part of Asian culture is comparing yourself to others. However, this adds a lot of unneeded stress and takes away from your self-worth.-Instead, Daisy focuses on competing with herself, making sure she's the best salesperson she can be.Outreach to Underrepresented Communities-When it comes to getting more underrepresented communities involved in sales, highlighting people from those groups that have found success is extremely important.-University recruiters also play a role. Going into communities of underrepresented groups and educating on what sales is could open many doors.Resources-Anti-racism resources to support Asian American, Pacific Islander community-Rise of Anti-Asian Hate Crimes-Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert KiyosakiConnect With Daisy-LinkedIn-YouTubeSend in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/othersideofsales/m
