Strange Sightings in the Blue Mountains: Podcast OverviewThis podcast offers a fascinating exploration of numerous unusual phenomena reported in the Blue Mountains and the surrounding areas. Listeners are introduced to a wide array of subjects, each contributing to the region's mysterious reputation.Topics Discussed· Yowie Sightings: Accounts of encounters with the legendary creature known as the Yowie are examined, highlighting the enduring intrigue surrounding this cryptid.· Big Cats: The podcast delves into reports of large, unidentified feline predators roaming the landscape, fueling ongoing debates about their existence.· Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger): Sightings of animals resembling the supposedly extinct Thylacine are discussed, raising questions about the possibility of its survival in remote environments.· Orbs and More: Additional unexplained phenomena, such as mysterious orbs, are also covered, adding further layers to the region's enigmatic character.Theories and PerspectivesThe podcast presents multiple viewpoints regarding these anomalies. Some individuals suggest that all these strange occurrences are interconnected, potentially indicating a common cause or link among the phenomena. Conversely, others propose that the answer lies in the Blue Mountains' harsh and mostly unexplored terrain. According to this perspective, the landscape's inhospitable nature allows for the survival of rare or unknown creatures, which are seldom seen due to the area's inaccessibility.

A plan to revive the extinct Moa has sparked debate - and excitement - among experts. US company Colossal Bioscience has partnered with Ngai Tahu in a $50 million project to revive the flightless bird through gene editing and surrogate hatching. Thylacine Integrated Genomic Restoration Research Laboratory head Andrew Pask says bringing the moa back could help fix many of the environmental issues impacting New Zealand. "It's one of those species that we've lost due to humans coming into an environment - but these species were so critically important in maintaining the ecosystems which they came from." Thank you for your podcast. I discovered Celtic music in the 1990s in France with a french band that has since disappeared, Tonynara. I could be wrong but I don't think I've ever heard it on your podcast. This group remains a reference for me and I can only advise you to play one or two songs at the next opportunity. Thanks !” Caleb Cotter sent a photo: "Hi Marc, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for featuring the Irish Lassies' music this year. You've introduced me to so many incredible artists, and I truly appreciate that! I've also been really enjoying your Dancing with Hobbits album—it's fantastic! You definitely nailed it with that project, and you should be incredibly proud of it. You've always encouraged us to send over recommendations, so I wanted to share one with you: My friend's band, The Mad Ferret from Edinburgh, UK. They're amazing, and I think you'd really enjoy their music. Here's one of my favorite tracks that I think you'll love. Also, the Lassies would like to send you something in the mail as a thank you. Could you please share an address where we can send it? Wishing you a wonderful New Year and thank you again for everything you do for the Celtic music community!” Patrick Rieger emailed photos: "Hi Marc, Some more celtic musicians from the family's renaissance festival season, this time the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival. Pittsburgh is a small faire, but the musicians are still great. We could only spend one day there, so we didn't see them all. We did get to see The Reelin' Rogues, The Craic Show, Sarah the Harpist (Sarah Marie Mullen), and just as we were leaving at the end of the day, Magnus and Maggie. Despite the musicians and us seeing each other one or two times a year, we still get to be friends. Big smiles. Daniel from the Craic Show wanting to clink glasses at the Pirates Pub. Sarah and my wife Gayle got into a conversation about environmental issues.”

It's an all new year of Sasquatchery... and as the team kicks off 2025, we dive into the famous story of the "Minnesota Iceman" and the claims involving a frozen relict hominoid, and then shift out attention over to recent news involving a Texas-based company's efforts to try and revive ancient extinct species that include the Woolley Mammoth, the dodo, and the enigmatic Thylacine. Then following our news segment, the team is joined by Tim Halloran, who is the author of the book, The Bigfoot Influencers: Compelling and Candid Conversations with Researchers, Scientists, and Investigators, and co-host of the complementary Bigfoot Influencers Podcast with his wife, Dana. He describes the book as a first of its kind guide for readers that takes them through compelling and entertaining conversations with prominent individuals who have impacted and influenced the Bigfoot Phenomenon. For the first time, in one place, readers can explore the diverse history of the subject. Matt is joined by Professor Andrew Pask who is the head of Tigrr Lab, which stands for the Thylacine Integrated Genetic Restoration Research Lab and what they are working towards with the de-extinction of the Thylacine or commonly known as the Tasmanian Tiger or Tassie Tiger. They discuss an array of topics on the subject that include; The race for the first animal to be brought back out of the Woolly Mammoth, Dodo and Thylacine; The genetic manipulation that could save the Northern Quoll and render the Cane Toads venom inert to it; Should we bring back animals that have gone extinct; The process of releasing the Thylacine back into the wild when we have animals to do so; The absence of an apex predator such as the Thylacine on the landscape and the impact to the ecosystem; The Yellowstone wolves and their re introduction impact; How animals may have a genetic imprint in their memory of predators; The timeframe for when we will have an animal; The process and why the fat-tailed dunnart is a key component; and plenty more. We discuss the basics of the Australian Outback. How big is Australia compared to the US? Where did dingoes come from and how long is the Dingo fence? What ground dwelling parrot lives in the outback and are they insomniacs? What are Brumbies? What is a Thylacine and do they still exist? Where did kangaroos come from? What is the topography of Australia?
