When a plane carrying a team of young rugby players crashed into the Andes mountains in 1972, search teams soon gave up hope. But two months later, 16 passengers of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 emerged alive. The events became known as ‘The Miracle of the Andes' and have previously been told in documentaries and films including Society of the Snow. One horrifying detail continues to fascinate audiences - the starving men were only able to stay alive by eating the bodies of those who died. In 2009, Nando Parrado told Louise Hidalgo about their extraordinary story of survival.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Wreckage of the plane in the Andes. In this episode of The Compendium we revist an old favourit and one of our most popular episodes. We dive into the gripping and inspirational story of "The Miracle of the Andes", the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 and the unimaginable circumstances that the survivors faced. We will be drawing on the 1974 book "Alive" by Piers Paul Read, which was written on behalf of the survivors and documents their remarkable journey. What we love about this story is that it is not just a story about survival, but also about stepping up and banding together in the face of adversity. Together Kyle and Adam explore what happens when a plane crashes on a glacier and what it truly takes to survive when everyone has given up on you. This story is a testament to the extraordinary things that people are capable of and how even in the most desperate situations, humanity can shine through. We give you the Compendium, but if you want more, then check out these great resources:1.

pWotD Episode 2440: Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 291,622 views on Saturday, 6 January 2024 our article of the day is Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571.Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was the chartered flight of a Fairchild FH-227D from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Santiago, Chile, that crashed in the Andes mountains on October 13, 1972. The accident and subsequent survival became known as the Andes flight disaster (Tragedia de los Andes) and the Miracle of the Andes (Milagro de los Andes). The inexperienced co-pilot, Lieutenant-Colonel Dante Héctor Lagurara, was piloting the aircraft at the time of the accident. He mistakenly believed the aircraft had overflown Curicó, the turning point to fly north and begin descending towards what he thought was Pudahuel Airport in Santiago de Chile. He failed to notice that instrument readings indicated he was still 37–43 mi (60–69 km) east of Curicó. Lagurara, upon regaining visual flight conditions, saw the mountain and unsuccessfully tried to gain altitude. The aircraft struck a mountain ridge, shearing off both wings and the tail cone. The remaining portion of the fuselage slid down a glacier at an estimated 220 mph (350 km/h), descending 2,379 feet (725 m) before ramming into an ice and snow mound. The flight was carrying 45 passengers and crew, including 19 members of the Old Christians Club rugby union team, along with their families, supporters and friends. Three crew members and nine passengers died immediately and several more died soon after due to the frigid temperatures and the severity of their injuries. The crash site is located at an elevation of 11,710 feet (3,570 m) in the remote Andes mountains of western Argentina, just east of the border with Chile. Search and rescue aircraft overflew the crash site several times during the following days, but failed to see the white fuselage against the snow. Search efforts were called-off after eight days of searching. During 72 days following the crash, the survivors suffered from extreme hardships, including exposure, starvation and several avalanches, which led to the deaths of 13 more passengers. The remaining passengers resorted to cannibalism to survive. As the weather improved with the arrival of late spring, two survivors, Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, climbed the 15,260-foot (4,650 m) mountain peak on the western rim of the glacier cirque without any mountaineering gear. They hiked for 10 days into Chile, traveling 38 miles (61 km), before finding help. On 23 December 1972, two and a half months after the crash, the 16 remaining survivors were rescued. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:36 UTC on Sunday, 7 January 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Raveena Standard.

Escuchar audio

In 1972, the 45 passengers and crew of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 faced extreme weather, avalanches, a variety of injuries, sickness, sun blindness, thirst, and starvation so severe, they were forced to eat the bodies of their friends and family who lay in the snow next to them for over two months in this harrowing tale of survival. Their story is so unbelievable, the first police officers that two members of this group finally contacted took hours of convincing to believe it. No one should have survived a plane crashing at an altitude of over 11,000 feet in the Andes, even in the Spring. The plane crashed far up above the tree line in a snow covered landscape, with no plants or animals for anyone to eat. The plane - because the intended flight was only two hours long - had almost no food on board. It was cannibalism or die. Even with cannibalism, the sixteen men who would make it alive still should have died. It's hard to even put into words the range of emotions that came over me watching this story and delving into this incredible true story. While based on a true story of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 about a soccer team that crashed in the Andes mountains in 1972, the film was equally as compelling. I couldn't even slightly imagine what this must have been like to go through. This was Charles' pick as a film so I get into his history with the film and we talk some differences between the true story and the film, some behind the scenes info, and pose other survival situations.Off-topic rants include: The Donner party, Into Thin Air, climbers, and Josh Lucas ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Felicity, Dawson's Creek, and more...) and to support the show, join the PATREON! www.patreon.com/fashiongrungeGIVE US A 5 STAR RATING & SUBSCRIBE!Hosts: Lauren @lauren_melanie & Charles @charleshaslam Music by Den-Mate @imdenmateFollow Fashion Grunge Podcast Instagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

