In 1832, things in Texas were chaotic to say the least. There was conflict between centralists and federalists on two fronts. The Texas settlers wanted their freedoms and opposed the chaos that was the Mexican government. Within the Mexican government, there was conflict between Mexico City and the state governments. Trouble was brewing. In Anahuac, Col. Juan Davis Bradburn added fuel to the fire by jailing first and asking questions later. He jailed a State Commissioner, then he arrested William B. Travis. Disturbances ensued…and revolution was near. Hear about the Anahuac Disturbances in this episode of Wise About Texas.

What to know about purchasing a used RV. Learn about cruise ship life, or eyeing alligator boots—how about a hunting adventure plus TSA ID rules. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News!   Season 5, Episode 241 What to Know Before Hitting the Road in a 20-Year-Old Class C Motorhome  Buying a used motorhome can be the start of a grand adventure—or a roadside disaster. Here's what to inspect and prepare before taking off. Inspect the Core Systems Engine & Transmission: Hire a mechanic to inspect the drivetrain. Leaks, odd noises, or sluggish shifting can spell big trouble. Roof & Seals: Check for soft spots or water damage. Even a pinhole can turn into a pricey repair. Electrical & Plumbing: Test every outlet, light, and water system. A short or leak on the road is no fun. Don't Skip These Pre-Trip Checks Replace tires older than 5-7 years, regardless of tread. Flush and sanitize the freshwater system. Test brakes and lights, including turn signals and trailer hookups. Stock your toolkit: duct tape, fuses, jumper cables, sealant, and extra fluids. Lastly the biggest step before leaving on a long trip, try out the RV or camper close to home on a couple of small trips. This is so important in order to fully understand how all of the equipment works, handles on the road to even parking or leveling. Too often we are overly excited and just want "TO GO"... But that's when disaster or unwanted extra stresses or costs can come into play. So try out that "New To You" RV or Camper and hit the road! Go here to apply for a job with Holland America, https://www.hollandamerica.com/en/us/about/our-company/careers No, Your Costco Card Won't Get You on a Plane We love Costco as much as the next person — the free samples, the gas prices, the 48-pack of muffins — it's all great. But there's one thing your Costco card can't do... and that's get you on a plane. Yep, the TSA has officially shut down the rumor that your warehouse club membership counts as a REAL ID. Despite the shiny star on the card or even a photo on your app, it's not a valid ID for flying. Period. The TSA put it perfectly: “We love hot dogs and rotisserie chickens too… but please stop telling people your Costco card is a REAL ID. It absolutely is not.” Since May 7, you now need a REAL ID, passport, or other federally approved photo ID to fly domestically. Show up with your shopping card? You might miss your flight — and no one wants that. So, pack smart, fly smart… and save the Costco card for the snack aisle, not the security line. Reference: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification Boots, Bayous, and Big Gators: A Wild Texas Adventure Wanna walk a mile in your own boots? In Texas, that now includes hunting the leather yourself. Houston-based Republic Boot Company is offering a $5,000 package that comes with a guided East Texas gator hunt — and a pair of custom cowboy boots made from your very own alligator. That price tag also covers your hunting guide, firearms, tags from Texas Parks and Wildlife, and even a head mount of your gator. But you'll need a group of four or more to book the trip — and a little patience. The custom boots take about eight months to make, since tanning gator hide doesn't happen overnight. The hunts are going down this fall near Anahuac — also known as the Alligator Capital of Texas — during the short but wild gator season, September 11th through the 30th. Owner Chris Conrad says while most people associate gator hunting with the “big, gnarly” beasts seen on TV, those larger alligators typically have bigger and rougher scales that aren't ideal for leather working. Eight-foot gators are just right — tough enough for the hunt, but perfect for premium leather. So if you're ready for the full Texas experience — boots, bayou, and big reptiles — this one's for you. The Hidden History of Texas

