February 23, 2005. New York City's culinary elite gather at Gotham Hall. Tuxedoed waiters pass around champagne flutes and decadent hors d'oeuvres, as famous chefs like Eric Ripert and Anthony Bourdain pose for photos and gossip with their peers before the night's main event: an announcement that could change their lives and the fate of America's dining scene. Édouard Michelin takes the stage. His company, Michelin, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of tires, but they also produce a restaurant guide that has dictated the fortunes of European restaurants for over 100 years. Now, the Michelin Guide, and its coveted stars, will be coming to America. When Michelin descends on New York City, which restaurants win? Which lose? And how does the battle itself transform American food culture? Special thanks to Peter Esmond, the former general manager of Per Se and current sales leader at DoorDash; Eric Ripert, chef of Le Bernardin in New York City; and Kathleen Squires, a food and travel writer whose work appears in the Wall Street Journal, Conde Nast Traveler and more. Thoughts and prayers as Ben powered through the show without his precious phone in hand...it was a RECURRING THEME. We did make a little time for Carson's Group Therapy wondering if his wife's two-month trip should worry him. Also played a Guess The TV Theme for Jesse McCartney tickets and did some learning about the interesting history of the Michelin Man! And then more whining from Ben about his phone...

Is the “often imitated, never duplicated” influential epicenter of all ingestible CPG categories ready to disrupt its next market? And while the “best and brightest sports nutrition brands are now (or will soon start) competing against large CPG incumbents in every functional food and beverage subcategory over time…this isn't another content piece about the competitive landscape “changing of the guard” happening within mega functional CPG markets like energy, hydration, or protein. Instead, I want to provide further support for another one of my ongoing sports/active nutrition predictions…which is more brands will begin disrupting the global stock markets. The inspiration for this content came from reading last week's UK financial news piece that confirmed earlier speculations around UK-based sports nutrition brand Applied Nutrition moving forward with plans for a potential late-2024 IPO on the London Stock Exchange…seeking to value the company at more than $1.25 billion. For those that are unfamiliar with the sports nutrition brand, it began in 2014 when Thomas Ryder acquired one of the small struggling supplement lines he stocked in his specialty supplement store…believing its main product Critical Mass was being marketed incorrectly. Applied Nutrition would then go through an extensive strategic overhaul of every element from redeveloping products to rebranding and even shifting production away from Canada and into Belgium before deciding to build a manufacturing facility a year later. In 2021, JD Sports (the British sports-fashion retailer) made a significant minority investment that valued the company at about $100 million. The following calendar year, Applied Nutrition sustained the momentum by landing its first major grocery listings in the UK at ASDA, launching its Body Fuel line extension that started with an RTD hydration drink to take advantage of the “PRIME Effect,” and creating its first overseas subsidiary in the United States. But about 9ish months after entering the U.S. market, “All Black Everything” became (from what I know) the first sports nutrition brand headquartered outside of North America to land on all 4600 or so Walmart locations across the country. With successful large retail expansion also happening in the UK market, the beginning of 2024 saw the Applied Nutrition IPO rumor mill start up. And this was further supported when the company brought in Andy Bell to be Chairman, a seasoned entrepreneur that had taken his own company public six years ago…and hired an investment bank to advise on the process. I'll explain that despite respecting the asset-heavy build model, consistent top- and bottom-line growth, and overall ethics of the founder/company...I believe the reported valuation sought is more inflated than the Michelin Man! Also, the final section will breakdown arguably the most important market for Applied Nutrition, which is also the largest in terms of global supplement sales...as big changes have happened recently (or will begin happening soon) within the U.S. subsidiary of Applied Nutrition. They answer a listener's question on why some people hang their microphones upside down - a technique often linked to protecting the microphone from overheating and avoiding dust accumulation on the capsule. They also introduce a discount code "trip a P 200" to get $200 off your Tribooth, recommended as the best vocal booth for home or on the road. Hi. Hello, everyone, to the Pro Audio Suite. These guys are professional. They're motivated.,Speaker A: Thanks to Tributh, the best vocal booth for home or on the road. Voice recording and Austrian audio making passion heard. Introducing Robert Marshall from source elements and someone audio post Chicago. Darren robert Robertson from Voodoo Radio Imaging. Sydney to the Vo stars. George the tech Wittam from La. And me, Andrew Peters, voiceover talent and home studio guy