We loved talking with Samantha about psychology and some of the research that went into serial killers. Would the murderers of the 1970s and 1980s being able to outsmart technology? USA Today bestselling author and Edgar Award nominee, Samantha Downing returns with her fifth novel, Too Old For This, featuring a seventy-five year old, retired serial killer Lottie Jones, who changed her name and is living a quiet normal life until she's forced out of retirement. Time has taken a toll on Lottie and she's not as nimble and efficient as she once was--and police have new technology that she didn't have to contend with when she first started out. A thriller laced with sharp, dark humor makes Too Old For This one of my favorite books of the year. Samantha is a master storyteller and this one may be her best yet, landing it on several Most Anticipated Book lists for the year. Listen to Samantha talk about the origins of Lottie's character, why readers are gravitating to the story, and what was the most difficult part of writing this book. Don't miss this one!

Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

#PodcastersForJustice Emmy-nominated screenwriter and author, Sascha Rothchild, spoke to me about her humble beginnings in LA, working with Marc Maron on GLOW, and how to write a "bingeable" thriller like her debut, "Blood Sugar." Sascha has written and produced lauded TV shows including GLOW (2017), The Bold Type (2017), and The Carrie Diaries (2013), and was named Variety's “10 TV Writers to Watch” 2015. Her long-form journalism, "How to Get Divorced by 30," was adapted into both an acclaimed memoir and screenplay for Universal Studios. Her debut novel is Blood Sugar, a psychological, noir thriller, named one of the most anticipated reads of 2022 by PopSugar, BookPage, and Crimereads. It's described as "...the story of the most likable murderess you will ever meet," and bestselling author Samantha Downing called it “...a fascinating story, wicked sharp writing, and an unforgettable narrator .... [that] needs to be on your 2022 reading list.” In this file Sascha Rothchild and I discussed: The feeling of powerlessness that comes with publishing your debut Why she needs to wake up and write something every day How to write a novel in the gaps What writers need to know about the frustration of the craft Taking Jane Austen to high tea And a lot more! On this episode, I talk to Jaime Lynn Hendricks about her debut thriller Finding Tessa.Check her out on Instagram Finding Tessa SummaryJace and Tessa appear to be a young couple in love with nothing to hide. But looks can be deceiving. When Jace Montgomery comes home late from entertaining clients, he discovers that his wife Tessa is missing. There's broken glass at the back door. Clumps of her hair. Blood. The cops in their small New Jersey town have him pegged as a suspect, especially after he explodes at a reporter during a press conference. Jace maintains his innocence despite the mounting evidence against him, but when a coworker he's accused of having an affair with also disappears and a search warrant turns up an illegal gun in Jace's home, all signs point to him as the culprit. What is he really hiding?Meanwhile, Tessa finally feels safe, having set up her husband to take the fall for her disappearance—and someone close to him is helping her put him away. Breaking her lifelong pattern of bad men is only one hurdle she has to overcome. The other is outrunning her secret past while trying to stay alive, especially when those in her new life aren't who they appear to be.Jace's lies don't add up and the authorities are closing in. Will Tessa's old life catch up to her and drag her back to a life of abuse before justice is served? Finding Tessa is a smart domestic thriller where nothing can be taken at face value, where every twist reveals a deadlier secret than the one before. Thriller writer Sharon Doering may have grown up in a nice suburban neighborhood just outside Chicago, with normal parents, who worked normal jobs, while living a normal life. And even though Sharon is a wife, mother of three children, and does most all the normal things an American housewife does, she has been getting away with murder. Writing about murder, of course. Join Sharon and me for some hilarious moments, as we discuss her nearly perverse love of dark humor, pages of hot 'n steamy sex (in the book), and a fistful of dark, twisted, and broken characters with whom she hangs out. With a Master's degree in biotechnology, this former science professor and stock analyst, has turned her craft of writing stock reports to crafting psychological thrillers. If you need any more persuasion as to her talents, check these few testimonial endorsements: “Somewhere between OZARK and SHARP OBJECTS, there is Sharon Doering's CONFESS TO ME." – Samantha Downing, Sunday Times bestselling author of My Lovely Wife and He Started It“Brilliant, vicious and wildly compulsive, CONFESS TO ME is a masterpiece of a thriller.” – PJ Vernon, author of Bath HausSharon Doering arrives on the mystery scene with an explosive, darkly comedic thriller that belongs on every to read list." — Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of The Other Mrs.Learn more about Sharon at SharonDoering.com and feel free to follow her on Twitter @SharonJDoering.
