The Slanted Attic Experience: Episode 60 "Abby & Caitria" Blueprints, Banter & Bringing Back Your ChildhoodTyler sits down with two Richmond based architects and things get out of hand in the best way possible. Abby and Caitria bring sharp perspectives, genuinely great stories, and the kind of conversational chemistry that makes an episode impossible to stop listening to.They open with construction costs before somehow landing on meat processing, an octopus learning to play the piano, and the critical question of how many third graders you could realistically take in a fight. The Antonio Brown story gets its moment, the Joe Rogan platforming debate sparks real discussion, podcast recommendations are handed out freely, and Flophouse Comedy Club makes a well deserved appearance before public restroom horror stories take over completely. From there it is a full dive into childhood. Middle school memories, Caitria's rowing journey and the Bay Bridge swim, exercise induced anaphylaxis, Walktober at the office, tribalism and Sapiens, the pre versus post internet divide, teachers buying their own classroom supplies, Polly Pockets, Barbies, public speaking fears, and what American culture looks like when you never leave your hometown. The recording ends before the outro gets a chance to happen, which honestly tracks.Guest Panel:Abby: A 27 year old North Carolina native and proud UVA architecture grad who has called Richmond home for five years. When she is not walking her dog through the Fan or tending her vegetable garden, she is deeply invested in historic preservation, sustainable design, and the architectural character that makes Richmond worth caring about.Caitria: An Arlington native and fellow UVA architecture grad who spent two years in New York before landing in Richmond. When she is not designing buildings she is rollerblading, drawing, catching a comedy show, hanging at the river, or playing pickleball. Refreshingly honest and genuinely funny, Caitria brings an energy to the conversation that is hard to manufacture.Topics Covered:Intro The real costs in construction Meat and animal processing and food in general An octopus learning to play the piano How many third graders could you take in a fight? The Story of Antonio Brown The Joe Rogan Experience and the platforming debate Podcast recommendations: Exploration Live, Brooke and Connor, Caleb Hearon's So True Flophouse Comedy Club Public restroom horror stories and public infrastructure The hypothetical of going back to elementary school Middle school stories Caitria's rowing journey and the Bay Bridge swim Exercise induced anaphylaxis Walktober at the office Tribalism and hunter gatherer instincts from Sapiens Pre versus post internet and instant information Teachers purchasing their own supplies Kids being oblivious: the stories Polly Pockets and Barbies Continuing the childhood theme and memorable events Public speaking American culture and living in the same town your entire life No outro this timeNew episodes of The Slanted Attic Experience drop bi-weekly at 10:30 AM EST, with the occasional surprise episode along the way. Bob Ortblad warns the Interstate Bridge Replacement's planned S-curve approach will be more dangerous than San Francisco's Bay Bridge detour that killed multiple drivers. The engineer argues the 1,100-foot radius curve combined with icy conditions and steep grades creates a recipe for disaster, calling speeds over 40 mph "engineered manslaughter." He advocates for an immersed tunnel alternative that would eliminate safety risks while providing earthquake protection and weather shielding for Vancouver commuters. https://www.clarkcountytoday.com/opinion/letter-interstate-bridge-replacement-design-is-engineered-manslaughter/ #IBR #InterstateBridge #BridgeSafety #Transportation #Vancouver #ClarkCounty #Engineering #TunnelAlternative #PublicSafety #WashingtonState

March 16, 1990. San Francisco County, California. 17-year old Toni Clark, who happens to be two months pregnant, leaves her cousin's residence in Oakland to drive back to her apartment in San Bruno in her boyfriend's Chevrolet Camaro. Shortly thereafter, the stalled Camaro is discovered on the Bay Bridge and after another motorist crashes into it, investigators conclude that Toni was likely propelled off the bridge into San Francisco Bay. However, Toni's body is never recovered and there are a number of odd discrepancies, such as reported sightings of a black male next to the Camaro shortly before the accident and a bizarre anonymous phone call to Toni's mother, which cause speculation that Toni was abducted. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will explore whether Toni Clark was actually the victim of a tragic accident or if something much more sinister happened. In addition, we'll also discuss the unsolved disappearances of 28-year old Diego Garcia, 41-year old Carmen Burhans Garcia and eight-year old Barbara Burhans, who all vanished after leaving their home in Los Angeles in March 1982 before their abandoned car was discovered 250 miles away at the bottom of a gorge in the San Gabriel Mountains. In Part 2, we pick up where we left off in Part 1. To get us caught up to what Lisa is doing these days, we go back to her arrival in The Bay. Her work at the prop shop led to some other jobs, but competition was fierce and she sought a way to integrate art into the labor she undertook. She found it when the production of James and the Giant Peach hired her to do puppet fabrication. The work took place in a warehouse in South of Market and it wasn't quite as glamorous