The one where Godzilla goes to space, the one where Godzilla dances, the one where Godzilla and Rodan are mind-controlled by a race of leather-clad aliens from Planet X and, along with King Ghidorah, are sent to destroy humanity. Whoa. It's a sci-fi romp with Ishiro Honda doing his best to keep the wheels on track. Does he succeed? Put on your Xilien visors, hitch up your pants, and climb aboard this little model rocket ship to find out! Plus, we honor the late David Lynch, pay tribute to Nick Adams, and salute our Scandinavian listeners. Frankenstein's monster is a kaiju?! In one of the weirder entries in Toho's monster canon (localized as Frankenstein Conquers the World), the modern Prometheus is a regenerative caveman-like being born from the atomic bomb who grows to colossal size. Also, an adorable subterranean puppy comes from below to fight him. We talk about the very first collaboration between Toho and American producers, and the resulting conflict among Ishirō Honda's desire to honor the classic Frankenstein story, Toho's desire to make another giant monster movie, and America's desire to have a random octopus for some reason. On this episode of YHS on Monster Island, “The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh and Jay Key take a swing at the 1965 Toho release, Frankenstein Conquers the World. It has all of the makings of a golden era classic – Honda directing, Tsuburaya doing his thang, an Ifukube score, and cast chock full o' regulars like Kumi Mizuno, Yoshia Tsuchiya, Tadao Takashima, and Takashi Shimura, and even good ol' Nick Adams drops in to lead the way! On top of that, you have an alternative ending that makes absolutely no sense! But does all that, mixed with an original interpretation of the Frankenstein story lead to a top tier film? Hello, kaiju lovers! “FRONKENSTEEN! FRONKENSTEEN!” In what has to be a providential “accident,” our Halloween episode is the perfect kaiju film for the spookiest time of the year: Frankenstein Conquers the World. Nathan is joined by Travis Alexander, co-host of Kaiju Weekly and the biggest Baragon fan we know (#Justice4Baragon), to discuss this wild if uneven Toho classic directed by Ishiro Honda. We discuss the film's relation to the hibakusha, the discriminated survivors of the atomic bombings, because Frankenstein's plight in the film mirrors their real-life struggles. Also, Travis gets to meet Godzilla's bumbling nephew, Godzooky (he's practically Travis's spirit animal), who helps Jimmy From NASA in the producer booth because he's still reeling from his beatdown at the hands of Daimajin.  For more than two centuries now, the tale of Frankenstein has fascinated people, and your Planet 8 crew is no exception! In fact, we are huge fans of Dr. Frankenstein and his monstrous creation. Joining us to do a deep dive on the topic is our good friend, horror host and monster maven Lord Blood-Rah! So come on along with us, as we travel through the many permutations of the Frankenstein legend.Of course, we must discuss the source of the legend -the Mary Shelley novel. What might have been her inspirations? Was it the first science fiction novel ever written? And what implications does it still have for us today? The Universal films featuring Boris Karloff, and then later, Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi, and Glenn Strange, provided the classic look which most of us associate with the Monster, and which has permeated pop culture. These films had a definite arc for the character through at least the first three, and then the Monster suffered a real decline, being reduced to little more than a shuffling wreck. But the Universal Frankenstein Monster had little resemblance to Shelley's creature.Hammer films went on to do their own Frankenstein series, but focused on Dr. Frankenstein rather than the Monster. The doctor just can't help himself, he has to keep stitching bodies together! His creations never seem to come out the way he plans, though.Since Frankenstein is in the public domain, there have been tons of films made that either retell the Frankenstein story, or borrow the name quite liberally. One of the better ones we discuss is Frankenstein the Untold Story, a 1973 made for TV production that was aired on NBC, and featured Jane Seymour, David McCallum, and Michael Sarazin. This one is a little closer to the book, although it veers off from it too. And there's a shocking moment that none of us ever forgot! It wouldn't be Planet 8 if we didn't toss a little kaiju your way, so we'll bring in the Japanese Frankenstein connection -namely, Frankenstein Conquers the World, and War of the Gargantuas (aka the Frankenstein Brothers!)The story has crossed over into comics, and we'll discuss a few of them, from the Marvel series and black and white magazines, to Mike Mignola's Frankenstein character who appeared with Hellboy, and the beautiful Frankenstein, Alive, Alive illustrated by Bernie Wrightson. For our Sensor Sweep, all our instruments are focused on our wonderful friend, Lord Blood-Rah. If you haven't