The Hidden History of Texas

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 4, 2023 12:05

We're still in 1835 and I'm taking a closer look at each of the early battles skirmishes that took place as the year comes to a close and today it's the Battle of Goliad. In my last episode I discussed what happened in Gonzales, Texas, almost simultaneously trouble was brewing in Goliad. That battle was not limited to one settlement, it encompassed several of the towns in and around the area and it is where we first meet General Cos of the Mexican Army. What could possibly be so important about a settlement, that quite frankly most people have never heard of, that it deserves special mention? Before 1829, Goliad was called La Bahía, and it occupied a place on the main route from the Gulf of Mexico to San Antonio de Béxar. About the same times as San Antonio was established the Mexicans also established Copano (El Cópano), on Aransas Bay and it served as the principal port of entry into Texas. These three points, San Antonio, La Bahia (Goliad), and Copano were the key to control of South Texas. La Bahía had incredible strategic importance since it guarded the supply line from the coast to the principal city of San Antonio. The roots of the Goliad Campaign of 1835 lay in Santa Anna's emergence in 1834 as president of Mexico and leader of the movement to establish the authority of a supreme central government. This clashed with the increasingly independent thinking in Texas arising in part from its distance from the central government in Mexico City and from its proximity to the United States. Santa Anna was determined to suppress any movements that were in favor of maintaining federalism and opposing his presidency. Santa Ana ordered his brother-in-law, General Cos, to Texas in September to investigate the refusal of citizens at Anahuac to pay duties to the central government, I've talked about the Anahuac Disturbances in episode 20 and it's on the website, so I won't go into detail here. Cos's goal was to proceed to San Antonio and ultimately San Felipe de Austin via Goliad with an army of 500 men. Their purpose was to reinforce Col. Domingo de Ugartechea and chastise the citizens of Texas for their attitude. This plan was well known in Texas, for many citizens had family in the interior and business connections there. The influential John J. Linn of Guadalupe Victoria warned as early as July 1835 that Cos would land at Copano. In July at La Bahía presidio, Col. Nicolás Condelle (or Conde), who had been sent to secure Goliad and Copano for Cos's projected expedition, arrested the alcalde, stripped the town of its arms, pressed citizens into service, and quartered soldiers in their homes. These activities caused several clashes to take place and increased the tension. General Cos landed at Copano about September 20. James Power, empresario of the Power and Hewetson colony and Cos's friend, sought out the general, who cordially informed the empresario of his orders to "repress with strong arm all those who, forgetting their duties to the nation which has adopted them as her children, are pushing forward with a desire to live at their own option without subjection to the laws." Power then warned the inland colonies that Cos had arrived and had marched to reinforce the government garrisons at Refugio, Goliad, and San Antonio, and would ultimately arrive at San Felipe de Austin. Cos left Refugio on October 1 and entered Goliad the next day with an honor guard of thirty, followed, as rapidly as it could be landed, by the infantry battalion which numbered more than 400. Cos dispatched Capt. Manuel Sabriego, a commander of local rancheros, and about twenty-five men to Guadalupe Victoria to seize a cannon and arrest José M. J. Carbajal, though, like the incident at Gonzales, the attempt was unsuccessful. Alcalde Plácido Benavides led the militia of Victoria against surrendering either the cannon or Carbajal. Cos departed from Goliad on October 5 with his honor guard and a  battalion and marched unmolest...

This week in La Voz en Breve with Mariel Fiori is education and family week. I spoke with Laura Garcia about the December 17 Nuestro Futuro Conference, organized between the Newburgh Library and Orange County Community College, for Immigrants and Undocumented Families about the cultural misconceptions regarding college education. Sandra Salguero invited us to the end of the year celebration of the Latinos in Businesses that Succeed Together. Free, but please bring an unwrapped toy for the Rural Migrant Ministry on Friday, December 16 from 6-10pm at Brotherwood's in Washingtonville, NY. Register at eventbrite (eventbrite.com/e/latinos-in-business-annual-holiday-mixer-at-the-brotherhood-tickets-467996188197?) In addition, in her column La cultura cura, the teacher of the ancestral cultures of the Anahuac, Anita Campion, told us how to celebrate the Birth of Huitzilopochtli. Anita suggested we do a morning exercise every day until December 21 (the winter solstice) to develop willpower and decision-making power. The exercise consists of writing a list of blessings in a notebook, and writing down why we are grateful for each blessing. Read the list every day and at the end of each item say thank you. Write down five blessings each day, preferably different ones. This gratitude will help us to be happier and will develop our willpower.

