Superman has returned to the movies, so we thought it was a perfect time to revisit 2006's SUPERMAN RETURNS! The Bryan Singer-directed superhero sequel was meant to revitalize the Man of Steel's movie fortunes in the mid-aughts, but it failed to take flight, leading to nearly two decades of studio indecision. We certainly have some thoughts on this would-be-epic, from its fraught production history to its eventual evaluation, and we go through it all in this extended conversation, which you can listen to on its own or while watching along with us!

Our month long look at Superman on screen continues. After the failure of Superman IV: Quest for Peace, Warner Brothers worked with half of Hollywood trying to reboot the franchise throughout the 90s and early 00s. Finally, they turned to X-Men director Bryan Singer, resulting in 2006's Superman Returns. Superman Returns introduced the world to Brandon Routh, another newcomer taking on the role of Clark Kent. Pitched as an “homage sequel” to Superman and Superman II, the film begins with Superman returning to Earth after a 5-year long search for any remnant of Krypton. Unfortunately for him, Lex Luthor is cooking up a new evil plan. Even worse? Lois Lane is engaged to someone else! Singer's film was both criticized and praised for an approach that gave greater focus to the romantic relationship between Superman & Lois as opposed to frequent action sequences. Our hosts break down whether or not this approach works, discuss Routh's performance, and consider this film's place in the superhero canon. Plus, our new social media manager Chelsie Padilla joins at the end of the show to share her thoughts on her favorite Superman film. Plus, our quick thoughts on F1, Elio, and Karate Kid: Legends! Who's your favorite Superman actor? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com!

Frank and Squeaks dive headfirst into James Gunn's Superman, the movie that's recharging DC with new energy and old-school heart. They break down everything—from the pacing that mimics a stack of comics, to character performances, visual highs and lows, and why this might be one of the most human versions of Superman we've ever seen. They also debate Guy Gardner's scene-stealing turn, Lex Luthor's layered villainy, the potential setup for Bizarro, and what it all means for the future of the DC Universe. This one's packed, passionate, and full of geeky joy. Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 Welcome and Opening Thoughts 00:27 Initial Reactions and Hype Level 01:13 Fast Pacing and Comic Book Feel 02:10 James Gunn's Signature Style 03:30 Thoughts on the Plot and Accessibility for New Fans 04:20 Lex Luthor's Role and Future Setup 05:36 All-Star Superman Comparisons 06:00 Kryptonian Parents Twist and Its Impact 08:30 Cancel Culture and Superman's PR Weakness 09:58 Mr. Terrific and the Unexpected Standout 11:00 Guy Gardner's Surprising Depth and Humor 13:15 Hawkgirl and the Performance Letdown 15:00 The New Superman: Human, Hopeful, and Heroic 18:16 Lois Lane's Portrayal and Rachel Brosnahan's Performance 20:00 Daily Planet Crew: A Bit Too Involved? 22:30 Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor and the Two-Layered Villain 25:00 Engineer and Ultraman Discussion + Bizarro Theory 29:00 Visual Storytelling and Cinematography Highlights 32:00 CGI Thoughts and Krypto's Role 36:00 Green Lantern Constructs: Unique and Personality-Driven 38:30 Superman's Power Progression and Final Battle 40:30 Tone and Themes: Can This Superman Fit with Batman? 43:00 Final Thoughts on Justice League Potential 44:00 Favorite Scenes and End-Credit Surprises 47:00 Final Scores and Rewatchability 50:00 IMAX Worthy? Our Theatrical Recommendation 51:00 Closing Remarks Key Takeaways: James Gunn's Superman blends nostalgic charm with a modern, fast-paced narrative. David Corenswet's Superman is emotionally grounded and feels deeply human. Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, delivers a fresh take that balances public genius with private obsession. Guy Gardner and Mr. Terrific both exceed expectations, with standout scenes that highlight their personalities. The film's pacing mirrors a comic book run—nonstop but rewarding. The twist about Superman's Kryptonian parents adds emotional weight without breaking canon. Visual storytelling uses lighting—especially sunlight—as a powerful symbolic tool. Bizarro may be hinted at for future films, adding another exciting layer. While some characters like Hawkgirl were underwhelming, others like Krypto left a lasting impact. Quotes: “This is the Superman I pretended to be when I was running around the house as a kid.” – Frank “Lex Luthor isn't trying to rule the world—he's just obsessed with stopping Superman.” – Squeaks “It feels like you picked up a stack of DC comics and read them in one sitting.” – Squeaks “David Corenswet might be the most human Superman we've seen on screen.” – Frank Call to Action: Love what you heard? Andrew & Tara CONTINUE Their Road to James Gunn's Superman giving their Superman Returns Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review!! Join Andrew Gordon & Tara Erickson as they soar back to the Man of Steel's world in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns (2006). After a five-year absence, Clark Kent / Superman (Brandon Routh, Dodgeball, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) returns to Earth only to discover that his love, Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth, Blue