This reprise of a story from “Trouble” is not exactly a Hanukkah story, but it is Hanukkah-”adjacent” (to borrow a wonderful phrase from Nick Sipe in his story in “Foolhardy”). It is a story about family and memories and candles, essential elements of that cultural celebration and observance. It is a story about empathy, something we can all use more of and offer more often when we can. —Happy Holidays from “6-minute Stories” podcast and the Personal Story Publishing Project.“Thirteen Candles in the Dark”—the “mother-in-law from hell” The trouble between them was as old and deep as the love which might yet heal them. Arlene Mandell is an artist living in Linville, North Carolina. Her colorful portraits are displayed year-round at the Carlton Gallery in Banner Elk (www.carltongallery.com/arlenemandell). A native New Yorker, she loved teaching in Manhattan's Head Start program. Switching gears, she joined a travel magazine in Miami, Florida, where she met Captain Dan. Their permanent relocation to the Blue Ridge Mountains inspired a love of writing. Her memoirs “Eye of the Dolphin,” “Artist Borne,” “Gobsmacked in the Gulfstream,” “Renegade Daughter,” and “It Started with a Typo” appear on “6-minute Stories” podcast.

Michael Blowen loves “being old.” Those are his words, not mine!  After years as a film critic for the Boston Globe, he snapped. In the middle of an awful movie, he stood up and yelled at the other critics: “How can you endure this?”  Today, he's so much happier. As the founder of Old Friends, a Thoroughbred aftercare facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, he's helped turn a modest mom-and-pop operation into a sprawling 236-acre farm with three satellite locations and a herd of over 255 retired former racehorses and breeding stallions.  Retirement, if you can call it that, really suits Michael. He believes age is a free pass to say yes to the fun and no to the dreaded obligations. He's formed friendships with celebrities like Albert Brooks and Angie Dickson. Every morning, he wakes up with a heart full of gratitude, ready to feed former Kentucky Derby winners. The thrill of it still gives him the chills. This whole thing started because Michael, as a fan of horse racing, wanted to improve his gambling skills. But whoops! He fell in love with horses and has dedicated his life to improving their lives. Listen to Michael. It might improve your life.  00:00-Start 03:06-It Started with Six 07:45-Old Friends 14:54-Mo Rocca & the “Rocca Generians” 18:11-Recovering Movie Critic 23:18-You Can't Go Back Up the Stretch 27:10-Retirement's an Odd Word 29:05-About the Horses 34:47-A Page Out of Their Book 40:11-There's a Horse in Your Living Room 43:37-Adversity is an Asset 46:11-Let's Take a Shot at This Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome back, Pathfinders! Today, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Kevin and Taylor Mathers from Mathers on the Map. Their story is nothing short of inspiring – a tale of wanderlust turned lifestyle. Once they dipped their toes into the world of travel, they were hooked, and they took actionable steps to turn full-time travel into their reality. While their journey takes many forms, van life remains their favorite mode of exploration. For Kevin and Taylor, it's not just about the destination; it's about the journey, and nothing encapsulates this better than life on the road. From a Long-Distance Relationship to Travel Hacking Their journey began with a long-distance relationship that prompted them to seek out ways to save money on travel. Enter travel hacking – a game-changer that allowed them to snag $20,000 plane tickets for a mere $100, thanks to credit card bonuses and strategic spending. This savvy approach to travel has saved them over $100,000 over the years, making globe-trotting more accessible than ever. Escaping the Rat Race: From Corporate Careers to Mathers On The Map The conventional nine-to-five grind wasn't cutting it for Kevin. While on the path to becoming a corporate IT VP, a glimpse into the world of Instagram opened his eyes to a new realm of possibilities. Inspired by those making a living through social media, Kevin dove headfirst into entrepreneurship, trading endless hours at the office for a more flexible and fulfilling lifestyle. Today, they've transitioned from side hustles to full-time YouTubers, proving that with dedication and ingenuity, anyone can craft their dream career. Benefits Beyond the Rat Race Leaving behind the security of a traditional job can be daunting, especially when faced with the allure of benefits and pensions. However, Kevin and Taylor stress the importance of evaluating these perks critically. Not all benefits are created equal, and understanding what you truly need versus what you're sacrificing is essential before taking the leap into full-time entrepreneurship. It Started With a Road Trip From Coast to Coast Before they were Mathers on the Map, a seven-day road trip across the US for a work relocation marked the