The STEM Pipeline Isn't Fair. Here's Why That Still Matters with CEO of Techbridge Girls Savita Raj

As we announced last week, this month on That Tech Pod, we're changing things up a bit. Instead of our usual deep dives into eDiscovery, data privacy, and cyber security, this December, we're spotlighting people and organizations using technology to close real gaps in opportunity. In this episode, we sit down with Savita Raj, the CEO of Techbridge Girls, to talk about what it really takes to help girls from underrepresented communities see themselves in STEM. Savita cuts through the buzzwords to explain why the pipeline problem is still very real in 2025, even as AI races ahead, and why access is about far more than programs. It's transportation, time, family expectations, early exposure, and a sense of belonging. The conversation gets candid about the gap between industry rhetoric on diversity and who actually makes it through. Savita shares what funders and tech leaders often miss about hidden barriers, and why the rise of AI and automation makes sustained investment in programs like Techbridge Girls more urgent than ever.If you want to support Techbridge Girls, you can donate directly at https://www.techbridgegirls.org/donate to help bring high-quality STEM experiences to girls from underrepresented communities, or explore ways to get involved like volunteering, mentoring, or partnering at https://www.techbridgegirls.org/get-involved to make a more hands-on impact.Savita Raj, is the CEO of Techbridge Girls. Techbridge Girls is a nonprofit focused on opening doors to STEM for girls from underrepresented communities through hands-on learning, mentorship, and exposure to real-world careers. The organization works closely with schools and industry partners to help girls build confidence, skills, and a lasting sense that they belong in science and technology. Savita has decades-long experience in leadership, strategy, and fundraising focused on creating equitable STEM programs in underserved communities. An engineer by training, Savita has served as the Chief Program Officer for Girl Scouts of the USA and as the Executive Director for the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering. She lives in Austin and enjoys traveling, reading, sewing, and baking.

Since then, her organization Kindness In A Diverse Society (KIDS) has focused on the mission of "kids helping kids" - providing wellness care, physical/mental wellness resources, educational assistance, mentorship, and more. Their programs are in practice in schools, colleges, through community organizations like the Girl Scouts, and various service and philanthropy organizations. Their social media outreach promotes what they do, where their services are available, and how people can get involved -- by choosing and practicing kindness, care, and compassion, and seeing that influence extend to others. But a few years later, Farrell found an escape from bullying, the promise of sisterhood, a rising sense of confidence, adventure, and—best of all—lifelong friendship when she joined a Girl Scout troop. Getting Unstuck - Shift For Impact

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 9, 2025 36:07

Guest Leah Ellis is a mom of four, writer, wedding officiant, Girl Scout leader, and founder of The Society of Child Entrepreneurs. Her life blends family, creativity, and leadership, from giggling over business plans at the breakfast table to mentoring kids through hands-on entrepreneurship. With her children as her compass, Leah is reminded daily that growth is messy, love is work, and compassion changes everything. Through SoCE, Nerdy Nuptials ICT, and Girl Scouts, she creates spaces where kids, couples, and communities are empowered to lead with authenticity. Leah believes in making room for both the mess and the magic of becoming. Melody Ellis is a young artist, child entrepreneur, and community leader who blends creativity, curiosity, and confidence in everything she does. As one of the first members of The Society of Child Entrepreneurs, Melody has grown up alongside SoCE, learning how to turn ideas into action through real-world business experiences. From designing artwork and products to helping at events, she leads with imagination and heart. Guided by creativity and compassion, Melody is learning that growth takes courage, mistakes are part of the journey, and kids are capable of amazing things right now. Through SoCE, Girl Scouts, and her own creative ventures, Melody is already making her mark as a leader in the making.     Summary This episode explores how Leah Ellis and her daughter, Melody, turned a four-year-old's curiosity into a thriving business and, ultimately, a youth entrepreneurship movement. When the pandemic forced Leah to close her daycare, she pivoted into financial coaching—training that Melody absorbed from the living-room TV. Soon, Melody announced she wanted to start a business, launching a contact-free drip-art venture at age four. As her work grew, Leah recognized the need for a community of young entrepreneurs. She created the Society of Child Entrepreneurs, a structured program teaching business skills, financial literacy, adaptability, and leadership through hands-on experience. Kids learn pricing, budgeting, opportunity cost, and problem-solving, culminating in selling their products publicly. The conversation highlights extraordinary creativity—like kids designing a robot to stop porch pirates—and the confidence