Crank up the surf rock for a day at the beach and a nice lobster dinner, because we're talking the time Godzilla fought a giant crustacean! This low-key island adventure features a major changing of the guard behind-the-scenes, resulting in a fun and unique James Bond-inspired story where a ragtag group of misfits find themselves working with sleepy kaiju to stop a terrorist organization. We talk about Mothra as a honk-shoo queen and Godzilla as a tired dad, budget cuts, how the end of the studio system resulted in Jun Fukuda becoming the new Godzilla guy (whether he liked it or not), and more! Punch! Punch! NostalgiaCast '70s Palooza continues with a kaiju-and-fun-filled discussion of GODZILLA VS. MEGALON, the man-in-monster-suit melee that Leonard Maltin famously called "A hoho from Toho." Dan and Angela of the Dissect That Film podcast join Jonny and Darin to gasp and guffaw at all the insane/inane choices and unapologetically repurposed footage that make up this 13th(!) adventure in the Big-G's long-running franchise.
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! Neil Riebe makes a dangerous journey to Hong Kong to join Nate for another “Godzilla Redux” with Son of Godzilla. This film was made in the “Year of the Kaiju,” 1967, and along with King Kong Escapes, was Toho's big contribution to it. The studio's “B team,” led by director Jun Fukuda, returned to helm this island adventure…that infamously introduced fans to “the Jar Jar Binks of the Godzilla franchise,” Minilla (aka Minya). But it also has some impressive insect kaiju. Believe it or not, this was made as a date movie…for very Japanese reasons! All this and more in the latest MIFV! Jun Fukuda presents two new versus movies for the Monster Rankings: the kaiju theme park movie Godzilla vs. Gigan, which introduces us to the hook-handed monster, and Godzilla vs. Megalon, wherein Godzilla and Megalon are not so much the point as the totally-not-a-kaiju creation of Jet Jaguar. Neither are spectacular examples of big-scaled monster action but both have their moments and identities that may secure their placement in the kaiju arena. It's been a while… and yet the promise for the future remains potent, so stay strong kaiju friends, the work's not done, and there remain so many monsters left to rank in the future.

We unleash the dead on this episode! We discuss the cult classic Raiders Of The Living Dead, a 1986 horror movie by (sort of) Samuel M. Sherman. Three different versions of this movie exist, and we talk about every single one of 'em on this episode! It's a horror history course, and it's almost time for class! Director Sam Sherman's company INDEPENDENT-INTERNATIONAL PICTURES CORP purchased an unfinished 80 minute film called DYING DAY from special FX artist Brett Piper, which was re-shot over and over and over until becoming RAIDERS OF THE LIVING DEAD. All three versions of the film are discussed on this episode, which has different versions itself! You can watch this episode in stunning DEATH-O-VISION exclusively on Patreon! Our most interminable podcast format, Games Court, returns! 18 listeners' pre-owned games purchases go on trial in front of the corrupt Judge Castle, who delivers shaky justice from the courtroom of his dubious island nation. From Zelda on the CD-i to Jasper Carrott's Golden Balls on Wii and DS, it's an absolute treasure trove of nonsense this week. Sorry again for the continued existence of Games Court. This week's music is from the No More Heroes soundtrack by Masafumi Takada and Jun Fukuda. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In a fun little “sequel” to MIFV's glorious Pacific Rim episode, Nate is joined by the co-host of The Drift Space podcast, Jack “GMan” Hudgens, to discuss a sequel Nate has hated since seeing it in a theater: Pacific Rim: Uprising. Nate didn't want to have an episode on this film, but when he saw an opportunity for a Fifth Wednesday Bonus Episode, he decided to bring Jack, a stalwart defender of the film, to convince him it has merit. And he makes a valiant effort, going so far as to compare it to Jun Fukuda's Godzilla films! Does Jack succeed at changing Nate's mind? Listen to find out! Listen to The Drift Space's episode on Pacific Rim. Additional music: “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org. This week to celebrate Father's Day we have a look at the 1967 film SON OF GODZILLA. This is Episode #373!Son of Godzilla (怪獣島の決戦 ゴジラの息子, Kaijū Shima no Kessen: Gojira no Musuko, lit. Monster Island's Decisive Battle: Godzilla's Son) is a 1967 Japanese kaiju film directed by Jun Fukuda, with special effects by Sadamasa Arikawa, under the supervision of Eiji Tsuburaya. Produced and distributed by Toho Co., Ltd, it is the eighth film in the Godzilla franchise. It stars Tadao Takashima, Akira Kubo, Akihiko Hirata, and Beverly Maeda, with Hiroshi Sekita, Seiji Onaka, and Haruo Nakajima as Godzilla, and Marchan the Dwarf as Minilla.Son of Godzilla received a theatrical release in Japan on December 16, 1967, and was released directly to television in the United States in 1969 through the Walter Reade Organization.