learner.,Speaker B: Here we go.,Speaker C: Welcome to another Pro audio suite. Don't forget, if you would like to get $200 off your tribooth, use the code trip a P 200. We had a question sent to us about microphone position particularly. Why would you hang your microphone upside down?,Speaker B: The answer is pretty obvious, if you think about it.,: To get to run all the blood out of it.,Speaker B: Yeah, that's right.,Speaker C: Yeah.,: So you can record Pink, who's famous for singing on stage, hanging upside down.,Speaker B: There you go. There's another good answer to dry it out. Well, there's that as well. That's right. Yeah, exactly.,Speaker C: Or you could record like Brian Wilson in a beanbag.,: I think the new thing with microphone should kind of be like how gangsters will hold the gun sideways. I think we do the gangster style sideways microphone.,Speaker B: Right.,Speaker C: But here's another reason, a serious one. And this is a fine example of a microphone that should be hung upside down. This is the Microtech Gafel M 92.1s, featuring the original M seven capsule. And inside is a valve, or for our American friends, a tube, the EF 86 tube, which, of course, generates heat. And what does heat do? It rises. Rises, affecting the capsule. But if you hang it upside down, it goes out the bottom.,: The heat avoids the capsule.,Speaker B: And we have a wiener.,: And there's another reason. And also it gets it out of the way of the script and all that stuff.,Speaker B: Yeah. And it looks cooler, too, I reckon.,: Yeah. Those are the practical reasons for voice actors.,Speaker C: The other reason you hang your mic upside down is dust as well. So you don't get dust inside the.,Speaker B: That'S a good one. Keep the dust off the capsule, probably. Yeah, absolutely.,: And you should turn the phantom off because a polarized capsule will attract dust.,: Oh, see, I've been trying to think of good reasons to tell people to turn off phantom. I usually tell people, don't worry, just leave it on.,: I'm pretty sure a polarized capsule will attract polarized dust.,Speaker B: There's the two schools of camp. There's the school that says, Leave it on because turning on and off all the time is crap. And there's the school that says Turn it off. Because for all the reasons we've just mentioned yeah.,: I think you should therefore just turn it on to, like, 24 volts phantom when you're gone.,Speaker B: You think so? Half?,: No, you're taking me seriously.,Speaker B: Are you standing by that robert, are you going to pay all the police pay because you my mic claims? Because I want nothing to do with that.,Speaker C: No, not absolutely. But I always turn everything off anyway.,Speaker B: When I yeah, I turn off it. I put my computer to sleep, but I turn everything else off. Yeah, absolutely. I think it's the best way. I mean, God knows what's going to happen.,: Sometimes if you leave stuff turned on and the right thunderstorm comes by, kaboom. But if it's turned off, it might not quite get hit as hard.,Speaker C: That's one thing well, I bet people don't have because I've got the what do you call it, the CyberPower thing. So if we do get a major surge, it blocks it.,Speaker B: Yeah, I've got surge protection stuff on mine. But I always come back to my grandmother, because if I was talking to my grandmother when I was living in a state, when I was working in radio and there was a storm coming, she'd say, oh, I better get off the phone, there's a big storm coming. Okay, right on and see you later down the phone. She made me paranoid.,: Especially if it was like the cordless phones you had at your house back in the day when cordless phones first came out and they had the big antenna. And there used to be this guy that would walk around the block and he's like, this is so great. Because it was 900. Could go a good distance farther than WiFi. But yeah, if you're walking around with a big antenna coming off like.,Speaker C: The umbrella.,Speaker B: So if you hang your mobile phone upside down, do you still get struck by lightning?,Speaker C: No, and don't hold me to that.,: Yes. Are you sticking with that one, Rob?,Speaker B: I didn't know that. I want that court case either.,Speaker C: No way.,Speaker B: Right.,: How about we make a pair of headphones that are purely metal band made to wear in the rain?,Speaker B: There you go. Put them inside the voiceover bodysuit. Yeah.,Speaker C: With a large antenna. Like a lightning rod.,Speaker B: Yeah, lightning rod for the voiceover bodysuit. There we go.,: They can have little pokey things that get a really good contact on your temple so that when the lightning hits.,Speaker B: It just goes like, oh, look at George. There we go. George has got the metal band on his headphones. Look at that. They're cool.,: I like, George, that's too bad.,Speaker C: You know what you could do, though, just to if you wore the metal headphone and you put a lightning rod sticking out the top, then you run a wire from each side down your body and then connects to a metal plate on the bottom of your shoe. By right, you should be earthed and you should be okay in a lightning storm.,: Right. You're doing the same thing as you do to a whole house.,: Yeah.,: And we might need to do this for the voiceover bodysuit. What's it called? The lightning rod. Isn't that what you install?,Speaker B: You know what it's called, Robert? It's