beginning of their adventure. From the Grand Canyon to Elvis's House, each stop fueled their passion for exploration. This journey kickstarted their travel goals, ultimately inspiring them to aim for 30 countries before turning 30. Nursing Per Diem: Balancing Work and Wanderlust Taylor's career as a travel nurse provided the perfect balance between work and travel. With flexible contracts and ample time off, she was able to explore various destinations while still pursuing her passion for nursing. Transitioning to per diem nursing allowed even more freedom, aligning perfectly with their nomadic lifestyle. House Hacking: Building Wealth Through Real Estate Their duplex was a game-changer, allowing them to offset their mortgage while building wealth through real estate. Inspired by the concept of house hacking, they transformed their living situation into a profitable investment. By leveraging Airbnb and long-term rentals, they've created a sustainable source of income that allows them to travel. The 30 Under 30 Challenge: Chasing Adventures Around the Globe From Costa Rica to Bali, Mathers on the Map embarked on a mission to explore 30 countries before hitting the big 3-0. Breaking free from the conventional vacation mold, they embraced backpacking and gap years, opening themselves up to a world of adventure and cultural immersion. Van Builds: Crafting the Perfect Home on Wheels Two van builds later and they've perfected their mobile abode. From climate control for their baby to a custom crib, each upgrade reflects their evolving needs and priorities. By prioritizing functionality over luxury, they've created a cozy haven on wheels that accommodates their growing family. Current Challenges and Memorable Moments Balancing home life with their nomadic lifestyle poses its challenges, but the memories they've created along the way make it all worthwhile. From impromptu house tours in the Philippines to slowing down to savor moments with their son, Wyatt, every experience enriches their journey and strengthens their bond as a family. In the end, Mathers on the Map isn't just about the places they've been; it's about the people they've met, the lessons they've learned, and the memories they've made along the way. As they continue to chart their course through life, one thing remains certain – the adventure never ends for this inspiring duo. Christmas at Rainbow Falls has been published! In the back of the book is a bonus scene for Take Two, which has a connection to Christmas at Rainbow Falls. TB wants more rainbows and is tired of all the hate in the world. The IHS Mega Sale is going on now through November 29. And, finally, it's the home stretch of NaNo. Write TB. Write! The Christmas Catch launch has settled down, but the narrator fell through. In good Clare audio news, It Started with a Kiss will be out soon! The football book is going on forever, so it needs some work. Clare had a fab time in Portugal, and she played beer pong for the first time. Now that she's rested, it's time to tear into the footy book. TB has a novel solution to the footy book issue that Clare doesn't seem to truly appreciate. They move on to the topic: what to-dos are on your author business list? They share the tasks that must get done, including ones they've been putting off because they don't wanna do them. Recording the episode causes them to freak out and it's depressing how much always needs to get done. Let us know what you think? TB and Miranda got Christmas at Rainbow Falls to the editor on time, but it was a close call. TB is joining the daily Zoom NaNo sprints every day, and she's getting words on the page. The weather has been on the warm side in November, allowing TB and Miranda to meet up in Concord for their tradition when they start a new project. On a particularly warm day (record-breaker), TB was battling a fever from her Covid and flu jabs. Clare also got her Covid jab, but she didn't get sick. Sadly, things keep going wrong with The Christmas Catch launch. In good writing news, Clare is getting back into the writing swing with the footie book and an author buddy helped her out with some of the plot issues, although TB has the perfect solution. Audio fans: It Started with a Kiss will be available soon! Clare's in Portugal for a week. Exciting times! They crash on to embarrassing stories from their lives that they've put into books. TB recommended this topic because she thinks people could use more laughter and both of them have plenty of silly moments they aren't afraid to share. Let us know what you think? I loved this conversation with David Stanley because he breaks love down to the very simple idea of being good and decent. When you look at love in those simple forms you can apply it to business, friendships, life, science, and everything else. This is what David does and that makes for a great conversation. Bio David L. Stanley, B.Sc, M.A., is a teacher, poet and author, voice-over actor, and speaker. His work has appeared in national magazines on topics from