How can we learn to be with the grief that arises within as we witness the destruction being wrought upon the Earth? When we are broken open by the pain of loss, how can we hold and work with the seeds of despair, but also love, that flood into that space? This week, we revisit “Thylacine,” a short story by American novelist and Pulitzer Prize finalist Lydia Millet that imagines the twilight of the last remaining Tasmanian tiger, a creature caught in the crosshairs of Australia's violent colonization. As a man mourns the death of his mother, he seeks the company of the tiger housed in a failing zoo. Turning to face the loss that begins to swell through the zoo like a plague, he summons the courage to care for what remains amid an overwhelming sorrow for what will inevitably disappear. So there is so, so much good in this episode. First, we discuss the Beast of Gevaudan, a crazy cryptid/ wolf that terrorized the countryside in Gevaudan, an area where the French believed the dark enchantments of the forest still held sway. The beast seemed to terrorize the French countryside in the area known as Gevaudan, striking from out of nowhere and disappearing just as quickly. Many tried to catch the beast, and many claimed they had but the attacks only stopped after a local man shot a large wolf on the slopes of a nearby mountain. We discuss what kind of animaal the beast might have been, look into the history surrounding the beast and even give our own thoughts on what we think it might have been in this fantastically wolfy episode of the Family Plot Podcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to cover two animals that a lot of people have suggested. Carson and Mia both want to learn about the Tasmanian tiger, and Eli and Pranav both want to hear about the Tasmanian devil. We talked about the Tasmanian tiger, AKA the thylacine, in episode 1, and I thought we'd had a Tasmanian devil episode too but it turns out I was thinking of a March 2019 Patreon bonus episode. So it's definitely time to learn about both! The thylacine was a nocturnal marsupial native to New Guinea, mainland Australia, and the Australian island of Tasmania, and the last known individual died in captivity in 1936. But thylacine sightings have continued ever since it was declared extinct. It was a shy, nervous animal that didn't do well in captivity, so if the animal survives in remote areas of Tasmania, it's obviously keeping a low profile. The thylacine was yellowish-brown with black stripes on the back half of its body and down its tail. It was the size of a big dog, some two feet high at the shoulder, or 61 cm, and over six feet long if you included the long tail, or 1.8 meters. It had a doglike head with rounded ears and could open its long jaws extremely wide. Some accounts say that it would sometimes hop instead of run when it needed to move faster, but this seems to be a myth. It was also a quiet animal, rarely making noise except while hunting, when it would give frequent double yips. A 2017 study discovered that the thylacine population split into two around 25,000 years ago, with the two groups living in eastern and western Australia. Around 4,000 years ago, climate change caused more and longer droughts in eastern Australia and the thylacine population there went extinct. By 3,000 years ago, all the mainland thylacines had gone extinct, leaving just the Tasmanian population. The Tasmanian thylacines underwent a population crash around the same time that the mainland Australia populations went extinct—but the Tasmanian population had recovered and was actually increasing when Europeans showed up and started shooting them. Because the thylacine went extinct so recently and scientists have access to preserved specimens less than a hundred years old, and since the thylacine's former habitat is still in place, it's a good candidate for de-extinction. As a result, it's been the subject of many genetic studies recently, to learn as much about it as possible. It'll probably be quite a while before we have the technology to successfully clone a thylacine, but in the meantime people in Australia keep claiming to see thylacines in the wild. Maybe they really aren't extinct. The Tasmanian devil is related to the thylacine. It's about the size of a small to average dog, maybe a bulldog, which it resembles in some ways. It's compact and muscular with a broad head, relatively short snout, and a big mouth with prominent lower fangs. It's not related to canids at all, of course, and if you just glanced at a Tasmanian devil, your first thought wouldn't be “dog” or “thylacine,” it would probably be “giant mouse.” The Tasmanian devil is black or grayish-brown, usually with patches of white on the chest and rump. It also has rounded pinkish ears, long whiskers, paws with relatively long toes, and a long tail. Since the devil stores fat in its tail, a fat-tailed devil is a happy, healthy devil.

