Tell them that they are not alone and that there are many people in the same situation. Acknowledge that it takes strength to trust someone enough to talk to them about experiencing abuse. Give time to talk, but don’t push them to go into too much detail. Acknowledge that it is a frightening and very difficult situation. Tell them that no one deserves to be threatened or beaten, despite what the abuser has told them. Nothing can justify the abuser’s behaviour. Allow them to make their own decisions. If so, offer to go with them to a hospital or to see her GP. Help to report the assault to the police if they choose to do so. Be ready to provide information on organisations that offer help to abused women and their children. Explore the available options with them. Tell them about Women’s Aid and how to access our website. Try to plan safe strategies for leaving an abusive relationship. Create boundaries of what is safe and what is not safe; don’t urge to follow any strategies that they express doubt about. Offer your friend the use of your address and/or telephone number to leave information and messages, and tell them you will look after an emergency bag, if they want this. Look after yourself while you are supporting someone through such a difficult and emotional time. Ensure that you do not put yourself into a dangerous situation; for example, do not offer to talk to the abuser about your friend or let yourself be seen by the abuser as a threat to their relationship. In 1994, 12 years after the last time Mary had been seen alive, her disappearance was finally reported to the police. Nothing happened in this case until November 2003, when a routine traffic stop in Arizona uncovered something nobody had ever expected to find. This episode looks into the police interviews conducted with Mary’s parents and explores what happened when police made that shocking discovery in Phoenix, Arizona. *******************************************************************************Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Infraction, we value your support more than you know! On January 26th 2011, Ellen Greenberg was found dead in her apartment kitchen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her death was ruled a suicide, but was quickly changed to a homicide, however shortly after this, her manner of death was once again changed back to suicide. This was despite the fact that her autopsy revealed that she had sustained a total of 20 stab wounds to her neck, back, head and abdomen. This episode explores the journey this case took and unbelievable evidence that really does appear to refute the idea that Ellen’s death could have been anything but a murder.*******************************************************************************Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Infraction, we value your support more than you know! On the 19th of March 1985, Linda Brown was shot dead in her home in Orange County, California. The suspect? Her 14 year old step-daughter, Cinnamon Brown. Throughout her questioning and her subsequent trial, Cinnamon continuously stated that she had blacked out and couldn’t remember what had happened on that chilling night. Years later, the truth would come out. This episode explores the unbelievable turn of events that led to the murder of Linda Brown. We discuss marriages that were kept a secret, a baby that was kept hidden, $2 million in life insurance policies and a depraved man who groomed and manipulated young girls his entire life, as we take a look at the case that inspired two books and a TV series. ************************************************************Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Infraction, we value your support more than you know! On the 29th of August 2015, 20 year old Bear Diaz disappeared from his home in El Cajon, California. His TV, money from his safe and his lifesaving medication were also missing, but his glasses, that he couldn’t see without, were still in his bedroom. At first glance this looked like the case of a run away. However, due to an issue with his feet as a result of a chronic illness, Bear couldn’t physically have run away, because Bear couldn’t walk. This episode discusses Bear’s life before his disappearance and the efforts his family went to after he went missing to try and find him. We then take the facts and discuss our theories on what we think could have happened to Bear. ***********************************************************************************Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Infraction, we value your support more than you know! In December 1988, Yvonne Sleightholme, a quiet and shy doctor’s receptionist from Scarborough, was arrested and charged for the brutal execution-style murder of Jayne Smith. Shortly after her arrest and before her case had even gone to trial, Yvonne went completely blind as a result of a mental disorder that was known at the time as ‘hysterical blindness’. This episode examines the evidence that was used to convict Yvonne for this violent murder and asks the question... was she wrongfully convicted? ************************************************************************************* Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Infraction, we value your support more than you know! On November 16th 1989, Julie Hogg, a young mother, went missing without a trace. The police were quick to tell her family that she had probably just run away. Months later, Julie’s body was found in an area the police said they’d searched. Her murderer was arrested and charged, but shockingly was acquitted of the murder in court. Despite him telling everyone he could that he had killed Julie, an archaic law called Double Jeopardy meant that he couldn’t be tried again for this violent crime. This episode explores this law and discusses how Ann Ming, Julie’s mother, fought tooth and nail to create a landmine ruling in British legal history. ******************************************************************************* Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Infraction, we value your support more than you know! On July 9th 1996, Lin Russell was walking her two daughters, Megan and Josie, home from a swimming gala in the quiet village of Chillenden in Kent. In broad daylight at 4pm, all three of them were tied to a tree, blindfolded and then viciously attacked with a hammer. Their attacker then walked away and left them for dead. This episode explores the attack that has been dubbed “The Chillenden Murders” and discusses the theory that the wrong man may have been convicted of this violent crime. *****************************************************************Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Infraction, we value your support more than you know! Evelyn Hernandez was 24 years old and 9 months pregnant when she, and her 5 year old son Alexis, went missing from the Crocker-Amazon neighbourhood of San Francisco. Several months later, her torso washed up on the banks beneath the Bay Bridge. Her son Alexis and her unborn son Fernando have never been found. This episode explores the murder of Evelyn and the suspected murder of her two sons, whilst also looking at a very similar case that got much more media attention. We discuss the concept of ‘Missing White Woman Syndrome’ in relation to the lack of media attention in Evelyn’s case and discuss what the motive might have been to kill her. ***************************************************************Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Infraction, we value your support more than you know!
