Hello and welcome to the Talkhouse Podcast, I'm Josh Modell. On this week's episode we've got a pair of friends who, as you'll hear, have provided emotional support and advice to each other throughout interesting, winding careers over the past couple of decades; Mary Timony and Joe Wong. Timony is probably best known as the leader of the ‘90s indie-rock band Helium, but her catalog goes far beyond it. Prior to Helium, Timony came up in the DC punk scene as part of the band Autoclave, and after she's been part of Wild Flag with members of Sleater-Kinney, fronted a band called Ex Hex, and released records under her own name. That's mostly why we're here today, because Timony is about to release her first solo record in 15 years, and it's fantastic. It's called Untame the Tiger, and it picks up on some of the psych elements that Timony has wrangled in the past—and even includes a guest appearance by the former drummer of Fairport Convention, Dave Mattacks, as you'll hear in this chat. Untame the Tiger was also produced in part by today's other guest, Joe Wong. It comes out February 23, but check out the song “Dominoes” right here. As I mentioned, today's other guest is Joe Wong, who grew up in Milwaukee and played in indie-rock bands before finding his creative path in two amazing ways: as a composer for TV and film and as a podcast host. He's written music for the likes of Russian Doll and Master of None, and he helms the popular podcast The Trap Set, which originated as a way to spotlight his favorite drummers, but has since expanded into deep and incredible conversations with all kinds of creative folks. But a few years back, partly at the urging of his friend Mary Timony, Wong began writing songs for himself rather than for other people's scores. He just released his second album, Mere Survival, and while it still has late-'60s big-pop vibes, it gets even bigger and weirder than his first. It features not only Timony, but also Pearl Jam's Matt Cameron, among other guests. Check out the title track from Mere Survival right here. This conversation took place shortly after two big release shows for Mere Survival for which Wong gathered a 20-piece band, so you'll hear a bit about that, as well as some thoughts on songwriting itself. Wong and Timony also get deep on how their parents' illnesses brought them together, about self-sabotage and perfectionism, and much more. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Mary TImony and Joe Wong for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great written pieces at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Untame the Tiger (Merge Records) is Mary Timony's first solo album in 15 years, and it's so good, from start to finish. For the uninitiated: Timony's bands have included Helium, Autoclave, Wild Flag, and Ex-Hex.  All fantastic. Last year Rolling Stone named her #95 on the top 200 greatest guitarists of all time.  To get to this stage of excellence, Timony's process involves writing garbage.  "The only thing that works for me is writing a lot of bad stuff I really don't like," she says. Timony writes in the morning then sets it aside. "The most important part of my process is that I have to forget everything I just did, then go about my day. If the song comes back to me, maybe three hours later, then I can judge it. That new person that I am who hasn't written the song has to judge it.  And 99 percent of the time, I don't like it." All the garbage just gave us one hell of an album. *Here's my recent interview with Carrie Brownstein

Mary Timony is a singer, songwriter, and guitar wizard from Washington DC. For the past 30 years she has fronted, founded, toured, and recorded with such celebrated and influential bands as Autoclave, Helium, Ex Hex and Wild Flag. Her fifth solo release, Untame The Tiger (out February 23 via Merge) is a beautifully elaborate guitar pop, riff driven record that touches on familial loss, emotional freedom and psychic shift.   In this episode Mary tells us how an onslaught of simultaneous dramatic experiences changed her perspective personally and artistically and how music brought her closer to her ailing father. She shares her experience of recording with the great Dave Mattacks, mixing with Dave Fridmann and gives some in-sight into the process of co-producing with longtime friend, Joe Wong.   We also hear about her first punk show, how she avoids “rote playing” and shares the funny and harsh experience that led her to quitting the viola.  We hear a few tunes and Mary tells us not one, but three hilarious tour stories. And in turn, that means getting into challenging, rewarding conversations. But we are not experts in any field — literature, race relations, politics, etc .— and we know that our reviews of these books come from a place of privilege. We encourage our community of readers to add to these conversations with their own thoughts, critiques, and questions. We want to open up a safe place for people. That being said, we also realize that getting into race, sexuality, gender, and other difficult topics can be triggering. We aim to include content warnings whenever they are applicable but we are not perfect. So as we continue to do our best, know you have the room to tell us when we can do better and even, if you want to, share resources with us. Let's learn, grow, and have fun together.

