Episode 281 It's Toho week! After last week's look at Godzilla Minus One, we realized that we've been lax in our old-Godzilla coverage. So this week, we'll continue that series with six movies from that period, in order! We'll start with the original “Mothra” from 1961, move on to “Mothra vs. Godzilla” from 1964, team up in the all-out battle against “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster,” also from 1964. Then we'll travel to Planet X with “Invasion of Astro Monster,” better known in the States as “Godzilla vs. Monster Zero.” The weekly newsletter this time around has two more: “Ebirah, Horror of the Deep” from 1966 “War of the Gargantuas” from 1966 Those two can be found at http://horrorbulletin.com Check out all our books with one easy link: https://brianschell.com/collection/horrorguys Psst: for the next five days, there's a free book available at hourlongpress.com, Stop in and grab it while you can! The double feature here is Dr. Death (1943) and The Communion Girl (2022). The latter got its wide release in 2023. It also doesn't make a great double feature, but my through line is trying to find the truth before it's too late, in different ways. Life is on the line in both. Also on this episode are Mini-Reviews of Christine (1983), Unwelcome (2022), The Latent Image (2022), The War of the Gargantuas (1966) and a couple episodes of original Twilight Zone. S2E2 Psychedelic Kaiju w/ War of the Gargantuas (1966) & Matango (1963) Kevin Moss from the Junk Food Dinner podcast joins Cory and Bob for the most wigged-out Japanese monster movies ever to come out of Toho Studios. First, it's the good Brown Gargantua vs. the evil Green Gargantua in a battle of land and sea elemental forces in the appropriately titled WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS (1966), an epic that rattled the minds of everyone from Guillermo del Toro to Tim Burton to friggin' Brad Pitt (who gushed about it once during The Oscars). It's also a favorite of Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO, who used to close out their set with "The Words Get Stuck in My Throat," the baffling-yet-catchy pop song that's ruined by Green Gargantua in the middle of the movie. Watch for it. The Gargantuas are about half the size of Godzilla or Rodan, and they don't have tails, so they move fast and hurl tanks like they're baseballs. Starring a decidedly unimpressed Russ Tamblyn from the original WEST SIDE STORY and the lovely Kumi Mizuno. Things get even weirder with our second feature, MATANGO (1963) aka ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE. Seven stranded castaways (or maybe a few more) are shipwrecked on an island where the only thing to eat are mutated mushrooms with the power to transform you into creepy toadstool creatures. It's kaiju meets full-on body horror. Kumi Mizuno is back for this one along with Yoshio Tsuchiya and Akira Kubo. Both of our films also feature the artistry of Gojira director Ishiro Honda and special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya, which makes Honda the most featured director on OLD MOVIES FOR YOUNG STONERS of all time, since we profiled his ALL MONSTERS ATTACK (1969) in Season One, Episode Six. We haven't even done Orson Welles or Fritz Lang movies yet, but we've featured three Ishiro Honda movies. Priorities! Big thanks to Kevin Moss for joining us. His indispensable JUNK FOOD DINNER podcast is streaming on Apple Podcasts and your favorite podcast app. You can learn more about it at junkfooddinner.com. All of Bob's Ishiro Honda knowledge in this ep comes from the excellent book, "Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film from Godzilla to Kurosawa" by Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski. Bob purchased the book from MZS.press, the bookstore run by movie and TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz out of his home. Highly recommended. Join us in March for our International Women's Day Episode with Agnès Varda's Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) and The Hitch-Hiker (1953) by Ida Lupino. Rog Franklin, Rest-in-Power. Co-hosts: Bob Calhoun & Cory Sklar. Greg Franklin and Philena Franklin are on assignment. Contact: oldmoviesforyoungstoners AT gmail DOT com

The importance of the movie poster is almost lost in this day and age. With the internet flooding social media with trailers, photos, and all sorts of advertisements, the poster art might get lost in the shuffle. But decades ago, it was the first thing used to promote an upcoming feature film. It had to reach out and grab hold of your eyes, telling your brain you need to see this film. Shortly after that, the poster collecting started. Why do we collect posters? What kinds are there? What is it about it that still holds a spell over movie goers? Join us and our special guest, Alan Tromp, as we try to answer all of those questions and more, as we discuss our own obsessions with movie posters, from one-sheets to British Quads to the French Grande size! Following up on their review of Frankenstein Conquers the World, your favorite kaiju hosts return to discuss its kinda, sorta, quasi-, pseudo-spiritual sequel - The War of the Gargantuas. It's a rip-roarin' rampage through this rubber-suited monster flick - a journey that leads you to maser cannons, tons of atmospheric lighting, a songstress that hasn't quite perfected her craft, Brad Pitt's origin story, and lots of Russ Tamblyn. On top of the film conversation, Jake and Jay highlight some of the biggest and best toy reveals from Super Festival Extra Volume 2 and go through Jay's army-building weekly pick-ups! Inspired by the titular Frankenbros, Charlie and Rabbit fight like Gaira and Sanda throughout the episode, calling truce for google breaks of course. Kal talks about the cult classic, War of the Gargantuas, in this episode! Divided into two parts, Kal talks about the film itself and the legacy that it created, and in part 2, Kal talks about the future of the show as well as branching out into different genres and media platforms in the future!
