The Book of the Dead

As summer drew to a close in September of 1966 in Cincinnati, Ohio, something terrible was happening at 3381 Greenway Avenue amid another killer's reign of terror attacking women. The Bricca family, Jerry, Linda, and their little girl, Debbie, were brutally murdered in their own home as their neighbors gathered in their homes, settling in to watch TV on that rainy evening. Decades later, the mystery of who committed this heinous crime and who was responsible remains unsolved. Today, I am joined by Brian Santana as my cohost as we sit down with the one man who has spent his life investigating this crime. J.T. Townsend walks us through the crime that has had a hold of him since childhood, so much so that he compiled his research into a comprehensive look at the case in his book Summer's Almost Gone. J.T. takes us through it all, from the timeline, the possible motives, and the person who he believes got away with murderJ. T. In October of 1978, off the coast of Cape Otway flew the 20-year-old Australian pilot, Frederick Valentich. According to the Radio Exchange he had with radio controller Steve Robey, Frederick reported an aircraft flying above him, but Steve verified that there was no air traffic in that area. Soon after, in correspondence that would baffle Robey and those who saw the transcript after the fact, Frederick would tell Steve that the vessel flying over him was not an aircraft at all. After this shocking revelation, Frederick would disappear with no trace of him or his plane ever to be found. Deverrie was murdered in June of 2016, and, since then, Debi has been fighting for answers as to what happened. With a lack of suspects and a police force with even fewer resources, it has been an up hill battle, but Debi won't stop until she sees someone arrested for her daughter's murder. In today's chapter, I sat down with former counter-terrorism task force commander and author of Outside the Wire, Gary Edgington. Gary is a former counter-terrorism task force commander with over thirty years in law enforcement. From 1999 to 2008 he was a member of the LA FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force. After 9/11 Gary commanded a counter-terrorism task force for the California DOJ. In 2008, Gary deployed to Iraq as an advisor with the US Army. After redeploying, Gary worked intelligence assignments with the DOD and the Long Beach Police Department. Gary is also the son of a law enforcement officer who was murdered in the line of duty while Gary was only in the third week of police academy training. In today's chapter, Courtney sat down with Glynn Martin, retired detective and Executive Director of the Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting fallen LAPD Officers' families. During the discussion, Glynn highlights his career as a detective and the risks Law Enforcement Officers face on and off duty. He also shed light on some of the officers who have lost their lives while off duty: Det. Thomas Williams, Detective Russell Kuster, Officer Juan Diaz, Officer Fernando Arroyos, and Officer Fred Early. These officers all lost their lives while off duty and it is a testament to how honorable they were and the loss is still felt years, and even decades, later.
