Tony is an archivist, father, husband, and a lost soul of rock and roll. When he is not writing, he is spending time with his family or enjoying a good meal. Tony has been featured as a Yuba County Five case expert on the Mopac Audio podcast Yuba County Five and was also featured as a case expert on the Motor Trend TV show Auto/Biography: Cold Case. The book explores the bizarre and tragic 1978 disappearance of Ted Weiher, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jackie Huett, and Gary Mathias in the Plumas National Forest in Northern California. Four of these men had intellectual disabilities while one was diagnosed with schizophrenia. On Friday, February 24, 1978, they left the Yuba County, California area in Madruga's 1969 Mercury Montego to attend a basketball game in Chico, California. Four days later the car they were traveling in was found abandoned on a snow-covered road in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest, some 75 miles in the wrong direction from home.Four jurisdictions of law enforcement would investigate and search for the missing men. Psychics were brought in, and there were strange reports of sightings of the five from numerous people. One witness came forward with an incredible story of seeing the men disappear into the forest that night. Yet every lead came to a dead end. About four months after they vanished, four of the five men's remains were found some 12 miles from the car, with one discovered in a US Forest Service trailer with plenty of food and fuel to keep them alive for months.Once described as ‘Bizarre as hell', the case of the Yuba County Five has baffled law enforcement and the families of the missing men for over 45 years. Come along for the strange tale of 5 men who disappeared mysteriously. All of our wonderful links can be found here on the linktree: https://linktr.ee/allts The Yuba County 5 case is a mysterious and tragic event that occurred in February 1978, involving five young men from Yuba City, California. The men—Jack Madruga, Jackie Huett, Ted Weiher, Bill Sterling, and Gary Mathias—went missing after a basketball game, and their disappearance has puzzled investigators for decades due to its strange and inexplicable circumstances. Here's a detailed breakdown of the case: The Disappearance On February 24, 1978, the five men attended a college basketball game at California State University, Chico. After the game, they stopped at a convenience store to buy snacks and drinks. This was the last confirmed sighting of the group together. The Search and Discovery For months, there was no trace of the men, despite extensive search efforts. However, on June 4, 1978, a group of motorcyclists discovered a car belonging to Jack Madruga in a remote area of Plumas National Forest, nearly 70 miles from Chico and far off their expected route home. The car was stuck in the snow, but it was in working order, and it appeared that the men had left it voluntarily. The Bodies Ted Weiher's Body: On June 4, 1978, Ted Weiher's body was found in a deserted Forest Service trailer 19.4 miles from the car. He had died of exposure and starvation, despite there being canned food in the trailer. His feet were badly frostbitten, and he had lost nearly half his body weight. Other Bodies: Over the next few days, the remains of Jackie Huett and Bill Sterling were found not far from the trailer, and their bodies also indicated that they had succumbed to the elements. Jack Madruga's body was found between the trailer and the car, indicating he likely died trying to reach help. Gary Mathias's remains have never been found, although his shoes were discovered in the trailer, suggesting he might have also died nearby or moved to another location. The Mysteries Several perplexing elements make the Yuba County 5 case particularly mysterious: The Location: The area where the car and bodies were found was remote, rugged, and not on the men's planned route. It's unclear why they would have driven there. Condition of the Car: The car was found abandoned with fuel in the tank, and there was no apparent mechanical failure. It appeared to have been abandoned because it was stuck in snow, yet it was not clear why the men did not try to walk back to civilization. Survival Choices: Despite having access to food and heating materials in the trailer, Weiher did not use them effectively, leading to speculation about his state of mind or possible coercion. Gary Mathias: Mathias had a history of mental health issues and was on medication, but his fate remains unknown. His absence and the lack of concrete clues about his whereabouts add to the mystery. Theories Various theories have been proposed over the years: Disorientation and Panic: Some suggest that the men became lost and panicked in the snow, leading them to abandon the car and seek shelter in the trailer. Foul Play: There are suspicions of foul play or external intervention that led them to the remote area and resulted in their deaths. Psychological Factors: Considering Mathias's mental health issues, there is speculation that a psychological crisis might have influenced their decisions and behaviors. Conclusion The Yuba County 5 case remains one of the most baffling and tragic unsolved mysteries. Despite numerous investigations and public interest, the exact circumstances that led to the men's disappearance and deaths are still unknown, leaving many questions unanswered.