that grows when adults step back and ask questions rather than set limits. Leah also discusses the proposed "SoCE Law" to ease restrictions on kids starting businesses. Throughout, Melody reflects on how entrepreneurship has made her more adaptable, expressive, and willing to share her work. Together, they illustrate what happens when young people are empowered to build real businesses. The Essential Point The core message is that children are far more capable than adults often assume. Creativity, business sense, and problem-solving emerge naturally when they are given space, the ability to ask questions, and trust. Leah rejects the idea that "kids are the future," arguing instead that they are powerful now. By letting kids start real businesses, handle real challenges, and make real decisions, the Society of Child Entrepreneurs helps them develop confidence, adaptability, and an entrepreneurial mindset that carries into every part of their lives. The Girl Scouts have always held a special place in Elicia Pegues Spearman's life. “My mother was a Girl Scout Brownie when she was growing up,” Pegues Spearman told the CBIA BizCast. “I was a Brownie here in Connecticut, and my daughter was a Girl Scout, and I was a coach, troop leader.” Despite that history, Pegues Spearman never imagined leading Girl Scouts of Connecticut. “I've enjoyed my career as a lawyer,” she said. “I've had a really good career.” Her career included legal counsel and HR roles at the State of Connecticut, the FBI, Aetna, Hubbell Incorporated, General Dynamics Electric Boat, and Quinnipiac University. She reconnected with Girl Scouts in 2022 when she received a Breakfast Badge, an award honoring woman for community contributions. She stayed in touch with the then-CEO and, in 2024, became CEO herself. “The Girl Scouts is a lot of fun,” she said about making the career shift. “I don't like to be bored.” While cookies often come to mind when you think of the Girl Scouts—it's the organization's biggest initiative teaching entrepreneurship, customer service, and money management—the organization's purpose runs deeper. “We are more than cookies, camps and badges,” Pegues Spearman said. “Our whole mission is to build girls of confidence, character, and courage. “To do that, we have many programs and skill building that build leadership development that our girls are involved in.” Pegues Spearman said the Girl Scouts of Connecticut focus on outdoor skills, life skills, business skills, and STEAM education. Pegues Spearman highlighted Camp Sikorsky and Camp CEO as examples of programs that give girls experiential learning opportunities. The Girl Scouts of Connecticut focus on outdoor skills, life skills, business skills, and STEAM education. “I just feel like we're giving them the secrets to success earlier on in their lives,” Pegues Spearman said. “They kind of have a roadmap about what it means to be successful.” One of the best parts, she said, is watching girls interact and grow in confidence. “Seeing that sparkle in their eye and that like, ‘wow, I just did that,'” she said. As the leader of a nonprofit, Pegues Spearman said being successful means navigating challenges. “I think the biggest challenge is obviously resources. We're a nonprofit. We have tight budgets, and we depend on volunteers,” she said. Pegues Spearman credits her team of paid employees and volunteers for the success of the organization. “My staff loves our mission, and we work every day with that mission in mind,” she said. “It's easy when you're supporting youth.” As part of its mission, the Girl Scouts of Connecticut is working to expand access for girls of all abilities and backgrounds, with a special focus on underserved communities. “We want all girls of all abilities to be able to access Girl Scouts,” she said. In addition to her role with the Girl Scouts, Pegues Spearman serves as the North Atlantic Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The sorority is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women. Pegues Spearman said she finds natural alignment between her work with the sorority and her role with the Girl Scouts. “Being the leader of the Girl Scouts, going to an all-women's college, being in an all-women's sorority—it's natural for me to be involved with girls and youth,” she said. “This is my special passion—to mentor girls and have them be their best and have them try things they would have never tried.” Related Links: Girl Scouts of Connecticut Website: https://www.gsofct.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/gsofct/ Elicia Pegues Spearman LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eliciaspearman/ CBIA Website: https://www.cbia.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cbia/

Tonight on The Mark White Show, I'm joined by Nicky Wilson and her daughter, Girl Scout Abby Wilson. Abby recently completed a remarkable Silver Award project that brought the Madison City community together in a big way. What began as a simple request for neighbors to save their plastic lids grew into a collection of 650 pounds of recyclable material. Thanks to the generosity of local families and fire stations who served as drop off points, those lids were transformed into two buddy benches and two toddler picnic tables. Nicky and Abby will share how the project came together, why it mattered, and how other civic groups can do something similar. It's a great example of leadership, service, and the power of community support.

