AND remember: Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened! No Regerts! Let's take a quick look Back, at On This Day in Irish History On 1 July 1681 - St. Oliver Plunkett, Archbishop of Armagh, was hung at Tyburn, after being found guilty of high treason “for promoting the Catholic faith.” He is the last person to be martyred in England. On 4 July 1921 – While awaiting truce with the English, Eamon De Valera ordered the American flag flown in Dublin to “emphasize the principle for which we are fighting.” On 12 July 1691 - The Battle of Aughrin, the most decisive battle of the Jacobite wars in Ireland, took place. It was won by the forces of William III. Over 7,000 warriors were involved in the battle. On 13 July 1886 - Father Edward Flanagan, founder of “Boys Town” in Nebraska, was born, in my own Co. Roscommon. One of the many great activities that occurred since we last spoke was The Ancient Order of Hibernians and Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians State of Ohio Convention, held in Cleveland this year. Patricia Lavelle, Ray McCann, Jim Kilbane, and Kevin McCluskey chaired, and an outstanding team from the Cleveland ladies and two men's divisions located in Cuyahoga County threw a flat-out bash – too fun and too what happens in Cleveland, stays in Cleveland embargoed to detail here. It was on Fire! Congrats to all involved in putting on the first in-person convention in Cleveland post-COVID. Well Done! If you are interested in learning more about the Hibernians, the largest Irish Catholic Organization outside of Ireland, with an active and prolific mission of helping others in so many ways, This is your lucky day! Your support helps us stay alive, so please subscribe! There are many more songs and stories; I hope we will write new ones - of joy, of unification.  Here, and across the pond. We are closer to a One Ireland than we have been in more than 800 years.  And in that vein, Let's unite for America, too. We'll save those songs and stories for next time, when we release Podcast34 on Friday July 16th. Whelp, We've done what we can for this week.  Tomorrow is another day, and another chance to write the future, we want to live in. Happy Independence Day! As always, I end with a bit of the Irish: Nuair a stadann an ceol, stadann an rince Which means: When the music stops, so does the dance. Most of us go to our grave with our music still inside of us.  Don't let it happen to you. Grace us with your music. Now more than ever, wider audiences need to dance to all the beauty around us. Hope to see you soon. Keep the hugs and prayers coming. Thank you listening, and for allowing me to share my stories with you. Please share yours, with me. We're bringing together three successful Asian American sales leaders who were able to break through the proverbial "Bamboo Ceiling." We're incredibly excited to have these panelists discuss their roadmap to leadership, how they navigated the barriers/challenges they faced as Asian Americans in sales, and the qualities necessary to be an effective leader. Our panelists will be: • Paul Park: National VP of Sales at TriNet • Mike Ng: Chief Revenue Officer at Digital Turbine • Mike Wong: Sales Director for LinkedIn Marketing Solutions Paul Park started off breaking records as an IC and worked his way up throughout his career into various sales leadership roles. Paul started off as a Sales Consultant and was promoted from Director of Sales to VP of Tech Sales, and is now the National VP of Sales at TriNet. Mike Ng was the SVP of Mobile at Criteo as well as the GM of Mobile ads at Criteo. He was also the CEO of Manage.com as well as a director of Mobile Sales and Ops at Twitter - contributing to $100M in revenue. Mike is currently the Chief Revenue Officer at Digital Turbine. Mike Wong will be the third panelist from our very own LinkedIn Marketing Solutions. Mike has been with LinkedIn for over 4 years now and was the head of financial sales at Twitter. He doubled their revenue in 2 years in his vertical and worked closely with insurance, brokerages, and asset management firms. He was also the VP of Sales at Adobe, Tremor Video, and was a director of Sales at Yahoo. A huge shout out to Sam Cho for helping make this event work and for Jia for introducing me to Mike Wong! These were my top ten takeaways for moderating the Asians in Sales Executive event that I hosted this week.  1. Don't be afraid to take the road less traveled- Mike Ng for instance, has left huge reputable companies to go to a smaller opportunity where he can have a more considerable impact on the company. 2. Think like an investment banker when Mike Ng shared about acquisitions he discusses how when he acquired when he was CEO at Manage.com that having financial and business acumen is equally as important as having the people skills if your goal is to be acquired.  Create events where you bring people together and you will be the expert and go-to person when anyone has a problem and knows that you know someone who can most likely solve that problem- Paul Park shares with us his tips and thought process in bringing people together and how that's helped him solve problems for all of his friends.  