Small Biz Matters – #201 Providing the small business community with educational content and advocacy since 2014 with Alexi Boyd, broadcaster, advocate and small business owner. Date: 30 March 2021 LinkedIn is the place to be if you’re B2B, we all know that. But are we getting to messaging, profile and social strategy correct? How can we possibly understand the algorithm (which keeps changing) and how can you tell if your message is even making a difference? Like all social media there’s the good, the bad and the ugly. You still need to be yourself, polite and wear your “happy face” and know where the dangers lie, but this is business rather than socialising and sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference. For example, How do we build a LinkedIn network of followers and how do you find the balance between numbers and genuine connections? There is literally no one else I would have on this radio show to educate you on priming your LinkedIn profile and LI social media planning than Jillian Bullock. She speaks all over Australia, is the only certified LinkedIn Ninja in Australia and is incredibly generous with her knowledge of the LinkedIn Matrix. How can you tell if your message is even making a difference? What diagnostics should you be looking at and is this available in the free version? What is the role of a LinkedIn Profile? Does it depend on your audience? Are there any stats around where people look predominantly? If you only had time to improve one section, which would it be? What's the biggest mistake you see people making on their LinkedIn profile specifically? What about in their feed? How can we understand the algorithms? Can they realistically be manipulated Ow frequently does LI make these changes and are they big or incremental so we don’t notice? How can people work with you and learn more about you? LinkedIn to Jack and Jill
The Most Under Utilised LinkedIn Features

LinkedIn to Jack and Jill

Play Episode Play 34 sec Highlight Listen Later Oct 22, 2020 29:19

In this episode Jack and Jill discuss five of the most under utilised LinkedIn features - avoid them at your peril!1. Voice Mail Messaging Feature Within your messages inbox on LinkedIn is the ability to leave a voice mail for someone of up to one minute. You don’t have the ability to listen to it back before you send, but if you feel it was disastrous the first time you can cancel before you send it off, so just start again. 2. The LinkedIn Profile Background Cover Image This massive piece of digital real estate is often underutilised. Way too many business owners are leaving the boring default image and so many of the people that have taken the time to create one sometimes leave it there for years. 3. Invitations to Follow your Company Page One of the best new features on Company Pages is the ability for an admin to invite people from their own network to follow their company page where they work or the business they own. It’s a brilliant way for the admins to invite people from their own network to follow the page but it is restricted to 100 ‘credits’ per month. 4. 10 second Name Pronunciation If you don’t have this relatively new feature on your profile yet, don’t worry it’s being rolled out right now around the globe. Ten seconds is actually a lot of time to simply say your name which gives you the opportunity to say more! 5. Add a Note on a Connection Request This may seem like it shouldn’t be on this list but so few people actually use this feature properly. Here’s the issue, “Hi Jack, I can see we have a lot of connection in common” or “Hi Jill, we have synergy in our businesses so we should connect” is not a personalised connection request. Remember, your brand on LinkedIn is not just in the text you write about the business, the essence of your brand is in the visuals and audio too. Connect with Jack and Jill on LinkedIn!Jane JacksonJillian Bullock