It was supposed be the most exciting weekend for five friends as they prepared for the biggest game in their basketball careers. Ted Weiher, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jackie Huett, and Gary Mathias were to play in a tournament that would enable them to travel to Los Angeles courtesy of the Special Olympics. They'd planned to watch their favourite college team first though, to inspire them for the following day. On Friday, February 24, 1978, five friends left the Yuba County, California area in Jack Madruga's 1969 Mercury Montego to attend a basketball game in Chico, California. Four days later the car they were traveling in was found abandoned on a snow-covered road in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest, some 75 miles in the wrong direction from home. What happend to the Yuba County Five has baffled people for over 45 years and in his forensic deep dive in to the case, author and researcher Tony Wright chased down every rabbit hole on the search for answers. After the snow melted in June, four of their bodies were recovered, scattered miles from their abandoned car. As for the fifth member of their group, he mysteriously vanished altogether. As their causes of death were revealed, police wondered what had driven the men into the forest in the first place, and why things unfolded the way they did. On February 24, 1978 5 mentally disabled but high functioning men set off to Chico, CA to see a UC Davis game. Their car would later be found 35 miles off course on an unpaved mountain road, somewhere they never would've gone. It would be about four months later when bodies finally started to be found but that wouldn't answer many questions within the case. Police never believed the 4 men walked from where their car was found to where their bodies were found, so how did they get there? It is also not certain the men were even in the car when abandoned, so who brought it to where it was found? To this day Gary Mathias has never been found and it is unknown what the men went through in the months they were missing or how they eneded up like they did. Also be sure to rate us 5 stars on Apple podcasts if that is where you listen. In 1978, five friends set out on a road trip from Yuba City to see their favorite basketball team play in Chico, California. None of them returned home that night and the next day their abandoned car was found on a mountain road that was far out of their way back to Yuba City. But it's what searchers uncovered 6 months after the men went missing that leaves everyone with more questions than answers. In 1978, five young men went to a basketball game a few towns over from their own, and never returned home. Months later, the emaciated and frozen remains of four of them were found scattered in the woods some 50 miles from the route they would have been driving. The whereabouts of the fifth man (Gary Mathias) remains unknown, as do the “how" and “why" of his friends' fate. This week, Hannah tells Katy the story of the Yuba County Five, an unsolved mystery that still haunts those involved to this day. The girls discuss the ways mental health diagnoses have changed in the past 40 years, their own theories on how and why The Boys (as they were known by their family) ended up in the perilous situation that ultimately ended their lives, and what, if anything, could have been done to prevent it. 5 young men from Yuba City, affectionately known as "The boys" by their family, went to a basketball game in Chico, California on February 24, 1978. This was the last anyone would ever see them again. Their vehicle was found on a mountain road in Plumas National Park, some 70 miles from Chico and not on the road home to Yuba City. Sadly, 3 of the 5 guys bodies were located in the forest. The 4th, Ted Weiher, was located in an encampment trailer approx 20 miles from where the vehicle was located. Despite having food for over a year in the trailer, it was ruled that Ted had been in the trailer for about 8 weeks before succumbing to hypothermia and starvation. The 5th man, Gary Mathias, has never been located. Listen to the facts and our theories on what is known as "American Dyatlov Pass"

-> www.instagram.com/launrad www.facebook.com/mordskurinn www.instagram.com/mordskurinn

Is there a rational explanation for what happened to the Yuba County Five? This week on Solvable Mysteries we tackle one of the most famous mysteries in recent American history, the inexplicable detour of the Yuba County Five into snow-filled mountains in 1978, after attending a basketball game in Chico, California. The group was composed almost entirely of intellectually challenged men, except for the leader of the group, Gary Mathias. They were excited about the game they were scheduled to play the next day, and because of this, it was inexplicable that they made a complete detour into the snowy mountains, instead of returning back to Yuba City, their home. This turned out to be fatal for four of the five, while one, Gary Mathias, remains missing, and is feared dead as well. Please Subscribe to our YouTube channel to make sure you don't miss new episodes of the Solvable Mysteries Podcast, we upload on a weekly basis.

