Higher Calling Wildlife is the inspirational voice of wildlife conservation. This program digs deep into the issues affecting most treasured natural resources.
The most dangerous thing in the woods isn't rattlesnakes, bears or wild boars. It's people. Increasingly outdoors lovers are coming into contact with criminal elements and even human predators everywhere from suburban green spaces to our national forests. We shouldn't enter these areas afraid but we should be aware of potential threats and how to avoid them. When parking in remote areas, always park with the vehicle facing the direction you would need to retreat. If 80s slasher moves taught us anything it's that trying to back up and leave a dangerous scene, can end badly. Carry a remote transponder that can send a distress signal to rescue units if you get a hurt or need help. Be cautious of strangers approaching YOU for help. If the situation is unclear, offer to go back and call emergency officials. And finally, go with your gut. If you feel uneasy about a location, don't go there. There are plenty of other options out there. The outdoors is a place of peace and tranquility but sometimes the outdoors experience goes dark. Keep these tips in mind and always be aware of your surroundings.