And you have to hear what she has to say about keeping focused on the future as “it only gets better.” About Gail Davis Davis' decades of corporate marketing and events management were the launch pad for GDA in 1999. Before founding the company, she spent two decades with the global technology conglomerate Electronic Data Systems (EDS, which became part of Hewlett Packard Enterprise and now operates as MicroFocus and DXC Technology) in Dallas. While at EDS, she discovered Nando Parrado, a heroic survivor of the 1972 Andes plane crash that took the lives of many rugby players. Parrado was the keynote speaker for the company's marquee event. Based on the success of those early corporate events, Parrado signed an exclusive agreement with Davis, as it was her efforts that convinced him to share his story after so many years. It was the partnership with Parrado that eventually anchored the creation of GDA. Today, Davis continues to discover new talent and take the professional speaking industry by storm. She is credited with bringing Parrado's harrowing experience to life in the New York Times best-selling book, Miracle in the Andes. It is written as a first-person account of the Andes plane crash. Most recently, at her encouragement, Parrado lent his personal account to the acclaimed new documentary, “I am Alive,” featured on The History Channel. Under her passionate leadership, GDA Speakers has vetted and curated a number of highly qualified speakers who they trust and deliver with confidence. In the first 17 years, they assembled a database of over 5,000 speakers. Then in order to add more value to their clients they cut the list in half.

Tomorrow, October 13th. is the anniversary of one of history's most famous plane crashes. It was on October 13th, 1972 that a Uruguayan Air Force flight, chartered by a rugby team, crashed high up in the Andes mountains. Authorities tried for days to find the wreckage, but ultimately they gave up, unaware that there were survivors. For 72 days, they did what they had to do to survive -- including, unthinkably, feeding themselves by eating companions who had died in the crash. In the end, only sixteen people came down from the mountain, including 22-year-old rugby player Nando Parrado.

In 1972 there was a historic plane crash; the only one in which the plane was flying at both cruising speed + altitude and had survivors. One of the survivors was Nando Parrado. In street clothes and without food, Nando survived the winter in the Andes. His story was told in the 1993 movie, Alive. He was played by Ethan Hawke. Today, we’re joined by Nando. He is one of my heroes and the most courageous survivor I’ve met. Don’t miss this unbelievable story of leadership and drive in the face of dire adversity. SHOW NOTES I was angry, but I couldn't feel pain or sorrow. In a survival situation, something is triggered to protect you because if you suffer that pain, it'd be too much to survive. Winter in the Andes: There's snow everywhere. There's nothing and no one coming. All the born leaders died, [so new] leaders emerged. It's the most fantastic leadership story ever told. I tried to leave. I'd walk 8 paces and I'd sink all the way to my waste in deep snow. What kept you going? "The only thing I knew was that I didn't want to die. I'd fight until I stopped breathing. My mantra was 'If I am breathing, I am alive.'" You are formed by the experiences of your life. I was a typical guy, but the leaders of our team died. Something is triggered inside of you [to become a leader.] Nando Parrado wrote his book Miracle in the Andes 30 years after the accident, as a gift for his father. "What my dad taught me when I was young saved my life in the Andes." I decided to have a second life. When you understand that there is only one, you live in a different way. Nando went to the glacier with his wife + daughters to honor his mother + sister. See the photo here.  If you live your life thinking that, if you changed something from your past, your present would be better: That's insane, because it didn't happen. Live in your present. Plan your future by living the best you can in your present. There is life after tragedy. Go forward and be resilient. Realize that life will not be perfect. People are afraid of losing things. I get it, but I lost everything when I was very young and I came back from that. I'm not afraid of losing things. I'm afraid of losing time to live.  NANDO PARRADO'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Books by Spanish Author Carlos Ruiz Zafon because, to me, a book is entertainment. A good time on a quiet night. He's poetic and simple. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? To be more timid, I wouldn't go into some situations that later I regret. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? Photos of my grandparents. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Pico Mendez from Uruguay. He devotes his life remarkably to helping people. I would ask "How do you do it? How do you find the time?" 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Never look back because the only thing you get when you look back is a bloody pain in the neck. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Don't change anything. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? It was all worth it. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Please subscribe, rate & review wherever you get your podcasts. See you here next Thursday! From the time the plane crashed on October 13, 1972 until their rescue on December 22, Nando Parrado and his fellow Uruguayan rugby teammates were forced to cross both physical and mental boundaries. After waking from a concussion only to learn that his mother had died on impact and his sister was near death, Nando became obsessed with surviving and emerged a hero after he and teammate Roberto Canessa walked for 10 days to find their salvation.