Shannon's advice? Don't wait—use your resources to create memories and make an impact now. Money is a tool, not just something to be hoarded for “someday.”Running a business doesn't have to run your life.Without a business partner who holds you accountable, it's easy to be so busy ‘doing' business that you don't have the right strategy to grow your business.Stop letting your business run you. Katy Talento offers these actionable steps: Prioritize Water & Sleep: Invest in affordable water filters (like Berkey or reverse osmosis) and unplug wifi devices at night to lower the impact of environmental hazards. Rethink Processed Foods: Aim to stick to whole, organic foods along the outer aisles of the grocery store, avoiding processed items riddled with chemicals and microplastics. Be Mindful with Children: Focus on breastfeeding and simple, homemade blended foods for babies to reduce exposure to heavy metals and sugar found in commercial baby foods. Clean the Cleaners: Swap chemical-laden household cleaners for simple vinegar and water. Avoid products with artificial fragrances—both in cleaning supplies and personal care. Watch What's on Your Skin: If you wouldn't eat it, don't put it on your skin! Opt for natural solutions like coconut oil, shea butter, or tallow. Final Wisdom from Katy Talento: Don't let the sheer number of toxins make you freeze; start small. Begin with one manageable change—perhaps your water source or what you put on your skin—and build from there. Remember, every small step brings you and your family closer to better health. We're bringing back this powerful conversation as a replay because the message is still exactly what you need to hear if you're feeling called to something more in your career or business. Join Monique as she dives into the art of self-persuasion and the importance of recognizing your inherent worthiness. She challenges you to shift your mindset from external validations to embracing your internal power, urging you to ask yourself: Who do I need to be to make the changes I desire?By understanding the narratives you create around your ambitions and the social contracts you feel bound to, you can begin to dismantle the barriers that prevent you from stepping into your fullest potential. When you move with confidence in who you are and what you stand for, it's magnetic. You are powerful. You are worthy. You can make that pivot and this replay is your reminder.GEMS DROPPED“Setting yourself up for success is either code for, “I want to make sure that I make a move that protects me from failure” or “how do I make sure I'm set up for it is what will finally make me worthy of the success?” So one is about,  I want to make sure that I have collected all of the Girl Scout badges, and the other is about I've put on enough armor to protect myself. Both of those buckets are a way of thinking that has been handed down to us through traditional career building in corporate structures and neither of those models is going to get you to your intrinsic vision”“The social contracts that you make with people, they do exist. When we build up different brands, or even just professional reputations in people's minds, they exist, …people need to be able to hold you in their imaginations as something, we need to make sense of each other. But those brands, those reputations are not built on the specific configuration of what you do and how you do it in the world. They're not built upon the specific titles that you carry, and the specific strengths and skills that you have and how those things specifically come together. That's not actually the bedrock, they're a part of it, for sure, but the bedrock of those social contracts, and the way that people are carrying us in their minds… is trust”.“People are not thinking about us as much as we think they are. we're caught up in our own stuff y'all, like the same way that you're just trying to stay on top of all the basic necessities of your life in all the big questions of your life. That's what everybody else is doing, too.” “...things that you think you need to have… all of the shiny objects that you need to collect… all of the people, all of the authorities that need to approve of you before you can make this step, you don't have to be set up in that way for success. The way that we set ourselves up for these pivots. The ways that we prepare ourselves to make these kinds of pivots is by going internal into making some decisions and making some shifts around how we are relating to ourselves, which then carry out to how we move. When we move with that kind of energy, you become magnetic…'STAY IN TOUCHCome and follow me on Instagram @moniquershields and I would love your feedback so send an email to ambition@moniquershields.com.

