In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Mal McHugh, a legend in sports science, to dive deep into the world of metrics and performance. We're talking about the good, the bad, and the ugly of measuring athletes – from force plates to jump profiles. Dr. McHugh breaks down why not all metrics are created equal, and how teams can actually use data to prevent injuries and understand player performance. We'll explore everything from how young hockey players should tie their skates to the complex world of tracking an athlete's physical decline. Trust me, you'll walk away with a whole new perspective on sports science and how data can (and can't) tell the full story of an athlete's potential. HIGHLIGHTS 00:00 Skate lacing for young players. 02:00 Meet Dr. Mal McHugh, sports medicine researcher and Director of Research at NISMAT. 04:30 Problems with the current hyper-focus on metrics without proper context. 06:00 What is the importance of defining problems and validation? 14:45 How to simplify complex systems (and stop measuring “trees” without understanding the “forest”). 29:15 Counter movement jumps and force plate analysis. 41:45 The importance of impulse and rate of force development in assessing athletes' performance. 48:00 Addressing specific injuries and preventing recurrent injuries. 01:03:00 How to use metrics to assess athletes' physical attributes, effort, stress, and recovery. Nora 'Nono' McHugh from Galway is a true pioneer in Irish sport. She made history in 1973 as the first-ever captain of the Irish Women's National Football Team, leading her squad to a memorable victory against Wales. But her love of sport began long before that, from kicking a ball on the streets of the Claddagh to playing every game imaginable in the Swamp, her journey is one of passion, grit, and unwavering determination. Nono's sporting success spans far beyond football, with remarkable achievements across many sports including Gaelic football, camogie, badminton and more. Her dedication and contribution to Irish sport has been recognised nationally and locally with her induction into the FAI Hall of Fame last year, and more recently, she received the prestigious Galway Sports Stars Hall of Fame Award. Nono takes us on a heartfelt journey through her life, sharing vivid stories from her early days growing up in the Claddagh, her adventures in sport both at home and abroad, and the challenges of balancing athletic ambition with personal responsibilities. She reflects on the power of sport to shape identity and build community, offering her signature wit and wisdom along the way. Now in her 70s, Nono remains as active as ever, swimming daily at Blackrock in Salthill, going to the gym, and staying deeply connected to her local sporting communities. She's a firm believer that staying active and finding a supportive and encouraging community is key, especially as we age. Despite her incredible athletic accomplishments, Nono's humility shines through, for her, the greatest reward is the pride and recognition of her family. This episode is more than a celebration of Nono's life in sport, it's a powerful reminder that passion, perseverance, and a sense of community matter at every stage of life. No matter your age or ability, there's always a place for sport in your story.

IN THIS EPISODE: [4:44] Andra's story of how her children suffered from eczema[7:58] The difference between skin irritation and eczema and getting to the root cause[11:21] A discussion on skin care to manage the discomfort of symptoms and addressing the root cause along with the support of community[18:10] Step one is commitment, no matter what, for 90 days[20:28] Andra suggests spices and other food choices and food groups and eating for ultimate digestion[25:32] Eating seasonal foods foods and crops[27:38] Tips for making your home non-toxic [34:08] Treating eczema holistically one step at a timeKEY TAKEAWAYS: Severe eczema in children can be challenging to manage with conventional treatments, such as steroid prescriptions. A holistic approach focuses on healing from the root cause rather than simply managing symptoms. This includes addressing underlying issues such as gut health, diet, and environmental factors while making small, consistent changes for long-term healing.Food combinations and digestion-focused diets are essential for gut health, eczema, and other skin conditions. For example, grains can be soaked in lemon water and cooked in an Instapot to reduce lectins and promote digestion. Focusing on digestion can help with conditions like eczema, as the digestive system plays a key role in nutrient absorption and symptom management.Creating a non-toxic home environment is vital for holistic eczema healing. This includes using natural cleaners (e.g., tea tree oil and vinegar), reducing EMF exposure, and addressing potential mold and water quality issues. Switching from plastic to glass or stainless steel in the kitchen, eliminating toxic chemicals from household items, and focusing on non-toxic materials for clothing can significantly improve eczema symptoms.QUOTES: [8:53] “Eczema is an autoimmune, right? It's an inflammatory condition, essentially. It stems from the gut. As we often say, our skin is our intestines turned inside out, right?” - Jenn Trepeck [10:10] “Everything that's touching your skin needs to be digestible because your skin is your largest organ.” - Andra McHugh[13:33] “If you're not sleeping through the night, everything becomes infinitely harder” - Jenn Trepeck[15:46] “There's that ownership and autonomy that I think can be empowering versus overwhelming.” - Jenn Trepeck[24:53] ”We want to be particular about the ingredients in the foods that we're buying, even though they're saying it's gluten-free or grain-free.” - Jenn Trepeck[27:54] “Unfortunately, this is how our homes are built, including all the smart appliances. alarm systems and everything is hooked up to Wi-Fi. It's such an inflammatory environment.” - Andra McHugh.