We are extremely honored to have Mr. M. R. James, founder of Bowhunter Magazine, share some memories of his close friend, Fred Bear. Fred Bear was one of the greatest bowhunters in modern times. But beyond his hunting accomplishments, Papa Bear did as much to promote modern bowhunting as anyone. This week M. R. and Alan Altizer discuss the impact of Fred on their early bowhunting careers as his films fueled their bowhunting passions. After meeting their hero, they share their time spent with Fred and the realization that he was still just another passionate bowhunter, a good man, and friend. M. R. shares some little-known facts of contributions Fred made to ensure bowhunting's future. M. R. James and Fred Bear, what more could you ask for? We all owe a huge debt to these two men who have devoted their lives to making the future of bowhunting better for us all. God bless them. Learn more about your ad choices. This week Derek and Eric chat with Ryan Shutts, the Product Manager behind Bear Archery's compound and youth bow lines. Ryan shares insights on Bear's deep-rooted tradition in archery and how they're keeping Fred Bear's blue-collar, accessible ethos alive in a world where prices keep going up. We chat about the resurgence of traditional archery, the smooth draw of single-cam bows like the Adapt 2, and why balance is something to strive for in a bow in contrast to shaving pounds. Ryan also shares tips for getting your kids into archery and the importance of finding the right bow to match your hunting style. He also answers a bunch of listener questions! For the past nine years, Scot and his family have been running the shop, offering a wide range of bows, arrows, broadheads, and outdoor gear. The shop's all about making sure customers feel welcome and have plenty of space to browse without feeling cramped. The conversation is full of laughs as Scot and the hosts dive into what it's like running an archery business, the latest trends in gear, and some of the quirks of the industry. Scot's especially proud of the fact that they've shipped custom arrow builds to all 50 states, proving just how far their reputation has spread. They also touch on the importance of supporting local businesses and give a nod to Fred Bear, one of the original legends of archery and a true pioneer in outdoor content creation. https://www.feathersandantlersoutdoors.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Next to Fred Bear, there may not be another name in bowhunting more iconic than Chuck Adams. With an record-setting 226 Pope and Young animals to his credit and a 40-plus year hunting career that has spanned the globe, Chuck is a living legend who remains as passionate about archery today as he was five decades ago.
Scroll through Instagram or head on over to YouTube, and you won't have to try too hard to find a video of an arrow arcing through the air for ¾ of a second before it enters an elk, whitetail, or hell, even a spring turkey. It would be hard to back up the claim that long-range archery shots are more common now than back in the Fred Bear days, but they certainly are more visible. This is both a blessing and a curse. Episode: Fred Bear's Fourth Commandment of Bowhunting Release Date: June 11, 2023 -On the Trail … Man that was a big move… and are you done with your draws? -(3:23) Question of the week from Gene I use Thunderhead Broadheads which uses replaceable blades. Can those be sharpened as well? If so, how? I have been reluctant to shoot birds with a bow because of potential broadhead & arrow destruction. As opposed to big game, on level ground you're usually shooting downward with the arrow traveling at high speed after it passes through the bird and into the ground. Any solution to this issue? -(11:01) Exercise of the week – Stretching/Yoga I know it's hard to get into stretching, but it's supprisingly good for you, so… you should probably be doing it, and I probably should too. -(15:55) Commandment #3 – Fred Bear's 4th law of Bowhunting The Best camouflage pattern is called, “Sit down and be quiet!” Your grandpa hunted deer in a red plaid coat. Think about that for a second. In this segment we look into how deer see and what you need to do to beat their eyes. They're better than you might think. This week Gene Hopkins and Russell Lantier join us for an episode of Back Trails to talk about the pioneers of modern bowhunting. By the late 1800's, bowhunting was almost completely a thing of the past. There were a few men that kept the flame alive and were able to pass along the knowledge that was almost forgotten. Along the way pioneers like Will and Maurice Thompson, Ishsi, Will Compton, F.S. Barnes, Art Young, Saxton Pope, Glenn St.Charles, and Fred Bear led by example and paved the way for those of us that have come to love the simple art of traditional bowhunting.
Uncle Ted recalls meeting legendary deer hunter Fred Bear. It's the 35th anniversary of the release of his song, “Fred Bear” which was inspired by the passing of the man who changed the world of archery. Episode: Fred Bear's Third Commandment of Bowhunting Release Date: May 28, 2023 -On the Trail … The Not so Basic Basics of Bowhunting was a blast, check it out on Youtube, and the deadline for the draw is coming up in 3 states out west… -(4:20) Question of the week from Kade What licensing/permits/classes do I need to get started? We dive into all the things you're going to need to get out there for your first hunt. We all know about hunter ed classes, but some states require more and some tags have different requirements, so we go through how to figure out what exactly will be required to get out there. -(12:14) Exercise of the week – RUCKING!!! If there's one thing that signals the start of summer training for hunting it's RUCKNIG, and it's time to get to kicking your own butt so you are ready for the fall. -(18:30) Commandment #3 – Always approach downwind. In the cool of the day move uphill; in the heat of the day move downhill. One thing that can't be talked about enough when discussing big game hunting is the wind. It's vital to OBEY, defined as comply with the command, direction, or request of; submit to the authority of, the wind. And this law brings up not only the predominant wind direction but leads us into a discussion of thermal wind, storm wind and how water affects wind movement in the woods. This is one option. How to do it: https://exrx.net/WeightExercises/BackGeneral/DBBentOverRow https://www.strengthlog.com/dumbbell-row/ -(13:40) Commandment #2 – Don't look for deer, look for movement. And remember that's what they're looking for too. As almost everything in hunting goes, you need to slow down. This law is no exception, when you move too much you lose opportunities, but you do need to get to the right place, what's the balance and remember to look for movement. 2 days left to sign up for the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife webinar – The Not So Basic Basics Of Bowhunting here: https://www.register-ed.com/events/view/198396 Episode 9: Military Base Hunting: https://open.spotify.com/episode/47ZFBAETdDAHvO0Qjwj3YK?si=42dcfecc2e564ecb Episode 1: Public Land Hunting Opportunities: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1g9Lncp8x7mRjmd4WpwEHn?si=66a974bba1224910

Broadcasting from the Sold By Eldon Studio, the fellas chatted about Rich and Phil's family trips coming up for Spring Break. And CT hates Spirit Airlines with a passion. They put a call to their pal Eldon and Phil recommends to Eldon that he should head to a nude beach while they are in St. Martin. That was awkward LOL. Other topics include: Golfing with Jack Nicklaus, Rich using Fred Bear's (the famous hunter) bathroom, there are some super crazy psycho's in Genesee County that have been arrested by Genesee County Sheriff Swanson. And a ton of other stuff that I forgot to write down. Have FUN on your trips fellas! Love, CT & Rich … and Phil!!!

This weeks Back Trails episode is chocked full of adventure and connections to history! Rick Snell grew up in Illinois, but spent over half of his life in Alaska. While there, Rick squeezed in a lot of bowhunting and along the way became the first bowhunter to take all of the big game species in Alaska including many grizzly bears, and he used recurves of his own making. Over the years, Rick also made lots of connections to some of the pioneers of modern bowhunting. Our friend Mike Mitten got us in touch with Rick to talk about all the bowhunting he'd done in the last frontier. But along the way we learned about his connections with Mel Johnson, Fred Bear, Glenn St.Charles, Jay Massey, Ed Bilderback and the Valiant Maid, just to name a few! This was a really fun episode to record and we thought it was only fitting to release this one as a Back Trails! Hope you enjoy it!
