The one where Godzilla goes to space, the one where Godzilla dances, the one where Godzilla and Rodan are mind-controlled by a race of leather-clad aliens from Planet X and, along with King Ghidorah, are sent to destroy humanity. Whoa. It's a sci-fi romp with Ishiro Honda doing his best to keep the wheels on track. Does he succeed? Put on your Xilien visors, hitch up your pants, and climb aboard this little model rocket ship to find out! Patrick is joined by Godzilla expert Sean to discuss two very different but still memorable sci-fi monster movies. It's Howard Hawks, it's the original clout chaser Nick Adams (not to be confused with Ernest Hemingway's short story protagonist), it's Godzilla, it's Ghidorah (spoilers), it's Rodan, and it's a vegetable monster that requires blood to survive. It's The Thing from Another World and Invasion of Astro Monster aka Godzilla vs. Monster Zero!
Godzilla goes to spaaaace! In a movie that's way more alien invasion space opera than kaiju, the hilariously-dressed Xiliens from Planet X introduce us to Monster Zero (aka Ghidorah) and get Earth wrapped in a convoluted plot involving trapping sleepy Godzilla and Rodan in bubbles. We talk the first American-Japanese co-production for Toho -- which includes a major role for Rebel Without a Cause's Nick Adams and a complex English/Japanese language shoot -- along with space lady clones, a backslide in character dynamics, and of course, Godzilla's famous little dance and its surprisingly important ramifications. ---- Help us nominate The Mixed Reviews for a Film & TV Podcast Award! Episode 281 It's Toho week! After last week's look at Godzilla Minus One, we realized that we've been lax in our old-Godzilla coverage. So this week, we'll continue that series with six movies from that period, in order! We'll start with the original “Mothra” from 1961, move on to “Mothra vs. Godzilla” from 1964, team up in the all-out battle against “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster,” also from 1964. Then we'll travel to Planet X with “Invasion of Astro Monster,” better known in the States as “Godzilla vs. Monster Zero.” The weekly newsletter this time around has two more: “Ebirah, Horror of the Deep” from 1966 “War of the Gargantuas” from 1966 Those two can be found at http://horrorbulletin.com Check out all our books with one easy link: https://brianschell.com/collection/horrorguys Psst: for the next five days, there's a free book available at hourlongpress.com, Stop in and grab it while you can! Hello, kaiju lovers! Godzilla Redux is in full gear with one of Big G's most quintessential films—and Jimmy From NASA's personal favorite, because reasons—Invasion of Astro-Monster (aka Monster Zero and Godzilla vs. Monster Zero). For this occasion, Nate is joined the Dapper Man himself, Kevin Joshua Burnham, who is a YouTuber, the co-host of The Bottom Shelf podcast, and a longtime fan of MIFV. Everyone's favorite angry Irishman dives deep into this film with Nate, discussing its making, its cast, and how it showcases the Japanese's very different sensibilities when it comes to alien invasion stories. Spoiler warning: the Xiliens aren't anti-American symbols. Before the broadcast, Jimmy tells Nate he has something he needs to show in his garage after the show. Afterward, Jimmy shows him the “museum piece” Cameron Winter bribed gifted him with: a Xilien saucer. But the big secret is what—or rather, who—is inside. Check out Kevin's YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/TheDapperMan) and The Bottom Shelf (https://geekdevotions.com/category/the-bottom-shelf/). The prologue and epilogue, “Sleeping Seijin,” was written by Nathan Marchand. What started out as an occasional Red Bull back in 1999 turned into a raging 2-3 a day habit that ultimately led to heart palpitations, mood swings, and a mouthful of cavities. I did this show to share my two-decade long addiction to energy drinks, how I got off of them, and why I did. After spending so many years drinking them and so many thousands of dollars buying them, I feel confident in saying that it's a terrible and wasteful habit. Although I love them and miss drinking them, my decision to quit on January 1, 2020 was one of the best health related decisions I've ever made. Caffeine addiction is relatively common and the U.S. spends upwards of $3 billion annually on energy drinks alone. Given the fact that other than the actual caffeine, there is very little (or nothing) beneficial to the human body in them. I never really thought I had a problem and figured it was normal to drink them all day, every day. I'd go to bed looking forward to my first sip of my Monster Zero and had cases of them lined up in my garage so I never ran out. I had quit a few times and gone through some serious withdrawal symptoms but always ended up back on them. I spent 20 years off and on (mostly on) drinking them daily and it wasn't until my girlfriend started expressing her concerns about my health that I started taking my addiction seriously. It got to a point where I couldn't even start my day without an ice-cold orange Monster Zero in my hand and my day revolved around the time I could drink my next one. Ironically, I didn't get any energy from them and in fact, it was the opposite. I felt like crap all the time and my heart would start beating erratically throughout the day, which made me nervous. And it was at the urging of my girlfriend that I finally committed to giving them up for good and that's exactly what I did at the start of 2020. Since then, I've adopted some much healthier habits and feel far better now than I did before. And I hope that my story helps you make a good decision if you're struggling with own energy drink habit.
