This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Tennessee to discuss the tragic case of Channon Christian and Chris Newsom, a lovely young couple from Knoxville that were kidnapped, tortured, sexually assaulted, and murdered. Four males and one female were arrested, charged, and convicted in the case. According to the Associated Press, some bloggers and media critics claimed that the national media ignored the murders because the victims were white while all five suspects were black. Most news reports came from local media and online news sites. Police Chief Sterling Owen IV said that there was no indication that the crimes were racially motivated. He said, "We have no evidence to support the notion that this was a race-based crime. We see this as a cold-blooded murder." However, some commentators disagreed, claiming that such a crime represented motives of racial hatred. January 7th, 2007, a train engineer driving by the train tracks in East Knoxville, TN, found the still smoldering human remains of 23 year old Christopher Newsom. The young man had met a horrific and brutal end. Two days later, Knoxville PD would receive a tip that a group of criminals are hiding out in a rundown house on Chipman Street, just blocks away from where Newsom's body was discovered. In that house, in a tall trash can in the corner of a filthy kitchen, Chris Newsom's 21 year old girlfriend, Channon Christian's body was discovered. The couple had met the most grizzly end I have ever encountered as a true crime researcher. If you know anything about this case, you know that it is one of the most horrific out there. That said, Trigger Warning! Please listen with caution. However, what sticks more so than the heinous details of what these two wonderful young adults endured, is the love that their families have for them. On the night of January 6, 2007, couple, Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom were saying goodbye to one another as they left a friend's apartment when they were approached by a few individuals planning to steal Channon's vehicle. The carjacking then turned fatal when Christopher was tortured, raped, and shot, his body then left to burn near the railroad tracks. Channon was kept in the home of the ringleader, LeMaricus, where she was brutally raped and tortured, bleach poured down her throat and on her body to dispose of evidence, and then ultimately wrapped in trash bags and stuffed into a trash can with a broken neck, left to slowly suffocate. This is yet another murder case, unique in its utter barbarity. The couple in Knoxville never saw it coming- neither did their family and the entire town.