[33:19] “ I love your language: putting it in escrow. It all adds up, and it's worth it. Joining me for this week's episode is Lisa McHugh, an award-winning singer-songwriter and one of the brightest stars in Irish country music. Beyond her music, she's also an entrepreneur, a proud mam of two, and a voice of positivity and empowerment for women. Her two children, Milo who is two and Hallie who is just five months, are the centre of her world, but her parenting path has thrown up some real challenges for Lisa. After Hallie was born, Lisa spent ten days in hospital with her brand new daughter in the NICU, where she couldn't see Milo and couldn't cuddle her newborn as she was hooked up to a CPAP machine. Hallie's health had another challenge just recently too, and another stint in hospital was required. But through it all, Lisa remains positive, while also being honest about how hard is has been for her and her family. With her own parents in Glasgow, where Lisa was born, she says that having a break or some downtime isn't something she can remember having in recent memory. All of this, and a full-on career as a musician means that Lisa is my new inspiration! I hope you enjoy listening this week, and I'll be back with more next week. Hosted on Acast. Twenty-two of Ireland's top entrepreneurs and innovators presented new research breakthroughs to leading figures in business and industry at a special showcase at University of Galway. The 22 high potential start-ups were selected for their IP-backed, deep-tech solutions that aim to solve global challenges and hold the prospect of being the next big-ticket homegrown enterprise. The research-led innovations are in the areas of medical technologies, pharmaceuticals, biotech, AI, photonics and biosensors. Invention pitches included a new therapy option for retinal diseases; a probiotic solution aimed at helping eczema sufferers; the first non-invasive medical device to treat severe menopause symptoms; and an AI algorithm that proactively identifies signs of diminished mental wellbeing at an early stage. Twelve of the high potential start-ups have been developed at University of Galway, with additional projects from UCD, UCC, Tyndall National Institute and ATU. The day-long showcase was the third in a series of Business Partner events organised by the Innovation Office at University of Galway. The initiative facilitates intensive networking between researchers, start-up entrepreneurs, business leaders, mentors and industry experts. Founders and innovators sought access to business leaders in the areas of R&D capability, manufacturing, marketing, clinical and investment supports, to help transform their inventions into market-ready innovations. Professor Peter McHugh, Interim President, University of Galway, said, "Celebrating research excellence and innovation at University of Galway, this event showcased new opportunities for industry collaborations between our entrepreneurial researchers and the business community." "It is heartening to see the central role played by Irish universities that are to the forefront in fostering innovation and developing solutions that can have a meaningful impact in the market. By bridging academic research with practical applications, these initiatives are not only advancing technology but also addressing real-world challenges in society," continued McHugh. "This collaborative approach not only supports the growth of these start-ups but also contributes to the broader narrative of innovation and entrepreneurship in the region. It is a great example of how dedicated support can lead to remarkable stories of success and impact." Investors, business partners, mentors and business advisors had the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge research innovations and to meet with those driving the future of business and technology in Ireland. Jacinta Thornton, Associate Director, Innovation Office, University of Galway, said, "The Innovation Office plays a pivotal role in this process, working closely with researchers at every step of their journey. By accelerating research impact and empowering emerging technologies and spinouts, the University is helping to cultivate the next generation of high-potential start-ups. This commitment not only enhances the entrepreneurial landscape but also contributes significantly to the region's economic growth and technological advancement." The research projects which have spawned business innovation were supported through funding programmes from Enterprise Ireland, Taighde Éireann-Research Ireland and the EU.

We have a wonderful conversation with Lori McHugh to share with you! Lori begins her story by sharing about where the foundation of her faith came from. Her parents were both strong believers and she shares many stories about how her Mom in particular modeled faith and trust in God as she grew up in Pittsburgh. Lori caught onto this faith as a child and shares a heartwarming story about how even as a young girl she wanted to trust God with her whole heart. When Lori was out of college, she ended up moving to Florida to work for NASCAR and one of her neighbors ended up becoming her husband, Mike. This brought a new level of needing to trust God as Mike was in the military and would be deployed multiple times and they would move all over the U.S. We appreciate how Lori brings us into the military life and describes the new level of trust she reached with the Lord. The foundation was continuing to be strengthened. When Lori and Mike had kids another level of trust was reached, especially as her husband was passing along his passion for extreme sports to his sons. Lori talks about her journey as a mom and what it looks like to always trust that God is watching over her kids. She talks through multiple accidents that both her husband and kids have been in and how she does her best to overcome worry on a daily basis. Even aside from the many crazy things they have experienced as a family Lori encourages all Christ followers to really lean in and trust. The concept of trusting God can be a very difficult thing for even a seasoned Christ follower to practice. Lori's testimony will inspire and challenge you as she takes us through these different levels of truth in the Lord! Want to share your story on The Stories Collective podcast? When you're not mindful, you can't fully accept what's happening. Without acceptance, you're resisting the situation. Resisting an emotion only amplifies it by giving it more attention, which in turn strengthens the emotion. Acceptance, however, helps you navigate through it instead of fueling it further. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is incredibly powerful. I view it as a way to absorb energy from the universe. Deep breathing is especially helpful, and whenever I feel overwhelmed, I focus on my breath. This practice, like the Wim Hof method, helps me regain calm and composure, especially when I need to refocus. They may have challenging family circumstances, or maybe something traumatic happened, like losing a parent. You just never know what someone is going through. Approaching it with empathy might melt the ice around the bully's heart, and sometimes, it can even lead to unexpected friendship. Of course, that's much easier said than done.