called the self charging device.,: The voiceover bodysuit is so goddamn soundproof that you can use it in a lightning storm.,Speaker B: There you go.,: But you need the additional add on option of these.,Speaker C: The optional lightning rollers.,Speaker B: Just gets sillier and sillier. We got to do it one day. We got to come up with a prototype.,: Didn't you send a picture the other.,Speaker B: Day, the Michelin Man? The original Michelin Man. Yeah.,: Do you know why the Michelin Man was white? Was wrapped in white tires?,Speaker B: I didn't know that either until I saw that. I know what you're going to say, so I'm not going to answer that.,: See if anyone natural rubber back in the day was white.,Speaker B: Yeah, they're white.,Speaker C: Of course they used to be white.,Speaker B: Natural rubber is white until they started dyeing it black. That's why the Michelin man's white. Always wondered that.,Speaker C: Now I know because my grandfather was a chauffeur back in the 1920s. And the car he used to drive, I can't even remember what make it was now because it was so long ago since I've seen any photographs. But that had white rubber tires, which, being a chauffeur would have been a bitch because he had to clean them all the time.,: Clean them all the time, absolutely. I'm sure that's why tires are black now.,Speaker C: Yeah.,Speaker B: Was that where white walls came from? Because the tires were white? But then we were driving on the black bitumen road, so the rubber became black on the bottom. The sides were still white, maybe.,: Yeah, probably.,Speaker C: I think when they make white walls, they actually take the black off and it's white underneath.,: I think that's how they do it.,Speaker B: There you go.,: Yeah, they wanted that white look. They wanted that classic, like a tuxedo for cars.,Speaker C: Imagine if you had white tires and you did a burnout. It confused the shit out of people behind you. They go, what the hell is a lane marking here? What am I supposed to do?,: Yeah, all of a sudden, people are like, driving in your direction. If you did a big spinning burnout, they're like, oh, over here.,Speaker A: Oh, shit.,: Check it out online. There are some red tires, some blue tires, just so that when you do burnouts, it leaves crazy colors on the street.,: Yeah, you could get like a red, white and blue tire and then you could be very patriotic about your burnouts.,Speaker C: Yes, you could. You could.,Speaker B: You have to change the name of the show now. The Pro Audio Suite and Tire Chat.,: Yeah, just general brain spillage sponsored by Canadian Tire.,Speaker B: Well, that was fun. Virtually every foodie is aware of the Michelin Guide -- the last word in high-end restaurant ratings -- but originally came about as a way to sell more cars (and, ultimately, tires). In today's episode with research associate Geoff Bartlett, Ben, Noel and Max dive deep into the origins of the Michelin guide, as well as Michelin's iconic mascot Bibendum, the Michelin Man. Spoiler: the Michelin Man was originally the absolute worst mascot for anything related to driving. Tune in to learn why.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You guys are likely familiar with the Michelin Man, right? Big puffy guy made of white stacked tires? Kinda looks like the Stay-Puft Marshmallowman. You know the one. Anyway, not only are we currently being robbed of the glory that was the cigar smoking, ass kicking tire mascot, BUT there is also a number of sightings of an alien or monster that very closely resembles this familiar ad icon. Maybe those aren't stacked white tires, but a reminder that some sort of bastard abomination was sent from the stars to…smoke cigars and kick ass?http://thebiggeststudy.blogspot.com/2010/05/michelin-ufonauts-extraterrestrials-or.htmlhttps://youtu.be/Bukxq2uVfYk

When Close Encounters of the Third Kind was released to wide audiences, it was believed by some in the UFO community that it would have an impact on UFO reports. And yet it didn't. CEIII reports continued to vary during a time when UFO contact wasn't homogenous with reports of the grays, tall nordics and reptilian shape changers that has dominated much of UFO literature since the late 80s. That's not to say that culture has never influenced sighting reports. In 1947, with Kenneth Arnold's encounter with 9 objects that flew “like saucers skipping across water,” the reports that followed were often similarly described objects. And as 1950s science-fiction drew its inspiration from the cold war, the contactees reported encounters with beings not dissimilar to Klaatu Barada Nikto. Despite the influences of the period, pop culture archetypes didn't show up in sighting reports with the exception of one. From the mid 1950s onward, witnesses from across the globe have reported encounters with beings that resemble The Michelin Man, that enigmatic mascot for the Michelin tire company. Actor, writer, producer, and UFO investigator Steve Berg, known for his roles on The Good Place, Adventure Time, Drunk History, Tag, and the wonderful podcast, Voyage to the Stars, joins me to discuss these terrifying figures, their weird singular black boots, and why they suck so bad at walking on earth. Michael is the Co-founder and CEO of Oros Apparel and has also been featured on the Forbes 30Under30. Oros is a performance outerwear company that uses the same stuff NASA