My guest for this episode is Gary Opit. Gary is an Australian zoologist, cryptozoologist, and author. He also hosts a wildlife talkback radio show on ABC North Coast NSW Local Radio and between 1997 and 2015 conducted a citizen science project, collecting data based on the phone calls and emails he received during that time from people seeking assistance identifying wildlife they had encountered. Often these would be turn out to be examples of rare known and existing species of animal, but a significant amount were not and indicated the survival of animals previously thought long extinct on the Australian mainland, such as the Thylacine and Marsupial Lion, as well as completely unknown species, including ape and hominid like creatures, commonly referred to in Australia as the ”Yowie”. Gary has had an incredibly varied career, working as a State Park Ranger, as well as at a number of schools and universities, teaching subjects such as Anthropology, Ecology, Zoology and Botany. His knowledge of the wildlife of Australia is extensive as is that of the history of cryptid sightings in the country. As you might imagine, our conversation in this episode is a wide ranging one. I talk with Gary about how his interest in Australian cryptids started, the fossil record of wildlife in Australia and the range of habitats that could potentially allow the survival of some of those species into the modern day. Gary talks about some of his own experiences as well as encounters that other people have had with an impressive array of unusual creatures. Further details on Gary and his research are available on his Facebook page 'Australian Cryptozoology Gary Opit', which can be found at https://www.facebook.com/doolagarl/ and a Kindle version of his book 'Australian Cryptozoology' can be purchased via Amazon here. The Tasmanian tiger, also known as the Tasmanian wolf, was a carnivorous marsupial that roamed the Australian mainland and the islands of Tasmania and New Guinea islands. However, before Europeans arrived, it became extinct in New Guinea and mainland Australia around 3,600-3,200 years ago. It is believed that the introduction of the dingo may have contributed to its extinction, though dingoes never reached Tasmania. Before European settlement, an estimated 5,000 Tasmanian tigers remained in the wild in Tasmania. But by the nineteenth century, they were seen as a threat to farmers' livestock, and bounty hunting was introduced. Sadly, the last known Tasmanian tiger died in 1936 at Hobart Zoo in Tasmania. However, reports still circulate of this striped creature's sightings and discussions of bringing it back through cloning its DNA.Regardless, it is time to take a walkabout Within the Mists of Tasmania with Gary and GoldieAnn and learn about Thylacine.#thylacine #cryptid #cryptozoology Hosted on Acast. Wildlife biologist Forrest Galante rejoins us to discuss rediscovering "lost" species and why we should resurrect the dodo, thylacine, and woolly mammoth. What We Discuss with Forrest Galante: What's Forrest been up to since his last visit to this show? Just milking venomous sea snakes and trying to find out why orcas are slaughtering great white sharks en masse. Where are the world's biggest snakes found, and do they ever eat people? What did Forrest find inside the world's largest cave — besides a variety of isolated ecosystems with their own weather systems? Why following leads for unknown or thought-to-be-extinct species isn't tinfoil hat territory — and the clever ways Forrest and his team track them. How likely is it that science will be used to resurrect extinct species like the woolly mammoth, dodo bird, and thylacine in the near future — and how does this ambitious goal fit into the conservation of existing ecosystems? And much more... As rapid warming, pollution, habitat destruction, and insidious violence against other species speeds up the rate of extinction and edges ecosystems ever-closer to collapse, what voids are left in the tapestry of the living world? In this short story, novelist Lydia Millet imagines the plight of the last remaining Tasmanian tiger—a creature caught in the crosshairs of Australia's settler narrative, eventually hunted to the point of extinction. As a man seeks the company of the tiger, housed in a failing zoo, he summons the courage to care for what remains amid an overwhelming sorrow for what has been lost. Read this story on our website. The Thylacine or Tasmanian tiger lived in Australia for thousands of years, but went extinct in 1936. Or so they thought. Jimmy Akin and Dom Bettinelli explore the reports that there are still thylacines in the wild as well as efforts to bring them back through DNA technology.