3. Slowing down and taking the time to teach others what you know- just because its first nature for you doesn't mean that everyone else around you gets it. Being able to teach someone how to fish is better in the long run than trying to do everything yourself because, ultimately, your bandwidth is not scalable.  4. Leveraging the disadvantages as well- There are people who can experience what most people would consider a disadvantage in this world for instance being a minority or you can spin it around and really connect with other minorities because it is a rare instance. When I reached out to Paul on my first day of work at TriNet, I immediately knew I wanted to get to know him better, and he took the time to mentor me because there aren't too many Asians in Sales. Paul is able to build a community not only within his Korean networks but he is able to take the time to mentor and is always willing to share his knowledge that that others can build their own ecosystems.  5. Being confident and humble at the same time- Mike Wong is such an influential people leader in our interactions, despite how busy he is, he speaks to everyone as equals. He isn't afraid to put in the sweat equity and understands everyone's unique style and is adaptive depending on the situation. He's helped me be a better leader in his listening and his attitude towards collaboration and authentic sharing. 6. Respect the process- One of the common themes I've noticed with these three leaders is that they are incredibly present even though they all have so many on their plate being leaders for their rapidly growing organizations. 7. Being present and active listening is such a valuable skill, and you get the sense that they are always listening and would not interrupt people, giving them sufficient time to say all that the other person wants to share. 8. Love for the game- they all share a love for sales and business. Hearing their passion and the feedback I've received from the event- everyone is inspired and people who aren't even in sales have expressed an interest in getting into sales because of their stories.  9. Taking Intelligent risks- Not being a pushover and often challenging the status quo is not an easy task, but staying true to their convictions and knowing that it is the right thing to do is another common theme.  10. Admitting to your mistakes- There were many examples of being stubborn as an individual contributor and not playing well in the sandbox. Still, they are all humble enough to know that there could have been more effective resolutions, but that's what makes the best leaders. People who are not afraid to make bold decisions but at the end of the day knowing that what you say will not resonate with everyone and be okay with your decisions and more importantly moving on from it and not being so hard on yourself.  I hope you enjoyed my top ten takeaways. Chatter that Matters
Sheri Allain has a dilemma. Sell, scale or franchise

Chatter that Matters

As a mother, Sheri Allain wondered why there wasn’t more focus on STEM for children, especially girls and why her children’s school had nights devoted to drama, music, arts and crafts, but not one on technology. So Sheri created CODEZILLA to provide hands-on coding classes, camps and parties, and lunch and after school programs for kids ages 4 - 14. And Sheri’s business takes off as she isn’t the only parent asking the questions. And then COVID-19 hits and hands-on becomes virtual? Sheri transforms her business only to find parents all over the world knocking at her door! Has the business become too big and complicated? Sheri asks our experts Bruce Croxon one of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs, Ken Wong one of Canada’s leading business professors and Paul daSilva RBC’s leading franchise expert for help. Should she sell, scale or franchise? After listening to her story and their advice what would you do? Presented by RBC. The perfect mix (01:22) Sheri’s has both educator and entrepreneurial DNA flowing through her blood, her one grandfather was a Prairie school teacher and the other a successful businessman. With this and her desire to provide more STEM activities for school kids, Sheri continues the family legacy and starts her business, Codezilla, a business teaching kids to code.
The beginning - Hello World (03:51) Hiring her first instructors in 2017, Codezilla immediately takes off - forty kids in four hours - first testing the idea and then quickly transitioning to charging for it once she realizes the demand is real. Initially reluctant to be the face of the brand, Sheri realizes that her opinion and points of view are valued by many and makes the switch to be front and centre. Codezilla is now in over 40 schools across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Offline to online - a rapid response (07:04) COVID-19 forces Codezilla to change their delivery model, what was once face to face has to become virtual. Sheri and team responded quickly and within two weeks changed the entire business to online learning, learning as the went and making changes to enhance the experience. Her business grew rapidly but she also has her own kids to look after. Now Sheri has some decisions to make: Sell, scale or franchise.