uses to insulate spacecraft - and transformed it into max-warmth, zero-bulk apparel. While backpacking across Europe, Michael decided to climb one of the tallest mountains in the Swiss Alps, but he looked like the Michelin Man (tons of bulk and layers of outerwear). He wanted to figure out a way to cut the bulk but keep the warmth, and that was the initial spark that started his quest for better insulation. While in college, he received a scholarship created by the Mercury 7 Astronauts — The Astronaut Scholarship. Through that scholarship, he learned about aerogel — this material NASA used to insulate things in space - and the rest is history. Michael and I discussed: What is Solarcore What is Aerogel What has been his biggest challenge as far as consumer education The advantage of being a young entrepreneur Who their key demographic is and why The capability of their technology Early-stage growth strategies Opening a physical retail location The importance of NASA The early history of the company And much more... Michael Markesbery My Take: Taking something that has worked for many years or even decades and reimagining it, is the work of dreamers, sometimes visionaries. Without visionaries, we would not have many of the advancements we so frequently enjoy and so easily take for granted. How To Start A Podcast Support The Podcast

Way before "restaurants near me" and Google reviews, Michelin created their stars system for restaurants to sell more tires. Listen to a tale of very successful content marketing. Dave Young Welcome to the Empire Builder Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us. But we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [Tappers Ad] Dave Young: Stephen, last week we talked about DoorDash. And this week on the notes I see we're going to talk about Michelin. Is this another food related podcast? Are we talking about restaurants with Michelin stars or are we talking about tires? Stephen Semple: You took away my punchline. Dave Young: Oh, no. Stephen Semple: Because I was going to ask, have you ever heard of the Michelin ranking for restaurants and have you ever wondered if it was tied to the car company? Ding, ding, ding. Dave Young: Ding, ding. Stephen Semple: Dave kind of gets a gold star, but at the same time kind of screwed- Dave Young: Oh, my first Michelin star. Stephen Semple: Your first Michelin star, and kind screwed up my opening. So for the people listening wondering whether we rehearse these openings, you now know we don't. Dave Young: No, of course we don't. Stephen Semple: But yes, we are going to talk about Michelin. Stephen Semple: So first a little bit about Michelin. Michelin's an old company. Michelin was founded on May 28th, 1898. Dave Young: Holy cow. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: 1898, okay. Stephen Semple: 1898, in Clermont-Ferrand, France, which is basically in the Alps. And it was founded by two brothers, Édouard and Andre Michelin. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: And today it is the largest tire manufacturer in the world. And as a bit of an interesting sidebar, the Michelin Man is one of the oldest trademarks in the world. That was trademarked back in 1894. Dave Young: Oh, wow. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Before the company? Stephen Semple: No, no, the company was 18, 18, oh, yes, yes. Sorry. Yes. Before they actually officially formed the company they had been selling tires. Dave Young: They had the Michelin Man. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: And the idea came when the brothers noticed a stock of tires that looked like a man and they said, "Let's create the Michelin Man. Dave Young: And back then there were a there were a lot of white tires, natural rubber was white. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: So yeah. Stephen Semple: Which is the reason why- Dave Young: I can see how that happened. Stephen Semple: And a lot tires were white walls and things along that lines. But you know you're doing well when you become part of pop culture. And one of my favorite things is I love the episode of when the Michelin Man was murdered by Chris Griffin in the Family Guy on behalf of Mr. Firestone. I just think that that's, you know you're big when that happens, when you're on the Family Guy, you know you're big. And maybe in the future we'll do a whole thing on the evolution of the Michelin Man as as a trademark and how it all came together. Stephen Semple: But back to the Michelin restaurants. So it started in 1900. In 1900, Michelin was by far the largest tire maker in France, but they had a problem. There were only 3000 cars in all of France. So when you're number one, and the market is small, how do you grow your business? Dave Young: You're going to have to get people to buy more cars and you're going to have to get people to want to ...
Season 3, Episode 7: Debbie Gets Plowed: This episode gets dirty real quick when Debbie shares how a not-so-quickie cured last week's rage (and apparently, her ankles can still touch her ears). Kerri and Debbie play FMK with the Brawny lumberjack, the Energizer Bunny, the Michelin Man, with a bonus Mr. Clean. The girls answer hypothetical questions, come up with a bizarre idea for a reality show, and play a little footsie under the table. There's something for (almost) everyone, so plug in those headphones and enjoy!