It's a classic 60s throwback double feature as the Godzillavangelists go into overtime. This time they talk about Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (AKA Invasion of Astro-Monster) and Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster (AKA Ebirah, Horror of the Deep). It's title overload over here. Superfan Todd G. Levin is back to talk monsters, and boy is there a lot to chew on. One minute the inventor of a supersonic r*pe whistle is falling through a trapdoor, the next, a big shrimp is horrifically spearing innocent villagers. How will the Godzillavangelists survive? We have a special third anniversary show coming up, focused on that fan favorite Destroy All Monsters! Godzillavangelists is a satirical, critical work not affiliated or endorsed by Toho, Legendary Pictures, or anyone behind the Godzilla series. Visit our website at Godzillavangelists.com! We’re also on Twitter @Godzillacast, and Instagram @Godzillavangelists! And we have a Godzillavangelists Facebook page too!
Nick, Andrew, Evan, James, and Ike leap into a discussion of their favorite human characters in the kaiju film genre- which only gets as far as the showa era, because there are so many to talk about! (Also, a few Venusians and Xilliens may have snuck into this 'humans' list). Plus a deep-dive on Interpol, Toho spinoff series, Japanese-language puns, beneficial qualities in an all-knowing seer... and we re-write the book on the weirdest civilization to ever threaten the Toho-verse! Join us for a weird and rad ride!
Monster Zero is in the works! I believe I've mentioned looking into Phoneme databases, to use with the fungi biodata? Well, here we have some mycorrhizal fungi triggering numbers. As if it is counting out otherworldly lottery numbers, or perhaps numerical sequence end dates? ;p Actually, it is simpler than that! I was gifted a MicroFreak (Arturia)for use in an upcoming installation. This little synth has so many features! It is super fun, you can sculpt your own custom sounds, it is polyphonic, etc., etc. Here I had the fungi triggering a counting sequence, randomly. Fed into a Red Panda Particle (LOVE!). Meanwhile, I continue my research into phoneme bio-sonification. :) Thanks for stopping by! XO
If you're a dad who is struggling with your health and fitness, listen to this show. We have a transformation challenge coming up in January and this is one you absolutely want to be a part of if you're serious about changing your habits, diet, body, mental strength, and/or consistency. I'm calling it Project 45 and this it isn't a traditional "weight loss" challenge. This challenge is about mental toughness and sticking to something for 45 days, regardless of your excuses. Yes, you'll lose weight, get stronger, fitter, and healthier, but this is more of a mental game. What you accomplish will translate into every area of your life. You’ll come away with a new appreciation for what your body can do, your relationships with food and alcohol, and hopefully more inspiration and motivation to continue down the path to long-term health. I'm doing this myself as well because I lack the discipline I want. It will be as hard for me as it is for you and giving up things like my Monster Zero's is going to be brutal. We're busy dads. We have lives. We have careers and long commutes. We have families and kids sports. And we have excuses. A f*cking ton of them! We allow ourselves cheat meals, off days, and we cash it in far too often. We get lazy and demotivated and quit. This challenge will help you break those habits holding you back and kill your excuses why you can't do something. This isn’t about being perfect because that unrealistic. It’s about challenging yourself, committing to something and sticking to it even when shit gets in the way, which it always does. The rules are simple: • Commit to all 45 days long starting 1/1/20 • Following a diet (any healthy diet) with zero cheat meals • Follow the strength/conditioning training guide provided (or use your own) along with daily mobility work • Drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily You'll have all the tools you need to succeed and get through all 45 days. An accountability partner, a simple to follow guide, spreadsheet for tracking, and a daily check in calendar. In all honesty, this won't be easy for any of us, probably much harder than any of us can anticipate right now, but it will be worth it. When was the last time you stuck to something for 45 days and didn't quit even once? It’s about making a promise to yourself and keeping it. This challenge will take place in our Inner Circle program and you can learn more about what we do at https://www.fdnic.com/
When will these people stop harassing me? Enough is enough, honestly.
