There's nothing quite like enjoying an ice cold beer at a major league baseball game, or a minor league baseball game, or any baseball game really. But while it can be enjoyable, sports and alcohol have the potential to be a dangerous mix, and some fans can drink too much and potentially cause mayhem. Now what if your favorite team decided to hold a promotion that would sell beers for just 10 cents each at an upcoming game? What if, on top of that, your team isn't winning much of the time, causing you to be frustrated with them? That was the exact scenario for the Cleveland Indians when they decided to hold such a promotion for a game against the Texas Rangers on the night of June 4, 1974. The 10 Cent Beer promotion was intended to draw more fans to a game for a team that had been struggling with fan attendance. Initially, they were successful in that objective. However, by the end of the night, it would go down in history as one of the most memorable nights ever in all of sports, for all the wrong reasons. Special thanks to Robin Warder, host of the podcast "The Trail Went Cold", for contributing his voice in part of this episode! Early in the evening on July 18, 1959, Dr. Bernard Finch and his girlfriend, Carole Ann Tregoff, drove from their Las Vegas love-nest to the Finch home in the Los Angeles suburb of West Covina to speak to his wife Barbara about obtaining a speedy divorce in Nevada. But the plan went awry and the conversation turned deadly with Barbara’s lifeless body ending up in her in-laws’ backyard next door. After a high-speed chase with police, Finch was arrested the next morning in Las Vegas and charged with Barbara’s murder. Then, during his court hearing in West Covina, Carole was arrested on the witness stand and charged as his accomplice. Soon others were named as part of a larger conspiracy. But who were they and what parts did they play in these deadly events? It is without a doubt that Frank Sinatra is one of the biggest legends in music history. He sang many classics with his powerful, yet very smooth voice. He was a movie star, an iconic showman, and he hobnobbed with a variety of influential and powerful figures, from politicians to mob bosses. And his son Frank Jr hoped to follow in his footsteps. But father and son Sinatra, along with the rest of the family, would find themselves at the center of a terrifying ordeal in December of 1963, when Frank Jr was kidnapped and held for ransom over 2 and a half days. With the country still reeling in the wake of the JFK assassination, the story of the most famous entertainer in the world being caught up in a kidnapping scheme involving his own son, would add on even more drama. After a tense 54 hour ordeal, the ransom would be paid and Frank Jr would be released, and then the culprits would immediately be captured. In the aftermath that followed, many questions would be raised: Why Sinatra? What could be the motive? And a very shocking question put forth, could Frank Jr have actually had a hand in the plot of his own kidnapping? Mariann Colby was a seemingly normal housewife living in the upscale town of Shaker Heights, Ohio. But she would do something inexplicable on August 24, 1965 that would question how normal she really was, when she shockingly murdered an 8 year old neighbor named John Cremer Young Jr, who was a playmate of her own son. She would claim insanity despite taking steps to cover up the crime and giving plenty indication that she knew what she was doing. To this day, there are still questions about what could truly cause her to do something so horrific. Like social media, online gaming allows millions of people around the world to connect with each other on a daily basis. Much of the time, gamers can develop a friendly rivalry with certain other gamers and have some fun natured trash talking while still being respectful of one another. Then there are other gamers who throw respect out the window and can be vicious and even downright offensive. But even then, that world ceases to exist when we turn off the console or log off the computer. But what about those rare instances where the world of online gaming crosses over into the real world and can have potentially devastating consequences? I'm talking about the tactic pulled by some gamers known as Swatting, in which police are called and dispatched to the home of a rival gamer with a made up story of some horrible crime taking place. And one gamer who became known as a master for pulling this tactic was Tyler Barriss, who went by the gamer tag SwAutistic. While a dedicated detective worked tirelessly to track him down before anyone could really be hurt, in the end an innocent man named Andrew Finch ended up being killed as a result of one of Tyler's swatting pranks. Many know Lou Pearlman as the mogul behind the creation of legendary boy bands Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC, but the man had a very shady side to him. While his financial battles with the two groups would be made public, no one truly knew the level to which he was scamming not only the two groups, but all the investors he got involved in his different businesses. When it was all discovered, Lou had scammed everyone out of more than $300 million, the largest Ponzi scheme in American history before Bernie Madoff.