In this episode Zack and Collin discuss Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster (1966). Listen in as they talk about the directorial debut of Jun Fukuda, and how a movie originally planned to star King Kong turned into Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster.
Matt, Byrd and Tom pay tribute to the prolific actor Akira Takarada, who passed away recently at the age of 87. We discuss Takarada's vast career in acting, voiceover, and activism. Our main topic is two spy spoofs Takarada starred in, 1965's Ironfinger (aka 100 Shot, 100 Killed), and 1967's Golden Eyes (aka Booted Babe, Busted Boss). Directed by Jun Fukuda, these action comedies are stacked with many of the major Toho actors of the time and also have strong ties to the Godzilla franchise (especially Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster). Both films are streaming on the Criterion Channel in the United States. Are these underseen movies worth tracking down? Listen and find out! But first, we have a news roundup with our predictions on possible upcoming Godzilla and King Kong movies.
Judge Matthew Castle will decide if defendant Samuel Roberts lives or dies over a series of dodgy games purchases! Enjoy this sequel to our 15th episode from back in March, and hear our thoughts on Deathloop (after 7 hours with a preview build) and No More Heroes 3. This week's music is from Silent Hill: Shattered Memories by Akira Yamaoka, the No More Heroes 3 soundtrack by Nobuaki Kaneko, Jun Fukuda and Kazuhiro "MEEBEE" Abo, and the Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulation soundtrack by Noriyuki Iwadare.
Byrd, Matt and Tom discuss Jun Fukuda's obscure sci-fi comedy, Konto 55: Grand Outer Space Adventure. The film stars the comedy duo Konto 55, as they and their mutual love interest are abducted by aliens in order to study earthlings' knack for violence. An alien Bluebeard, Marilyn Monroe, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, Yang Gufei, and Ono no Komachi also appear. It is as insane as it sounds. So how does this daffy obscurity fare? Listen and find out!

Even though there have been a few twists and turns, the Monogatari Series has been quite 'comfortable' so far. All of that is about to change. This week I'm plunging into the Suruga Monkey Arc in Bakemonogatari in order to explore what makes it so different to the other two. Matthew and Samuel share their top 10 lists, and delve into their memories of covering the early days of HD console gaming. This week's music is from the God Hand soundtrack by Masafumi Takada and Jun Fukuda, the Halo 3 soundtrack by Marty O'Donnell and the Hotel Dusk: Room 415 soundtrack by Satoshi Okubo.
On this episode the gang are joined by the duo from Monsters vs Men to discuss the first Jun Fukuda Godzilla film, Ebirah Horror of The Deep! They discuss Jun Fukuda's later disdain for the series, the introduction of a wackier tone, and plenty of MvM in-jokes. NOTE: This episode unfortunately has audio issues so the audio quality will be a bit lacking. We apologize for this and pledge that future episodes will avoid this. Thank you.