On today's episode of On The Spot, we sit down with Jillian Bullock, a filmmaker, president and CEO of Jillian Bullock Enterprises, a film and video production company based in Philadelphia. Jillian works to bring change through producing, writing, and directing shows that are empowering, educational, and entertaining. When Jillian was a child, her mother married a white man in the Italian mafia. Jillian and her siblings were the only black kids in their neighborhood and were surrounded by mobsters growing up. Her stepfather introduced her to film and they often watched movies together. His dream was the be a filmmaker, and Jillian took on that dream as her own after he passed when she was only 15 years old. Her mother eventually remarried, but her new husband was physically abusive. Jillian was kicked out by her mother and lived on the streets at the age of 15 after defending her. In order to escape homelessness, Jillian was forced to get involved with prostitution to get off the streets. After getting pregnant at 16, Jillian went back to Philadelphia, went back to school, eventually graduated from high school, and got a college degree. ”You have to have some resilience inside yourself to fight and come out of the depths of hell.” “There’s another side, and there’s reasons why people do what they do, so you need to explore that as a filmmaker. That’s what I try to do.” As a black woman, Jillian feels very fortunate as she has not experienced much discrimination as a result of her race in the film industry. She believes it’s because of the way she carries herself, and being surrounded by mobsters as a child greatly contributed to this. Jillian often tells women that they need to teach their daughters to be confident at a young age. Jillian recommends that women get mentors as it made a world of difference in her life. She learned the ins and outs of what was necessary for her to become a successful reporter. Jillian also watches many videos and looks up to motivational people, especially people who have struggled and lived a rough life. She sees how they overcame their struggles and built their own empires and learns from them. People should look up to people whose experiences resonate with them. Key takeaways: ”Life is hard, but the thing is they have to find a path that works with them, meaning that they need to associate themselves with people who are positive and who can uplift them. And they have to get rid of people that are negative distractors, and haters, and people who are not supporting them. And that can be your family members. It could be your spouse. It could be whoever. You know, to me life is too short. It is just too short to be going through life unhappy and just not living your fullest potential and being successful and obtaining your greatness.” ”Just the fact that you opened your eyes and you’re breathing, that’s a great thing, a thing to be grateful for.” ICYMI: Check out our daily newsletter and podcast Four Minutes With On The Dot! As a child, her parents played a critical role in her journey. Their activism and philanthropy showed Brittany the importance of utilizing your privilege in order to expand access to people, a responsibility Brittany takes very seriously. _"Whatever the platform, I believe my work is all about teaching and speaking truth that moves people to action, that moves people to do good work in the world, and my pathway to that certainly has been deeply inspired by the folks that I was raised by and by the communities that I had the privilege to serve." _ Brittany discusses how intersectionality is key for white women and women of color working together for the betterment of all women. She also discusses her role models and what she admires in other women, includeing Oprah Winfrey for her quiet contributions to the Black community, her mother for constantly reminding her that excellence can always be achieved, and friends who are younger than her for their inspirational work and many more. As someone as busy as Brittany, it can be difficult to find a work-life balance. To unplug, Brittany loves to cook and travels frequently. One thing she emphasizes is how important it is for her to spend time with loved ones while traveling. What’s next for Brittany? Brittany is currently writing a book and has been collecting speeches by black women for the past few years. She says the book will be part anthology and part essays of reflection. Her book will be titled We Are Like Those Who Dream, and is set to be released next spring. She’s also has plans of getting married in the Fall! Congratulations! Key Takeaways: _“I think it’s important that when we look for role models; that we don’t just look to wealthy people, that we don’t even just look to people who are older than us. Please join me this Thursday as I welcome: JILLIAN BULLOCK “A woman of inspiration to young girls and women of all ages” Jillian "The Jaguar" Bullock has been called a modern day Superwoman. In addition to being a Writer, Producer and Filmmaker, she also holds the title of Self-Defense Instructor, Fight Choreographer and Boxer. Bullock, who has been in the fitness field for over 30 years, also holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Wing Chun, and has trained extensively as a wrestler and boxer -- most would definitely agree that she has mastered the art of "self-defense" -- which makes it hard to imagine that this modern-day "Superwoman" was once a "victim" of violence. Jillian Bullock knows first hand how important it is for women to learn the art of self-defense -- as a former rape victim (age 11), Bullock counteracted her negative experience into positive energy through empowerment. Determined to never becoming a “victim” again, Bullock learned self-defense techniques that have equipped her to handle any potentially dangerous situation -- and she plans on taking her message (and techniques) to girls and women across the country. Jillian's message for young girls and women is not just “physical” empowerment…but “emotional” and “spiritual” empowerment as well. In addition, Jillian is currently in pre-production of a film entitled, The Champion Inside, which is a script Jillian wrote, centers on a champion female boxer who is forced to retire after she learns she has cancer. Her return to boxing to regain the IFBA Welterweight title is complicated by her age, she's 39, and her fear and lack of confidence to fight again after five years in boxing exile. Along with being the writer, Jillian will wear the hats of producer, actor, and fight choreographer on the film. For more information about the project log on to - www.thechampioninsidemovie.com. In her effort to encourage women to “think outside the box” and take on “non-traditional” jobs, Ji