Ironically, it all started with the Girl Scouts. When Marit Molin couldn't find a scout troop for her daughter on the east end, she started her own. Now, many years later, she is the ultimate girl scout. Marit's organization is called Hamptons Community Outreach. Their mission is simple. If someone in our community needs something, Marit and her team find a way to fill the need. Sometimes it's fixing a roof, or a floor, or a heating system. Sometimes it's finding housing to begin with. It's always about providing food-- her operation handles 20 tons of food at a time and distributes it to those who need it. More and more, it's helping young people get the resources they need to succeed in school-- things like tutoring, supplies, college counseling and the like. It's shocking to many of us how much need there is in this community, particularly with the backdrop of so much abundance and even excess. But the need is there, and Marit, her organization and their volunteers, are there to help bridge the gap. Her story is amazing, but what she manages to do, and how much she and her group provide is nothing short of fascinating. So tune in and hear her story of starting a girl scout troop, and becoming a grown up girl scout gone nuclear

Break 1: Kia Mall of Georgia STORY 1: The Sandwich Project celebrates milestones and welcomes new executive director Before the latest government shutdown even hit, the Sandwich Project was already out there—quietly, relentlessly—feeding Atlanta’s hungry. This grassroots nonprofit, born in the chaos of 2020, has now delivered over 2.2 million sandwiches across metro Atlanta. Two million sandwiches. Let that sink in. And now, they’ve got their first executive director: Christine Cooper Nowicki, a longtime volunteer with a heart for service. “This wasn’t something I saw coming,” she admits, “but food insecurity has always been personal for me.” Every week, volunteers—families, Girl Scouts, Rotary Clubs—make 8,000 sandwiches. It’s messy, beautiful, and life-changing work. Learn more at thesandwichproject.org. STORY 2: Norcross receives international award for branding efforts Norcross just snagged a Silver Davey Award—pretty impressive, right? Out of 2,000+ global entries, this small-but-mighty city was recognized for its killer branding and communication efforts in the Government and Municipal category. The secret sauce? A partnership with Lawrenceville’s Accent Creative Group, the creative minds behind Norcross’ ads, event logos, social media, and more. “Our brand isn’t just a look,” said Mayor Craig Newton. “It’s how we tell our story.” The Davey Awards celebrate big ideas on small budgets, and Norcross nailed it—showcasing a community alive with culture, creativity, and connection. Not bad for a little city with big heart. STORY 3: Elementary and middle school cellphone bans proving popular, as debate moves to high schools Georgia high schools might soon say goodbye to cellphones, following the success of bans already in place at some schools. Starting next fall, a new law will require elementary and middle schools to lock up phones during the day. High schools aren’t included—yet. But with 92% of teachers supporting the idea, according to a Georgia Southern University survey, the push is gaining momentum. At Lakeside High in DeKalb, Principal Susan Stoddard said banning phones was a game-changer: “You heard kids talking again—actual conversations in the hallways.” Still, some parents worry about emergencies. The State Ethics Commission says it needs more power to investigate campaign finance violations—like the $300,000 fine it slapped on Stacey Abrams’ nonprofit earlier this year for failing to disclose millions in donations and spending. Sen. Bill Cowsert, who’s running for attorney general, is leading the charge. “We need transparency,” he said. “Big money shouldn’t dominate politics.” But critics call it political theater, especially with Fulton DA Fani Willis now in the committee’s crosshairs. Meanwhile, the Ethics Commission says it’s hamstrung without stronger subpoena powers. The fight’s far from over. STORY 5: Corps of Engineers says below normal rainfall could make Lake Lanier hazardous Lake Lanier’s water level is holding steady—for now. As of last week, it sat at 1,065.51 feet, just a hair above the