professional bicycle racing to men, depression, and suicide. His first book, Melanoma, It Started with a Freckle was hailed by Prof. Tom Foster of How to Read Novels Like a Professor as “harrowing, insightful, technical, and hilarious.” Stanley's second book, co-authored with Willie Artis is From Jim Crow to CEO, the Willie Artis Story, available via AUX Media. His latest book is Rants & Mutters, an essay collection. In addition, you can read his poetry on his Medium page. Much of his prose is found on his personal blog, Rants & Mutters, and his Vocal.Media page. David Stanley has read his sonnets to audiences at the Dad 2.0 Summit; North America's largest gathering of dads and brands. His poetry has been featured in blogs and literary magazines. He is the narrator of 40 audiobooks on subjects ranging from Alzheimer's, bicycle racing, the NBA, to mountaineering.  Stanley travels to speak on melanoma awareness, fatherhood and life, and The Art of the Pitch. On the writing front, TB and Miranda have started a new writing project and TB is super excited about tapping out fresh words. In freaky news, TB is stumbling upon more snakes while hiking. Clare has been trying to launch It Started with a Kiss but Amazon is complicating the process. She's also battling Audible to get the correct categories for Change of Heart. It's not all bad news. Real estate is an unpredictable business. But Kaajal Shahani knows that when the market throws our business for a loop, sometimes the best thing we can do is learn to “just roll with it!” What you will learn in this episode: How Kaajal Shahani has mastered the art of creating consistency — even in an unpredictable industry like Real Estate Why she used to say she'd “never get into real estate,” and what changed her mind How Kaajal got a job as a buyer's agent even though she initially had no idea how to be one What happened when Kaajal left her first job in the industry to move back to her hometown in the Bay Area Why having an entire family of real estate professionals is helpful…and also not so helpful How Kaajal reacted when some of the most successful moments in her career were immediately followed by major market crashes Why Kaajal used to balk at the idea of having a daily routine — and why she swears by it now How “joking” about going on a sabbatical resulted in Kaajal taking a MONTH-LONG vacation with her entire family on her 40th birthday Kaajal's advice for anyone looking to create balance in their business and their life Just Roll with It! It's probably safe to assume that no one enters the real estate business because of the consistency it offers. You can have one of the greatest months of your career, only to have it immediately followed by one of the toughest. Kaajal Shahani, our guest on this episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, knows this all-too-well. After navigating the ups and downs the market has thrown her way throughout her career, she's learned that sometimes, creating consistency means embracing unpredictability with an attitude of, “just roll with it!” It Started with a “What's Next?” Since she grew up in a real estate family, Kaajal decided to pursue a career in a totally different world: corporate America. But, when the 9-to-5 life started to feel stifling, she found herself asking “what's next?” And that's where her story truly got started. While it was always an option she kept in the back of her mind, Kaajal's transition into the real estate industry happened much faster than she ever would have expected. Once she had her license, she left her 9-to-5 job, walked into a local realtor's office on a whim, and struck up a conversation with a broker. That conversation lead to another one with a different broker who was looking for a buyer's agent. And, even though she didn't know anything about being a buyers agent when she first started, Kaajal not only loved the work, but she also ended up closing 36 sales in her first year alone. Suffice to say, she'd found her fit. Navigating the Ups and Downs Kaajal had an incredible team behind her, a mentor to guide her, and with such a successful chapter under her belt, she decided to move back to the Bay Area to start her own business. Everything was falling into place. And then the market crashed… Getting a business off of the ground is never a walk in the park, but for Kaajal, it meant spending a year and a half door-knocking, cold-calling, and doing open houses every single weekend — many of which ended up being no-shows — before she made her first sale. Finally, right around the time she was starting to wonder what more she could possibly be doing, Kaajal started closing deals. Her determination and tireless efforts were paying off. She'd built up her local network, gained recognition in her area, and was set to keep building off of that momentum she'd been storing up. And then the market crashed…again. Creating Balance Knowing how and when we need to adapt in order to evolve is something Kaajal refers to as the “mastery of the