This is a story of an unsolved death of 4 men in Yuba county. One of them is still missing and very likely the police will never find him. Today’s episode was the story of Jack Huett, William Sterling, Jack Madruga, Theodore Weiher, and Gary Mathias. The men were part of a basketball team that was going to play the Special Olympics. The release the tension, they attended a basketball game, but never came back home…The unsolved death of the men will be in history forever. The event of 1978 is still unsolved…In this episode I dove deep into 5 segments of this sad story: background information, the disappearance, the investigation, the appearance of the bodies + evidence, and the theory on the murder. In conclusion, it is to believe that one of the men died, and they all decided to leave the place without leaving traces that they have been there. However, everything went south and they ended up dead of missing forever (very likely, dead). This video is sponsored by PodDecks: Use Code TCNS for 10% off. https://powered-by-pod-decks.peachs.co/a/lawrence-leaseFollow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/truecrimensLike Us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/truecrimeneversleepspodcastSupport Us By Buying Us a Coffee: www.buymeacoffee.com/tcnsSOURCEShttps://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/6ni625/the_american_dyatlov_pass_five_young_men_abandon/https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article226544615.htmlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWT3FxsEexI

In February of 1978 the news in northern California was consumed by Ted Bundy’s arrest, coverage of the East Area Rapist, and Roman Polanski’s escape to France following charges of rape. There was one story, however, that took up a lot of page space in The Sacramento Bee, from February to June of that year. It’s the story of five men that went to a basketball game in Chico and never came home. The mystery of the Yuba County Five, or the boys as their parents called them: Tim Weiher, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jackie Hewitt and Gary Mathias was forgotten about for nearly 40 years, until the story was posted on Reddit in 2017 on the Unresolved Mysteries subreddit. From there, the story became an internet sensation. Podcasts far and wide have covered the topic ever since, and there has even been new information to emerge 40 years later. But the heart of the mystery still remains where it has always been: in the questions that still need answering. This week, The Our Strange Skies Podcast veers away from UFOs to discuss the ill fated journey of five men, who never came home. What led them to a rural mountain road to ultimately walk to their deaths in the frigid Sierra Nevada mountains. Show Notes Episode 283: Play Me Some Mountain Madness Part 2 The Yuba County Five (Spooktacular 2020) This week Host Dave Bledsoe reveals HIS thoughts on what happened to the Yuba County Five only to reveal he hasn't really given it any thought. (What, you expected answers?) On the show this week we examine other people's theories of the disappearance from the likely to the wildly implausible. (Again, you expected answers?) Along the way we dive into the history of the man many believe is the cause of the Boy's vanishing into the night, Gary Mathias. We learn about his mental illness, criminal history and deep and abiding love of long walks and staggering amounts of lysergic acid diethylamide! From there we looked into the explanations of the families of the missing men and investigators and of course the random opinions of people on Reddit! (Reddit, where you go if you just want AN answer, not necessarily the right one.) Then we detour into the paranormal explanations with a needlessly long and utterly unproven theory that fits with the theme of the month, but has no basis in evidence. (Happy decorative gourd season motherfuckers!) Then we provide you with our theory, which best fits both the facts as known and the time and place the disappearance occurred. (It is based on exhaustive research, meaning we got really high and decided this is what happened!) Our Sponsor this week is the 1969 Mercury Montego, a car so great awesome you will get lost in it! We open the show with George Carlin pontificating on the nature of absence and close with Two Minutes to Late Night and their