Every four years, the presidential election brings with it a perennial question about an essential voting bloc: Who will Black voters turn out for? Mother Jones video correspondent Garrison Hayes has spent months on the campaign trail talking to Black voters about how they see the goals and limits of their own political power. He paid special attention to Black Republicans and a new crop of Black supporters of former President Donald Trump. This week on Reveal, we hear from voters at the Republican National Convention, a graduate from a historically Black university whose star is rising on the right after appearing in a viral video hugging Trump at a Chick-fil-A, and a Republican organizing other Black voters to turn out for Vice President Kamala Harris.

This episode covers the radical history of the Twin Cities, which evolved in a unique and dynamic historical conjuncture in the long 1960s as a site in which African American, American Indian and Mexican American communities were concentrated in an otherwise overwhelmingly white state. The emergence of Black Power, the American Indian Movement, and the Chicano Movement parallel and overlapping in a shared urban site speaks to the socio-political context of injustice. These dynamic movements built infrastructure to confront these shared forms of repression, but through their particular communities: The Way organization in the Black community, Centro Cultural Chicano in the Mexican community, and in several independent schools in the American Indian community. These institutions—also evident in the emergence of the Black Patrol, the AIM Patrol and the Brown Berets in addressing police violence—emerged independently but with points of convergence and direct interaction. Jamie Curry and Jimmy Patiño would also like to add the names and dates regarding the women in AIM: in May - July 28, 1968, the American Indian Movement is founded and conceived in Stillwater State Prison by Eddie Benton-Benai Jr., Dennis Banks, and Clyde Bellecourt; Alberta Strongwoman, Elkwind Dalmond, Caroline Dickinson, Fanny Fairbanks, Laura Waterman Wittstock and Elaine J. Salinas called the first meeting on the Northside. Not once did Clyde or Dennis take action or strategize without input from the women in the movement and are still the backbone today). Calling themselves (in '68) Concerned Indian Americans (CIA), they start patrols in Minneapolis because of the school's mistreatment of their sons and daughters, lack of decent housing, to combat weekly police brutality and racism inflicted upon and experienced by Indian people in the Twin Cities. https://www.instagram.com/soulforcemn/ Watch the video edition on The Red Nation Podcast YouTube channel The Red Nation Podcast is sustained by comrades and supporters like you. Stop accepting random pills from strangers on the internet who only desire to make money off of your cultural malaise. We explore a brief history of how the west has settled on the premise that we are primarily sexual creatures, and the implications this has brought for young people today. In modern culture, we view ourselves primarily through the lense of how desirable we are to other people, and this premise is simply untrue and unhealthy.

Welcome back, folks! This week on the show, my friend Martin Ferretti joins me to analyze psychoanalyst, Carl Jung's legendary self-therapy journals: The Red and Black Books. Both released after his death, The Red Book represents a sizable portion of the Black Books' contents. Large, leather-bound, and full of beautifully haunting paintings and calligraphy of his innermost spiritual turmoil, Jung's Red Book is truly something like a magical tome written by a modern man of science. The Black Books were the rough journals he kept of nearly twenty years of therapeutic investigation into his dreams, meditations, and trance states. Like a mythological hero speaking to gods and goddesses, angels, even some demons and ghosts, Jung would work himself into an active trance and communicate with his hypnotic archetypes in order to discover epic journeys, tribulations, lessons, and triumphs that actively played roles in his daily life. The story today is almost something like a hard-nosed, disciplined man of science allowing himself to go on one of the truest NeverEnding Stories of all time. And not only do we discuss Jung's journey of this nature, we also bring up the likes of JRR Tolkien, Dante Alighieri, Wolfgang Goethe, and Manly P Hall, showing how the investigations of our imaginal constructs through art and magick are sometimes the only way to highlight and grab hold of some of our innermost undiscovered drives, instincts, aspirations, and downfalls. Without our dreams, our art, and plans and projects, we would implode under the weight of our un-mined potential. Truly, this is the physics of the situation -- ignore it and see what happens. People like Jung and Tolkien didn't shoulder the weight of an existential crisis because they thought it might be fun, they did so because they found themselves at a place in their lives where it had become unavoidable. So, rather than avoid it at all costs, they strapped up and dove headfirst into the abyss so that they might tame it! As Jung himself once wrote, borrowing from Goethe, “This is the fund of unconscious images which fatally confuse the mental patient. But it is also the matrix of a mythopoeic imagination which has vanished from our rational age. Though such imagination is present everywhere, it is both tabooed and dreaded... It is considered the path of error, of equivocation and misunderstanding. I am reminded of Goethe's words; ‘Now let me dare to open wide the gate/ Past which men's steps have ever flinching trod.' …Unpopular, ambiguous, and dangerous, it is a voyage of discovery to the other pole of the world.” Come with me if us want to dive. Hello everyone. We're back. Well... to be more precise, I am back. This is the new version of PDSMiOS. One guest with me (Joel) talking about a sci-fi movie we decided on together. An Important WARNING for those with young ones or those sensitive to cursing, I AM NO LONGER BLEEPING OUT THE CURSE WORDS. This decision is based on feedback from a few listeners. I imagine most people won't notice, but for those of you who do, reach out to me on Twitter or at PleaseDontPodcast@gmail.com. We can probably figure something out. Anyway, enough house keeping. My guest on this episode is someone I can now call an old friends of mine. He has been my recording partner on Shoot the Piano Player, We Cut Heads, and High and Low. He has been part of the perfect trio that performs on The Arbitrary Indiscriminate Movie Podcast. He is the one called Spencer Seams and he has picked an amazing movie called Burst City from 1982! It is difficult to describe Burst City in terms of subgenre. Let me just say it is part Repo Man, part Fury Road, part A Hard Day's Night, and the rest is some of the most interesting stuff put on film. I hope you enjoy the discussion we had. I have 4 more episodes ready for me to edit, so keep an eye on your podcast feeds. It's going to be wild. Check out Spencer's writing on Jailhouse 701: Japanese Cult Cinema and Red Black and Green: A Celebration of African History
As the summer heat turns on, conversation about global warming inevitably picks up as well. Black environmental advocates have seen the increased public conversation, and foundation spending, on environmental advocacy and are demanding their cut. Global warming is having a disproportionate impact on Black communities. Some advocates are demanding A "Red, Black, and Green" New Deal (RBGND) to address environmental racism and fund Black advocacy around environmentalism. The advocacy is being branded as a Pan African, race concious adendum to the Green New Deal. However, an investigation of the advocacy reveals the limits of foundation-driven advocacy and the need for genuine study of Pan-Africanism to develop autonomous political institutions which provide better solutions for our movement and our climate.