business.” Even though the market continues to ebb and flow just like always, Kaajal's volume has still gone up year over year. She's adamant that the consistent growth would not be possible if it weren't for her routine and the “just roll with it” approach she's learned to take in the face of unpredictability. Kaajal encourages anyone who is navigating uncertainty, whether it's with their business or their personal life, to lean into it. Creating balance often means being willing to embrace change and adapt to challenges without allowing them to limit our success. In honor of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, The team at the Firefighters Podcast wanted to pay tribute to the victims and honor the survivors with a special dedicated episode. My guest today is retired FDNY firefighter Gerald “Jerry” Sanford has published his new book “It Started with a Helmet: A Retired Firefighter's Return to New York City the Day Before 9/11,” which shares his gripping true account while volunteering with the FDNY during the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The book reflects on Sanford's 29-year career with the FDNY after which he retired and moved to Naples, Fla.However, the retirement was short-lived, and he began working for the North Naples Fire Control and Rescue District where he came across an early 1900s antique leather fire helmet that originated from a firehouse in the Bronx. Sanford coordinated a presentation ceremony, scheduled for Sept. 10, 2001, to return the historic keepsake to Ladder 42.  Unfortunately, many of the people who attended tragically died the next day including Father Judge and the chief of the department, Pete Ganci. With the city in ruins and the fire department in disarray after losing 343 brave men, Sanford volunteered to serve the FDNY in one of his former roles as press secretary and got to work on the grim tasks of planning and attending funerals for his friends and brothers while also trying to organize the chaos. Sanford's book also shares his experience battling lung cancer – an aftereffect many surviving 9/11 first responders have battled– as well as his continuing work to honor those who died by helping to establish the Freedom Memorial in Naples, Fla.It is a pleasure to be able to share Jerry's story and we hope you are able to reflect, pay tribute in your own way and continue to support our front-line workers who train every day to deal with these disasters. To learn more about the podcast or become a partner of the podcast Jump over to our website by clicking HEREFollow the podcast onYoutubeFacebookInstagramA big thanks to the support of our partners for being part of the FFP familyWilliam Wood WatchesHAIX FootwearGet notified of each Podcast episode as soon as they come out by clicking HEREIf you have taken value from any of our episodes and would like to support the future growth of The Firefighters Podcast then you can do so by clicking HERE

A black leather helmet. Not just any helmet. A circa 1914 FDNY helmet found in Naples, Florida, originating from Ladder 42 in The Bronx, New York. In this week's episode, Jerry Stanford, FDNY veteran, details his adventure in returning that incredible helmet – and presenting it back to Ladder 42 in The Bronx on September 10, 2001 - the day before the attacks of 9/11. Jerry returned to service as a volunteer after the attacks on the World Trade center and authored the book: It Started with a Helmet. You'll appreciate Jerry's compelling story, and his straightforward personality as he details the path of the helmet from Naples to The Bronx. In this episode you will hear: • We flew out from La Guardia Airport 2 hours before the attacks. I could've been on one of those hijacked planes. • Everyone's running out of the buildings while we were running into the building. • We lost 343 Firefighters from all ranks. With all those years of experience gone, it was difficult to fill those voids. • After 10-12 days, it changed from a rescue mission to a recovery mission. • The jet fuel kept the fires burning. • On September 12, 2001, we were all New Yorkers. • You couldn't buy a flag. • The government officials told us that it was fine to be in the area with no masks or breathing gear. 6 years later, I was diagnosed with lung cancer, as were many others. • Back then, I could go to the World Trade Center site, and any hour of the day or night. People were cheering us on. • Now they want to cut back funding for police, while they have private security. That's crazy. • Life is so different now. We have to adapt to it. • We were taken aback at the difference in two or three years in New York City. • In Afghanistan, the Taliban has taken over in three short weeks. What the hell is going on there? • We let the fox back into the hen house. • What happened to our leadership? • If you need to talk to somebody, please do it. Don't do anything drastic. A lot of departments have mental health people that are there to help you. • It doesn't cost anything to be nice to people.