It's time to visit one of the strangest and most memorable non-Godzilla Toho monster mashes: The War of the Gargantuas! Ryan, Joanna, and Sam get to discuss human-eating politics, the religiosity of Masers, and Brad Pitt's weird obsessions. Along for the ride is Ryan's dad, who saw the movie in its US debut back in 1970! He's got plenty of fun memories and Boomer monster fan energy to guide us through this warm, fuzzy episode. Next episode, we'll be covering the entire first season of Godzilla Singular Point! Wish us luck! Godzilla and Evangelion have a mutual love affair going back decades in Japanese pop culture history. With Ryan having recently finished the original series, it's a good time to look back on these twin titans and the mother they share. Along for the ride is recurring guest and anime boy Matthew Charles! Look forward to our upcoming War of the Gargantuas episode! Godzilla's woefully cheap 70s days hit a new high (or low) with the infamous Godzilla vs. Gigan! Also known as Godzilla on Monster Island, this 2v2 beat-em-up can challenge even the most devoted Godzillavangelist. Fortunately, special guest SoSezJarvis joins forces with Ryan, Joanna, and Sam to talk space cockroaches, kaiju speech, robotic chickens, and more. Is this a fun comic book battle or just a sad chapter for the Big G? Next time will hopefully be our War of the Gargantuas episode, although there is a slight chance of a last-minute switch-up. Gargantuas, Gadamer, Yu-Gi-Oh-My! David and Chris finally get to one of the most famous kaiju films of all time: War of the Gargantuas. Not ones to shy away from controversy, they discuss the hype surrounding the movie, along with the application of the Cain and Abel motif to the two giant monsters, not to mention getting into detail about their respective analytical approaches to these monster flicks. Chris also does his best (see: worst) puns yet!
Long live the king! Godzilla: King of the Monsters has been unleashed. Kristen Romanelli, Dane Walker and Christopher Coleman rant and rage over the latest incarnation Gojira on the big screen. They reveal their own histories with kaiju-movies (The War of the Gargantuas, anyone?), their thoughts on Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017) and finally dive into some of McCreary's excellent work for the latest film. Stay tuned after the official close for some bonus talk about the film's end credit stinger and the destruction of Boston.Episode Highlights03:39 - Kaiju history10:16 - Godzilla 201418:53 - Godzilla: King of the Monsters - General film reaction29:41 - Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Score reaction (Spoilers!)36:28 - Stand out tracks (Spoilers!)49:12 - The rise of Bear McCreary (Spoilers!)56:40 - The future of the monster-verse (Spoilers!)67:18 - Bonus Track - End credit stinger and the destruction of Boston (Spoilers!)Music Selections 00:00 - "Godzilla Main Title" (Godzilla: King of Monsters) by Bear McCreary18:16 - "The Larva" (Godzilla: King of Monsters) by Bear McCreary20:18 - "A Mass Awakening" (Godzilla: King of Monsters) by Bear McCreary36:40 - "Godzilla Main Title" (Godzilla: King of Monsters) by Bear McCreary38:58 - "Welcome to Monarch" (Godzilla: King of Monsters) by Bear McCreary39:45 - "Rise of Gidorah" (Godzilla: King of Monsters) by Bear McCreary41:37 - "Outpost 32" (Godzilla: King of Monsters) by Bear McCreary42:37 - "Rodan" (Godzilla: King of Monsters) by Bear McCreary43:08 - "Queen of the Monsters" (Godzilla: King of Monsters) by Bear McCreary45:16 - "Godzilla (feat.
