Released in 2016, “The Trail Went Cold” is a weekly true crime podcast which explores unsolved mysteries and cold cases. On each episode, host Robin Warder examines a new murder or missing persons case, tackling a wide variety of mysteries from different countries and time periods. After sharing all the details about each case, Robin offers his own personal analysis and theories about what happened. At the time of this recording, “The Trail Went Cold” has released over 400 episodes and is approaching its nine-year anniversary as a podcast and some of the cold cases it has covered over the years have even wound up being solved. One of the cases Robin covered extensively was the case known as 'The Boys on the Tracks".   August 23, 1987. Saline County Arkansas. 16-year old Don Henry and 17-year old Kevin Ives head into the woods to do some late-night hunting, but never return. Hours later, the two boys are seen lying on some railroad tracks before they are run over by a cargo train and the medical examiner concludes they had fallen asleep after smoking marijuana and their deaths were accidental. However, Don and Kevin's families push for a new investigation, which uncovers evidence that they were violently attacked before their bodies were placed on the tracks. Throughout the years, a number of conspiracy theories emerge to suggest the boys were murdered as part of a cover-up involving drug trafficking, but no one is ever charged with the crime. “The Trail Went Cold” released a two-part episode about this convoluted story for their five-year anniversary show. Coconut Grove, Florida. 17-year old Amy Billig phones her father from her home and arranges to meet him at his workplace in order to borrow money to have lunch with friends. Amy is last seen hitchhiking next to a highway, but she never shows up to meet her father or her friends and is subsequently reported missing. After being informed that Amy was abducted by a gang of bikers, her mother, Susan Billig, spends the next several years attempting to track her down and even encounters a biker who claims to have bought and owned Amy for a time. The Billig family also has to endure two decades' worth of harassing phone calls from another man who claims to have kidnapped Amy, but even after the caller is identified and arrested, no trace of Amy is ever found. Was Amy Billig actually abducted and held captive by bikers? Was the tormenting caller responsible for Amy's disappearance? Or could an unknown third party have murdered her instead? Kent Heitholt, a 48-year old sports editor for the Columbia Daily Tribune, is severely beaten and strangled to death in their parking lot. Two-and-a-half years later, investigators are led towards a young suspect named Charles Erickson, who has told people he had vivid dreams of himself and his friend, Ryan Ferguson, murdering Kent after leaving a nearby bar that night. After Charles confesses to the crime, both he and Ryan are charged with Kent's murder and Charles' testimony helps convict Ryan and send him to prison for 40 years. However, after Charles and another key witness recant their testimony, Ryan's conviction is vacated and he is released from prison in 2013. Even though many feel that Charles is also innocent of the crime, he continues to remain incarcerated. If Ryan Ferguson and Charles Erickson did not murder Kent Heitholt, then who did? On this episode Robin & I dig into the disappearance of Bryce Laspisa. This is a really puzzling case from 2013 where Bryce begins to exhibit some strange and erratic behaviors, as well as drinking too much and using the prescription drug Vyvanse to stay up all night and play video games. Bryce attempts to give away some of his most meaningful possessions before mysteriously becoming stranded in Buttonwillow, California. Bryce resists driving the few hours to his parents and is confronted by the police at one point and the man who initially brought him his gasoline, at the behest of his parents. Bryce would eventually crash his car, in what was determined to be a purposeful crash that involved acceleration. A later search of the area would turn up no Bryce, his scent was lost at a truck stop, leading many to believe he hitched a ride. What happened to Bryce? Robin and I attempt to parse through the evidence and the theories. After receiving a phone call, an angry Ron Gillispie frantically drives away from his home and dies after crashing into a tree. For the past several months, Ron's wife, Mary Gillispie, had been receiving anonymous threatening letters expressing anger about her alleged affair with another man. In total, over a thousand anonymous letters would be sent to residents of the area during this time period. Five-and-a-half years later, Mary would find a homemade booby trap containing a gun belonging to Ron's former brother-in-law, Paul Freshour. Paul is accused of being the author of the anonymous letters and spends ten years in prison for Mary's attempted murder, but the threatening letters continue to be sent while Paul is incarcerated. Was Paul Freshour the mysterious “Circleville Writer” or was he framed and wrongly imprisoned? For our special two-year anniversary show of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will be chronicling a case which was voted on by our listeners: the bizarre saga of “The Circleville Letters”. Ashley Flowers is a millionaire serial plagiarist who also makes true crime podcasts, most notably Crime Junkie. Together, they came up with Red Ball, a four-part podcast on the Burger Chef murders that ran in November of 2019. It was badly-written copaganda, but the backstory behind the series is even worse.You see, Flowers handed over complete editorial control of her show to the state police. In exchange for this puffery, Dalton allowed Flowers to exclusively read and monetize investigative case files that not even the families of the victims have ever been permitted to see. Nutley, New Jersey. 36-year old Susan Walsh leaves her son in the care of her estranged husband and says she needs to step out to make some phone calls, but she never returns to her apartment and is not heard from again. At the time, Susan had been working as a freelance journalist and an exotic dancer, but was also struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. The investigation into Susan's disappearance explores a number of different angles – including Russian mobsters, underground vampire clubs, and an obsessive stalker – and even looks into the possibility that she ran away voluntarily, but there are no conclusive answers. There's nothing quite like enjoying an ice cold beer at a major league baseball game, or a minor league baseball game, or any baseball game really. But while it can be enjoyable, sports and alcohol have the potential to be a dangerous mix, and some fans can drink too much and potentially cause mayhem. Now what if your favorite team decided to hold a promotion that would sell beers for just 10 cents each at an upcoming game? What if, on top of that, your team isn't winning much of the time, causing you to be frustrated with them? That was the exact scenario for the Cleveland Indians when they decided to hold such a promotion for a game against the Texas Rangers on the night of June 4, 1974. The 10 Cent Beer promotion was intended to draw more fans to a game for a team that had been struggling with fan attendance. Initially, they were successful in that objective. However, by the end of the night, it would go down in history as one of the most memorable nights ever in all of sports, for all the wrong reasons. This cold case from 1988 details a brutal murder of a woman in Walker, LA and several other crimes committed by her murderer across the country. On February 9, 1844, Esther Foster and William Graham were jointly executed by hanging, in Columbus, Ohio, on the same scaffold. It was the last public execution held in the state.
