What would you do if you won the lottery? We discuss that plus more as we unravel how a lottery win turns into a deadly curse in Gilly Macmillan's novel, "The Manor House." In the novel, we meet childhood sweethearts Nicole and Tom, and we see how their lives are transformed overnight after winning the lottery. But when Tom is found dead, Nicole's world crumbles and she quickly discovers that with big money comes big problems and even threats. So, in this episode, Gilly and I talked more about her book, and we had so much fun playing "So Gilly Won The Lottery" to discover what she would do if she had a golden ticket.BOOK:The Manor House by Gilly Macmillan on Amazon or Bookshop. Gilly Macmillan joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about her latest thriller, THE MANOR HOUSE. The premise is a fun one as a couple wins the lottery, and they set out to spend their winnings wisely. They first build a beautiful glass house with all the bells and whistles that one might want. It's just brilliant. But mere pages into the book, one of them is found dead in the swimming pool. What happened? Was it foul play, or was it an accident? This is a book with so many twists and turns, and Gilly had lots of fun writing them. Plus, all that tech talk as the house performs as planned (or does not) just adds to the intrigue. Carol and Gilly talk about yoga for a bit. Also, Gilly shares that there is one question that Carol brings up that no one else has asked her about. And it just might surprise you! We are back after a week off with two newer releases to recommend! First up, Lauren discusses a 5-star read that got her out of her big reading slump, "The Long Weekend" by Gilly MacMillan! Then Joe talks about the creepy new thriller "The Shadow House" by Anna Downes! Next week on the podcast: "Daisy Jones and the Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Bestselling author of THE NANNY, Gilly Macmillan, joins the podcast to discuss her newest thriller, THE LONG WEEKEND. Set in the isolated Dark Fell Barn, where three women are on edge as they receive a threatening note that one of their husbands will be murdered. Gilly talks with Olivia about the characters, the importance of the isolation of the environment for building the tension, and an old movie called “A Letter to Three Wives” that sparked her idea. “It's a kind of messy process but it's the only one I know, really,” she says of working her way from first draft to a significantly different final draft. THE LONG WEEKEND was published by William Morrow on March 29,2022. A Moment With Margaret: recommendations based on other popular books. If you liked Grady Hendrix's THE FINAL GIRL SUPPORT GROUP, pick up FINAL GIRLS from Riley Sager. If you enjoyed Rebecca Serle's ONE ITALIAN SUMMER, then add MEET ME IN PARADISE, by Libby Hubscher, to your TBR. For fans of THE WIFE UPSTAIRS, read Carter Wilson's THE NEW NEIGHBOR.
Gilly Macmillan talks to Carol Fitzgerald about her latest locked-room thriller, The Long Weekend. The book begins with a group of women who travel to an isolated part of England ahead of their husbands for a week away. As soon as they arrive, a note from “E” tells them one of their husbands has already been killed. “E” is Edie, who used to be part of one of the couples who took this annual trip, but her husband died the year before. With no cell service and treacherous walk to the nearest landline, they are trapped. Gilly talks to Carol about how she wanted to take this opportunity to write something fast and thrilling. She discusses how she found her characters through multiple drafts and how she laced the twists in. Carol said that it was a novel that reminded her of Ruth Ware in that it was both fun and terrifying. And yes, they talk about what's next. Eddie was working in a bridal shop in Flushing, Queens, 'til this podcast came along and truly changed the world! Aside from never reading any books and obnoxiously interrupting anyone who has, Eddie's many talents include: Never letting this Nanny joke go, killing it at karaoke (as in straight up murder for the ears), and just being generally handsome and wonderful. What's that, you ask? What is the episode about? Oh, just some great books (think Gilly MacMillan & C.J. Tudor) and films (Stephen King's 80's masterpiece Christine) … but back to Eddie!_______________________________________________ If you like what you hear, we'd really appreciate if you sent us some stars on iTunes!