Sell, scale or franchise? Our experts dial-in (10:49) Paul daSilva, National VP, Franchise Financing, RBC offers great advice on Sheri’s franchising opportunities, key steps to take and where she can get assistance. Ken Wong, Distinguished Professor, Smith School of Business at Queens University, shoots straight and advises Sheri to chose what business she is in; and if she was to franchise she needs to standardize her people, process and props. Bruce Croxon, Managing Partner, Round 13 Capital, believes Sheri should rather scale her business and find a partner to help her do so. Tony’s parting thoughts  (25:21) Although Sheri has a tough choice to make, franchising is not for Sheri. With the DNA of entrepreneurship and teaching, she should scale the business instead and find a partner to compliment her, allowing her to run her business and achieve a balance between her business and family life.    Links and References Sheri Allain, Founder, Codezilla - https://www.linkedin.com/in/sheri-allain-6b49b01/ Website - https://codezillakids.com LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/codezillakids/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/codezillakids @codezillakids Twitter - https://twitter.com/CodezillaKids @CodezillaKids Bruce Croxon, Managing Partner, Round 13 Capital https://www.linkedin.com/in/brucecroxon/ Ken Wong, Distinguished Professor, Smith School of Business at Queens University https://www.linkedin.com/in/ken-wong-4453892 Paul daSilva, National VP, Franchise Financing, RBC LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-dasilva-23642a2b/    RBC Business page – https://www.rbcroyalbank.com/business/index.html

As a child, her parents played a critical role in her journey. Their activism and philanthropy showed Brittany the importance of utilizing your privilege in order to expand access to people, a responsibility Brittany takes very seriously. _"Whatever the platform, I believe my work is all about teaching and speaking truth that moves people to action, that moves people to do good work in the world, and my pathway to that certainly has been deeply inspired by the folks that I was raised by and by the communities that I had the privilege to serve." _ Brittany discusses how intersectionality is key for white women and women of color working together for the betterment of all women. She also discusses her role models and what she admires in other women, includeing Oprah Winfrey for her quiet contributions to the Black community, her mother for constantly reminding her that excellence can always be achieved, and friends who are younger than her for their inspirational work and many more. As someone as busy as Brittany, it can be difficult to find a work-life balance. To unplug, Brittany loves to cook and travels frequently. One thing she emphasizes is how important it is for her to spend time with loved ones while traveling. What’s next for Brittany? Brittany is currently writing a book and has been collecting speeches by black women for the past few years. She says the book will be part anthology and part essays of reflection. Her book will be titled We Are Like Those Who Dream, and is set to be released next spring. She’s also has plans of getting married in the Fall! Congratulations! Key Takeaways: _“I think it’s important that when we look for role models; that we don’t just look to wealthy people, that we don’t even just look to people who are older than us. There is inspiration all around us if we actually just take the time to look.” _ ICYMI: Check out Brittany's On The Dot #WomanToWatch feature on our website OnTheDotWoman.com (https://onthedotwoman.com/woman/brittany-packnett) and on our daily newsletter and podcast Four Minutes With On The Dot! On today's episode of On The Spot, we sat down with Christine Celis and Daytona Camps, the beer-drinking and beer-making mother-daughter duo of Celis Brewery. In 1965 when Christine was four years old, her father Pierre, opened Brouwerij Celis in his hometown of Hoegaarden, Belgium. Then in the early nineties, he flew to the United States smuggling in his tube-socks the original yeast strain he had been using to brew his world-famous Belgian-style Wit beer for the past 30 years. The first Celis Brewery, and also the first craft brewery in Texas, opened in 1992 to instant success, but after over a decade, he begrudgingly sold the brewery to a mainstream company. After nearly 17 years of fighting for the name back, Pierre's legacy lives on through his daughter and granddaughter and Christine is now the owner of Celis Brewery in Austin, Texas. _"After my dad passed away in 2011, I really wanted to continue his legacy because I wanted to make sure that he was not forgotten. He contributed too much to the culture, not just in Texas or the US, but actually worldwide." _ For Daytona, legacy is what it’s all about. "I was junior in high school, and at the time everyone was trying to figure our what they were going to do and I actually had no idea what I wanted to do. And unfortunately at that same year, my grandfather had passed away and there was bunch of people that would contact my mom and give their condolences and share their stories and their experience with my grandfather and all this inspiration that he gave just really motivated me. I was just so interested in the concept of beer, it’s pretty much like an art form. You know you can pretty much create whatever you want with four main ingredients, but you can add this and be creative, innovative." On speaking about how much the beer indistry has progressed for women, Christine says, _"When I started in the 90 here, that’s when it was a no-go, women were absolutely not accepted in the brewing industry. It was so hard to find a woman in that field… Now you’re gonna find a whole lot more brewers, it’s so much more accepted. And actually, there’s a lot of men that really appreciate women being in this field." _ As younger woman in the beer industry, Daytona explains that the industry is more of a community. "It’s nice though at the end of the day, we all hang out, we all support each other. If you need some malt, I mean, I can give you some of that. It’s nice that it’s a very communicative industry, and that’s what, I think, really sets us apart from a lot of other industries out there." What's next for Celis? In this episode they reveal what their next plans are to improve the ATX brewery by building an outdoor biergarten with an area for food trucks and a family area and even a museum featuring the original equipment from the Brouwerij Celis brewery. Key Takeaways: Christine says, _"Never ever take any short cuts. Make sure you do this, again for the right reason. Just make sure that your product is always consistent and it has high-quality product. Just make the product like it’s supposed to be." _ Daytona attributes her success to the role models her mom and her grand-father were for her and their determination to make their dreams come true. "Never give up, no matter long how long it takes."