historic median of 1,065.39 feet for this time of year. But here’s the catch: rainfall’s been scarce lately, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is keeping a close watch. “The dry spell could mean lower levels ahead,” said Dustin Gautney from the Corps. And with Lanier’s hidden hazards—tree stumps, old roadbeds, even remnants of submerged towns—boaters and swimmers need to stay sharp. The advice? Wear your life jacket, watch for obstacles, and stay safe out there. We’ll be right back. Break 3: Sugar Hill Ice Skating Rink Final STORY 6: Loganville shooting suspect arrested in Lawrenceville A chaotic Friday afternoon unfolded as a shooting at a Loganville CVS ended with an arrest in downtown Lawrenceville. Loganville police issued a BOLO alert around 4 p.m. for a vehicle tied to a “serious incident” at the CVS on Atlanta Highway, where a woman had been shot in the head. Critical condition. No name released. Lawrenceville’s FLOCK cameras flagged the car near the Square. Officers swarmed West Crogan Street, shields up, and arrested the driver without a fight. The suspect’s name? Still under wraps. The victim? Airlifted to Grady. It’s a mess, and the investigation is ongoing. STORY 7: State raises red flags in Gwinnett Schools' CCRPI report Gwinnett County Public Schools is celebrating some wins in college and career readiness—but the state’s latest report card tells a more complicated story. Sure, GCPS outperformed Georgia in seven areas, mostly in elementary and middle schools. But high schools? They’re lagging. The only bright spot there is content mastery. And across all levels, the district is struggling to close gaps, especially in English Language Arts. Red flags? Plenty. Targets missed for multiple demographics—African-American, Hispanic, economically disadvantaged, and more. Progress scores for high schools dropped by over 10 points. The takeaway? There’s work to do. Wins are great, but gaps can’t be ignored. INTRO:I'm Hank, a nineteen year podcasting veteran, filmmaker, and YouTuber, and this is my review of Disney's Tron: Ares. This is a spoiler-filled review of the movie so if that's not your cup of tea this review won't be for you. Note: I saw this movie in 3D and I have never seen Tron: Legacy. I'm neither a Tron fan nor do I know much about the lore.BUDGET:$180-$220 million for production and another $100-ish million for marketing. We're looking at around $300 million dollars when it's all said and done. Three weeks in and we're at about roughly $125 million. OUCH! Profitability is way out of reach.SETTINGS:The world of Tron: Ares is pristine! The saturated colors jump off the screen even in the often dark settings. I found the visuals of this movie to actually match the inflated budget. Moreover, even the regular settings were shot with depth and attention to detail that is simply missing in most modern movies.CHARACTERS:I'm not going to reflect on all the characters, but I'll talk about the main cast.Jared Leto plays the one note Ares computer program that comes to life via the permanence code. I've heard a lot about how bland the Ares character is and I thought to myself how would I direct an actor to convey lines as a computer program made real? Probably just as stilted as his delivery. Could you have made the character be the one “special” character who delivers lines in a human way to set him apart from the others? I'm sure you could, but the way he delivered the lines, while bland, is probably the most logical course. I did like how he questioned what was happening, but those nuanced lines seem lost on many moviegoers. Greta Lee plays Eve Kim the CEO of ENCOM who is trying to find Kevin Flynn's "permanence code" to use for humanitarian purposes. While the character type has been done to death I did find myself having a soft spot for her based on her arc being tied to the death of her sister Tess. Her purpose driven story made sense but has been done ad nauseum. Jodie Turner-Smith as Athena seemed to finally be a role that worked for her. She's basically a 3D printed Terminator and I liked that they didn't stray from her mission and try to make her likeable.Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger was where the wheels started to come off of this movie. This tech billionaire trope is even worse than the Eve Kim checkbox character.Gillian Anderson's Elisabeth Dillinger was a waste in my opinion. She should have played the antagonist and been desperate to cement her legacy and then let things go off the rails from there. I'd of yeeted Evan Peters from the film faster than my ex can make a box of Girl Scout cookies disappear.Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn) is the white Samuel L. Jackson. He has devolved to a caricature. Arturo Castro as Seth Flores is simply miscast. That character has to be much younger in my opinion. Instead of a 40-year old, I'm casting someone in their early to mid 20's. HITS:The overall visuals are astounding! There's simply too much eye candy to ignore. From the suits, to the literal hacking where programs fight each other, I was blown away by the look and style of the film.I found the 3D printing insertion into the story to be both timely and cool. The effects for laser printing things in the real world were especially awesome. The 29 minute time limit for Ares and the others coming through to the real world was an idea I really liked. It reminded me of the recording limits back in the early 2010's where cameras that could record for 30 minutes or more were taxed at a higher rate than cameras that recorded for less than 30 minutes. It could be a nerdy deep cut

Today's guest uses craft chocolate as a way to introduce people to a subject they might otherwise feel intimidated by: chemistry.Professor Robyn Araiza teaches at California State University San Marcos. She leads a class called the Chemistry of Chocolate, which was first created by her colleague Dr. Jackie Trischman about a decade ago. The important thing about this class is that it's not really intended for chemistry students. It's a GE course for non-STEM majors.I met Robyn through our mutual friend Jorge Torres. Jorge took Robyn's class, and he's been a long time listener and supporter of Bean to Barstool. Jorge reached out to me a while back to share his excitement about this class, and about the unexpected way Robyn's research has overlapped with our interests here at Bean to Barstool: she ran a study a few years back looking at caffeine and theobromine levels in coffee and chocolate beers, respectively. Robyn was kind enough to sit down with me to talk about her research, but primarily to discuss her innovative chemistry of chocolate class, and how chocolate and the sensory process can be used in an educational setting to make a complicated subject more approachable. We also hear from Jorge about his own experience as a student in the class.Guests:Robyn Araiza began her studies at CSU San Marcos (CSUSM) in the Literaturedepartment but was inspired and mentored by CSUSM professors to eventually earn her B.S. in Chemistry and later, her Master of Science in Chemistry. She is currently a PhD student in Analytical Chemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Kevin Schug at the University of Texas at Arlington, while on CSUSM teaching faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She is also a Science & Conservation Research Associate with the San Diego Botanic Garden, supervising scientists on SDBG medicinal plant research collaborations. As the CSTEM Mentoring and Outreach Fellow much of her time is also dedicated to mentorship, community education, and outreach. Her roles include being a Super STEM Saturday Coordinator, and Faculty Director of the CSTEM Professional Mentoring Program and Blueprints Peer Mentoring Program, focused on mentorship and career development for students in the program. Her passion for early childhood outreach has led to work with The Center for Research and Engagement in STEM Education as well as helping create STEM focused Girl Scout merit badges. She's also teaches “Chemistry of Chocolate”, an upper division GE course that attracts 200+ students annually from every imaginable major. As a passionate advocate for equity in STEM, Robyn is committed to diversifying instructional strategies both inside and outside the classroom. She consistently seeks innovative ways to inspire students and share her enthusiasm for the sciences.Jorge Torres is the associate producer of the Capital of Craft Podcast, a member of the San Diego Brewers Guild Education Committee, and a U.S. Navy Reservist.
