Some articles have what it takes not only to arrest the attention, but also to change the life. Maurice Roberts published just such an article in the August–September 1995 issue of the magazine. 'Why Is There No Wrestling?' is a passionate plea for urgent prayer. It is a call to arms that is just as timely today — perhaps more so — as it was to its original readers thirty years ago. We read the piece in full in this week's episode. Featured resources: – Maurice Roberts, 'Why Is There No Wrestling?', Banner of Truth Magazine, Issues 383–384 (August–September 1995). Read the piece as a web article. This week's featured article also appears in Maurice Roberts' paperback The Christian's High Calling, which is a compilation of pieces he wrote for the magazine. He has called us friends. Jesus invites us to a higher level of friendship with Him and pthers which will ultimately change the world!
One time I came across a church's advertisement for their Sunday morning service. The video showed someone walking into church carrying “100 problems.” As they experienced the service, the number of problems kept dropping until, by the time they left, they had “0 problems.”I believe the ad was trying to communicate that we can bring our problems to church and trust that God will care for us. But I also wondered if the simplest takeaway could be misunderstood: “Come to church, and all your problems will disappear.”The Jesus we meet in the gospels never pretends that following him will remove all our problems. What he does promise is this: we don't have to live in fear, because he will take care of us. The troubles we face are real but temporary; his presence and protection are eternal. How have you experienced God's care—not by removing a problem, but by giving you strength or peace in the midst of it?This week we're continuing our study in the Gospel of Matthew, reading Ch 10:26-42. Jesus continues instructing his disciples about what to expect as they go out into the world. Even though large crowds were drawn to him, often amazed by his miracles, Jesus was careful to be honest with his followers about the challenges and opposition they would face. Why do you think Jesus emphasized the hardships of discipleship, even when people were excited about his miracles? As we prepare for Sunday, I encourage everyone to read Matthew 10, focusing on verses 26–42. We invite you to join us this Sunday at 10:00 AM as we dive deeper into these teachings together.Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.
Join a stirring sermon that urges believers to run like athletes for Christ—forget the past, pursue God's high calling, and rely on the power of the Holy Spirit. Through personal stories and Scripture (Philippians 3, David, Moses, and Paul), you'll be encouraged to memorize God's Word, serve boldly, and share the gospel with zeal. ---- The High Calling of God Text: Philippians 3:1-14 Thesis: As the Apostle Paul saw it, “The Christian is the Athlete of Christ!” (How do you see yourself?) “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” (vs. 13a) J It appears at first that Paul can't count! The Greek word for “forgetting” literally means “to neglect or avoid” The fact is there are things in your past that can rob you of Joy and prohibit Spiritual Growth. Past Sins Putting confidence in the flesh! (see vs. 2-6) The Apostle Paul speaks strongly (harshly) about those who try to please God by doing His well in the flesh. “Watch out for those dogs.” (vs2) The Apostle Paul esteems Jesus highly, “Who put no confidence in the flesh” (vs3c) In Phil 4:13, Paul makes it clear, “I can do all things…” “Straining towards what is ahead.” “Straining”-means to extend or stretch forward. Paul envisions us as being “Spiritual Athletes of Christ!” ILL. God is calling us to be intentional and have intensity in our relationship with God. 1st- Run to God! “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” (James 4:8) MEMORIZE THE WORD 2nd Run to God through Jesus Christ! Jesus made it clear, to his disciple, that he was the only way to God. (John 14:6) 3rd Run to God, through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit! “In the last days they will have a form of Godliness but denying his power. Have nothing to do with them.” (2 Timothy 3:5) ---- Find other Podcasts, Sermon Notes and the Bulletin here. https://www.mvcnaz.org/live Stay in touch with our Church Center App at https://www.mvcnaz.org/churchcenter Contact us through our CONNECT form at https://www.mvcnaz.org/connect With Pastor Chuck Ryan.
When Jesus sets us free from sin, what do we do with our freedom? In Galatians chapter 5, the Apostle Paul makes an astonishing statement: that in our freedom, we are to make ourselves slaves to one another in love. CCIW's Senior Minister Andrew Katay preaches the second sermon in our series Perfect Freedom. Bible Readings: Exodus 16:1–3 | Galatians 5:1, 13–18