Ben talks about Monster Zero, a Godzilla movie his mother created a bootleg copy of from a VHS tape borrowed from a grocery store video rental chain. He watched it over and over again as a child, and from this humble beginning came a lifelong affection for Godzilla and other kaiju. Monster Zero features most…
The Godzillavangelists really stick their neck out this time, when they go to bat against the fandom and defend Son of Godzilla! Or at least, Ryan does, while Sam has a love affair with a striped shed and Joanna questions Godzilla's parenting techniques. Ryan's own sister Lauren visits the podcast to share some childhood memories and organize a slash-and-burn offense to protect Minya's honor. If you wanted to know more about the weirdo Sargent household, you'll get your chance on this ep. Next episode is ACTUALLY a double feature of Godzilla vs. Monster Zero and Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster! How it got mixed up is a complicated and boring story.

If there is one thing that the MCU can be blamed for, it's the rush to build a movie universe. DC tried, mostly failed, and had to soft reset; Universal's monsters went back into the vault only one film in; and now, sadly, Godzilla: King of the Monsters may have taken this burgeoning franchise down that same path. Unlike its 2014 predecessor, which was heavily criticized for its reluctance to show the titular monster, King of the Monsters doesn't only double down, it essentially quintuples down—stuffing the film with enough Titans (their moniker for the Kaiju) to fill a host of sequels to come. There's only one issue: That presumes there will be many sequels to come. In that way, it put the cart far ahead of the horse; whether you liked this film or not, it's undeniable that it is a flop. Of the three movies so far in the Monsterverse—2014's Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island being the others—this was the least successful, grossing almost $100 million less domestically than the film it was meant to be bigger and better than. Worldwide, it hasn't fared well either, lagging far behind both Kong and Godzilla (2014). Even worse, it wasn't just a disappointment financially. It was panned critically. Comparatively, at just 41%, its reviews were exactly 34% less favorable than the other two. Therein lies the problem. In attempting to course correct for 2014's methodical approach, it overshot. And it continued to bungle the other central element that plagued the first—the humans. Why, in a movie filled with incredible CGI creations, do we spend so much time with them? Believe me, it pains me to write this. Over a decade of my childhood is deeply intertwined with this character. As I've mentioned on the pod, I owned every VHS through 1995's Godzilla vs Destroyah. I desperately wanted this to work, so we could get the promised—and hopefully more proper—*Godzilla and King Kong showdown. Alas, it may not come to pass. If Kong vs Godzilla fares similarly, I fear the franchise is not long for the world. But, hey, it's not all doom and gloom. Join us as we take you through all the highs and lows of King of the Monsters, and if you love Godzilla, you may just learn a thing or two. So sit back, grab a Tricerahops Double IPA from Ninkasi Brewing, climb aboard the broad back of Monster Zero, and enjoy as I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), and Chumpzilla flee in terror from a whole host of titanic monsters with an environmental agenda! This Week's Segments: Introduction – We break down this epic monster throw down. (00:00) “Am I full of s**t or not?” – Chumpzilla attempts to debunk or confirm facts I discovered while investigating the interwebs—both about the film, as well as about the legendary character's history. (45:55) Name That Kaiju – Can Chumpzilla name the Kaiju from Godzilla's rich stable with simply a description of my own construction? (1:03:50) Recommendations – We offer our picks of the week. (1:08:45) And, as always, hit us up on Twitter (@HopsandBOFlops) to check out all the interesting factoids—Godzilla's dust up with Sir Charles, his obsession with caffeinated drinks, and more—from this week’s episode! *The original Toho version is bad even by people stomping around in rubber suits standards; that's not my Kong.

