Episode 81 A fire, a flawed science, and a state that still hasn't learned. In 1991, Cameron Todd Willingham was convicted of setting the house fire that killed his three young children. Despite a mountain of later evidence debunking the “arson indicators” used against him, Texas executed Willingham in 2004—long after leading fire scientists warned that the case rested on junk science. Two decades later, Texas is preparing to repeat history. On October 16th, the state is scheduled to execute Robert Roberson, a man condemned under similarly discredited forensic theories and medical misunderstandings that doomed Willingham. The very science that convicted him has since been proven false, yet the machinery of “justice” continues to grind forward. In this first installment of our Texas Justice series, we revisit the Willingham case: How old-school fire investigation methods created a template for wrongful arson convictions The experts who tried to stop an execution built on myth The political forces that refused to listen—and what that refusal means for Robert Roberson today Help Stop Robert Roberson's Execution!!! Ever wondered why some students struggle despite hours of studying while others seem to master information efficiently? Cognitive psychologist Dr. Daniel Willingham, author of the book Outsmart Your Brain: Why Learning is Hard and How You Can Make It Easy joined us to discuss the fascinating science behind this phenomenon, explaining that most college students succeed despite their study strategies, not because of them. Dr. Willingham explained why we're naturally drawn to inefficient learning methods that feel productive but yield disappointing results. He compares these approaches to "doing push-ups on your knees" – they seem easier and faster, but they don't build the mental strength needed for deep learning. Parents will find particular value in Dr. Willingham's three-part framework for supporting student success: set high expectations, express confidence they can be met, and provide support in meeting them. Whether your student is thriving or struggling, these evidence-based approaches can transform their college experience by making learning more efficient and effective.Thank you for listening! Today, we are joined by Dr. Daniel Willingham.Dr. Daniel T. Willingham is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia, known for his work applying cognitive psychology to K-16 education. He earned his B.A. from Duke University and his Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Harvard University. Initially, his research focused on the brain basis of learning and memory, but he later shifted his focus to the practical applications of cognitive science in education. He is the author of several books, including Why Don't Students Like School?, When Can You Trust the Experts?, and The Reading Mind.In this continuation of our conversation, we explore the practical applications of cognitive science for learning and development. Dr. Willingham breaks down complex concepts around knowledge, intelligence, expertise, and practice while challenging common misconceptions about how we learn. From understanding what IQ really measures to debunking the myth of general critical thinking skills, he provides evidence-based insights that reshape how we should approach learning both in educational settings and professional development.Key topics include:-Why background knowledge is essential for retaining new information and understanding context -The relationship between knowledge and skills and why they cannot be separated -How chunking works and why experts see patterns that novices cannot recognize -The two components of IQ: fluid intelligence (working memory) vs crystallized intelligence (knowledge) -Why IQ can be changed and what it actually measures versus what people think it measures -The progression from rote to shallow to deep knowledge and when each is appropriate -How experts organize knowledge differently than novices, not just know more -Why knowledge transfer is so difficult and domain-specific, even within similar contexts -Whether critical thinking can be taught and the limitations of general thinking skills -The essential role of practice in learning and why there are no shortcuts to proficiency -Deliberate practice principles and how to identify weaknesses to improve systematically -Three forces that shape learning mindset: social comparisons, friendships, and family values -Why adults need to shift from grades-based to application-based measures of success -The challenges and opportunities AI presents for effective learning strategiesWhether you're designing training programs, teaching others, or working to improve your own learning, Dr. Willingham's research-backed insights challenge popular but ineffective approaches and provide a clearer understanding of how learning actually works.Dr. Daniel Willingham's Books: danielwillingham.com/booksDr. Willingham's Website: danielwillingham.com-Website and live online programs: http://ims-online.comBlog: https://blog.ims-online.com/Podcast: https://ims-online.com/podcasts/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlesgood/Twitter: https://twitter.com/charlesgood99Chapters:(00:00) Introduction(01:40) Why Background Knowledge Helps Retain New Information (06:00) Chunking and How Experts Organize Knowledge Differently(08:00) The Two Components of IQ and Why It Can Be Changed (12:00) From Rote to Shallow to Deep Knowledge(15:00) Why Knowledge Transfer Is So Difficult and Domain-Specific (20:00) Can Critical Thinking Be Taught as a General Skill? Lynnell Willingham crashes the show for a spirited back-and-forth with Doc Walker about who the Commanders really are and what their true identity is. Lynnell doesn't hold back, insisting this team doesn't look like a Super Bowl contender, while Doc pushes back with his own perspective on where Washington stands.
Lynnell joins the show to break down the different schemes and tactics the Commanders should use against the Green Bay Packers, offering insight on how Washington can create advantages on both sides of the ball. He also shares his perspective on the best ways to handle Micah Parsons, emphasizing the importance of preparation and execution against one of the league's most disruptive defenders.
On today's Burgundy & Gold Today, Lynnell kicks things off by looking ahead to Thursday night as the Commanders try to win in Green Bay for the first time since 1988, then dives into what's sustainable from Washington's dominant Week 1 win over the Giants — from Jayden Daniels' legs, to the defense's energy, to the creativity in the run game — before taking calls from listeners. He also reacts to Dan Quinn's comments on the rushing attack and makes the case for seeing more of Bill Croskey-Merritt after his breakout debut with 82 yards and a touchdown. From there, Lynnell discusses Terry McLaurin's quiet game (just 2 catches for 27 yards on 4 targets), and reminds listeners that while Terry will have off games like this, he's still a top 10–15 wideout whose monster games are coming. In Hour 2, Lynnell takes more calls on whether Croskey-Merritt should get more work in Week 2 before welcoming on Grant Paulsen of the Take Command Podcast to break down the Giants win, preview Commanders-Packers, and discuss how Washington stacks up against a Green Bay team that dominated Detroit and just added Micah Parsons. Lynnell then gives his NFL Power Rankings and reveals where the Commanders stand. In the final hour, Lynnell unveils his “Nell's Super Six-Pack” — the top six NFL teams after Week 1 plus three “on the bubble” — then takes calls on who listeners think is the best team in football. He's later joined by Mike Jones of The Athletic to go around the NFL, highlight Week 1's best teams, and react to Washington's performance, before closing the show with the question: what do the Commanders still need to do to be considered among the NFL's elite?

This conversation is exactly that - two women on the spiritual path having a chat.