For this October horror episode, we get into some werewolf shenanigans by talking about screen adaptations of manga legend Kazumasa Hirai's strange Wolf Guy franchise. First up, we have Toho's 1973 film, Horror of the Wolf, directed by Masashi Matsumoto and co-written by Godzilla veteran Jun Fukuda. Next up, we discuss Toei's 1975 Wolf Guy, starring Sonny Chiba as an older version of the character. Then we follow it up with JC Staff's six part anime series. The world of Wolf Guy a bonkers one full of murder, rape, gore, martial arts, questionable romances, and overall sleazy exploitation. But first we discuss the first trailer for Godzilla: Singular Point and our first look at Pacific Rim: The Black. Tune in and join the conversation!
Nick, Andrew, Evan, and Parker discuss the sometimes-maligned, sometimes-beloved showa classic Son of Godzilla! Plus the perils of international communication, kaiju as both characters and natural disasters, the most Minilla-relevant grocery chain, The Three Godzillas (move over, DC comics!), and a surprising number of comparisons to the original Mothra, and vs. SpaceGodzilla!
Punch! Punch! Punch! Watch out! Here comes Jet Jaguar! And we're not just talking about the band on this week's episode! This week, author Anthony Wendel joins Derek to discuss the 1973 film (although it wasn't released in the US until 1976) Godzilla vs. Megalon (dir. Jun Fukuda, Yoshimitsu Banno). Following the random selection and then explicit demand of AJ from the Cult Popture podcast, we’re dipping back into the Showa-era Godzilla films, with Jun Fukuda’s Son of Godzilla. We’re joined by longtime friend and Godzilla-expert Angie to help us make sense of this eighth(!) entry into the franchise. This time, there’s a baby Godzilla, a remote weather experiment station on a pacific island, a lady who has been hiding in a cave for some reason, and zero stakes. So it’s a pretty distant echo of the original 1954 masterpiece. Still, there’s something in it’s 60s color palette, modified environmental message, and Gilligan’s Island-like hijinks that make it a must-watch for the Godzilla completist. If you’d like to watch ahead for next week’s film, we will be discussing and reviewing Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator (1940) with Kevin Allison (of Risk! The Podcast and The State).

Jane Campion’s filmed adaptation of the memoirs of celebrated New Zealand poet and author Janet Frame offers a desperately poignant and often devastating account of childhood and womanhood in the twentieth century. Played by three different actors at three different periods of her life, Frame’s tender spirit and social anxieties make for a life of modestly monumental triumphs and gut-wrenching personal tragedies. We are joined by AJ and Richard of Cult Popture to help us understand the New-Zealand-of-it-all. If you’d like to watch ahead for next week’s film, we will be discussing and reviewing Jun Fukuda’s Son of Godzilla (1967).
Alex and Eric discuss the premier of fan favorite Godzilla nemesis, Mechagodzilla. Is Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla the perfect film for Jun Fukuda to go out on? When flesh meets steel, does Godzilla keep it's appeal? Find out on this episode of Monsters Vs Men!
In 1973, with with the most stringy of shoestring budgets and very little time, Jun Fukuda and Co. pumped out Godzilla vs. Megalon, the 13th entry in the Godzilla franchise. This film is as crazy as it gets, with robots who can grow giant through sheer force of will, Godzilla as a fighter-for-hire, and evil undersea people who use Easter Island as a giant phone to talk to their friends from Nebula Space Hunter M deep in outer space. But is this film the rock bottom as many people claim it is for our giant radioactive friend? Or is it a fun camp-filled ride? Listen and find out! Byrd and Matt are joined again by Kevin Derendorf (author of Kaiju For Hipsters, Maser Patrol blog) to review Toho’s kaiju/hero series Zone Fighter! With Japanese cinema nearly dead and the rise of Ultraman and Kamen Rider on TV, Toho of course got into tokusatsu hero game in the early 70s. For Zone Fighter, they enlisted some of their top talent, including directors Ishiro Honda and Jun Fukuda and special effects directors Teruyoshi Nakano and Koichi Kawakita, and suit maker Keizo Murase, among others. Although the series is known for its guest appearances by Godzilla, Gigan and King Ghidorah, the entire 26 episode run has lots more to offer than appearances of iconic Toho kaiju. We watched the entire series and are here to tell you all about it! Enjoy the conversation!
