"The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and Jay Key returned from Japan with cart loads of toys, collectibles, and sofubi, representing everything from Godzilla to Ultraman to Spectreman to Zone Fighter. Whether it was at Mandarake or the Godzilla Store in Tokyo or Hobby Jungle or Astro-Zombies in Osaka, they managed to pick up cool items from Marusan, Medicom Toy, Bandai, FrogTree, Fewture Models, US Toys, Marmit, and many more. As kaiju movies were becoming passe, kaiju shows like Ultraman were growing in popularity. So, Toho decided it needed in on that market. Some hastily created ideas and multiple famous kaiju cameos later, we had Zone Fighter in 1973. But did it match up to Ultraman? Join us with Chris Champlin to find out!
Zone Fight Power! We've spent the last few weeks bingeing this relatively unknown Toho show that stars Godzilla, Gigan, and King Ghidorah. Is it worth the watch or is it simply just another Ultraman wannabe? Listen to Ian Layden's podcast: What Was Your Favorite Part? We'd love to hear from you! Send us a voice message or email us. Nick, Andrew, Evan, and James discuss Zone Fighter, episodes 20-22, possibly the strongest batch of episodes we’ve ever reviewed! Plus, a LOT of callback to episode 17 (go listen to episode 28 of our podcast first; you won’t regret it!), the Garoga Eye Code, the most ruthless member of the Zone Family, the incredible escalation of body-count (“The death-toll is catastrophic!”), the ‘Homeless Godzilla’ theory, the Zone Fighter inspirations (plural!) that led to Shin Godzilla, the Zone Fighter inspirations (plural!) that shaped Richard Donner’s vision for Superman II, a tragic requiem for the end of an era, and much more!
Nick, Andrew, James, and Evan herald the grand return to Zone Fighter, episodes 17-19; including some of our favorite and least favorite episodes to-date! Plus a major milestone, crucial counter-propaganda, musings on the fourth dimension and multitudinous variants thereof, the greatest kaiju movie from the 90s that you’ve never heard of, MechaGodzilla’s debt to Zone Fighter, comparative corpse-levels with Ultraman, the true reason that Garoga plans always fail, the obsessive dangers of Vacation Mode, and much, much more in one of our zaniest trips into Zone Fighter yet!Introductions - (0:30)1 Year of G-Force - (0:54)A PSA About Gigan - (1:55)If You're New Here - (3:40)Ep. 17: Go! In this episode, we get to see a Kaiju-sized re-imagining of Frankentstein's monster, and as a bonus the misunderstood beast is dueling with Baragon! WARNING THIS IS NOT A NORMAL EPISODE. This week Ben and Hank are talking over a Youtube playlist of various Godzilla and Godzilla-related material. Yes really. If you want to follow along the link is below. Because this is a commentary track for copyrighted material on Youtube there is a chance the playlist is no longer available in the future so there is an ephemeral nature to this podcast. Get it while it’s hot. Also there’s a bonus Daily Motion video at the end because clean Zone Fighter footage doesn’t really exist on Youtube. There’s a lot of good stuff here and many of the best Godzilla GIFs come from this stuff so I hope you can join us. And again, apologies if Youtube has deleted part of this playlist. Byrd and Matt are joined again by Kevin Derendorf (author of Kaiju For Hipsters, Maser Patrol blog) to review Toho’s kaiju/hero series Zone Fighter! With Japanese cinema nearly dead and the rise of Ultraman and Kamen Rider on TV, Toho of course got into tokusatsu hero game in the early 70s. For Zone Fighter, they enlisted some of their top talent, including directors Ishiro Honda and Jun Fukuda and special effects directors Teruyoshi Nakano and Koichi Kawakita, and suit maker Keizo Murase, among others. Although the series is known for its guest appearances by Godzilla, Gigan and King Ghidorah, the entire 26 episode run has lots more to offer than appearances of iconic Toho kaiju. We watched the entire series and are here to tell you all about it! Enjoy the conversation!