4-22-22 – Rachel Lipman, Loew Vineyards – 150 years and 5 Generations of Mead Making

4-26-22 Tonight on Gotmead Live, we're talking with Rachel Lipman, owner of Loew Vineyards, in Mt. Airy, Maryland, one of the oldest vineyards in Maryland. The mead production in the Loew family dates back to the mid-1800's in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with a few prominent meaderies and distribution all over Europe. Rachel is one of the youngest winemakers in Maryland (if not the youngest), and she's pushing the boundaries in a male-dominated industry. Rachel is the granddaughter of Wolfgang Loew, and he adopted the name William when he came to the US after World War II, having been the only member of the family to survive the Holocaust, and he did so by being in the Underground. William ended up in Maryland after some time in Indianapolis, and when he arrived, he felt compelled to start making wine at home, remembering his childhood and the smell of the barrels in his family's meadery. He practices and tweaked, and became very well versed in creating a palatable bottle of wine. He kept this up, and when he retired from his 'day job', Bill found a great 37 acre piece of land in Frederick County and planted grapevines. At the time there were only a handful of grape growers and wineries in Maryland. Now the torch has passed to the next generations, and Rachel, the eldest granddaughter, has taken over. Rachel grew up learning about the family history and the winery, and immersed herself in the industry, getting a Bachelor's of Science in Plant Science and a Bachelor's of Arts in Communication. She also studied in France, interned at an organic vineyard in the Loire Valley. She also completed the Washington State University Enology Program. Rachel now manages most aspects of the operations for the vineyard, winery and tasting room. Including winemaking. Rachel makes her families' mead. They have a dry, semi-dry and semi-sweet mead, and make a cyser and a pyment (which has multiple vintages). She spent quite a bit of time uncovering her families mead-making past. While things were shut down during Covid, she dug through Polish documents, magazines and newspapers to learn more about the family business. She learned that her families' meadery was in a district that had warehouses, vodka distilleries, several other meaderies, and a beer garden. Her families' meadery took up an entire city block! At the time in the 1800's when the Loew family were meadmaking, they distributed internationally. And of the ten kids that they had, two of them started meaderies of their own. The rest got into winemaking. One son established the first national meadery and beeswax facility in Poland. He and his wife had three sons, one of which was Wolfgang, Rachel's grandfather. Rachel is now carrying one the family winemaking, and has updated the winery with all new equipment, and is looking to a future of providing her family's wine and mead to the customers of the future. Join us as we talk with Rachel and explore the rich mead (and wine) history she is part of. This player will show the most recent show, and when we're live, will play the live feed. It started years ago, when my 2 & 5 yr old grands asked for a story. I prayed, God answered, and from then on, every visit, I heard, "It's storytime Memaw." until I told them one.Later, I prayed, "God, give me stories of You. They need You in their lives, help them draw closer to You." This went on for 8 yrs, then both accepted Jesus as Savior.3 months later, Mar. 2020, during prayer, God spoke. I clearly heard Him say, "Have them published." Immediately I said yes.I had never done social media and never used a computer. During the stay-at-home mandate, I bought a computer and God saw me through. I had never spoken to a crowd before, but I have no problem bragging on God and sharing what He's done in my life. Not only has He labeled me an author by giving me a book, but He's also called me to be a storyteller, by giving me a podcast to tell old and new stories He continues to give me. It's all of Him." @KurlyTlapoyawa@Tlakatekatlwww.chimalli.orgIn this episode, we cast a critical eye on the organization known as the Movimiento Confederado de la Cultura de Anahuac, or MCRCA, and its founder Rodolfo Nieva Lopez. Now, if you have never heard of Nieva Lopez or the MCRCA before today, you are probably not alone. However, if you are actively involved in Mesoamerican cultural reclamation, Nahuatl language revitalization, Danza Azteca, or Curanderismo, odds are some aspect of what you are practicing has been directly influenced by Lopez and the MCRCA. Founded in the late 1940's by Rodolfo Nieva Lopez, the MCRCA sought to glorify Mexico's indigenous past but relied almost exclusively on pseudohistorical misrepresentations of Mesoamerican history and culture. The MCRCA adopted the concept of Mexicayotl as the defining characteristic of their movement and released a book in 1969 titled Mexikayotl, which outlined their overall philosophy. In Spanish, the MCRCA began to refer to their version of Mexicayotl as “La Mexicanidad.”Much like Afrocentric pseudo scholars who shamelessly over exaggerate African contributions to the world, the MCRCA had a strong tendency to falsify and embellish the cultural achievements of Pre-Kuauhtemok civilizations. For this episode, my co-host and good friend Dr. Ruben Arellano Tlakatekatl will take us on a guided tour of Nieva Lopez's life, and I will provide a brief examination of his book “Mexikayotl.” So strap yourselves in, and prepare yourself for: Rise of the Mexikayotl!Kurly Tlapoyawa is an archaeologist, ethnohistorian, and filmmaker.