For years, Godzilla '98 has been buried by Ryan, hoping never that the Godzillavangelists would have to speak its cursed name. But when G98 arises from its tomb, our holy duty is to watch and mock its wacky ass. Mackenzie Marlowe joins the Godzillavangelists to marvel at one of the greatest bad movies of all time. History (and Hollywood) can't help but show, again and again, how nature points out the folly of man, and usually it's with a giant, radioactive, morally-ambiguous lizard beating the ever loving snot out of some monsters. Now THAT'S an environmental lesson we can all get behind! It's been many a years since Gareth Edwards rose a new Americanized big budget Godzilla from the depths. It may not have been perfect, but with the release of Michael Dougherty's damn fine roller-coaster ride of a sequel, it is the perfect cinematic equivalent of "I set 'em up, you knock 'em down!" And boy, did Dougherty knock 'em down! Aided by one hell of a cast, some killer effects, new and fascinating allegories, a surprisingly engaging human story, and more Monster Zero and Mothra action than you can shake a Rodan at, GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is a Kaiju slug-fest that all others should bow down to! I mean, Rodan definitely will, but he'll bow to a startling breeze. So, with a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound, pull some high-tension wires down with us as we dissect the intricacies of this Toho love letter! Toho Studio's Monster universe takes another turn for the weird in this science fiction epic! This movie introduces the soon to be reused idea of alien invaders taking control of the giant monsters and creating large scale destruction in the hopes of worldwide conquest. No one should have trusted those Emo looking freaks anyway. Just look at those evil glasses! As this is the immediate follow up to GHIDORAH it is very strange that the American release avoided that name entirely and went with MONSTER ZERO. I guess that Ghidorah just doesn't have the same box office appeal as Godzilla which still doesn't explain why they didn't title it Godzilla Goes to Planet X. Which would lead to my favorite possible crossover ever - Buckaroo Banzai Meets Godzilla! (Does anyone get that reference?) We take a look at this one with the switch being that this time out I am not the one synopsizing the movie's events. Troy leads this dance through two worlds, three giant monsters, two affable astronauts, dozens of evil aliens and a host of Kumi Mizuno clones. Yeah- this one has plenty of things to talk about! We discuss the American actor Nick Adams as he rages against the alien horde and chases after a lovely lady. We dig into the ideas and plot threads that are brought up and left dangling as the movie speeds toward its conclusion along with the ways this film points to how the future Toho SF movies would shift in tone. Troy comes armed with some interesting information on the amount of screen time the monsters get in this picture making for some interesting questions about what audiences want verses what they actually get. I get to express my love for trap doors and also muse on the possibility of alien monsters made of funnel cake. I might have gotten carried away with that last one. Of course, this being a conversation between Troy and I we can't stop ourselves from beginning the show with a couple of completely of irrelevant topics. OK. To be honest, it was just me talking about 1970's Marvel comic books and Edgar Rice Burroughs adventure novels but Troy could have stopped me at any time with a bat or a bucket of water! And the tangent we take near the end of the show is all on him! If you want to comment on our lack of professionalism and inability to stay on a single topic please write us at thebloodypit@gmail.com and we'll get back to you with our defense. Thanks for downloading an listening. If you listen through iTunes please rate and review us over there as it really helps get more eyes on us.

However, in this Making Comics Gutter Talk episode with artist and creator Joe Badon, it seems that's exactly what happened; Adam has met his soul-twin and he's a damn fine artist. And not only is he an artist in the drawing sense, but Joe is also an artist in the musical sense. Today's episode opens with a song called "Monster Zero" from Joe's band The Band That Wouldn't Die. It's a bit experimental but we dig it just the same. It's perfect to draw or write to, if not both. This episode is yet another strong example of why being around like-minded peers in a community is an important part of not just becoming an artist but being one, as well. There's always a certain comfort level during the growing process in knowing not only are you not alone but you're more alike with others than you may have originally thought. Your ideas, concerns, goals, and sometimes even the same dreams. When you meet someone with these things, you know you're in for a fantastic conversation. Download this episode and listen in as Adam is joined by Joe to discuss all things comics. And politics. And other random tangents that seem to happen in Gutter Talk podcasts on a regular basis. By this time, though, you should just be used to it, right? Here it is, folks! The commentary that August Ragone and I recorded at G-Fest XXII is now available to download. So basically, I wanted to do something special and different for my favorite movie, Toho’s 1965 epic creation: Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (Kaiju Daisenso). And during his last visit, well-known kaiju historian and author of Eiji Tsuburaya: … Continue reading

X-Day is coming, so a great "Planet X vs. Classic X-Day Songs" opening assembled itself from songs by King of Slack Bill T. Miller, ESO, The Kirkendahl Void, and The Mondo Retardo Band (Lonesome Cowboy Dave) -- combined with sacred movie dialog clips regarding MONSTER ZERO, selected by Mister Sister. But after that had been played, and the "ON AIR" light went on, and Lonesome Cowboy Dave called in, we proceeded to go off on miriad tangents and didn't talk about X-Day much at all. Dave took advantage of an unusual technical problem in the studio, an inadvertent reverb caused by the phone line inexplicably staying loud on preview speakers that are supposed to automatically shut off whenever the mics are live. After failing to defeat it, we rode the glitch. Government monitoring of private communication is discussed (but probably not even monitored). A few items of gossip heretofore kept secret regarding upcoming future SubGenius events are leaked, mainly concerning Pittsburgh Devival June 22 and X-Day/Starwood the first two weeks of July. THEN it gets WEIRD.