Crush, 3000 Miles to Graceland), has moved on—and even has a young son, Jason. As Clark grapples with heartbreak, he uncovers a nefarious plot by Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey, American Beauty, The Usual Suspects) to use stolen Kryptonian technology to reforge the world in his image. Rounding out the stellar cast are James Marsden (Cyclops in X-Men, Enchanted) as Lois's fiancé Richard White, Parker Posey (the “Queen of Indies” in Party Girl, Best in Show) as tabloid editor Kitty Kowalski, Sam Huntington (Disturbia, I Am Number Four) as earnest photographer Jimmy Olsen, Frank Langella (Oscar-nominated for Frost/Nixon) as Perry White, and Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar, Designated Survivor) as Richard's brother, Stanford White. The spirit of Superman's father, Jor-El, is heard in archive audio of Marlon Brando (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now), tying this chapter back to the character's origins. Don't miss Tara & Andrew's breakdown of the film's most iconic moments—from the breathtaking sequence where Superman slows time to save Lois and Jason in that penthouse fall, to the jaw-dropping finale atop Lex's oceanic fortress, where Superman confronts a golden statue come to life. We'll discuss the soaring flight through Lois's apartment, the emotional “son of Krypton” reveal, and how Superman Returns balances nostalgia with new stakes for Earth's greatest hero. Visit https://huel.com/rejects to get 15% off your order Roxy Striar & Tara Erickson head back to Glenville Sanatorium in Declan O'Brien's 2011 prequel Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, which reveals the origin of the Hillicker cannibals. In 1974, the deformed Hillicker brothers—Three Finger, Saw Tooth, and One Eye—spark a blood-soaked riot at the asylum, massacring staff before disappearing into the woods. Fast-forward to 2003: nine Weston University students—Kenia Perrin (Jenny Pudavick, Project Greenlight), Sara Washington (Tenika Davis, Diablo 3), Bridget Manalo (Kaitlyn Wong, Superman Returns) and their friends—snowmobile into a blizzard and take refuge in the same abandoned ward, unaware that the brothers still lurk within. What follows is a march of terror worthy of the franchise: Porter's grisly kitchen butchery, Claire's barbed-wire hang and decapitation, and the brutal trap that turns Kyle's desperate barricade into a fatal mistake. The girls' frantic fight leads to a harrowing outdoor snowmobile chase—complete with a razor-wire snare that decapitates the last survivors—while Three Finger hauls the severed heads away in his tow truck. Our hosts break down every ingenious kill, the bone-chilling asylum riot flashback, and the film's relentless winter-horror atmosphere that cements Bloody Beginnings as a cult favorite. Frank and Jonathan rate Andor's Season-2 finale a near-perfect 9/10, debate the brand-new Superman trailer, and break down Marvel's first Ironheart footage. Ironheart promises a scrappy, community-driven story that contrasts Tony Stark's privilege with Riri Williams' Chicago roots. The new Superman trailer revives the Christopher Reeve optimism while dropping viewers into a fully populated DCU. AI voice clones (like Fortnite's Darth Vader) are hype-worthy but need tighter safeguards before brands unleash them. Richard Sparks' New Rock series mixes MMO mechanics, 80s fantasy, and laugh-out-loud camaraderie—perfect for fans of Ready Player One and Willow. Memorable Quotes “Andor proves real rebellion relies on janitors jamming door locks, not just Jedi with lightsabers.” – Frank “Riri Williams is Iron Man if Tony grew up on the South Side and had to build a Mark I from junkyard scraps.” – Frank “AI Vader sounded amazing…until the Internet taught him four-letter words.” – Jonathan Call to Action Love the show? Join Andrew Gordon and Aaron Alexander as they unravel the intricate web of crime and deception in the 1995 cult classic, The Usual Suspects. Written by Mission: Impossible & Jack Reacher scribe, Christopher McMcQuarrie, & Directed by the once-prolific Bryan Singer (X-Men, Superman Returns), this iconic crime thriller follows a group of small-time criminals whose lives become entwined in a mysterious plot masterminded by the elusive Keyser Söze. Kevin Spacey (L.A. Confidential, House of Cards, Being a Weirdo on YouTube Now) delivers a mesmerizing performance as the unassuming "Verbal" Kint—whose seemingly ordinary tale conceals a shocking secret. Alongside him, Gabriel Byrne (Hereditary, End of Days) shines as the enigmatic Dean Keaton, while Stephen Baldwin (Bio-Dome, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas) and Benicio del Toro (Sicario, Traffic, Guardians of the Galaxy) add to the film's compelling ensemble. Kevin Pollak (A Few Good Men) rounds out the cast with his memorable portrayal of Todd Hockney, along with appearances from Chazz Palminteri (Bullets Over Broadway), Pete Postlethwaite (Inception, The Town), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Do The Right Thing), Clark Gregg (The Avengers), and MORE! Andrew & Aaron break down every iconic moment—from the tension-filled interrogation scenes to the climactic reveal that has defined the film's legacy + The Lineup, Kobayashi's Proposal, Who's the Gimp?, I'm Smarter than You, New York's Finest, The Greatest Trick the Devil Ever Pulled, & Beyond!! Does this hold up as one of the GREATEST crime films of all time???