In this episode of the Bacon, Bibles, and Barbells Podcast, some of the High Calling Fitness Coach Justin breaks down 10 supplements that people may think are HARMLESS, but can actually cause real damage to your overall health when used for too long or in the wrong context over time. The "supplement" industry is kind of like the wild, wild west right now in the health and fitness industry. Some of these things can REALLY harm your body when used in the wrong context or for too long of a period of time. Something like, “If you want to be the greatest, then serve the most,” or “In the Kingdom, greatness isn't measured by gifting or title, but by service.” But if we reduce this rich text to mere moralism, we miss the profound covenantal message Matthew intends his readers to grasp. In this sermon, Pastor Matt unpacks the verse in its full context, emphasizing its courtroom setting, revealing its Christ-centered thrust, and shining a light on the glory of the Gospel and the establishment of God's Kingdom on earth.

Is there something inherently wrong with those titles? Not at all. Listen as Pastor Matt digs into this text to show that something much greater than a legalistic ban on the use of a few titles is at the heart of Jesus' prohibition. In fact, the rejection of exalted titles is eternally important. It is nothing less than an indication of Kingdom Citizenship.

Join us this Sunday for Mother's Day! Pastor Mike Burchfield will be sharing a special message: The High Calling of Motherhood. Text: Luke 2:22-38 "And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
Tom Petersen After a brief and ill-fated start as a daily newspaper reporter, Tom C. Petersen spent decades in the corporate world as a utility communications professional. He started out writing news releases and employee newsletters before transitioning to writing strategic business objec- tives and annual performance reviews. He ultimately was primarily responsible for attending meetings and deleting emails. He left the corporate world in 2023 to focus on writing about the intersection of faith and work, and mostly how poorly he had navigated it over the years. He is intrigued by the challenge of living out our faith with integrity in a workplace that usually doesn't play by those rules. He finds the conflict between the two downright funny. He hopes his struggles serve to encourage others who try to navigate the same path. He's been gratified to have his musings reprinted in outlets like CBN.com, The High Calling site of the Theology of Work Project, and, most recently, WorkLight. He is the author of a new book of humorous essays of how badly he struggles in this area: Thank God It's Monday(?): Balancing Work and Faith While Keeping Your Sense of Humor. Tom is a husband, father, and native Midwesterner with two master's degrees (one of which is still accredited).

1. What is the context of this passage? Why did Paul feel the need to address woman's role in this way?2. What three reasons are given why women are not to teach or lead over men? Is this a restriction for all women to all men or in particular in the church and family?3. What does it mean that a woman will be saved through childbearing? Is this a condition for a woman's salvation?

This is Episode 66 of the Consortium Podcast, an academic audio blog of Kepler Education. In this episode, Dr. Scott Postma delivers a keynote address titled, "Unstupiding Ourselves: The Truth About the High Calling of Classical Christian Education." His talk takes up a case made in a 2022 article by social psychologist, Jonathan Haidt, who argued that a particular change in the way social media works made the past 10 years of American life uniquely stupid. Drawing from the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, Haidt accurately describes a nation that is suddenly disoriented and unable to speak the same language or recognize the same truth. Dr. Postma argues classical Christian education is capable of unstupiding society in the generations to come by restoring a sensus communis and cultivating rational public discourse. This talk was given at the 2024 Consortium conference in Maynard, MA on July 12-13, 2024. Kepler's Consortiums provide resources and regional connections for Christian families, teachers, and educational organizations to expand the reach of classical education and foster human flourishing for generations to come. The New England Consortium of Classical Educators (NECCE) exists to point New England to the unifying Truth found in Christ and His creation, the Good of fellowship with like-minded individuals, and the Beauty reflected in great works of literature, science, and art, through teaching, conversation, and conferences. Dr. Scott Postma lives in the chimney of Idaho with his wife of nearly 35 years. He has four adult children and more than a handful of delightfully rambunctious grand babies. He is the president of Kepler Education, edits The Consortium: A Journal of Classical Christian Education, teaches humanities courses for high school and college students, and is a religious practitioner of the ancient art of Tsundoku. He has two forthcoming books: A Primer on Classical Christian Education and a work on Recovering Christian Humanism for a Post-Christian Culture. You can find his other writings on Substack at Books and Letters.
The apostle Paul cared not for titles, certifications and the accolades of men, her had a much higher goal in mind. Paul was pressing toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, and calls us to do the same. Preached live this morning at Bethany Baptist Church in Saint Augustine, Florida.