Often side-project bands don't live up to the hype of the artist or band's main gig. But for Stephin Merritt, this isn't the case with several of his non-Magnetic Fields bands. With The 6ths, he's taken on the challenge of writing the songs but handing them over to guest vocalists. On the 1995 debut Wasps' Nests, that means a wide array of contributors, including Lou Barlow from Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr., Mary Timony of Helium and Ex Hex, Dean Wareham of Galaxie 500 and Luna, Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo, Mac McCaughan of Superchunk, Mitch Easter of Let's Active, and more. The musical landscape shifts from song to song, one minute aping the motortik of Stereolab and next the harmony sunshine of Laurel Canyon in the 1970s. But it's all in Stephin Merritt's wheelhouse, utilizing an array of synth and keyboard sounds over minimalist rhythms that reveal layers upon repeated listens.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - Aging Spinsters 15:56 - All Dressed Up in Dreams 20:23 - San Diego Zoo 35:02 - Here in My Heart Outro - Falling Out of Love (With You)   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Summary: Let's get witchy with it, friends! This week, Holly and Devin live out their dreams of discovering late-in-life magical prowess by discussing books centered around witches. Devin found her love of the sorceress lifestyle very early in life, whereas Holly was enchanted later. They agree that whether you're discussing the Salem witch trials or the Wicked Witch of the West, these stories embody what has culturally been feared about women, and explore what happens if women have power.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (5:33): Holly discussed The Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke, a novel centering around Liv, an artist with three young daughters, the trip to paint a mural in a remote lighthouse in Scotland, and how it all goes very horribly wrong. Her key takeaways were: Cooke, author of the acclaimed novel The Nesting, delves into the secrets of witches that have reached across centuries in this chilling Gothic thriller.  While hinging on the disappearance of Liv, Saffy, and Clover who left middle-daughter Luna to fend for herself and search for her family for 23 years, this book also features a grimoire that explores life on the island centuries before. When Luna's younger sister Clover reappears decades later but still ages just seven years, she realizes she must return to the lighthouse and confront the past if she ever hopes to unravel the creepy mystery.  The Heart (19:50): Devin discussed The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling, a delightful romp through the town of Graves Glen, Georgia, and Vivi Jones after she gets over her teenage heartbreak with vodka, candles, and a less-than-sober hex on her ex, Rhys Penhallow. Her key takeaways were: This book was essentially Sabrina the Teenage Witch combined with Stars Hollow (Gilmore Girls) plus some extra sexy steam; Vivi is the witch we'd all love to be and Devin tried to Zillow homes in Graves Glen before remembering the town is fictitious.  Our hero, Rhys, is not only unreasonably attractive and magical, but has a Welsh accent that makes you want to melt even if you're not listening to this book on audio. His chemistry with Vivi, combined with the very real challenge of his family history and the potential disaster it implies for the town, keeps you guessing and intrigued the whole time. With ley lines, hexes, a witch college, possessed toys and a talking cat, this book is the perfect, lighthearted witchy romance for spooky season; grab a mug of mulled wine, light a candle, and dive in.  Hot On the Shelf (41:30): Devin: Lease on Love by Fallon Ballard  Holly: Amari and the Great Game by B B Alston  What's Making Our Hearts Race (45:19): Devin: Ghosts on CBS Holly: The Patient on on Hulu Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Slang - Chipped Tooth

Song of the Day

Slang - Chipped Tooth from the 2022 album Cockroach In A Ghost Town on Kill Rock Stars. In one of the most ultimate Northwest powergroup collaborations to come in recent history, Slang seemingly appeared out of nowhere. In fact, Drew Grow and Janet Weiss (the latter needing no introduction and Grow being a IYKYK frontman of Modern Kin and the Pastors' Wives and in-demand producer) have been slowly working on Slang for over a decade. Bringing with them a bevy of notable names for their first record Cockroach In a Ghost Town, including Kathy Foster (Roseblood, The Thermals) on bass and Anita Lee Elliot (Viva Voce) as well as appearances from Sam Coomes (Quasi), Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), and Mary Timony (Helium, Ex Hex, Wild Flag), it's a who's who of the Northwest Gen X scene. Our Song of the Day, “Chipped Tooth,” is an existentialist viewpoint of examining all the rough edges of yourself - be it your ragged brain, running wild with thoughts that slip into darkness quicker than you'd like, or the jagged points of a chipped tooth - always existing but not always noticeable until it's the only part of you that you can think about. “I think it's more our mutual appreciation of music that grabs you and grabs hold and shakes you to the core,” explained Weiss to KEXP's Eva Walker during their in-studio recorded in July. “I think we feel like this band has that potential to kind of get inside a person a give them strength and hope and just a joie de vive. Things get really hard and I feel like music is our saving grace so we all kind of look to music to lift us up.” Watch said in-studio and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