as people think. In fact, it was grueling, but rewarding. Her boss on that job was a woman named Kat. That was 30 years ago, and the two are good friends today. In fact, Kat is shooting a documentary about Lisa's incredible life called Made of Iron. More on that below. Lisa wanted to stick with animation, but was never able to get an art director job. She considered moving to LA, but shut that down pretty quickly. And so she decided to learn a trade—something her dad did back in the day. She went to a job fair and asked what the hardest trade represented there that day was. Lisa's trade became ironwork. Her introduction to the folks who did ironwork was a little rough. She was required to visit job sites and get an ironworker to sponsor her. It took her six months to get hired. She met a guy named Danny Prince who helped her get work in The City making precasts (think parking garages). She'd work during the week and go to classes for ironworking on Saturdays. Ironwork has, quite possibly since its inception, been very much a “man's” world. Lisa ran head-first into bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination from the get-go. But a combination of her own drive and the advice of a few mentors helped her get through it. There might have even been some “Go fuck yourself”s along the way, too. That said, the highs were high and the lows were low. “I never cried on the job,” Lisa told me. But the tears would come once she was home in the evenings. Still, she persevered, and things got better and better for her. One of her early favorite jobs was on the then-new California Academy of Sciences. Besides it just being a really cool building, Lisa got to do many different jobs all around the place. She says it was incredible watching it all come together. Another job highlight was Lisa's work on the arena that came to be known as Chase Center (and for Valkyries fans, “Ballhalla”). Photos of Lisa helping build Chase can be seen in the gallery to the left here. Another was Marin General Hospital. And then there was the Golden Gate Bridge. After Chase Center and another, lesser job (and a divorce), Lisa got offered a job working on the Suicide Deterrent Net on my favorite bridge. But it wasn't just any job. She would be foreperson. She didn't think she could do it because she didn't know bridge work (despite working a little on the new Bay Bridge). After being told it was foreperson or nothing, she decided to take the job. Of course the crew she would oversee comprised all bridge-work veterans. Her approach was to be respectful of that. And her crew respected her back for it. The job entails taking out old pieces and beefing up the infrastructure of the bridge, which was finished back in 1933. Lisa talks at some length about a societal need for us all to have more respect for labor. I'm with her 100 percent. There's a lot that we take for granted every day, all over the place. Many people worked and still do work hard as hell so that we can have shit like roads and sidewalks, transit tunnels, housing, and so much more. We should recognize and respect that work. We end the episode with Lisa's thoughts about life, her work, and what she loves about San Francisco and the Bay Area. You can donate to help fund Kat's documentary at the Made of Iron website. And follow that adventure on Instagram @madeofirondocumentary.

In 1989, the Golden Gate Bridge was blockaded for the first time by a group of protesters going by the name Stop AIDS Now…or Else! They were sick of their friends dying in a government-facilitated genocide of queer people (the medical industrial complex and corporate media were complicit, too). It wasn't till 2016 that another group of protesters (black.seed) blockaded the Bay Bridge, this time propelled by the Ferguson uprisings and the crisis of Black people dying, especially at the hands of police. And then in 2023 and 2024 the Bay Bridge 78 and Golden Gate 26 blockaded for Gaza; some still face charges. Alfredo Sainz's grandfather came to US from Chihuahua, Mexico, in the Bracero Program during World War II. That family then migrated from El Paso, Texas, through New Mexico and Southern California, then as far north as San Francisco. In this episode, get to know Fredo and his 415 Zine co-founder and co-publisher, Laine Wiesemann. We begin Part 1 with Fredo. Fredo and his brother were his family's first US-born members, making them both Chicanos. Most of his mom's family immigrated to the US, but many family members on his dad's side still live in Mexico, mostly in Guadalajara. His grandfather followed the work, which lead him to San Francisco in 1946. He worked in construction, eventually bringing his wife and children, including Fredo's mom, to live with him. Fredo's family settled in Excelsior near Crocker-Amazon Park. He attended Sacred Heart. After high school, he moved to Daly City and then the Sunset, where he lives today. Many of his high school classmates are still in SF. He's never lived anywhere else, though his family did spend summers in Mexico, something Fredo remembers fondly. His grandfather still had a ranch there where they would stay. They'd set out right when the school year ended, and return right before the fall semester began, with a side trip to K-Mart for school clothes, of course. I ask Fredo if he's ever been tempted to live somewhere else. He expounds on an emphatic “No!” Then he talks about a BBQ spot out near the ocean close to Doggie Diner where he was introduced to peach cobbler. Next, we turn to Laine and her story. She's from the Central Valley—Sanger, California, near