In this panel discussion, 4 current international students will be sharing their experience of how they success and thrive in their life in the US.

This is the second episode of our discussion on technology and international education. Today we are continuing introducing the trending technology in student affairs and international education. We will discuss how to stand out at the age of technology and how to start getting familiar with educational technology for our jobs in higher education.

We are talking about how technology influence our work at higher education and student affairs, particularly in international education. We will have two episodes talking about this topic. We will also talk about what we can do to stand out as student affairs professionals at the age of technology.

In this throwback episode, we are featuring the 2021-2022 Webinar Series for Around the Globe sponsored by ACPA CGDSD and IASAS. Following the social outcries for greater equity and systemic societal change around the globe, people often focus on their own communities, current trends and/or related issues. Spanning half the globe (3 distinct regions), our virtual panel will explore decolonization and how inequity presents for indigenous groups in present spaces. Exploring similar issues from different contexts around the world – this session frames the issues within a local context allowing opportunities for growth and expanding perspectives. Panelists will examine cultural and historical factors, current barriers, and needed responses to social justice for indigenous persons looking to the future. Dr. Kay-Anne Darlington is an assistant professor of Communication at the University of Rio Grande, where she was recently selected as the winner of the 2020-2021 Edwin A. Jones Excellence in Teaching Award. She received her Bachelor's degree in Media and Communication from the Caribbean School of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica; her MA in International Studies and her Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Ohio University where she also completed the Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) graduate certificate. Prior to graduate school, she worked throughout the Caribbean on social development projects that addressed HIV workplace policy implementation, teenage pregnancy, parenting, and early childhood development. In this episode, Dr. Darlington is going to share tips to financial wellness and career planning as international students.

In this episode, we welcome Dr. BAS, our faculty in residence elect, and Stacye Thompson to share about their study in internationalization at the community college level through a social justice lens. Stacye is a 25 year veteran of international education and is currently the Coordinator of International Student Services at Jefferson State Community College while working on her doctorate in educational studies for diverse population at University of Alabama Birmingham. Dr.BAS is the Assistant Professor of Higher Education at University of Alabama Birmingham and a proud product of a community college. Stacye works closely her faculty, Dr.BAS in exploring and researching about the topic where they are share their findings and perspectives into internationalization with us in this episode.

Jian “Ken” Guan passionately enjoys promoting the success of international students in American higher education to prospective students and their families. He is currently the Co-Chair of NASPA International Education Knowledge Community. Born and raised in China, he has worked and studied in eight campuses and geographic environments since 1998. He started from being an English language student in the United Kingdom to earning his doctorate in higher education at Indiana University Bloomington in the United States in 2017. He has served in various leadership roles related to internationalizing student affairs in professional organizations, such as the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and American College Personnel Association. He has been featured on multiple U.S. campuses as a speaker on assessing and enhancing the services and support for international students for all students' success. In 2018, Ken was recognized by ACPA as the award recipient for Service to the International Community. Additionally, he is an opera singer with professional training. Ken is grateful for his educational journey in the United States. He has met great mentors and friends, who guided and championed him along the way.

It's not everyday that we can get three SA pros from Hong Kong to talk about their journey in the U.S. so we took this opportunity to do so. Bianca Chau, Co-Host of Global Connections talked to Vicky Lee and Jeffrey Tsang about how they got to the U.S., leveraged their international student experience and passion to serve in the capacity they are in. Jeffrey Tsang is currently serving as an academic advisor in the College of Engineering at Michigan State University. He will be starting a PhD program in higher, adult and lifelong education at Michigan State University this fall with research interest in STEM education, educational technology ethics, and student success. Vicky Lee is the Student Engagement Coordinator and International Student Advisor in the Office for International Students & Scholars at Michigan State University. As a former international student, Vicky is extremely passionate about creating a more welcoming environment for a diverse student and scholar population, and fostering stronger family-school-community relationships especially in the higher education setting. In her free time, she loves to travel to new destinations, read fiction books, and explore different cooking recipes. It was a pleasure being able to interview Yuezhong as she shared about her role as the commission chair for CGDSD as she ended her tenure in March 2021. Yuezhong currently works at the International Student and Scholars Center at the Arizona State University. Gudrun is a clinical assistant professor and program coordinator of the Higher Education and Student Affairs program at Northern Illinois University.