mountain getaways! In late February of 1978, five men were heading home from attending a college basketball game when they stopped for some snacks. This would be the last time the men were seen or heard from again (maybe). Thus begins the strange story of the Yuba County Five. What caused these men to drive the opposite direction of their homes in the dead of night? Why would they navigate up a snowy mountain road only to abandon their (perfectly good) car and set out on foot? Where is the fifth man whose remains were never found? And that’s only the tip of the iceberg on this truly bizarre and mystifying tale. We grab our flashlights and snowshoes to go in search of the Yuba County Five this week. Plus, Alexa tries to take over John’s hosting duties (might be an improvement), we discover that for some reason Conspiracy Bot has dry cleaning (he’ll try to explain), and the fellas spend way too much time examining an inane aspect of the story (translation: it’s just another episode). All of that and more on the podcast that NEVER leaves a candy bar half eaten (that will make sense later) – Hysteria 51.Special thanks to this week’s research sources:Research Assistant - Raymond Walden IVNewspapers / BooksL.A. All week, Gary Mathias told his mom "We got a big game Saturday, Don't you let me oversleep." He laid his jersey out on his bed then headed out the door to attend a game at Cal State, Chico with four of his best friends. Rather quickly, Jack Madruga's Mercury Montego was found abandoned up a desolate mountain road. The car was perfectly functioning and the boys were missing. Months later, the group of boys were finally found, dead and in different places around the mountain. All but one. To this day, Gary Mathias remains missing. This week, we're talking about the bizarre disappearance of the Yuba County Five, also known as the American Dyatlov Pass. Sources: Morbidology Mental Floss YCF Wiki
USA, 1978. Fünf Freunde verschwinden auf mysteriöse Weise. Die Überreste von vier von ihnen werden Wochen später weit abseits ihres Weges in der Sierra Nevada gefunden. In February of 1978, an unsolved incident occurred to five young men from Yuba County that is still being investigated by the area police today. The five men are known collectively as the Yuba County Five, and the incident itself is referred to as the American Dyatlov Pass. On February 24, 1978, Gary Mathias, Jack Huett, William Sterling, Ted Weiher and Jack Madruga left a college basketball game at 10 PM with the intention of driving home to get ready for their own league basketball game the next day. Unfortunately, none of the men arrived at their destination. The car they were driving was found two days after a search was launched, but because of a winter storm hitting the area shortly after, the authorities had to postpone the search. On June 4, 1978, a group of motorcyclists happened upon a ranger cabin that was about twenty miles from the abandoned car, where they discovered the emaciated body of Ted Weiher. The remains of 3 of the other men were discovered shortly after in the surrounding area, but the body of Gary Mathias was never found. There are a lot of questions and very few answers surrounding the strange and mysterious disappearance and deaths of these young men. What made them drive on a road far off from the route they should've taken? Why would they exit a perfectly working car and walk through the snow and woods to nowhere? In 1978, five men piled into a car after a local basketball game, they stopped at a shop to pick up some snacks and then they vanished. The next day their car was found on a mountain road, without a scratch, half a tank of petrol and in perfect running order. Why would the men have left the car and entered the freezing wilderness? It wasn’t until the summer that four of the men were found, well at least their bodies were...but the discoveries only deepened the mystery; one of the men was even found in a trailer, surrounded by food - but had seemingly starved to death. To this day Gary Mathias, man number five, remains missing - leaving us asking the question what happened to the Yuba 5? 40 some years ago 5 men went missing. 4 were discovered dead in mysterious circumstances. 1 was never found. It's been called the American Dyatlov Pass. We tell the story and do our best to give our take. But this is truly a weird one.