Fresno. The family later moved north to Linden, near Stockton. Both her parents were train engineers. Her mom was one of the first women engineers, in fact. Laine visited San Francisco a lot during her high school years. She remembers crossing the Bay Bridge and being awed. She has memories of her dad taking her and a friend to Amoeba Records. She'd been doing art since she was little, but really started getting into it when she was in high school. In her freshman year, she did commissions. After graduation, she moved to Chico, where she says she “learned how to party.” A friend of hers had moved to The City and her boss was coming here, so, with those things in mind, Laine decided it was time. She moved to San Francisco in 2008. That boss ended up not moving here after all, so Laine had to find work upon her arrival here. She was able to do that relatively easily. Though she'd worked at Trader Joe's in Chico doing her store's art, by the time she got to San Francisco, she took a break from art. She worked for a caterer doing special events. And it was at that job that Alfredo and Laine met. I ask them what year that connection was made, and the fact that they both struggled to remember says a lot. Deep friendships can do that. They ballpark it as 2009 or 2010, before the Giants won their first World Series in SF. A small subset of their coworkers were artists, and they all formed a tight social circle. Fredo and others urged Laine to get back to painting. And, inspired by her and others in the group, he decided to pick something up also. He channeled the graffiti he'd done when he was younger. Soon enough, that work crew had a group art show and they asked Fredo to be part of it. That show led to another with the same artists. They had their own art, of course, but the four also contributed to a single collaborate piece. Me, Laine, and Fredo struggle to remember the name of the game with plastic monkeys that Laine compared the piece to. “Barrel of Monkeys,” Fredo eventually recalls. Yep. It was 2016 and with those shows behind him, Fredo decided to run with “above-ground” art. He says that, especially in those days, Laine helped him out a lot with the technical side of creating art. Fredo also credits her with being good at the business side of being an artist—promotion and sales and such. Since she started doing art again, Laine hasn't stopped. She shares how that got going again. She was visiting her girlfriend's relatives in Tamales, where many members of that family paint. Laine was inspired. But when it came to subject matter, she felt she had two options—the surrounding natural beauty (specifically, a nearby creek), or a shiny red teapot. She settled on a mashup of sorts—the teapot pouring into the creek. She had a lot of fun with that little painting. And so, she picked that up and ran with it. Check back next week for Part 2 with Laine and Fredo. We recorded this episode at Madrone Art Bar in April 2025. Photography by Mason J.
When the ospreys return, it is a sure sign that spring has sprung. Another sign is the return of the Bay Bridge Boat Show and the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show. While not as large as their older siblings in the fall, these two shows are a great way to make sure you are ready to get on the water this summer! The crews are moving full steam ahead to prepare for this year's Bay Bridge Boat Show which moved slightly east to Safe Harbor Narrows Point Marina in Grasonville. More boats, more parking, more vendors and an entirely different experience awaits attendees. The gates open at 10am on Friday, April 1, 2025 and the show continues through Sunday April 13th. And then two weeks later, they do it all again in Annapolis for the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show from April 25th through 27th. And like the Bay Bridge Boat Show, the Annapolis show will have plenty of boats, vendors, food, and fun for everyone! The other day, we hopped over to Forward Brewing in Eastport to catch up with Mary Ewenson, one of the show's owners, to see what was new and exciting. Construction on both sides of the Bay has necessitated a pivot—one for location and the other for how they arrange the floating city! We chatted about the training opportunities, the vendors, the boats (there will be an 80-foot beauty in Annapolis, along with some foiling sailboats for those who like to zoom), and the experience, which has been going strong for over fifty years! What excites me the most is the camaraderie of the boating community and the opportunity to learn from the experts. Both shows feature some version of "drive before you buy," in case you are not sure-- at the Bay Bridge Boat Show, there is the Prop Talk Demo Dock, and at the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show, there is the Learn to Sail Workshop. No matter how involved (or not) you are with boating, there is something for everyone! You can get your tickets to the show in advance (Bay Bridge Boat Show - Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show), but for now, have a listen!

Josh Mankiewicz and Blayne Alexander sit down to talk about Josh's episode "Under the Bay Bridge." When tech mogul Bob Lee was stabbed to death in San Francisco, it seemed to be another example of big-city crime. Investigators quickly learned the crime was far more personal, but would their theory of what actually took place put Bob Lee's accused killer behind bars? Blayne and Josh discuss what they think the security video of Lee's last moments really shows and what it means to "code hard, play hard."