seen his show, Lord Blood-Rah's Nerve Wrackin' Theatre, you're missing out! Head on over to http://www.lordbloodrah.com/, and check his schedule to find where and how you can catch him. He's also putting together a DVD that collects material he has used in his live Halloween shows. The feature film on the DVD will be House on Haunted Hill, in 3D for the first time! Don't worry, a pair of 3D glasses will be included. Although Creatures Con was cancelled this year, a virtual Creatures Con was put together and you can see interviews and panels at the Facebook Creatures Con page. But next year, if we are free of this terrible pandemic, Creatures Con 2021 will be held August 8th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Concord, California, and will focus on the birth of the Universal Monsters! The special guest will be author David J. Skal, writer of The Monster Show and Death Makes a Holiday, as well as contributor of commentary on many Universal films. And Engineer Bob reminds everyone that the Arrow box set of Gamera films is out now, including his commentary with Keith Aiken on Gamera the Brave! Check it out!We hope you enjoyed this trip through all things Frankenstein. What's your favorite Frankenstein film? Do you like to focus on the doctor or the creature? Welcome to a special episode here on Planet 8! This is one we've been wanting to do for a long time, and with the help of our special guest, the incomparable Lord Blood-Rah, we finally explore the 1968 classic, Planet of the Apes. This is is one of our all-time favorite genre films. Planet of the Apes, or POTA as we like to refer to it, was a milestone in cinematic history. A serious, allegorical science fiction film that was only made possible through John Chambers' ground-breaking make-up techniques, POTA blew audiences away, especially with its shocking twist ending. We focus on the first film only (we plan to devote later episodes to the sequels), discussing  every aspect - the amazing make-up, including the early make-up tests; the script and the many changes it went through in the hands of Rod Serling, Michael Wilson, and others; the brilliant Jerry Goldsmith score; and the memorable scenes and dialog. The crew plus Lord Blood-Rah also take a look at each of the main characters and their complexities. Taylor, Zira, Cornelius, and of course, Dr. Zaius, all have their own agendas and the actors who portrayed them -Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowall, and Maurice Evans -did an incredible job.We might also dip into some other areas of POTA, like the TV show or the cartoon, the comics and novels, but just briefly. And we have questions! Like - who made the scarecrows in the Forbidden Zone? What happened to the Moon? What did Zaius know, and when did he know it? We're getting deep into apedom here people! Even so, POTA seems like an inexhaustible subject, and we'll be back at it soon with another episode. This time around, for the Sensor Sweep, we have two fantastic events to tell you about: On August 23, 24, and 25th, if you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, head to the historic Balboa Theater for Godzillafest! 12 classic Godzilla movies will be on two screens all weekend. Plus, special guest Godzilla director Michael Dougherty will be there all three days. Lord Blood-Rah will host films on Friday and Saturday night, including two of his favorites, Frankenstein Conquers the World and War of the Gargantuas. Check out Bay Area Film Events for all the details. On August 31st, enjoy an evening at the Chouinard Winery and take in Lord Blood-Rah's final 10th anniversary show! He'll have a great double feature: The Wolfman and Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman! Before the movies, you can enjoy wine tasting. Be sure to bring a picnic basket for the movie. Fifteen years later, scientists discover a feral boy who they believe is Frankenstein['s monster], regenerated from the lost heart; his disembodied limbs are ambulatory, and protein makes him huge. Meanwhile, a gigantic underground creature that everyone calls Baragon wreaks havoc across rural Japan. FAMOUS FOR: Being one of the kookier films in the Kaiju genre, and from original Gojira director Ishirō Honda no less. A giant monster is portrayed by an actor not wearing a rubber suit, which is somehow a great deal more disconcerting. And then there's that ending. PREPARE YOURSELF FOR: Frankenstein's hideous, horrible face. His mouth is always slightly open and his tongue seems swollen, pressed against his upper lip. It's really gross. I'd also say prepare yourself for the ending, but nothing can prepare you for the ending. NOTE! We didn't realize this at the time, but we watched the international cut of the film. If you watch the Japanese or American cut, you'll wonder why we thought the ending was batshit insane. So don't make that mistake. Also of interest: we are joined once again by Andrew's brother James, as excellent a podcasting guesthost as ever there was.Original post located at searchforschlock.com.