On the night of the 24th of February, 1978, a group of five young men attended a college basketball game at California State University. The group of men had been anticipating their Special Olympic basketball tournament that was scheduled for the very next night in Sacramento, which they had been looking forward to for months. After the game, they traveled 70 miles in the opposite direction for no apparent reason, and 4 of the men were found dead months later. One of the men is still missing to this day.WTF Moments:Over 30 miles outside of Oroville and 70 miles from Chico, Jack Madruga's car came to rest empty on a desolate road in the High Sierras, stopping just on the snow line at 4,400 feet in elevation. The car’s underside was completely undamaged. Investigators concluded that the driver had either used astonishing care and precision, or else the knew the road extremely well – Jack, hated the cold, and according to his parents, would never drive it in the snow or unfamiliar territory. In fact, none of the boys aside from Mathias, cared for camping or other outdoor activities. That same night, a man named Joseph Shones was driving along the same route and begin to have a f*cking heart attack. He laid down on his backseat and kept his car running to keep warm - After several hours, the gas ran out and he thought he had seen a group of men and a woman with a baby, walking in the light of another vehicle’s headlights. Shone's claimed he called out for help and the lights disappeared and everything had gone quiet. Once he had rested for some time, he walked eight miles down to get help at a place he had been drinking at earlier in the day called Mountain House, passing a strange abandoned blue-green colored car along the way.Ted Weiher’s body was discovered first in an abandoned cabin. He was laying on a bed with eight sheets wrapped around him, including his head. The autopsy showed that he had died of a combination of starvation and hypothermia. He had lost nearly half his body weight, and the growth of his beard suggested he had lived as long as 13 weeks from when he had last shaved. Ted’s autopsy showed that Ted died of hypothermia and starvation, despite there being a propane tank and over a years’ worth of canned food in and near the trailer. The cans of food required a P-38 can-opener, a very specific can-opener to the military and army - Gary Mathias and Jack Madruga were the only ones in the group with military experience. In the trailer, there was a gold watch found on a side table that did not belong to anyone in the group.Jack Madruga and Bill Sterling’s body were found on opposite sides of the road 11.4 miles from where the car had been. The former's body had been partially consumed by scavenging animals; only bones remained of the latter, scattered over a small area. Two days after the discovery of Jack and Bill, as part of one of the other search parties, Jack Huett's father insisted on helping the police in the search, since his son was the last 2 that still hadn’t been found. During the search he discovered his son’s blue jean jacket in the snow and when he ran to pick it up, a back bone fell out of the jacket. His shoes and jeans nearby helped identify the body. Yikes.Gary Mathias was never found. He has been missing for over 41 years, and this case remains unsolved to this day.Check out our website!Contact us!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/join/cocktailsandconspiracies?)

Fall is here and that can mean only one thing Scary Stories. There’s a reason a lot of scary movies take place in the 70’s. No Cell Phones, people were spread out, cars would break down, and people shared milk. Richard and Shawn break down the tale of the Disappearance of Gary Mathias. Gary and his friends set off to see a College Basketball game one late cold February night. Each member of “The Boys” as they were known had a few issues. But a fun night out was just what the doctor ordered. There was one problem after not returning home the next day a search was underway. What happened to the group known as “The Boys”. The main question that Richard and Shawn try to figure out is why the heck did they share a carton of milk? February 24, 1978. Chico, California. After embarking on a road trip to attend a basketball game, five mentally disabled young men - 24-year old Jackie Huett, 29-year old Bill Sterling, 30-year old Jack Madruga, 32-year old Ted Weiher, and 25-year old Gary Mathias - begin the 50-mile drive back to their homes in Yuba County, but never arrive. Four days later, their abandoned car is found in some snow on an isolated mountain road, but the five men, a.k.a. “The Yuba County Five”, have gone missing. After the spring thaw hits, the remains of four of the victims are discovered at different locations throughout the area, but Gary Mathias is never found. While the cause of death is determined to be exposure, there are many unanswered questions. Why did they drive over 35 miles off the highway to such an isolated location? What prompted them to abandon their vehicle? Did an eyewitness see other people with the five men on the road that night? This week’s episode about the Yuba County Five is one of the most bizarre mysteries we’ve ever covered, and is considered by some to be an American version of the infamous Dyatlov Pass incident.
